I remember Haystacks wrestling Murphy here in N. Ireland. I was amazed how far the ring moved across the floor when Haystacks crushed him against the turnbuckles. He even managed to bust a hole through the canvas but injured himself and couldn't take part in the Royale Rumble at the end of the night. I was in the front row and he walked right past me. He was never the 6'11 he was billed at but christ he was MASSIVE.
My parents friend was the camera man for the wrestling for years we met many of the wrestlers including Haystacks. Be the hokey he was vast. My dad is five eight so judging him off that Haystacks was 6"7 or 6"8 . I've also seen a picture of him standing opposite Andre who most people would agree was about 6" 10 so that would make sense from the photo but Jesus what a huge man a proper monster heel. Yeah it was a pity WCW didn't keep his mystique longer but at least US audiences got to see him . He was lovely too.
Great match. Nothing like a heel v heel brawl. Good effort by Murphy but never seen him brutalised in the ring like this. Only Haystacks could have done it.
Is there a wrestling poster for this because I was there at Normanton Cummunity Center it was a good wrestling bill so if any body finds a poster for it can you put it on please
I think even though it was a heel vs heel match, the crowd sounded like they were more behind Murphy than Haystacks. It didn't matter who he was against, face or heel, everyone booed Haystacks out of the building. He was hated, but boy could he dominate.
I often wonder if all the blows and punches Haystacks took to his stomach had anything to do with his eventual demise from cancer of the stomach? Same goes for Drew McDonald who we sadly lost 3 years ago, and was a one time tag partner of Haystacks.
In all fairness he gave more than he took. But I did think that as well. Over time it would mount up. Also back in 70s especially; the halls were full of smokers and in some of the matches the smoke is quite visible.
I also forgot to mention Bomber Pat Roach who also died from cancer of the stomach at a relatively young age, so that’s three examples right there. Maybe it’s akin to footballers getting dementia from heading the ball so often?
Calhoun was just a big unfit slob. Saw Murphy wrestle many times in the 60s and he was a tough one- using his head but as a great finisher. Died very young.

you know what, kids in the 80s loved to hate him, he was the most famous villain of British wrestling, it was all entertainment, he wasn’t supposed to be a wrestler
Martin Ruane, best known to European audiences as Giant Haystacks did wrestle as "Loch Ness" and "the Loch Ness Monster" in Stampede (early 80s) and WCW (mid 90s, by which time he was ill and past it sadly although I sill thought they could have protected him a bit longer before jobbing him out to Hogan and the Giant).
@@LostyDublin absolutely . If he'd gone to wwf the summer before wrestlemania four they could have gotten a brilliant seven month run with hogan out of him and then either a monster run with the ic belt or out him in a tag . He and Davey boy could have had a great feud . He could have come back to Britain in the early ninties with all the knowledge of how the US was working and that could have really helped the British scene .
Never met him personally, but i have been told that Luke Mcmasters was a really nice and approachable man.
Rest in peace big fella.
Rest in peace big man we loved u even when u became Loch Ness x

Slightly more entertaining than wwe

I love the kid who sneaks in to punch Haystacks at 8:21. That's a story to show your grandkids on UA-cam!
Phil is in love everyone 💕 congratulations Phil 👏
@@matimus100 Uh...
Giant haystacks was actually 6ft 8 inches tall and this match i believe is from 1988.
Taking the corner cushions should be immediate disqualification
The only time Skull Murphy ever got babyface heat!
I noticed Giant Haystacks now has a card in 80s mania Wrestling. He’s called Woolley Mammoth 👍
in fairness that is a better name than Loch Ness
I lived in Salford. My dad had the odd drink with Haystacks dad
How big was Haystack's dad?

@Aaron Digby That was a different Haystacks.
Lovely match
That's might be a bloke calling himself Skull Murphy, but that's not THE Skull Murphy!!
I never liked it when someone reused the name of a true great. I remember the REAL Skull Murphy from the 1960s in the Carolinas.
Rare bout where the crowd are fully behind Skull Murphy.
Brings back meomerys on Saturday after noon Kent Walton saying have a good week till next week where's the years gone ?
Did the announcer say 6ft 11? Looks about 6ft4.
I've seen these 2 at Weston-super-Mare,around 1990.the top rope came off when stax bounced off 😂

More likely his organs were constantly under strain dealing with all that weight

Murphy pulling Haystacks' hair? Would he like it if it was done to him? Oh................
Remember, if you're not cheating you're not trying
I'm sure I remember a match between these two where Skull almost got his gaiter hold on Haystacks. Anyone else remember seeing it?
that one guy who couldnt decide if he was Haystacks, or Loch Ness............
Skull Murphy used to drink in a pub in Droylsden Manchester.
I used to go to the wrestling at the town hall it was always the same wrestlers every time all wrestling each other 🤣🤣
All big men have the same weakness, their legs, just keep kicking the legs.
Calhoun was just a big unfit slob.

Died very young.
The original skull murphy died in 1970 whos this one
When two baddies are against each other who do the crowd cheer for. Skull Murphy seems to be the least least popular.
paul brown
Imposters. The real skull Murphy wrestled in the 1960s same with haystacks Calhoun
I can't decide between the fools in the ring or the bigger fools who paid money to watch this. But wait, I'm also a fool for watching.

Oh, God! If it was against Murphy I'D cheer for haystacks!
Is Zeus your God Richard?
Haystacks was ripped
The skull hardest head in the bussiness
Like the way the Wanker of a second stopped a member of the public from trying to put the cushion back on the corner post.
How Haystacks could ever be classed as a Wrestler is beyond me, he can hardly walk !
you know what, kids in the 80s loved to hate him, he was the most famous villain of British wrestling, it was all entertainment, he wasn’t supposed to be a wrestler
Meatball Robinson vs John "The Hammer" Jefferson
Skull Murphy LOOKS a lot like the OLD Skull Murphy! TONY

He used to be Loch Ness Monster.

WCW hadn't a clue how to book monster heels right. WWF could have made a big big run with Haystacks work given a chance.
Arthur i thought Haystacks real name was Luke McMasters i heard Kent Walton saying that was his name
@@jameshope398 like McMasters was just an alias. His real name was Martin Austin Ruane.
