Great reaction Will! They sing in Norwegian (Nynorsk, which is spoken on the west coast of Norway), but the last part (acapella) is in Old Norse. This song amongst others from Wardruna and Einar Selvik (vocalist and songwriter) are played in the series “Vikings”. In one scene you can see Einar standing on shore singing “Helvegen” while the vikings sails off to England. “Helvegen” (path, road to Hel) In Norse mythology, Hel is an underground realm of the dead where it was believed that most people ended up when they died. In Norse cosmology, north is the direction towards cold and death. Therefore, it is understandable that Hel is cold and intractable, and that the road there leads "north and down". Hel is also the name of the ruler of the underworld. She is motherly and terrifying, and her skin is part blue-black like that of a corpse and part human-colored. She is very greedy and does not easily give up the dead who end up with her.
For Kalandra you should check out Brave New World live at Kulturkirken Jacob! Wardruna is the band. Einar Selvik, the man with the braided beard is the lead vocalist.
As people have rightly said, Wardruna (meaning Secret Runes) is a band created by the singer Einar Selvik. The quote at the end is from the Havamal, a section of the poetic Edda. This is a song about death and passing. It tells of the soul going to Hel (Hel is the underworld of the regular dead in Norse mythology, the place of those not fallen in battle who go to Valhalla. So Vegen is the verb going and Hel the place name (which also happens to be the name of the goddess of the dead too).
Think you might like Heilung. They have a couple of live videos like Heilung - Krigsgalder (Warherald), Alfadhirhaiti(Names of the allfader) and Anoana (Grandmother)
I appreciate your dedication to improving your reactions! 👍 Wardruna is the name of the band. Aurora was already a Wardruna fan (she loves Norwegian folk music), so I'm sure she really enjoyed doing this with them (and vice versa). They (with Aurora) also did a very cool live performance of this outdoors near a cave. Only fan-recorded, but maybe something you want to check out on your own time. Kalandra is freaking awesome. If you haven't already recorded something of theirs, I'd recommend starting with Brave New World (Live at Kulturkirken Jakob). Their lead singer, Katrine Stenbekk, is often compared to Aurora, but she's awesome in her own right.
Thank you for the kind words and support @Tarkus_ It’s a grind but I love growing and trying to improve something in each video! Thank you for your recommendations as well!
Oooh Kalandra is one of my favs. Highly recommend Borders (music video), Brave New World (live at Kulturkirken Jakob) and of course their cover of Helvegen!!! ❤❤❤
Nothing is better than this version, Einar's voice is so powerful and even though I am not a huge fan of Aurora, their voices match so well it's bordering on perfection. Mitt folks musikk.
i got to see them live about 2 years ago and it was amazing and felt so good to just be in the audience. There is something deep in the human body that Wardruna's music just calls to.
Wardruna is the group. And they are at the forefront of the European Folk-Tribal music genre. You should def check them out in a reaction or just in your own time. Their music is so meditative! -Lyfjaberg (Healing-mountain) -Kvitravn (White Raven) (Also, FYI, you may not have realized it but Warduna's videos have subtitles. Click on the CC.) Another great band in this genre to check out is Heilung - they are my favorite! Again, check them out in your own time if you can't in a reaction - they're too great to miss! I feel connected to my ancient ancestors every time I listen to them. Heilung (which means Healing in German) base their music on ancient Germanic peoples of the Iron and Viking ages. They're often referred to as "amplified history." I recommend: - Anoana (the music video) - Norupu (music video) - In Maidjan (Live from Lifa concert) - Othan (Live from Lifa concert) - or just the full Lifa concert. it's in full on their yt channel - Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga Musical Performance | Game Awards 2023 on IGN yt channel
The game awards performance was my introduction to Heilung and holy shit what an introduction it was. I didn't expect to get teared up at music during the game awards lol
Congrats on reaching the gold at the end of the rainbow... (Now you can backtrack to wardruna's and kalandras stuff) Wardruna is the whole band, yes, led by the singer Einar Selvig. Amongst other things, they did actually make a lot of the film music for the "Vikings" series. Btw: the song is actually not Old Norse, but a somewhat archaic version of modern Norwegian - any Norwegian can understand it with a little concentration. The verse/poem (stanzas) at the end are however in old norse; think they are from the Edda (9th century).
@@lillm6874 well, nynorsk is Norwegian, and I also stand my ground on the "somewhat archaic" part; this isn't exactly the kind of nynorsk you would hear from a newsreader on national public radio... ;-)
Hi, dont know which version it was but you could torn on the subtitles. And I love the harmonies here and generally vibes. Of course Aurora start and transition into his voice is also great :). Ps. This setup with camera and picture is better in my opinion :).
Just came across your channel, I love Wardruna. There are these awesome songs would love your reaction, believe me you won't be disappointed. New subscriber ☺💖 *Wardruna - Kvitravn (White Raven) - Official music video* *Wardruna - Raido (Official music video)* *FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris, Einar Selvik*
Well, its not old norse -Its in what is called new Norwegian ( a reconstruction of Norwegian after the Danish’s occupation for 400 years) - in the end you can hear a part of Håvamål - who means speak from the Highest- meaning Odin) actually he had to scare half of the dead with Frøya ( Freya) - but she vanished after christianity tok over. Her place was not Vallhall but Folkheim. A lot off wrongs in “ Hollywood “ version of old norse mythology
Ive been working through your past videos and really enjoying it. You need to check out Ren " the hunger". Its shows off rens rapping and it also shows off his ability to beatbox
I had to smile , how could you possibly think that the woman in the background and shadows would be Wardruna and that the band were backing singers. Just seems strange to me LOL. BTY You got the set up looking good on this.
im curious what your favorite type of music is? Im in Australia (originally from Boston) and there is an incredible music scene here . Id love to see you check out some aussie greats.
Hello, would be better reaction, if you learned (before, after, or during, does not matter) what this song is about. Get some rest. Or maybe not, sleep deprivation might have some interesting effects :D (Have you read the novel Insomnia by Stephen King? lovely book).

English lyrics
Who will sing me
Into the death-sleep sling me
When I walk the road to Hel
And the tracks I tread
Are cold, so cold
I sought the songs
I sent the songs
When the deepest well
Offered drops so mighty
Of Valfather’s pledge
I know it all, Odin
Where you hid your eye
Early or in fading day
Still the raven knows if I fall
When you stand by the gate of Hel
And when you must tear loose
Follow you I shall
Across the bridge of Gjöll
With my song
You will be free from the bonds that bind you
You are free from the bonds that bound you
[Håvamål - The High Ones' Speech, Poetic Edda]
Cattle die, kinsmen die
You yourself will also die
But the word about you will never die
If you win a good reputation
Cattle die, kinsmen die
You yourself will also die
I know one thing that never dies
The reputation of those who died
Great reaction Will!

He did a lot of the music for the “ Vikings “ series. You were spot on 😊
Yes, Helvegen was used in 3 episodes (but without Aurora), and other songs was used as well.
FYI to all: enabling CC on this source video give the lyrics in English.
Not only could it be backing music for Vikings, it was. Season 2 episode 8. Song is about death and crossing over.

Kalandra's cover og this is insane! 🎉
Great suggestion for a reaction video!
While your at it u can also have a look at Gåte 😄
