- The phone call we received on the evening of 3rd May 2021 made our hearts sink: A gravely injured female elephant had been sighted on the Chyulu Hills. Her right hind leg was shattered, likely as a result of falling in the rocky terrain, leaving her unable to walk. She had resorted to shuffling along in a seated position, struggling with every little movement. To further compound an already tragic situation, the female in question was the mother of two calves. One was a young, milk-dependent baby, the other was much older, around seven years of age.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

My heart broke at the loss of these babies' mother, but I was so uplifted to see how Esoit adapted so well and so fast to the rest of the herd. Thank you so much for all you do for these precious animals!!

I have left a legacy in my will to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. It is so easy, if you are writing a will and have the means. How wonderful that such good people live in this world.

I'll never forget seeing a TV documentary on Dame Daphne's work building up the rescue centre with her husband David and how she struggled to find the best milk alternative to feed the orphans. It's lovely that her daughter's dedication allows this incredible sanctuary to continue and I too am happy to give monthly donations. Love and admiration to all of the dedicated staff here 💕💕💕

Uh oh, this is reminding me of Luggard....beautiful sweet eyes this calf has. Pray that knee holds up for the rest of a long ellie's life!

You all are angels. Sad to tbis baby bull to lose his mother in such a tragic way. I know he will be surrounded with TLC from his keepers and the other elephants. He now has a second home, a second family, and a second chance in life.
His back leg reminded me so much of our sweet Luggard that I think it was fate that I should adopt him today. Welcome to the family Esoit....You, Rama and Ziwadi are now members of the herd of my heart! ♥️🐘

adopting him for several years and gifting his adoption to a friend, as well, following his progress and hard times too, it was heartbreaking to learn of his death. We have nothing but love and respect for all the nurturing and guarding, rescuing and veterinary care from all those involved in these elephants care at the Sheldrick Rescue. What a dear little elephant! So glad to know that your kindness will help them all.

I think these elephants sense these things.I heard elephants are very intelligent and when a love one dies they mourn.They will all gather around to say their last goodbyes with their trunks.Thank you for rescuing him.He looks so happy now.
It doesn't cost much to help. I give $600 US a year for a little milk formula for the babies and my adopted orphan, Larro.

I am sad that she had to lose her life but glad that you were there for her and her baby and that you were able and kind enough to end her suffering. Without your help the calf would have languished, suffered and died as well.

The sight of all those young orphans was at once beautiful and heartbreaking to realize they had all lost their mothers and herds but amazingly had been able to form their own new herd of all orphans.

Babies are truly resilient in ways that just leave us in awe. It was unfortunate that his mother was so gravely injured while he is still so young, but life in the wild is hard and dangerous and euthanizing her was likely a kindness.

I am so excited to have Esort part of my family today as I have excitedly started to foster him as of tomorrow. I am so saddened by the loss of his mother, we can never replace her love but along with the special carers at Sheldrick's we can offer him love and shelter. I am hoping his right hind knee will not hamper him as a growing bull and am sure the Sheldrick Trust will give him whatever therapy he might need. What a little beauty he is and I love how the other orphans showed such love!! Blessings sweet Esoit you have won my heart!

He needs to be closely watched, baby elephants are extremely fragile,band he has seen his mom suffer, and knows he has lost his Mom. It is devastating to any baby
@@jaycuzman625 for sure, but they are excellent keepers who handle this dramatic part of the orphans' lives, so well. In the wild, he wouldn't have survived.

@2:15, such sad sad eyes. I love the fact that such young elephants can be saved, but I hate the fact that their mothers die and the families are separated. Yes, I’m probably being unreasonable, but grief is grief, and _it’s_ not always reasonable, either!

Although I cried when I read that Esoit's mother had to be euthonized which was so very sad, I'm happy that you were able to save her baby who will grow up in your expert and loving care. You really are wonderful people and I'm so glad I donate to you.

My Heart breaks every time I hear of the loss of an ellie. But I am so appreciative for the TRUST and the love and care they have for each one of the little orphans. I too support the TRUST, and have four little adopted elephants. We have a trip planned in September to go see them. I’m looking forward to meeting this new little guy.

It's so heartbreaking to read about Elephants in the Wild like this one that was still Mother two young elephants-- all living animals must "Pass On " eventually--- Thank you for making this Mom Elephant's "Journey's End " a much easier one for Her-- She does not know what happened to her two Youngsters--- but all of us here know they are well taken care of-- and Somewhere in the Great Beyond--- Someone else knows it.
