I had to do that to my stat on the scooby at the side of the road took the rad out etc then walk miles to a scrap yard and found 20lt of bottles water in a scraped van👍👍 got home diagnosed head gaskets ☹👍👍 keep up the good work and content
Loved that subliminal prompt to press the “like” button in the thermostat housing! Your not as green as you’re cabbage-looking Keith ha ha! Keep well my friend 😊👍
Great advice regarding the thermostat, and may I say, you Keith, certainly have an impressive tool and if I’m not very much mistaken it looks as if you’ve been giving it a good hard polish. A shiny long tool makes for a happy man😂 I also agree everyone regularly watching your videos should hit the subscribe button, it costs nothing, you get a notification of a new video, and most importantly it gives Keith and Mark a bit of recognition for the effort they put into entertaining us on the channel 👍👍👍👍 Take Care Stay Safe Everyone Regards Dave
Snap! I have the same “spanner”. The engine in my 1981 Mini was painted black. However, when it was degreased you can see it was yellow. I quite like the original Mowog green but, yours is looking good in the engine. Maybe because yellow and blue complement each other.
Your pitch about subscribing is the first one to ever make me consider to be perfectly honest. The fact you are smaller in size than those who work full time and get millions of views gives me more reason to support you. You've helped a bunch with me figuring out our restoration so if a sub is something in return you have mine! Keep it up, cheers, Tom.
Enjoyed this video. Everything is so spotless. You do great work Keith. I fired my 998 up for the first time after having it overhauled a few years back and I can't get over how smooth it runs. Cheers, Midge
Copper is good, it's harder than the composite gaskets so not as forgiving when the head/block are not perfectly smooth but if the head/block have been skimmed it should work just fine. It does have an advantage that it allows better heat transfer between the head and the block.
Nice work! I'm doing my first ever rebuild on an auto mini. What oil shall I use for an auto mini? I'm getting mixed messages of 20w50 vs 10w40 JASO MA2... What will you be using?
Hi I have a 1998 mpi causing big problems. First thoughts was a overheating problem. Had head skimmed, new rad, expansion bottle and cap and flushed through. Still doing it done a test for gases in water. It went yellow. Copper gasket replaced for a normal one. Re tested and still fluid went yellow!!! The engine is out, and noticed a small hole below the oil dipstick to the right. By any chance 🤞is this normal???
I don't think it's normal. I cant say I've ever seen a small hole there before. It might just be a casting defect. Either way, that low on the engine is not going to leak combustion gasses into the coolant. Was the head pressure tested i.e. for cracks?
Hi thank you replying. A guy at mini spares has said the hole is okay and would be the end of a drill hole for gearbox to block bolt!. I don't think it was pressure tested when the head went back on.
Ah yes, I know what hole you mean now. There is a gearbox bolt that comes up from down below vertically. What you can see is the threaded hole. Sadly it sounds like you could have a cracked head if the head has been skimmed, new gasket and you are still getting combustion gasses in the coolant. It could also be a problem with the block but unlikely. If the head tests OK with a pressure test, then you are looking at a problem with the block (Bad news, but hopefully not). Hopefully you used a Payen BK450 head gasket last time?

Hiya Keith-really enjoy the progress videos. 30 odd years since I took a Mini engine apart. And what an impressive tool you have mate! Stay well.
Great video keith.....the head was done my MJA though, not MAR 🤣👍
Oh LOL 😆 I got 2 letters right, just in the wrong order
Perfection once again. Check check and check again 👍
😎 Thanks
Really coming along nicely now. The big spanner was a great moment too!
Whats your view on the copper head gaskets, for use in a pretty standard 998?
Copper is good, it's harder than the composite gaskets so not as forgiving when the head/block are not perfectly smooth but if the head/block have been skimmed it should work just fine. It does have an advantage that it allows better heat transfer between the head and the block.
@@classicminiworkshop thanks Keith - that’s helpful insight.
Great video, could i ask you where you got the firewall mat from.I can remember you putting in on the last build. Thanks
The bulkhead insulation came from Smiffybits
With that impressive spanner you could work on your car from the other side of the garage.
😁

Definitely not 20W50, I'm going to use 10w40 MA2
@@classicminiworkshop amazing, thank you, and keep up the great work. Your videos have helped me out more than I could ever explain mate! 👍🏼
