    Bit of advice -
    1) ALWAYS stock your wood up as high as possible inside the house during the winter time. Possibly find an extra spot to store extra wood inside just in case.
    2) keep your outside wood pile completely filled up.
    3) run a rope clothesline etc from your house to where your wood pile is and any other out buildings you use during the winter, just in case of a surprise snowstorm/blizzard etc. Tie little bits of red cloth on it every few feet for visibility. That way you can't get lost between the different areas during any type of snowstorm. It could definitely save your life.
    4) and don't forget to have plenty of drinking water on hand.
    Good luck to you.
    Thanks for sharing with us

The water compartment is also for generating steam, because the fire dries out the air. You should use it, or better yet, keep a full iron steamer or pot on the cook stove, as most people did back in the day. It's vitally important to keep a fire going all Winter. Get a proper wood stove for your house. This is a MUST because your water pipes are freezing. (When thawed from the house warming up, the water flowed. That's what happened.). You absolutely cannot allow your house to freeze - ever. You're going to end up with bursting pipes, a big mess, damage, and an expensive fix for the pipes, water removal, and mold prevention. (Also, on extra cold days, let the faucets drip. This helps the pipes not to freeze from water sitting, and open the cabinet doors under your sinks, to allow the heat to access the pipes under them.) You also need to get more insulation on your water pipes. This needs to be done immediately. Chopping wood is a constant on a homestead, and you need to stock up way more than you have in preparation for Winter. We have 3 coverd piles. One with green wood that's seasoning (tarped), one for storage of dry wood (under the overhang on our barn), and another coverd by the porch, so it's handy when we need it (don't have to walk across the yard). We keep that stocked. Good luck & Take care! ❤️

I personally believe that we all benefit from a bout of roughing it. It brings into focus what the true necessities of life are, and that we can live happily with much less. It also reminds us to be grateful for what we have.
You did well Hannah!!! Went with the flo, thought outside the box, and made do with what you had!!! Atta girl!!!
Having a wood stove, solves many hardship problems, huh?
Gives you heat, hot water, to bathe, wash dishes, wash clothes, etc, ability to cook, dry clothes, what am I forgetting? Bottom line, a woodstove, and a water source, are the most important elements to have!!!

Are you asking what the term "roughing it" means?
It's about going through a period of time without the luxuries that your accustomed to having.
For instance, living without electricity and running water from the tap.....
Its "rough" or "hard" to live without those things that you're accustomed to having, but you CAN find a way to adjust and make do with what you have.
We all can survive with much less than what we're accustomed to having, and many people do live their every day lives with far less than what we have.
Always be grateful for what you have and never take it for granted that you will always have it. Anything can happen at any time, and what would you do if suddenly you somehow lost everything that you have? Would you be able to "rough it" and find a way to survive?? Or would you just say oh woe is me and lay down and fade away? Of course the best option is to find a way to survive. Never take life for granted, and never give up!!!! Its also useful to think ahead and have a back up plan for life's most important necessities. What are those basic necessities that you absolutely need to survive??? And where would you need to go to find them, what would you have to do to obtain them?
"Food for thought"....in case you're wondering what that term means, it means something to think about. 🍃🤔🍃

I keep as much water in milk jugs as my freezers will hold. This serves 3 purposes. 1. Your freezer won't run as much.2. Keeps your food cold during a power outage. 3. If you're on a well, you can thaw it and use it when the power is out.

Loved like that way back in the late 70’s the Shenandoah river froze over for the first time in 90 yrs.we only had a tiny wood stove that needed to be fed constantly. All pipes were frozen and split so no water. The dogs water bowl froze to the kitchen floor! We learned many lessons that winter. Glad you are getting things figured out as you go.
