As i've said before, the brilliance of it all, is that this reveals all these years Luffy has been only utilizing the most basic aspect of his devil fruit. He's defeated Warlords of the Sea, High Bounty Pirates, a Guy who called Himself God, Pacifistas, and more! All with just the most basic effect, not even utilized to it's fullest potential!
My theory is because his power comes from imagination and he only knew it as the gum gum fruit that gave rubber. The only powers he could imagine were the basic rubber ones

Yup.. he utilize it to fight electricity. He smartly used it against croc's suna suna no mi, etc. But only at the edge of death that his true form is unveiled.
Maybe gear 2nd to 4th was also just part of luffy's imagination that is made possible by his devil fruit.

I don't even watch One Piece, but I knew this episode was one EVERYONE was waiting for. And after seeing the fight myself, I can see why there was so much hype. Love it! This is more or less how I thought the "Drums of Liberation" would sound.
Most fanmade versions I've seen have missed the point by making the theme super-epic, with dramatic orchestras and all that. However, in the manga, Luffy says how his heartbeat "sounds funny" and he can't stop laughing. Not to mention, the idea behind his transformation is for it to be silly and comical. So the jungle-drums are just spot-on!
Right, comical and bouncy, but with weight behind them. After all, this is the rebirth of an ancient God, summoned by death to give life
