How to Modify your classic mini cylinder head ! part 1

  • Here's a walk through guide as to how I modify a classic mini cylinder head, showing tools and processes involved. You can do it too Its basically smoothing out the casting marks and smoothing the direction changes along the ports.
    All 1275 heads can be drilled for the Cooper S 11 stud setup; ie the 2 extra studs at each end of the head, mark from a head gasket and drill accurately using a pillar drill or mill!

    Good job. Yes the rough finish is desirable. Ports polished to a mirror add zero to flow.

    I've just bought an untoched 12G295 cylinder head for my 998 engine, but I'm wondering should I modify it like you've done. Some people just bolt them straight on and skim them for compression reason.

      You could go bigger inlet and ex valves on the standard cast ports an see an increase in flow

    Stuart, any chance of some info on how you made the port polisher (11:06) you said it’s a screw and some felt? I can’t quite work out how you have secured the tape?

    Are the inlet and exhaust port boss quite pronounced. Do they circumvent around the valve stem or just to the right or left of it? Thanks.

      remove them for maximum flow

    Stuart - you don't mention in the video anything about the chamber shape? Do you use a template?

      Hi Bill , this is just a road spec chamber shape using profiled stones, ill do different shapes turbo, race, supercharged etc but all are freehand, after 35 years of doing these i'm on autopilot!

      its ok I think there's a little too much expected of this casting , I searched hi and low for them to use a s big chamber turbo heads but the still broke through inbetween the inlet valves - be careful of this area on them !
