He broke a leg in this game. Thanks to Jimmy Johnson, LoL. Oklahoma wins a national championship with a true freshman quarterback. And then Aikman transfers to UCLA. You just can't make this stuff up. 😂
@@dwightlove3704 Testaverde is or was really really good. That is the thing about Miami back in the day. They never had problems getting a quarterback.
Totally agree and the 90s were great as well. Today they throw kids out of the game for making a good play, so now everyone tries to arm tackle and you've got rugby scrums every other play. One side pushes one way, the other pushes the other and it just looks ridiculous. Barely watchable for me anymore.
SteelBuck, you are singlehandedly seeing me through this quarantine. This was a huge game that had national title implications. Miami had Oklahoma’s number from 1985-1987. I can't believe OU was running the wishbone with him. I had forgotten about that. How many of these Miami guys played in the NFL, and you know their names?
Switzer had signed Aikman and TE Keith Jackson and was planning to move more to the I formation to utilize Aikmans cannon arm. If RB Marcus Dupree had stayed at OU this would have been his Sr year.
@@lesscash4stuff Ironic isn't it? He was going to change the offense for Aikman, I remember the buzz about it. Aikman gets hurt, back to the wishbone, national championship. Aikman ends up in the Hall of Fame with three Super Bowls. All's well that ends well.
1985: 11-1 National Champions (loss to Miami early in the season but still beat Penn State for national championship) 1986: 11-1 Orange Bowl winner (lost to Miami early in season so Penn State played Miami for national championship, Penn State won). 1987: 11-1 Orange Bowl (lost to Miami in the Orange Bowl for the national championship) Oklahoma went 33-3 from 1985-87. All three losses to Miami. Could've won the 1985, 1986, 1987 national championship.....but for Miami.
Aikman was throwing some dimes. The pass to Keith Jackson was a thing of beauty. Oklahoma was far less one dimensional with Aikman as their quarterback. Just imagine if he had never gotten hurt.
It's closer ballgame if Aikman doesn't get hurt from viewing these highlights. Aikman is able to make throws down field that Jamele Holieway couldn't make. They're down 20 at one point and still running the wishbone taking 7 precious minutes off the clock before a scoring that last touchdown. That's not happening if Aikman's under center.
@@genghiskhan7041 I think he meant that OU might have won this game against Miami if Aikman had not been injured. And I think that's correct. I'm not even sure if OU still would have won the national like they did, but I do believe they might have won the game against Miami.
Vinny Testaverde won the heisman trophy, Troy Akeman finished 2nd behind Barry Sanders. Akeman won 3 superbowls and is a Hall of Famer Testaverde was a journeyman in the NFL. Life sure is funny.
Back then Owen field had a very pronounced centerline crown, if you were running towards the sideline you were going downhill. This is evident in some of the camera shots, the yardage lines look bent, the center of the field is dryer & therefore lighter in color.
Originally OU was to open the season against SMU on September 14, but ABC promised OU and SMU a national telecast if they could move the game to December 7. That is why the 1985 season started at such a late date for the Sooners.
I was in college at the time of this game. I got tickets and went to the game. This was my first time attending an OU game. I have since attended dozens of home games. To this day, this is the only OU home game I have attended that OU lost.
Troy Aikman running the wishbone for Oklahoma was very sluggish. Against Miami Troy was very good because of the balance of play calling. Ironically Troy was the best chance to beat Miami with his incredible arm. Jamelle & Charles Thompson was not successful trying to beat Miami. The wishbone is a great offense if your players are far superior than your opponent. Miami was able to match Oklahoma talent wise and stiffened with Stubbs & the rest of Miami defense. OU left many points off the board by blocks & misses in this game. Tony Casillas & Spencer Tillman were injured but a huge part of the talent for OU. Jimmy Johnson finally got the talent he didn’t have at OSU. Miami was a pure marriage with his Pro Style offense with Testaverde, Blades & Irvin a freshman on the wideouts. Miami just crushed at least 2 more National Titles for Oklahoma in the mid 80’s. With the same feelings Oklahoma crushed many Florida State dreams in the late 70’s. Sometimes your the hammer & sometimes the nail. The player that gets missed against Miami is the QB Eric Mitchell. Mitchell had the speed & power to change the complexion against a Miami team. If Eric Mitchell stayed at QB when Holieway got his knee injured Switzer might have been able to keep coaching along side Osborne.
Much of what you say is true, but the end of it is wrong. It makes it sound like Switzer's career at OU ended because of games won and lost. That is not why Switzer was forced to resign at OU. It had nothing to do with winning games or losing games. He was forced to resign due to a scandal which included criminal proceedings against several OU players. Charles Thompson selling drugs was one incident. Bernard Hall and Nigel Clay were charged with rape. Also, another player (Jerry Parks) was accused of shooting teammate Zarak Peters. These three incidents were the reason OU interim president David Swank forced Switzer to resign.
Ironically, Aikman played for and won Super Bowls with both coaches in this game - Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer!
what is ironic about it?
