If I were to open the capsules, split the powder in them and take approximately half a capsule per day (i.e. 1.25mg per day), would this be effective? Or would it not because the capsule has been opened so the powder would already be exposed on consumption? Many thanks.

my question about oral minoxidil is that what if you are not a diffuse thinner, but a receding hairline kind of guy. won't oral minoxidil affect you because with topical you can apply directly to the receding hairline ,but oral will affect your the whole head.
That is why I start on 2.5mg oral minox as I'm a diffuse thinner. I have a full head of hair, it's just very thin (I'm 52 so I guess that's aging for you). we shall see if it helps. I've been on DUT for 3.5 years which completely has stopped any hairloss/thinning.
What dose of oral minoxidil would you recommend for a post-menopausal woman in excellent health? My blood pressure is in the normal range but at the lower end of the range. I am also taking oral finasteride at 5 mg per day with no side effects.
Yes you lose everything on your head. Not sure about beard or other body hair though. There's a few people I've seen like with minoxidil beards who've been able to keep around 60% of their new beard follicles
Does minoxidil break down in sunlight like sunscreen? Is it OK to put in hair and then go outside without a hat? Or will that form some weird breakdown product which causes hair to fall out?

The side effects are typically associated with the higher doses. Stick with 2.5mg or less and you're unlikely to experience side effects if you are otherwise in good health. With oral minoxidil, a bigger dose isn't necessarily a more effective dose. It just increases the risk of side effects, some of them quite nasty.
Btw the side effect of bodyhair growth 'should' be stopped/nullified or at least slowed down if you're taking oral finasteride because body hair relies on DHT to grow unlike scalp hair. I'm just letting people know because some people could either want more bodyhair or the opposite.

@ytsux9259 based on the dosage they take right? If they take low dosage, I think they might not get any side effects
Hi doctor , it's been five years for me using topical minoxidil. In the initial years I found it effective but now I can see the hair thinning a lot so should I additionally take 2.5 mg oral minoxidil at night with topical 5% minoxidil at morning.

Hello, I was recently prescribed 2.5mg oral minoxidil capsules to take daily. If I were to open the capsules, split the powder in them and take approximately half a capsule per day (i.e. 1.25mg per day), would this be effective? Or would it not because the capsule has been opened so the powder would already be exposed on consumption? Many thanks.

I've just started a 2.5mg daily dose of minoxidile in combination with taking finisteride daily.
I did use the topical version for a while but found it difficult to maintain consistency as hated the mess it would leave my hair in after applying it. So I didnt really see much benefit.
Hopefully I get on better with the tablet instead
How's it going so far?

Yes. They work in different ways.

No, you can use any formulation.

slayer1200 thanks for letting know. I watched that already i have been doing it partially since i started i apply foam version of foligain(used regaine, kirkland foams aswell) once in a day & keep for 8 hours while sleeping. my question about oral minoxidil is that what if you are not a diffuse thinner, but a receding hairline kind of guy. won't oral minoxidil affect you because with topical you can apply directly to the receding hairline ,but oral will affect your the whole head.
That is true.

Hi. In your opinion how common are the oral minox side effects...
The side effects are typically associated with the higher doses. Stick with 2.5mg or less and you're unlikely to experience side effects if you are otherwise in good health. With oral minoxidil, a bigger dose isn't necessarily a more effective dose. It just increases the risk of side effects, some of them quite nasty.
would 1.25mg be a suitable dose?
Yes try that and increase to 2.5mg if results are not as satisfactory

Btw the side effect of bodyhair growth 'should' be stopped/nullified or at least slowed down if you're taking oral finasteride because body hair relies on DHT to grow unlike scalp hair.
I'm just letting people know because some people could either want more bodyhair or the opposite.
That's unfortunately not true. Body hair is not very DHT sensitive compared to scalp hair.
