    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bullitt (Steve McQueen) refuses to back down when the Charger trying to follow him takes it up a notch, leading to a chase through the streets of San Francisco.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
In one of his most famous roles, Steve McQueen stars as tough-guy police detective Frank Bullitt. The story begins with Bullitt assigned to a seemingly routine detail, protecting mafia informant Johnny Ross (Pat Renella), who is scheduled to testify against his Mob cronies before a Senate subcommittee in San Francisco. But when a pair of hitmen ambush their secret location, fatally wounding Ross, things don't add up for Bullitt, so he decides to investigate the case on his own. Unfortunately for him, ambitious senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn), the head of the aforementioned subcommittee, wants to shut his investigation down, hindering Bullitt's plan to not only bring the killers to justice but discover who leaked the location of the hideout.

If only someone were to do something similar today. I can tell that these sounds were recorded in either harsh conditions or just bad microphones. It was the late 60's after all. I don't think most sound production was high fidelity until somewhere in the 70's.

I was a 13 year-old kid when I saw Bullitt the movie. The car chase scene was epic then and still is, in my opinion, the best car chase movie scene ever. I just remember being in the theater, and leaning left and right as Steve raced through the San Francisco streets. I think we paid around $1.35 to get in the movie. I believe the understeer and overshoot on that turn was genuine, and McQueen stuck his head out for the reverse burnout to show the audience that he was driving... makes it look that much more real. Actually, this was duplicated...by Ford Motor Company. They took this video and turned it into a commercial for a small Ford sporty car. Basically, they digitally " dropped " Steve McQueen into the driver's seat of a car sold in Europe, the Ford Puma, and digitally replaced the Mustang we see here with the Ford Puma. I wouldn't be surprised if the video would be on UA-cam somewhere.

Yeah except the Mustang engine audio is overdubbed- a GT40's engine audio is what you're hearing in the film- hence the double-clutching which would've been unnecessary on the Mustang. The Charger's 440 engine audio made it into the film. These facts I was not aware of until recently.

@@charlesvan13 The 390 was no slouch though. :-) My first car was a 1967 Ford Galaxie 500 2-door fastback with the 390 and three-on-the-tree, and it was wicked fast. However, I often wondered if something had been done with the engine to make it that fast, because after I sold it a few years later, I (of course) wanted it back (because my father had talked me into buying a 1974 Vega, which outright sucked), so every time a 2-door Galaxie appeared in the paper for sale with the 390, I went and looked at them, and none of them were nearly that fast. Possibly because they were usually automatics, or possibly because of other factors, such as gear ratios, etc. I really miss that car. 10 mpg city and 15 hwy., but gas was cheap.

I didn't realize that Dodge had the technology back in the 60's to give the Charger self repairing and respraying fenders/front and rear wings especially after it hit another car after 53 seconds and then lost some paint after scraping off the wall at 2:25 seconds whilst losing yet another hubcap. Either that or this car must have been Chritine's cousin!!!

  • @digitalmagicAR

One of the best car chases on film. Certainly the best up to that time. Yes they undercranked lots of it, the Charger loses multiple wheel covers and they pass the same cars multiple times but this chase did a great job of putting the viewer in the action. It changed movie and TV car chases from that point on

I'm sure when it was filmed it just looked like any other street in America. But now specific classics stand out. They passed the same white 67/68 Firebird about 4 times. I'm not complaining, def my favorite muscle car, but it was noticeable. Just nice to see a chase without 50 cuts between unnecessary shifting, feet on pedals, skidding tires ... they just drove em like they stole em.

Yeah they had cameras set up at 4 different locations and showed them in sequence to make the chase seem longer than it actually was. You can see it first from inside the car then outside the car coming to you then outside the car going away that's why the green beetle is in four different shots.

What is really awful is that American cars cannot turn round a bend. In 1968, 6.4 litre V8 with 4 four gears unable to turn ! How much power is lost in those crap engines, they could not reach 100 mph. How badly designed were they. Comments above rated that as a good car chase. They crash a heavy slow car and pretend it never happened!
