Hello, Fares. I began learning to swim this August (2023) at 64 years old and only 5'6" tall. Thanks to your videos, I have gone from 14:25 for 400m breaststroke on 20 Sep to 10:37 on 06 Dec, and my average pace today was 1:55/100m. This would not have been possible if not for your great training videos. Thank you so much for posting these excellent tutorials.
Thanks for the kind words and keep up the great work! If you'd like to send us some photos of you swimming to support@myswimpro.com we'd love to feature you as well :)
I think this is the best breaststroke video I've seen - thank you ! I started lap swimming about 4 years ago in my late 50's - 1:45 / 100 yd breaststroke is a good time for me right now - usually about 7 or 8 strokes after the pullout. Your slow motion replays and annotations are really nice.
for 25 meters, I do 12 - 13 kicks. I have been swimming for about 68 years now, and my freestyle is pretty good, but years ago my instructor said I was not coordinated enough for the breast stroke. LOL, so she taught me the side stroke. Well, nobody swims the side stroke any more, so in Masters swimming I started to work on my breast stroke and I can do it now, it's not very good, so thanks for the instruction. I have more to work on now.
I am just learning to swim at 42. Your videos are REALLY helping me to visualise what my instructor is saying. I cannot for the life of me get the pull, kick, glide thing though. I think this video helped, thank you!
I am going to the pool right now to try this, I been kicking and pulling at the same time for 52 years! I have been stuck at the same time for a long time now, I want to do ten lenghts in under 5 minutes (6.5 minutes atm). I can't tell you how excited I am!
Hi Fares👋I just discovered yesterday that I can pull, kick and glide….I did 6 strokes on 25 meters, I couldn’t believe it !!!😱 this was thanks to all your great tips to swim better and more efficient. Thank u! ❤️💯🙏
As a kid I was trained by the Australian Olympic coach Greg Hodge. He taught the kids the following with arms: scrape a bowl, almost taste it with your hands and then push it away and spit it out.
Clear analysis - with nice start and stop on the video - so that the viewer can really digest and remember what you are talking about. I like that you point out your own imperfections - relatable - though you are clearly very strong and do a lot of things quite well! Again - terrific use of video - and you give the viewer time to absorb what you are talking about. Thank you.
OMG - I can't wait to try this. Have been swimming for a couple of years now after a few lessons and I generally accomplish the 25 m length in 14 strokes! I'm pretty sure I was taught to lower my knees for the kick as I initiate the pull. At 68 and osteoporotic, I can't do the flip at the end of the lane and had pretty much accepted that 14 strokes was going to be the best I could do. Hmmmm...maybe not!
Nice analysis. When I was in college (late 70's) we were not allowed to dip our heads fully underwater so we puffed up our caps to try to prevent DQs. We essentially did the "long glide" drills in practice dipping our heads fully under and we could sense the currently accepted fact that the gliding streamline was the fast part of the stroke. Since the rules required a tip of the cap above water, we often had an upward "rake" to our body positions in meets. It hurt our speed and mostly our endurance as the extra drag was very evident by the end of a 200 BR, (especially LC). Now in practice I do 4-5 strokes/25 yd (after pull out) and can feel the smooth advantage of the long glide. When I race (rarely in Masters), I typically revert to old form in the 50/100 but maybe I would get better with more training/better discipline or better training/more discipline. I do not do the 200 anymore as it causes nausea, vomiting, ridicule, and psychological trauma.
Great video and analysis! I use swimming breaststroke as my daily cardio for the past 12 years. 1KM in a 25M pool, no rest and finish in 25 minutes; used to be 23 minutes a few years back but aging doesn't help (turning 60 this year). The first 3 to 4 pool length I can finish each at 11 strokes but it gradually goes up as fatigue kicks in gradually. For the last pool length its usually 14 but won't get any higher than that. Though I'm not a competitive swimmer but I still want to improve as having a goal is much more fun than just swimming aimlessly. I will definitely try your technics to try to reduce the number of strokes per length. Thanks!
With little kids, I have them swim breaststroke with a pool noodle under their arm pits. this helps them to keep their arms forward. Also with little kids, I have them do the 2 kicks, 1 pull drill. I set the challenge up for them to make it to the other end of the pool (25y) with 10 or less kicks. The winner gets an ice cream token or swim cap. Great info!
Hey Fares and thanks for another excellent tuition video. At 73yrs I'm just getting back into swimming - used to swim for my local club as a young man.. Problem I have with the kick is because of all those years taught to kick at the same time as the arm recovery.. I find it hard to wait till the arms are out front. But with your video I can now imagine having a cord from each hand to my heels. So when the arms begin the forward recovery, the heels would be drawn towards the butt. It'll take time to get out of the old ways but I'll certainly persevere.
"...how many strokes I make after the pullout." I think somebody's going to have to put you on the Graham Norton show and have them read some of your lines out of context.
I really liked this breakdown. I just had Masters Provincials this weekend and swam :41 for the 50 and 1:32 for the 100 (SCM). Luckily I had a video of my 50 and can really see where I can improve, especially in head position. I am from the old-school "can't put your head under the water" days from the 70's, so it is a hard thing to unlearn. Oh, 8-9 strokes for 25m after pullout. I'd love to go sub-1:20 with some technique refinement.
25 mtrs = 10 strokes, for me. You're my hero. I love the breast stroke. Question: should I be squeezing my butt as I'm gliding or am I developinga bad habit? I wonder if it's a good workout for the glutes?
Hey Fares! Thanks for the video, very insightful. Atm I'm training in a 20-meter pool and I'm doing 4-7 pulls depending on the speed and the fatigue level. And since I can do 50 in like 35 seconds, the difference in my pull (in-)efficiency versus yours is obvious. Think my main issue is the leg kick, as I'm totally inflexible and cannot maintain a narrow sharp kick. Also I have been training since last June though, so got ways to improve :)
You mentioned that swimming breaststroke should be fast. My question is, if I'm swimming for general fitness or health benefit and not for competing (i.e. would prefer swimming longer distances than short but more intense) what would your advice be? Noting that I'm also fairly new to swimming so my fitness is pretty poor at this stage, I just managed to be able to swim 300m with breaststroke without taking a long break (25m pool), I still take like a 2-3 second break at the end of every lap.
Thanks a lot. So clear. I'm already 47 years old, many years swimming just breastroke and taking lessons but stuck in 02:00/100 (fastest 100 in 01:40, but normal series at 02:00). How many km a week aprox do you think is reasonable for improving in about a year? I'm swimming about 12 km a week average... may 20 kms would be more reasonable to see an improvement? Will appreciate a lot your opinion. Kind regards.
appreciate the informational videos man. A year ago I was struggling to hit 1:25 in 100y breast, but now I’m trying to hit a goal time of 1:10 this weekend.
I do on average about 13, if I go faster then more strokes if i go slower then less. Although a 30 second 50 long course really impresses me. I’m pleased if I manage a 100 in under 2 minutes.
I did my competitive swimming 60 years ago. I was pretty good in breaststroke then, but current breaststroke would be disqualified when I swam. I’m trying to learn the new technique and had a question about head position. Are you allowed to have your head below the surface of the water? Your video shows this, but again, that would have resulted in a DQ when I swam?
I'm always trying to work on my breaststroke because I have just never been much good at it. When I try a 50m sprint it takes 42s in a race, and in training at least a few seconds slower. One thing I noticed is the timing of your kick. You are already dropping back down into the water and almost in streamline before your knees even start to bend to begin the kick's recovery. You probably do this without even having to think about it, but when would you suggest to start the bending of the knees (based on what's happening at the front of the stroke)? I think I bend my knees too early and I'm ready to start the kicking action when I am near the top of the pull. Also, you bend your legs a lot compared to most modern breaststrokers. Just an observation that I thought might be costing you a bit of time, due to possible extra resistance, and an increase in time to perform the kick, maybe with limited benefit.
I'm 76. Typical breaststroke old fashion style from 1960s (no diving). 6.5-7 strokes for 25 m. Typical speed for non-stop 1km 60% power 20 minutes. Started to swim 6 months ago after 40 year break. A sudden problem is both hip pain (never had it before). Something probably wrong with my leg kick. Any advice.
Thank you for the video. I have a question regarding the pull-out. I learn the pull-out from your channel, but whatever I do (measured not in meters, but in seconds) is max 5 seconds duration of the whole process pull and the first moment the head is out of the water to check the clock on the wall in front. Counting the time on this video you do something like around 7-8 seconds pull-out process and then 5 strokes. I do 5-second pull + 8 strokes for a personal record of 25 seconds for a 25-meter pool, (normally I even do between 25-30, if I do 100m at once) compared with your results are not good. I'm afraid that I don't do the pull-out very well because if I push from the wall and start the strokes immediately, I have the same timing of 25 seconds for a 25-meter pool with maybe 10-12 strokes. I know that there are many other details to improve, like the kick and pull strength, but am very curious about the pull-out, and why the final results in seconds are the same if I pull out or I skip it. Definitely, I pull too back as you show is wrong, so will work on correcting this. Thank you in advance!
very nice technic to try. However as a beginner, I have question about the body position under the water, pardon me if they seems to be a stupid questions 😁 So when I kick and glide, should I keep my leg kind of loose and relax or bit of tight and pointy at the end? Also how do I keep my butt up and not keep sinking down with each kick? thanks in advance. 😃
I don’t mean any offense, but i think you doing something wrong with your head. That what at least my trainer’s are saying, because your neck shall never move when you swim breaststroke. It has to stay in streamline position all the time, but your chest has to move or else your legs fall down when you take a stroke. Your face should be right over the water. I can be wrong because I am only 14 i am 99% sure.😅 (Sorry for the bad English I am Norwagian, my record for 50 cr is 27,76 on 50m lane so I am not a beginner)
Wow Giraffman Your advice sounds pretty logical. Thank you much! What about the pull line of the arms? Not further than the nose? Anyhow that’s THE BEST BREASTSTROKE vid of my life!! 👍👍👍
Hi. Thanks for the insights. I do five strokes for 25m but I would be slower than 38" on 50 meters. If I want to be faster, I have to make more strokes and glide less. How to keep that 5 strokes yet be fast at the same time? Increase muscle strength? Thanks for your advice.
The thing I don't hear any videos on is how to develop such an effective kick. I'm basically doing all these things correctly but my kick doesn't propel me hardly anywhere. I don't know if it's ankle and knee flexibility work I need but I can barely break 40 secs for 50 yards sprinting in practice.
Might be helpful to see more of the stroke if you moved your overlay to the other side when the swimmer gets covered by it or turn it off. You could also video at a higher resolution giving you the option to scale and center the swimmer so they are not covered if you want to keep the overlay where it is.
I just started learning around 4 months ago. I still have difficulties with it. I do around 13 strokes on 25 meters pool. I think that is pretty bad and do not know how to improve it. In addition my back hurts, I feel pretty tired after on lap and I think that my pull, kick and glide is pretty disconnected. I also feel that I am sinking after the pull, so the kick feels lie 45 degree angle.
My pullout is barely 5meters. I then need 10 pulls for 25m in total. So....can we know your pullout distance please? That compares the meters per pull depending on the distance left. Mine is about 2m per pull/kick. I can't keep my breath well and after 500m I really struggle with the pullout as I feel out of breath and shoot up faster. Gasp. So then it becomes 11 pulls.
I do 5 strokes per 25 yards. I can go as low as 2 if I do a lot of not so pretty gliding. But my best time per 50 is only about 35 seconds without the dive.
Hi, love the channel. Could you tell me, when you get your streamline higher to the surface is there anything I need to think about to achieve this. I think I swim too deep.
nice video! I can do 5 strokes per 25m in full relax without considering the tempo... when I push up the frequency maybe something goes wrong, 43sec for a 50m.
Great video. I only do breaststroke, I'm kind of a beginner, and this was enlightening information. Do you have any videos on how to flip in the pool like when you approach the wall and you have to go back any techniques? Thanks
What would you say about a time of 1:19 on 100m m and 37.04 on 50m (a 25mpool) for a 12 year? He has problems in underwater and turns, so his time is almost the same in a 50m pool.
I have my student 11 years old 50 39, 100 1.24 , 200 2.56 .. As a coach I have noticed one thing.. Breast strikers are born , not made.. Don’t get confused with my statement.. I mean few kids have naturally flicking ( whipped) motion of kick and they excel in 100, 200 breast.. 50 breast is more of pull and tempo game..
@@ashishchaudhary2850 Totally agree that talent is very important for breaststroke. It's the one stroke where you can be bad at every other stroke, but hardly train and just turn up and be competitive in a breaststroke race because you are just good at it.
you are also looking up during your stroke you want to keep your head down and drive those hand forward and your head forward so you can get back to streamline
11-14 strokes (depending on how tired I am), but I have never done a full stroke and dolphin kick after push of the wall so I probably need less. I have a question about breathing, I have a tendency to hold the air and only exhale when I start pulling, is it normal? It looks like you are doing it as well, with me it often leads to running out of air as I am not able to exhale everything before I inhale so every few strokes I need to exhale as soon as I get into the water and I lose momentum. At the age of 40, I start development classes next Friday, yay :)
Excellent video! I am not practicing much breaststroke but I want. I checked it today and I am doing between 7 and 8 strokes, but I have plenty of mistakes that I need to correct, like my kick in the wall is not very efficient and I need to push stronger with my arms then the gliding could be extended and maybe I could be exactly on 7 strokes.
I am "really new" to swimming. Typical in that I can swim well enough to keep from drowning, but can't swim correctly, breathing, stroke, kick, etc. It appears to me that in the kick (breaststroke) the knees & quads would act as a dragging paddle, actually slowing one down. I understand the kicking motion would propel you forward but it seems like one cancels the other. Please help me understand.
Love your videos, really great. My problem is, that I am so flat in the water that sometimes my kick goes out of the water. I lose a lot of momentum in the glide phase. If i sprint in a 50m pool I can do max 1:56 for 100m. Usually I try to go for 1.5-2k straight on a 2:25 pace. But it feels I could do much better…
Could you please do a video on how to best swim breaststroke over a long distance, like the 3.8km of an Ironman Triathlon? What is the best energy saving/efficient, yet not too slow technique, stroke count, time of glide etc. Thanks.
Hi there! Swimming freestyle is actually the most efficient way to swim, and I'd recommend that over any other stroke in a long distance race. If you're looking to improve your breaststroke, check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/Elb2uTpW7qQ/v-deo.html
@@FaresKsebati Thanks. Hm, unfortunately I can‘t swim freestyle as I am not able to turn my head sideways that much in both directions due to an accident in the past which limits the rotation of my head. Therefore I can only do breaststroke, but I am training for an Ironman Triathlon in July this year. That is why I asked.
2:07 is my average, but i swimm only long distances. Usualy 2000 to 3000 meter 3 to 5 times a week, so 80 to 120 lanes. Stroke count is pretty high, around 12 to 15. I could do much less or swimm much faster on short distance, but so, it is a pretty good cardio 😅
I just started attempting the breast stroke. I need a lot more practice (and instruction) on my kick. When practicing the kick on my back, I hardly move at all and may even be going backwards! 😳

Really good video, I'm trying to do breaststroke like this now and not the pre 1986 style
Thank you foe this great tips for Master my breastroke and help swim with a excellency 🎉
very nice technic to try.
However as a beginner, I have question about the body position under the water, pardon me if they seems to be a stupid questions 😁
So when I kick and glide, should I keep my leg kind of loose and relax or bit of tight and pointy at the end?
Also how do I keep my butt up and not keep sinking down with each kick?
thanks in advance. 😃
Good video. It really helped to see slow motion and to occasionally pause for analysis.
Great video! Should explain how to finish the stroke properly and bring your arms back to the front for maximum efficiency
The video i have been waiting for 👍🏼👍🏼
I don’t mean any offense, but i think you doing something wrong with your head. That what at least my trainer’s are saying, because your neck shall never move when you swim breaststroke. It has to stay in streamline position all the time, but your chest has to move or else your legs fall down when you take a stroke. Your face should be right over the water. I can be wrong because I am only 14 i am 99% sure.😅 (Sorry for the bad English I am Norwagian, my record for 50 cr is 27,76 on 50m lane so I am not a beginner)
hey,, can give ALOT of tips for breaststroke? I rlly need it sir plss
Wow Giraffman Your advice sounds pretty logical. Thank you much! What about the pull line of the arms? Not further than the nose? Anyhow that’s THE BEST BREASTSTROKE vid of my life!! 👍👍👍
Guys he is a World Athelete
Hi. Thanks for the insights. I do five strokes for 25m but I would be slower than 38" on 50 meters. If I want to be faster, I have to make more strokes and glide less. How to keep that 5 strokes yet be fast at the same time? Increase muscle strength?
Thanks for your advice.
Very nice explanation
The thing I don't hear any videos on is how to develop such an effective kick. I'm basically doing all these things correctly but my kick doesn't propel me hardly anywhere. I don't know if it's ankle and knee flexibility work I need but I can barely break 40 secs for 50 yards sprinting in practice.
Hey Fares, I’m swimming at my club champs this evening. 100 free 50 fly and 100 breast. How should I pace the 100 breast?
Thanks
Izzi
how can i reduce my stroke count in a 25m, i have trouble with the strengh i have to put in
Geat analysis Fares , keep it up
Mr. Modesty here!
How many strokes is good for a 25 metre pool . Consider swimming for fitness ( not for sports )
thanks so much, i tend to kick to early slowing myself down…your video help to work on my kick timing ❤
why is it when i kick my legs go above the water line, unless i bring my knees closer to my stomach before kicking (which sends me nowhere.)
Question: How do you stay higher? I feel like I always drop deep after the breathing
Might be helpful to see more of the stroke if you moved your overlay to the other side when the swimmer gets covered by it or turn it off. You could also video at a higher resolution giving you the option to scale and center the swimmer so they are not covered if you want to keep the overlay where it is.
14-19 by 25 meters, for two years now. I hardly swim breaststroke.
Will I never be able to breaststroke again?
Thanks for the video.
This is the best breaststroke video. Thanks for sharing! Always love watching all your videos and learning the techniques.
Thanks for tuning in! Happy swimming :)
Hello, how tall are you?
I just started learning around 4 months ago. I still have difficulties with it. I do around 13 strokes on 25 meters pool. I think that is pretty bad and do not know how to improve it. In addition my back hurts, I feel pretty tired after on lap and I think that my pull, kick and glide is pretty disconnected. I also feel that I am sinking after the pull, so the kick feels lie 45 degree angle.
My PB is 1:25 long term goal is to get close to 1:15 as possible and short term goal is close to 1:20
My pullout is barely 5meters.
Great explanation thank you very much
I do 5 strokes per 25 yards. I can go as low as 2 if I do a lot of not so pretty gliding. But my best time per 50 is only about 35 seconds without the dive.
Hi, love the channel. Could you tell me, when you get your streamline higher to the surface is there anything I need to think about to achieve this. I think I swim too deep.
super helpful video. thank you
I am a special olympics swimmer and I am interested in competing in the 200 breaststroke, how can I improve breaststroke for a long distance event.
Try to spend as much on gliding as you can. That's the secret for 200m Breaststroke.
Thank you very much!
You do have a really good kick! Bribing my heels higher is something I’m trying to work on. Any other drills/strike mechanics you would suggest?
Thank you from Sao Paulo Brazil!! 👍
Wow the head comes up pretty good. Gonna have to change my game, along with all the other errors I do 😅
nice video! I can do 5 strokes per 25m in full relax without considering the tempo... when I push up the frequency maybe something goes wrong, 43sec for a 50m.
There's a balance between stroke count and speed for sure! Everyone has their own specific combination that makes them most efficient.
Any tips on how to float? Just started to learn how to swim, I can't float on back/front legs just sink right away.
Hi there! Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/4qlw09mHu6U/v-deo.html
Holy cripe-o-matic! I pull 8-12 times! I'll practice!
I do 6 strokes per 25m, or 7 if I'm doing a 50m fast (which is not fast at all)
I just started learning how to swim and I’m doing 25 pulls for 25 meters😬. I hope to reduce it soon
By the time I’m 13 I’m going to try to go a 1:16! Thanks for the advice
WHAAT?! You get a dolphin kick for the pullout?! I competed for 14 years and that got us DQed. Have things changes since 2005?
Fares I’m someone who has had issues with my breaststroke kick is the feet! And now I’m having issues with my feet coming apart when I swim butterfly!
Very useful.
So, pulling water beyond the nose line helps our body sink more easily, if I understood correctly?
Sort of , the real problem with pulling beyond is it makes you get caught up in elbows and spend more time with pulling than you should
I like the breaststroke drill 2 to 1 too. Good analysis!👏👍
@@dsk9887i understand.
How long is your glide when you're going all out?
I started learning the breast stroke 2 months ago. I can do 8 kicks for 25 meters comfortable.
Nice vidio, I can do 50 mtr times is 41 sec , how to improve my time 38
2:07 is my average, but i swimm only long distances. Usualy 2000 to 3000 meter 3 to 5 times a week, so 80 to 120 lanes. Stroke count is pretty high, around 12 to 15. I could do much less or swimm much faster on short distance, but so, it is a pretty good cardio 😅
love it ! great content
Just need this , thx
I just started attempting the breast stroke. I need a lot more practice (and instruction) on my kick. When practicing the kick on my back, I hardly move at all and may even be going backwards! 😳
my kick is weak. I could not glide far. how can I improve it? I’m quite small and short, 1m56 tall 45 kg. Does it the cause?
Even shorter swimmers can be good with proper technique! Check out this video for more tips: ua-cam.com/video/CKHOpbEv--M/v-deo.html
I seriously appreciate this! Ty
Thanks for tuning in! Happy swimming :)
