If you are looking at a first pistol for new shooters, inexpensive training or just a lot of fun, check out the Glock 44, chambered in .22 lr.
While it is easy to get lost in the Glock naming convention, the G44 is a Glock 19 sized .22 pistol. With cheaper ammunition and low recoil it makes a great pistol to start people training on. Especially with the addition of a silencer like the Erector 22 by Q LLC. Also, being Glock 19 sized, it has holster compatibility with everything, to include weapon lights. So it is a great training analog to your 9mm pistol.

There is a company making aluminum slides for these with optic cuts on them, I forget the companies name but I love my glock 44. Bought it when it came out and I have thousands of rounds through it and it's probably my favorite glock I own

Yup that's the Nelson Precision Manufacturing G44X slide. Fun piece.

Had some of that updraft at the range today too. And some left draft, and some right draft, quite a bit of down draft.....

The number is related to Glocks patent number for that release. I have the 44 and it eats the Federal Auto Match from Walmart with no issues.

I know model numbers are bit confusing but they are corresponding to Glock Patents. Glock still makes other products that's why we don't have a every single number glock

I switched over to an fn 509 specifically because they make the 502 and both are optics ready

I have the Nelson Precision Manufacturing slide for RDS use, specifically the G44X EDC with the lightening cuts. For me, the G44 is also meant to be a cheaper training analogue to the full size 9mm. Because it is simple blowback, managing reciprocating weight matters a bunch in order to keep it reliably feeding. On my scale, the NPM G44X EDC slide without a dot weighs the same as the OEM slide. Then I chose a SIG Romeo Zero Elite which is only 0.4 - 0.5 ounces. Then to top it off, I only use high-velocity .22 loads, such as CCI Mini-Mags, and with the extra velocity, and just barely over the OEM reciprocating weight, I have had flawless function.
Now 6061 aluminum is not a great material for a slide, but they previously made 7075 slides which had numerous poor reliability reports. My line of thinking is if I can get so many thousand (maybe 10k?) rounds out of the slide and it gives up the ghost, then that's the cost of doing business by wanting a Glock .22 with a RDS for training, and I can just pick up a new slide. Outside this context, I would say try out another manufacturer's .22 optics-ready options, though I've heard problems with FN 502 and SIG P322, so pick your poison.

100% agree with your review! Got a couple of these for my kids to work on fundamentals, upgraded slide to allow for DOT use in the future and will eventually upgrade trigger as well but forcing my kids to learn to work through less than ideal setups to become better shooters in the future.

I've had my G44 for some time now - mine will eat any .22 ammo I've thrown at it and has been an excellent trainer companion weapon for my G19.

Great video! I've tought about one of these for a while now and you pretty much pushed me over the edge as you answered two main question: 1) It powers through most .22 ammo and 2) Holster compatability with my G19.

My friend bought one of these for $375 brand new and it was jamming on him, he then sold it to me for $125 and I ran some bulk ammo through it and had no problem.. I'm assuming it was how he was loading the mags. Anyway long story short I gave him an extra $50 cause it didn't feel right and gifted it to my Fiancé for our 10th anniversary and she's getting really good at shooting now. Definitely a great plinker and super cheap!

Sights were basically crap. My own gun shot low and could not adjust anymore. Seems to be known issue. So replaced the rear sight with Glock 17 Gen 5 original what seemed to be better height. I am pretty sure this will fix the issue because many shooters have replaced the Glock 44 sight with after market better ones. I just happened to have my old Glock 17 sights laying around. Old came out easily with wood stick and small hammer. Bushed the other one in with small piece of wood and did not have to use small hammer. Gen 5 rear sight is polymer too and if it flies out some day i will buy better sights.
They really should make slide for red dot for Glock 44. .22 LR and red dot could be really fun.

the barrel in my glock.44 got stupid dirty really fast and was throwing shots off of czone silouette at 15 yards away from amount of build up in barrel in under 500rds without a suppressor so i would keep an eye on that

Adding an MOS would upset the functioning of the slide. That’s why the slide is polymer with metal inserts.

Limited ammo choices though unlike the 44 which seems to eat anything

My personal opinion on the red dot for new shooters, I would say that learning the fundamentals with irons first is better, shooting irons can be more difficult, but the skill transfers to 90+% of other firearms, and in my experience learning them first will translate way easier to a red dot than visa versa. I agree the option would be nice though, especially if it would help mimic your edc for training. The other consideration is that everyone's eyes are different, astigmatism and red dots don't usually mesh well and can negate a lot of the advantages. If the purpose is to introduce shooters, it's good to keep in mind. Just my two cents
Great review, I'm looking forward to adding this to my collection 😊

great to see your boys. an optic cut would be nice, but do you think the round has enough energy to consistently cycle the (slightly heavier) slide? “updraft”..those are the worst.
