Welcome to my Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc Automatic restoration. This project car was bought from e-bay in July 2020 for the sum of £4000. My intentions are to carry out a light restoration and make the car the best it can be while keeping it almost completely original. The end result will be a time warp back to 1984 and the car will look like it has just left the showroom.
This Mini Mayfair is rare in that it has only covered 12,000 miles since new, only 330 miles per year! The shell is almost completely rust-free and has never been welded or had any panels replaced.
In this update, I strip the radiator, respray, and refit

ive used radiator combs on train radiators keith its definitely a thing
Its got know where to go mate once its back together its sandwiched between the housing & that washer. it's been there nearly 40 yrs & never caused a problem id put it back

I purchased a Rothenburger torch last year after struggling for decades with cheap blowlamps - they are so much better. Hotter and more controllable. Makes soldering copper pipes much easier. My radiator cowl didn't seem to be galvanised and was badly pitted. It took ages to clean up and re-paint.

19:55 shhhhh yes i'm here, its only took me a week to watch the video, but, OMG sacrilege. You didn't think this out Keith. You could have made a video of stripping and cleaning the alternator, refitting, secretly finding out it was not charging and replaced it with the new one, shhhhh no one would notice lol. Would have made you look fantastic pmsl

When I was young, dumb and full of ...., I reversed my wheels and fitted arches 😉 also mk1 fiesta disc conversion from the scrappies 👍
I know how to finesse a radiator that's for sure.

That is a mega job on that engine bay and the rad looks brand new.
On radiators especially old gnarly ones people need to be very careful when clearing out the threads on the cowl screw threads. Use a ground off tap because you can cut into the core pipes with the point of the tap and you never know until you see water pouring out of 4 places.
Ask me how I know.
That's a good point! I used new bolts and I thought to myself, if someone used bolts that were a little too long they would hit the core

You can get a fin comb used for aircon and refrigeration units as they have the same problem also condenser coil cleaner is good for cleaning the radiators to if it’s blocked with dust etc

Hiya Keith-hope your well. Great video. Took on a new resident at the nursing home where I work. He is called Dr. Brian Lindley. He was a top guy at Dunlop and met and knew Alec Issigonis and the guy who invented the hydrolastic suspension which I saw Mark taking off his Cooper. Weird or what?

Its the same system on the early MGB's oil filters and the one on mine has lasted since 1968 and all the oil changes since - so around 52 or so (most by my late father in law as he owned it from new..... Telemeic? if ive spelt it right from memory

Thats a good one, I can also remember fitting washers under the front cones to raise the suspension because I couldn't afford new cones and HiLo's

My oil filter canister bolt, it didn’t have that clip, I only used another oil rubber O ring, it just holds everything before you install it, it’s an over engineering item 😂😂

Never lubricate the starter bendix, clean it with petrol and that's it.
Why would you not lubricate the Bendix?
@@classicminiworkshop it becomes sticky just like yours as you showed us. dunk it in petrol and see the difference.
@@joezanella8949 Cheers, joe. I had not given it much thought but I can see the logic of grease being a bit too sticky
@@classicminiworkshop not only grease, oil too, clean it and leave it.
@@joezanella8949 You could use a dry lubricant like graphite (pencil lead). This doesn't go sticky but still reduces friction on the metal surfaces. I used this trick back in 1968 to make my Mum's Austin 1100 start a bit more reliably.
