So from a thrift store buy some old skis. Use the skis and your carpentry skills to make a long wood hauling sled. You will thank yourself for years to come.

Just a few days ago i moved out of my dad’s flat, where i grew up for 22 years, and even if i really like being on my own, i’m not yet fully comfortable with that. Talk to your dad about his first flat 🙂 Bet you learn more than just where it was or how much he paid for rent. This is your first flat. Your first set of keys. It takes time to get comfy lol. It's so cute and wonderful to see how you take care of your mouse! I had a small group of pet mice too at some point and I always worried if I was doing everything right and if I could improve their little lifes even more. I ended up with a huge cage with lots of hiding and climbing spaces and activities for them. I guess the point I'm trying to get to is that I appreciate your thoughtfulness so much and I know your little mouse is going to have so much more fun! I'm happy for all three of you :)

Being alone is really a skill, sometimes a relief, sometimes a burden it is a very real part of life.
I would rather be ok and have some fun on my own than be with people and yet feel alone, sometimes.

very well said. I've been solo traveling and it isn't all it's hyped up to be. the going gets tough when you're alone and having to face the ugly parts of yourself. This is also where I have found the most beautiful traits within myself. Like Hannah said, the world can be in motion and finding those still moments in time is a precious and rare trait.

Hannah, you are such a unique, determined, and self-aware woman and I think, a bit of an old soul :) ..... our society can make someone feel weird if they choose to be alone, especially on holidays. Others can give you a look that says they feel sorry for you! At least that's what I've found. No one else can understand it. Good for you for discovering what alone & quiet can bring. I spend my days with hundreds of people that I'm responsible for so I like being alone I used to be the person who went out every weekend and New Year's Eve excetera and now I enjoy quiet and solitude enjoy my time with my students and the other people I work with but I'm happy to be by myself and just have quiet
You need to put old towels under the back and front tires as far as you can then back it out ,,works like a charm always keep the towels in the back of truck ,or blankets
aww Despereaux and her new friend are so sweet. I spent NYE alone and agree that it seems natural to do that. It struck me how different and yet similar it is to do that at your age and mine (57).
I always think about how you shoot things...like walking out into the dark with a lantern...you have your camera setup on a tripod and then you run back and set it up elsewhere...same as the bathtub, looked like 2 different camera angles. So much work! Anyway, for those who think winter is fun and lovely, as a canadian, let me tell you...the novelty wears off right after xmas lol. Then it's just a huge PITA. Happy New Year, Hannah

Hannah can I make a suggestion, I think you should get a couple of electric heaters that plug in the wall, in case you don't want to use up all your wood..
Another suggestion is to get a battery operated chain saw then you can cut those trees down that have fallen and use them for fire wood..
You definitely need a sled and a wagon..wagon for wood in the summer and sled for winter..
I hope the mice stay friendly and buddies ❤ and no random bloodshed, that would be sad. But they seem to be chill so far!!!
I know exactly how it feels to be sad about trees and thankful for water lol we lost about 15-20 gorgeous trees on our property when hurricane Ian ripped through - it felt like losing friends. We also lost power and water for a week, so I know the joy of hearing that faucet sputter with liquid comfort. Humans are so vulnerable, yet resilient. And that red lip for New Years gave me T Swift vibes ☺️

We use wood here in southern Nova Scotia, I harvest it all from my land, buck it, split it, stack it, dry it, and bring it in one load at a time all winter. It's a vibe.
The cheese was so special I almost cried. Dixie is so cute. Your ending was just so beautiful! I see a Christmas card of you in the soft lighting by the trees out in nature! Love it!
I don't hardly ever envy others, but you my dear are living my dream. Sure, there are your own struggles but you truly are living. Great idea to get Despereaux a companion. Understand the desire and need to take alone time (Introverted myself). Stay true to yourself and things will continue to fall in place. It is amazing how that happens but it does. "Hope you have a good new year" is the wrong salutation. Better is "Looking forward to your great new year". Hope is for wishers, you are a doer.

New years eve is very still for me . I reread all my Christmas cards and greetings. And I make eggrolls in memory of my dad who always made them on new years. And lastly I sit for hours reading the blessings in my years blessing jar.

Just a little FYI whenever its going to be freezing out and your going to be gone turn your water OFF. The other thing when home open the doors below your sinks in your house the ones on your outside walls open the doors so they aren't closed off to your heat in the house even if just ajar. Cleaning the water filter is good but that isn't why your water froze. Make sure to turn off your water when you are gone.

My childhood was odd house, burning firewood, canning, butchering, carrying water, gardening, etc.. I'm so grateful for indoor plumbing, warm heat, water, etc. and everyday I am happy that I will never do without (hopefully) and appreciate luxury.

i just moved up north and lemme tell ya, I REALLY appreciate you showing the downside of the beautiful fluffy snow. because sometimes all that loveliness means not having hot water, a consistently warm house, or being able to shower for days on end, but still having to shovel your car out so you can get warm somewhere else all stinky and miserable

For your basement i would look into closed cell foaming the walls. Help keep heat in, and problem will also help your home be less attractive to mice.

Hannah, when stacking the wood, stack the long board vertically and the bottom of the pile should hold it to support adding wood on the right side so you can stack higher

Good luck with the new mouse. We had some years ago. They got along fine for a year or so. Then I woke up to my daughter screaming. One had eaten the hand and face off of the other one. It was a mini massacre.

Seeing you alone with the light in the middle of snow made me tear up from joy I felt like that's what I would love. I also spent the new year's eve alone for the second time this year, it does feel good, it feels right, like you said, after all the hustle and bustle taking the time for your own thoughts and feelings, starting the new year quiet and content.

Just a thought Hannah, I have learned that it is helpful to have a snowblower and if possible, an ATV. Two very useful items for country living. Very helpful items for country living. Just a thought. Maybe a used ATV as they can be a little pricey, but would help you immensely. You could also get a plow for the ATV and maybe avoid the snow blower.A snow roof rack is also very helpful. Just a thought to help you.

I have an outdoor mouse that I feed. I have been caring for it since it was still a youngin. Now it is full grown. Amazing how fast they grow.

when I stack wood against the wall whether it be a regular wall or wood wall I always use cardboard from a large appliance to put against the wall so as not to damage it

My great grandmother had a outhouse at her log cabin. Her and her husband built it in the early 1900’s. It was a 2 seater. It was cold in the winter and stanky in the summer lol.
