I was nine years old and got to go to this game with one of the graduate assistants sons. Sat in the coaches box for most of it. Seriously, one of the loudest games I've ever been to.
Can’t imagine Keith Jackson calling anything but football. The guy was born with the football voice. I wonder if his elementary teachers noticed haha. He and Pat Summerall were the perfect voices for the sport.
We were very fortunate to win this game. Nebraska was a very good football team. Bigger, faster, stronger, quicker and had a better game plan. Thankfully Sooner Magic came through.
SteelBuck, you’re the man! God I miss this rivalry, teams running the triple option (other than the service academies), horse collars, late hits out of bounds, and NO official reviews!
Keith Jackson was a freaking beast and was instrumental in 2 victories over Nebraska during his time at OU. He is probably the greatest TE in OU history. Just think what he could have done with QB’s that could have actually passed the ball. He would be a superstar in today’s OU offense. OU should not have won this game. We were stuffed all day by a great NU defense. A lot of it was Jackson’s heroics, and a great defensive effort. I think Switzer was 12-4 vs Tom Osborne. Great rivalry that swung back and forth through the years. Once Nebraska left the Big12, they seemed to lose an edge in recruiting. It really set their program back. OU has owned the conference, and has consistently been a top 4-5 program for 20 yrs. I think if NU would’ve stayed in the Big 12, they would still be up there too.
just remember he was recruited to catch passes from troy aikman! go and watch the ou/miami game of 85. aikman throwing to jackson was going to be the norm and he broke his leg!
I would argue some of his success was that pass was made when no one expected it. OU would be pounding out of the wishbone and Jackson would just slip behind the D. Man, remember this game....what a heart breaker. So much shoulda coulda woulda. These were some hard hittin games man.
Great times for both programs. Nebraska outplayed OU for 3 quarters. Keith Jackson killed Nebraska in 85 & 86. He was the difference in both games & also against Penn State in the Orange Bowl. O loved Nebraskas offense though. Dana Brinson should have been more in the game plan for Nebraska. Definitely the fastest player on the field. The hit between David Vickers & Keith Jones was one of the most vicious collisions in the game. Special times & memories for alot families in the mid & late 80’s.
And regional rivalries are killed off because of super conferences and money. Now we get Rutgers vs. Nebraska and we'll have Mississippi State vs. OU. Yawn.
@@steelbuck6777 I am a B I G Oklahoma fan could you bring out 1974 Oklahoma vs Nebraska or 1980 Oklahoma vs Texas or 1980 Oklahoma vs Nebraska...... any of them would be much appreciated thanks
there are three games that stand out in this series for their kill or be killed mentality! now, this is just my opinion! the 78 game the blackshirts were bringing it that game. this game in 86 was a brawl on the field from start to finish and the 87 game was the same way, it was a fight from start to finish! there are few that measure up to these three games. i have to add as an ou fan the black shirts of today are not the black shirts of yesterday! even switzer admits that! these nebraska black shirts would flat out knock your head off! same on ou's side.
This was the time when Nebraska was the shit even when they lost. The state damn near stood still everytime they played their bitter, bitter rival Oklahoma. Because that game was the game back then, fact.🏈☝️😉
I read somewhere that in Osborne's offense, the give to the fullback on an option play was never a "read" though it was designed, practiced and executed to look like it. He wasn't comfortable with the risk, so anytime the fullback got the ball it was a called play and not the QB reading a defender and making a decision to give or pull.
Mostly traps and belly. Guessing the times it wasn’t blocked that way they were running the veer with an automatic give call once they saw what defense ends were doing. Very good point though. I don’t think Nebraska ran the triple option even though it looked like it
The OU center is an absolute monster. Credit to the Sooners for the comeback win, but Nebraska shot themselves in the foot SO many times in this game. Good luck to the Land Thieves this coming season, except when we go down to Norman...
@@ziggie7676 There is a good reason for that as a Husker fan! Full credit to the Sooners for continuing to exploit the Husker's propensity to not finish those games.
This looked just like a Scott Frost Era loss. Just need a couple first downs on offense or a stop on defense and you win the game. NOPE. Can't do either.
Imagine if Michael Vick would have played for OU they would have been undefeated for years don't get wrong Holieway was a great wishbone QB but Vick was way much faster with a stronger arm WOW they would have had a whipstick
They could make it a non-conference rivalry and play the last game of the season. It wouldn't be much of a rivalry right now though since Nebraska isn't very good anymore. It would probably be about what the Ohio State- Michigan rivalry has turned into.
I always enjoyed the Nebraska-Oklahoma games back in the 80's because I knew one of them was going to lose. Check out Jamelle Holieway's QB stats for the whole year at 2:20.
LOL! Holieway was recruited to run the wishbone (which he did with amazing aplomb) not to light up the air passing the ball. That's why he only average throwing the ball a little over 4 times a game! Back then, the wishbone was one of the most difficult offenses in college football to stop - especially if it was run by a QB magician like Holieway. 😊
watching their old games. You're right. They fumbled a lot. They recovered a lot of their own fumbles most of the time. No other player had more face masks against him than Jamelle Holliway as well. Guys were always grabbing his face mask.
This game, probably more than any other, exemplifies why Osborne can never be considered great. Remember, when it mattered, most of the time, Osborn didn't. Less than 4 minutes to go, leading OU 17-10, Osborne: *** cant stop OU, and OU drives 94 yds for a score, and then *** can't get a 1st down that would have ensured at least a tie, and then *** can't stop OU, and OU drives another 55 yds to kick the game winner. Has to be the worst 4 mins (out of 3060) of Osborne's battles with Switzer. Switzer let Osborne believe that Neb was really in the game. What a joke of a coach, Osborne was.
