Classic Mini Head Gasket Change & Cylinder Head Refurb

  • After struggling through a few MOT emissions tests and putting up with a smokey inefficient exhaust, I thought I would change valve guides with ones that wouldn't allow oil to be let through and burned. This video is the raw footage of that work. Taking the head off, stripping and rebuilding the head, then finally putting it back together again. The following day it passed its emissions test with 2.4% CO (Max 3.5) and 24 Hydrocarbons (Max 1200!) whereas previous years it would of failed. Not to mention its much faster and picks up really well.

    Just about the best head strip video I've come across on UA-cam for the Mini! No fluff and long discussions, just right to the point and showing the needed details.
    I'm about to get my first classic mini ('91 Japanese Domestic Market type)...same colours as yours.

    Fantastic, uninterrupted video. The perfect guide. This is genuinely, the best DIY video I've seen on UA-cam and the only one I've watched all the way through. I'm now going to change my head gasket with confidence

    Great video. Using all the different camera angles make it so easy to understand what you are doing. Ta muchly.

    A really nice video. Getting stuck in to the oily bits rather than talking about it. It takes a lot of patience to set up all the different camera angles while trying to work. I think it helps to make one more methodical about the whole job though. Definitely worth it.

      Thank you very much! Yes it was time consuming as well. I did miss a few shots here and there (especially when putting all the ancillary stuff back on) but I tried to make it as clear as possible!

      Thanks Tony. I'm not a mechanic, just self taught alongside friends involved in motorsport over 20 years. I filmed the rebuild of that engine but haven't made the videos. Will do soon.

    My current mini is in fairly good shape body wise, at least by mini standards, but even then I know I'll want to tackle some repairs like this myself one day. Most of the used mini's here in Canada are from 79 and earlier and most are as gone as yours so it's really cool seeing essentially what I'll be doing in a couple years when I can wrangle a used Canadian one being done as a guide almost online.
    The video quality is awesome, can't wait to keep following and seeing the project when it's all done!

    Love your videos Adam , very entertaining , can't wait for you start the body work vids again . One thing I noticed though when you numbered the plug leads up they were back to front , number one cylinder is at the water pump end , which might confuse you if you ever have to do any ignition timing work.

  • @harryphelps
    @harryphelps 6 років тому +5

    Number 4 sparkplug and cylinder etc is at the back of the engine (clutch end), Just saying so you don't confuse yourself!

      Yeah I would recommend it. I did and its great if you like cars and working on them. There is a lot you have to put up with, but its worth it in the long run!

    I'll never seen anyone done such a good head fix on a mini on UA-cam ever!! It's a big help for me who have to do it on mine to. Was the symtom a two-stroke cloud on yours to?

    • @jonathanekman3342
      @jonathanekman3342 7 років тому

      Because mine burns incredibly much oil and I hope it is the valves and not the piston rings...

    • @AdamWhite
      @AdamWhite  7 років тому

      Thank you Jonathan! Yeah it was pretty smokey but only on start up. It would then clear once it was all warmed up. Hence why I changed the valve guides. If it is smokey all of the time that could mean piston rings. Fingers crossed it isn't that!

    Great video! It must've taken ages setting up all those shots and it came out great.
    What was the [glue?] you used on the head gasket? Love the channel, keep it up!

    • @AdamWhite
      @AdamWhite  7 років тому

      Haha yes it did take a while! Its called Wellseal. Its not always used on cylinder heads but its always a safe bet by just putting a thin layer either side of the gasket. It also never fully dries unlike most alternatives, which is a plus!

    • @MiniMattTV
      @MiniMattTV 7 років тому

      Adam White I bet! Ok cool I've had a few HG go between 2-3 so not sure if it would be good to use there or not.

    • @AdamWhite
      @AdamWhite  7 років тому

      Ah yeah. That is a common place. Id advise using the Wellseal. Its done the job well on other cars as well!

      Adam White hi, I uploaded a new mini video today, I'd love it if you would check it out, it's a bit long because I'm not that great at editing! But any comments would be great!

      Hi Matt, just had a watch it was really good! Nice to see its not just me that breaks welders. Its interesting that you use Co2. I use Argon 5 and give really good welds. Price is £60 deposit and like £50 refill so its not terrible! But keep going with the project its looking great! :D

    How long did it take to rnr headgakwt change ? Asuming the head is good just a basic swap of gasket , torque and valve adjustment ?

    Love the videos, Adam. Those pistons look kinda bad though ...

    • @AdamWhite
      @AdamWhite  7 років тому

      Thanks! Yeah, I think its due to the leaky valve guides causing it to run rich (with oil), hence the smoke and build up. No way of cleaning them up where they are without taking them fully out. Im hopeful they'll clean a bit now all those problems I talked about are fixed.

    ceberia dedicarse a otra cosa. es un desastre el trabajo que hizo. no hizo el plano de la tapa- no cambio las guias de valvulas que se nota estatan gastadas. no cambio la junta de tapa... la verdad por que no lo lleva a un mecanico. ni siquiera sabe usar las herramientas. ej. la llave crique no se usa para aflojar(asi se rompe) malisimo..
