- Three months ago, a little miracle landed in our midst. Not only is Mwana the first wild baby born to our Umani Springs herd, but she is also the daughter of Murera, who is perhaps our greatest orphan success story.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Little Miss Mwana might be tiny, but she has a HUGE personality. ❤️❤️
+Alison It's a good thing because how majestic the African bush elephant (Loxodonta Africana) is and especially since they're listed as endangered by IUCN, National Geographic and Disneynature are protecting them along with Africa's other iconic yet also threatened animals, birds and marine mammals.

Baby Mwana, is having the time of her life with her mommy. All the carers and staff at SWT are taking good care of them as they did with her mom when she was rescued. Many blessings to you all for such an amazing job!!!🥰🍀🐘💖🙏🏻🌟🎉
Oh my Lord! That little bundle of joy is just too cute for words! I love the way the mama’s bring their babies ‘home’ to their human parents for some loving and cuddles. They are magnificent beings. ( the angels in green are pretty awesome as well) 👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰🐘🐘🐘

It just blows my mind ; how can anyone hurt such gentle ,beautiful creatures is beyond me!
Can't imagine a baby elephant who has a life like that, very amazing. And Murera looks like she almost run to keep up with her.
Murera has to pace herself and move a bit more slowly bc the injuries she sustained as a baby have left her compromised and she will always have the affects from them so running isn’t feasible for her as it is for her rambunctious little girl;as a result she keeps to the back of the herd when they’re on the move often bringing up the rear to oversee everything which is typical matriarch behavior. Murera knows that her dedicated friends/Mwana’s allomother’s will be right there to run with the little princess when she’s not able to.🐘🌸🌟

The people at Sheldrick Trust create miracles every day. They take babies who have been traumatized by the deaths of their mothers, drought, attacks by humans or other animals... and turn them into happy and healthy adult elephants. How wonderful that you get to participate in raising a calf who has only known joy in her life.
The keepers at the other locations must be so jealous of the ones at Umani Springs. 😀🐘

It is so beautiful to see how these ex orphan mama ellies bring their babies back to visit the Sanctuary from time to time! The men who raised them are their family too. It makes me cry happy tears ❤.
