Really good thing he got there in the end. He thought he would never win Wimbledom, after losing those finals! It was such a similar story with the female tennis player, Jana Novotna. Yes - that is a pretty incredible run. He beat the 20th, 6th, 4th and 3rd ranked players in the draw, and Roddick wasn't ranked but was a serious danger on grass with his serve. We forget that we almost had the match-up I was hoping for - an Agassi-Ivanisevic rematch. We were only denied that because Rafter beat Agassi 8-6 in the 5th in the semi-finals. I think Agassi would have beaten Goran if he had made it past Rafter.

He arrived with two Sergio Tacchini shirts and three racquets. After beating Rusedski, the marketing dept. from Tacchini sent a package with ten shirts, shorts and socks, Goran sent it back and said:”No thanks, I’ll keep washing my two shirts, that was the sign of your lack of faith in me, that keeps on motivating me.” And the rest is history.

I was so happy when Goran won, I remember following the score on the internet at work, so much stress. Gotta feel sorry for Rafter, such a classy player, good thing he got 2 US Open, he deserved more slams.
i've called Goran an idol since 1994. And I remember this day as if it was yesterday. I watched the match with my Mom and my wife (was my girlfriend). And I cried like a baby when he won it all. I still relive the moment every once in a while by rewatching the match. Can't see it enough times.
I only started watching tennis in the 1990s, and only really watched Wimbledon. Goran quickly became my favourite player, because he wore his heart on his sleeve. So many players then and now are like robots, never showing pleasure or despair, but with Goran it was all on his face and I loved him for that! I remember watching the 2001 final - I'd recently finished university and was bumming around doing very little while I looked for a job. I'd drag my parent's TV into the garden, put it in the shade, and drink my Mum's gin in the sunshine while I watched! The day of the final was incredible, the match had me on my feet screaming at the TV, and the neighbours wondered what the hell was going on! 😂 When he won I went mental... In the years since, I've rarely had time to even see the highlights let alone watch a whole match. This video made me really nostalgic for that golden summer, when I had no responsibility, no money, and nothing else to do but watch the tennis. Oh how I miss those days... 😅
I never knew Goran's story. It's heartbraking indeed! I am from Germany and congratulate him for this fantastic achievement after so many attempts. Well done, well deserved!
Recalling the 2001 finals Ivanisevic once said that he would have shot himself if he´d lost again - typically Goran. ;) It´s one of the most emotional and most deserved title wins in Wimbledon history, for sure. After Sampras Ivanisevic was arguably the most dominant player at Wimbledon in the 90´s and it would have been odd if he would never have won the title. The only drawback of the 2001 title match was that Patrick Rafter was denied a Wimbledon title once again after he lost to Sampras in 2000. He himself would have well deserved a Wimbledon crown as he was a great sportsman and personality.
I always get happy and sad thinking about this match because Goran win was sort of like an unofficial end to the Sampras generation, many of these players wouldn't dominate the sport anymore. Sampras would retire in couple of years and the way game was being played changed dramatically, becoming a hard baseline rally. It was only fitting that the last great serve volley player other than Sampras won Wimbledon a final goodbye to the Serve Volley Tennis.
I keep going to this video... Reminds me of grit, desire, hunger, and epitome of human feelings. I saw this match live and still remember jumping around when he won. I always loved his big aces.

I was so happy for him back then, as a german I watched a lot of tennis in the 90s and while I was of course siding with the players from my mothercountry like Becker or Stich I always enjoyied watching Goran. He was so emotional and so entertaining and he deserved to win Wimbeldon so much. @@danmeadowsmusic Good choice. Monumental 2012 win
Such a good editing job on this video, a gem to watch!
they didnt even mention all his aces, or show them, so I would say they cut out oo much. I think he set a Wimbledon record for total aces
I thought it was terrible. Showing half a point from his first 6 macthes. I had to pause to see who was he playing against.

Yes!
I danas se naježin i suze krenu od sreće ka da san ja osvojila 🙏❤️🌞
This is the most deserved grand slam win in history
Roddick for me if he had won it 😞
I was so happy for him back then, as a german I watched a lot of tennis in the 90s and while I was of course siding with the players from my mothercountry like Becker or Stich I always enjoyied watching Goran. He was so emotional and so entertaining and he deserved to win Wimbeldon so much. Players like Sampras or Federer have won the tournament way more often then Goran, but whenever there will be a list of great all england winners, Goran will always be on it, side by side with those guys.
What a player, what a good man ... two gentlemen with big hearts! I Love them both...
👍🙋
Best Wimbledon story to this day.
How time flies - back then, Goran was a Wimbledon champ. Now, he's sitting in Novak Djokovic's box
Even though I may not have seen it live, this is one of my favourite matches of all time.
This is one of the things that makes sport a test of character - the fallen great coming back as an underdog
He will always be one of my favorite players, and this match the best I have ever seen.
A day that I will absolutely never forget. Celebrating with my father throughout the house
I was 16, when I saw the live telecast.. Still remember his celebrations.. What a player.. He deserved it 🏆
I played and was consumed with tennis in mid 90s. Favorite players were Sampras, Agassi, Chang, Becker, Goran, & so many greats. Love the greats before & since but my goodness 🔥
When I watch this I always get anxious about those double faults even though I know the outcome. Goosebumps all over the place.
i have watched all his finals , man i was so glad that he finally won it :)
I remember watching these matches as a 14 year old, never been more happier for someone else to see them complete a circle of life in a way, still well deserved and on of the most remarkable runs in sports history
Imam 36 godina i Srbin sam. Ako se dobro sjecam tenis sam počeo da gledam uz mečeve sa Wimbldona tj kada je Goran osvojio. A danas evo Nole hara a Goran trener. Hvala svima 💪🏻💪🏻👏👏❤
Losing every final before and then the victory in one of his last matches with a wild card... that was awesome!
That crazy Goran! I remember watching him get to the champion match. What a journey, lol, taking off his shirt, throwing his racket down. I was so glad he won!
Never give up!Goran was a great champion
Goran, cavallo pazzo....incredibile giocatore....tifavo per lui....e lo tifo ancora....grandissimo ragazzo e giocatore....
That Wimbledon and especially that final was how my dad and I bonded for the first time, we love an underdog story! Thanks Goran
Ivanesevic win was so so special. Always wanted him to lift the Wimbledon trophy n finally it came as a wild card entry. U r an inspiration Goran
He was very well liked with the British crowd, a great character
In a few words...simply heartbreaking ❤️ Thanks God for giving us Goran🙏
One of the greatest moments in tennis history
This is my happiest sporting event to watch as a fan.
I remember watching this final. So happy he finally won! And to think he did it as a 'washed up' wildcard makes it all the more sweeter.
I cried so MUCH that day!
I was CRAZY about Pat at the time but found myself rooting for Goran.
To this day, it's my #1 all-time favorite match.
Ivanisevic loved for his ACE service. I was watching the whole match and praying for him.
Thanx for sharing this good memories. What great characters played on court back in the days...
Most emotional final ever
Ivanisevic was my favorite Player,His serves alone was legendary.
Was overjoyed for Goran at that time.. gosh it's been more than 20 years now and still gives the chills.
What a phenomenal wildcard winner! Trip down memory lane
Goran had the most beautiful and genuine smile among all the tennis players I am aware of
Loved Goran ,was the best final of all., time well deserved.
Oh man, that crowd, amazing
I cried when he won.
Goran was no slouch : 22 titles and 27 second places.
Many would settle with half of that for their careers.
Najjača faca tenisa svih vremena!
+ 9 in pairs + 2 olympic medals
He was stellar. Beast!
I was watching the the final match live. Ivanisevic's victory was one of the greatest moments in sports history. To be an underdog and to win against all odds is a demonstration of pure spirit.
I love Goran and I am so happy that he finally won Wimbledon. So deserved. That is not to say that Rafter did not also deserve to win this tournament... I wish he also did. Both were class acts.
Was such a fabulous match so glad Goran won well deserved.
