I’m surprised to say that I hadn’t watched this previously. I like your whole, methodical approach in this. Strangely as I look back on it, my process for settling on the Haven myself was mentally similar but not quite so deliberate. I had thought to lift and loft lines off of one of my fiberglass production boats, a Demon 15, and rather accidentally stumbled into the H12. I fell in love with her lines and was then crushed to find out that we couldn’t get the plans or rights to a build, and then, way-lah, the Haven. Unlike you, I took this plunge having not the opportunity to actually sail one. I guess the reputation was enough. Well done Bob, great video!
25 years old from Louisiana. Have a dream of building a small boat for awhile now. Been studying and trying to figure out how to get started. Watched your videos and fell inlove with them. Hopefully I can keep learning and finally start to build a boat.

Another immensely enjoyable and wonderfully informative video . I am just at the stage where I am about to build a boat myself for sailing practice . Personally I very much drawn to the Nordic Folkboat s Form . Having not sailed that much , and having it on my list of things to do before I die, and the fact that I live in a small seaside Town,in the U.K.,I thought this year I would begin . I am not a woodworker ,I am retired now but have been a jeweller for the greater part of my working life . But 20 years ago I owned a Steele Tugboat , which was moored on the Thames and I done a considerable amount of work both structural and Cosmetic on it. So I am not phased by woodworking, I like it , it’s more forgiving😊 Anyway I m digressing on a subject that is complex as it’s irreducibly evaluative and essentially contestable by it’s very nature. The Folkboat is too heavy , it would have to be kept in the water and lifted in the winter months. So I m looking at something with a lifting centreboard that I can without too much difficulty tow by my car, but solid built so I can pull it up on the beach here, which is not sand but pebbles,without damage to the hull ! I figure if I build it and sail it for a couple of years , and I feel at home with sailing , then I will get a motor sailor, and try a trip to the Mediterranean. However already prior to watching this video I had decided on Gaff Rig Tan Sails for the Main , which I will not make myself but order from the sailmakers , something inside just told me these are more manageable single handed. I also want a Genoa sail . So the Cornish people build Clinkers with solid Transoms , these look appealing , but they are usually 14 feet in length , and overly heavy , built with Oak . I m trying to research these and thinking of down scaling one to a Maximum length of 12 foot . They are solid workboats and can be beached , but don’t have centre boards generally but are great little sailboats nonetheless . Let’s see
Going back and watching all of these. I'm still working on my flat bottom / flats setup for fly fishing. I've determined my next is a more traditional, smaller sail boat. Really like this model. thank you for making these

Hey Bob, Thanks for starting this series. I'm a huge fan of both Paul Gartside and Joel White, so no bias there. For me, the choice was catboat vs sloop. Having owned and sailed both, I lean more toward the sloop due to the ability to shorten sail and maintain balance. Downside, of course, is more strings in need of pulling. White was a meticulous designer, gone way too soon. I think you made a very good choice.
Before you can start something, having the correct perspective is essential to being able to start off as you aim to finish. The haven was a clear choice to me also. Great project. Subscribed.

A little late to the party, I just found out about your channel thanks to the lads over at Acorn to Arabella. I'm very excited to watch the progress of your build. I too have been contemplating a small day sailer and considered the very same designs at you. I settled on Tom Cat because I've had a long standing affection for cat boats. Also, it's a slightly smaller boat, so hopefully with require less material, and has a simpler rig, as well. Plus, I really love the little cuddy cabin on Tom Cat. Maybe a Haven 12-1/2 will be my second build? Ironically, I was using my copy of "The Making of Tom Cat" as a table for my lap top while watching this episode! ;)
Looking forward to this build series. Your selection is well thought out and very doable by a single person in a reasonable time period. With the other channels that are building wooden boats and your channel I have finally found the perfect mix of videos to keep me from worrying about anything but boat building. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Excellent episode here Bob. I really appreciated the history lesson and you explaining the process of how you arrived at your decision. Enjoyed seeing the plans and patterns too. And as a fellow sculptor who has built dozens and dozens of maquettes, I agree that models really help you work through problems early on. They are an especially good step in a larger build.

As you went thru your books I looked to my left and all but one was sitting on my end table looking at me. I am fully behind your choices. Truly excited about this series. Only a couple hours away if you care for a little help.
I just discovered you earlier today in your episode were you are discussing your thoughts on your preference for shearline. We sail a Hermann catboat around New Haven CT harbor. I sailed a Beetle cat once which was enough for me for more or less the same reasons as yourself. I just fealty very vulnerable sitting on the floor with my legs out in front of me. I plan to follow each of your episodes.
I'm really interested to learn all I can about how you do that: walk in out of the snowy cold, take off your watchcap and your hair's perfect. There's real art there. 😁
The Haven looks like a fine boat to build; looking forward to the series
You picked the right boat. There are only two others, both cruising boats I would consider. In my case medical needs have eliminated cruising. Maybe I'll build a 121/2 too.

I believe your decision to build Haven is a great choice. I see problems with a caulked hull if not keep in the water. Like the gaff rig and centerboard. It will be quick to launch and recover on the trailer. You must feel she will be a great single handler to sail. I'm in for watching your progress.

I'm awfully late to the party here, definitely going to watch your videos to follow the build. I had a similar evaluation process to select a sailboat to build, I landed on the Melonseed. Also a small gaff rigged boat, but without a jib.

I have also taken the same sailing course at the WBS. I have also sailed all three boats and both the haven and herreshoff sail the same. There is advantages to all three, The beetle cat is really easy to prepare to sail. It also has a huge cockpit where it is easy to lay down and sail the boat on light wind days. The herreshoff has a very clean cockpit (no CB trunk) but not easily trailerable. Both are very nice day sailers, with a self tending jib which makes it a great boat for single handling. I would also have gone with the haven over the beetle cat.
Yes,I would build the HAVEN;I could not sit on the bottom! Not any more! My Dad built his own design of ketch, over 10 years; he named it the PERSEVERANCE! The boat at 7:18 is my view of ideal design; seems elegant and stable.

The Beetle Cat is a beautiful boat. Indeed it is elegant and a very stable vessel. Unfortunately, one does have to sit on the bottom.
Very educational video. Thanks for sharing the processes you used to decide on a boat, and the histories of former shipwrights that influenced your planning direction.
As I am in my second year (2/4) apprenticeship to become a boatbuilder in Germany, I was wondering about the way or much more the direction you number/numerize the frame and mould stations, starting at the bow with 0 and going up on the way aft. Is this method common in North America? I've learned two different methods here in Germany. First is pretty similar, though it starts at the opposite end, beginning with the transom/spiegel, continuing with station 0 (=front end of transom), 1, 2, 3 and so forth. The 2nd method has station 0 at the widest part of the hull, while the station numbers in front increase and the station numbers behind decrease. Do you know these two different methods? Thank you very much for your inspiring videos!!! I admire your broad versatility, well structured working method and your calm voice. It's always easy to understand and follow you. Camera work and editing is well suited for it's purpose. Keep it up 😉
I have seen the different methods of numbering stations. In my experience there is a common thread to boat plans, however there is not a standard. I teach an online boat building clinic each week. When we discuss reading boat plans I tell them that it is sometimes a treasure hunt to find in information you’re looking for.

Thank you for doing this. I've been wanting to build a real sail boat for a long time. Way too old now. I've built a lot of models of sail boats. the biggest was a 5 ft model of the Highlander Sea or the Star all from the plans. Looking forward to your build.

Bob, I’m not sure if you will get this question, however it pertains to the sculpture at Sydney’s Bondi beach, was that in the sculptures by the sea program, if so when and what happens to it? I live in Sydney and would love to see it. I’ve recently become a subscriber after seeing you on the Arabella program and am fascinated and impressed with the quality and consideration of your work, truly inspiring thank you so much for the sharing and explanations in your art, too often artist and I guess richly so hid the back ground detail, I find understanding an artist helps better understand the art and brings it to life, often we find out much after an artist passes on, which is unfortunate as we all have some thing to offer and should share out thoughts and inspiration. Again thank you for sharing yours.

about 8 months back, I purchased Paul Gartside's "RIFF". I had been looking for a long time for a pretty strip plank boat and this for me fills the bill. I have been sailing for 55 odd years, and have built a few yachts during this time, my latest is not a yacht but a Tolman Widebody skiff for fishing and is nearing completion. The Riff will be built after the Tolman is launched because of a lack of space. I used to sail in the harbour at New plymouth in NZ, but now do the race management side there instead, and have moved my sailing up to an estuary north called Waitara, where I sail 303's. Its the kinda place where every thing is casual, and run by a small but dedicated team, and also sailing a mixture of classes. The Riff will fit right in

By the way, I live in Illinois, pretty close to your Elmhurst installation. I plan on driving by over the weekend.
You have a great talent as an educator and you possess incredible skills across many crafts. A rare combination. Now that I have been through your whole series a few times I think this build has been rendered much less daunting than it otherwise would have been. How many physical hours did you eventually put into the build, it seemed to be fast but I'm sure it was not. What is it like in light airs? I expect when it gets going its mass will give it momentum during momentary lulls at the expense of acceleration in gusts but the coast where I live can sometimes be breezy and choppy other times very quiet for many days at a time. Is there any way to improve light air performance? For example, halving the lead ballast and compensating with water ballast. I came across a Chuck Paine variant called the Levant 15 which is said to have a lower wetted surface area because the hull has been very slightly re designed around the keel to remove the deadwood and forefoot, is that something I could think about or is it very unwise to modify the design - I expect you will say "stick to the design". Can you suggest another design that is very much in the spirit of the havens 12 1/2 but shines in lighter airs.

I have enjoyed your videos over the past couple of years. I am beginning a project on a boat that is basically the big brother to the Haven 12-1/2, that being the Joel White Flatfish 20'3". The plans for this boat require lofting unlike the Haven with its provided templates. As I go along, I wonder if you might give me some advice on certain aspects of the build. I am presently in the lofting stage and working on collecting the oak timbers I will use for a lot of the boat. I will be milling them from oaks obtained from my and my parents' land.

I bought an older wooden lightning class sailboat a few years back. The mast is broken in three pieces and the stem piece is damaged. It came on a trailer with dry rotted tires. It needs alot of work and has no title. Im not sure if it was ever registered with the association. I will order a set of plans for an existing hull . I dont plan on racing it I just want to get it back on the water. Once I have finished the restoration I will start learing how to sail it . I will then start my build on a boat I purchased plans for ten years ago. I figure the lightning will give me some experience before I build the larger sailboat. The larger sailboat is a Camden Class Sloop. Its 28'3" on deck and draws 4'3" and is 6'9" wide. First thing is first building a shop to build it in out of the elements. I will be following your build so I can learn as I tackle these two boats. I have built 4 kayaks and a Jon boat. One kayak was a SoF two were plywood and the last one I built was a cedar strip kayak. The Jon boat was built from lumber given to me by a tree service company. It was some kind of pine and had knots through out. I built it 12 years ago and float the streams here in the Missouri Ozarks. Sorry for rambling so long. I have subscribed to you channel. Thanks for this series.

Regarding modeling, I've been working on a floating sculpture design myself. As I work out various details I must have built it in my mind hundreds of times over. I have sketched and refined over and over as I consider different aspects. I still think it'll be worth the time to model before building. I figure it's better to work out the fine points and look for potential problems before risking wasting materials. I'm thinking of doing my modeling with 3d software, though. Thoughts?

I really like the lines and rig and the Haven seems much more adaptable to cruising shallow and coastal areas. I do wonder if a deeper rudder would handle better when heeled over.

The 12 1/2 refers to the length at the water line. From stem to stern it is approximately 17'

I’m still in the “hopefully someday” stage myself. I’d probably go with Somme’s Sound because I think it’d be a bit easier to build, and I’m worried I’d never finish a Haven. I also really like the look of lapstrake boats. Finally, I feel like carvel planked boats need to stay in the water or they’ll leak for a while each time you put them in - but I might be wrong about that.

I wish you all the best in your work. My choice would be Herreshoff but I'm limited with space so it'll probably be the Gartside's cat boat. But, there's also a problem, I don't like the cat boat design, the mast way up front so I'm in the problem. I'm looking for a 12 ft design with mast positioned not so up front as a cat boat, gaff rigged and a traditional carvel planked or clinker. We'll see what will come up. Thanks for a nice videos. One more design question: how do you calculate the location fore and aft of the center board? As you were holding the model I was imagining the sail area and could see a lot of weather helm potentially developing if the center board is not far enough foreward to balance the rig. Hope that makes sense, just sayin'.

I think for a sculptor, or anyone who is a visual/kinesthetic learner, modelling first is crucial. However, anyone who is a logical learner, plans should be sufficient. I'd be scared to meet the sculptor who could knock out a David without a maquette.
My wife majored in studio art before becoming a doctor. I wonder what kinds of things she could make and design if she were to start woodworking.

Can you sit up in the cockpit or are your legs sticking out? Can you stand up? I would appriciate if you could tell me what height the benches are above the floor. Thank you. The 12 1/2 can fit 4-5 adults comfortably with plenty of leg room. Yes you could stand up not a great idea while sailing. the seats are normal height around 18". Thanks for subscribing!
This looks great Bob. However the American book by Paul Gartside cost between 250 and 800$. Where can I fint and pay for that book on a reasonable price. I also have to pay for transport and more as I am a Danish boat builder.

I have Personally been enamored with the idea of a catboat but not in a day sailor size but with the costal cruzing and even a blue water application in mind...but that was when I wore a younger man's clothes...I still like boats but they have now become pipe dreams
my question is how many hours did it take to build the bluejacket model?
Greg Mckinley ,I think around 15-20 hours. However, I have built many models and I didn’t add all the rigging details as my goal was a reference tool not a model to be displayed. I think it would take around 40 hour for display quality. Happy modeling!

I am wondering why you were more interested in carvel vs lapstrake construction. You didn't go into your reasoning on that.
I was very interested in learning about carvel planking. The last boat I built has a lapstrake hull. I tend to be more interested in projects that are a challenge and present an opportunity to learn.

Could you provide a link to the plans for the haven please?
Try contacting the company. Best to buy plans then build a boat, be sued and find you can't share it with anyone as there would be no way to get insurance for it. Boats are expensive, getting the proper plans isn't a drop in the bilge. And it ensures new designers will enter the field and old designers are compensated. Or get a pad of paper and draw your own.

Yes Building a model first is the way to go to fully digest the details of the plans - but wait - you didn't build a model from the plans, you assembled a kit. Quite a bit different by far.
The link for plans and dreams didnt work for me so I looked it up on Amazon. WOW, $835 US for a book of plans? (Plans and dreams) This "hobby" is well out of my reach. Guess I'll just have to live this dream through other's UA-cam channels. Build on, sir, I'll dream of building whilst I'm watching your build.

Thanks for the notice. I have the ads turned off. It has to be done video by video. This video was published before my channel was monetize. I will go back and make sure there aren’t any mid roll ads.

In the third world, large boats are built without models or plans. It's all just in their head. Not that I'm recommending that.
