It's all about what you are used to. I live in Georgia, I had a cousin from Chicago come down for a visit mid winter. I was bundled up for the cold, he considered it a great mild day as he walked around in shorts and short sleeved shirt. He was obviously more used to the cold of Chicago, and it reminded me of why I won't go visit in anything but mid summer.
THANK YOU!!! FINALLY!! A diesel HD off-road test. PLEASE-PLEASE do more of these!!! Maybe a 2017 F250 (6.7L) up gold mine hill or truth/dare. If you do test a stock Super Duty, at least get one with the Goodyear Kevlar and not the all season tires. I love what you guys do!!!
bogey19018 I don’t think you can fit a bigger tire without rubbing than the one that is on there either. The problem is that the GM trucks have the square wheel wells which affects the tires size and wide ness of wheels
You dont want big wide tires anyways especially in the snowy areas. Freaking dodges up here are constantly getting stuck because of those wide ass 20/22in wheels and tires. Meanwhile they are being pulled out by old ford and chevy trucks with tall skiny tires that are in some cases almost bald. A god 285/75/16 or 17 is a perfect tire size
derek leverknight No. He means you can't get a wide grippy footprint by getting the psi down and having the tire rubber bulge out. There should never be a wheel bigger than 17 inches on a real offroad truck.
Loved the video and it's a sweet truck. Just don't understand why companies who put out off road packages won't throw on bigger tires. Great job fellas.
Yeah the stupid emissions systems are a pain and cause so many problems. I have to take my 2017 colorado diesel in for a recall for a emission sensor. Hope this isn't a sign of more things.
Glad y’all did this video! I am now 100% sure I am not going to buy a GM product due to the DEF TANK and small ass tires. I going with a Titan Pro 4X and adding the aftermarket 50 gallon fuel tank.
Dura Trac's have seriously been the BEST TIRE out there for several years now and continue to hold that crown. For an aggressive all terrain, this is the best option.
That def tank could have been better designed. It's a joke an I'm a Gm guy. With that said these r probably the best looking heavy duty trucks on the road. GMC RULES
E55 BaeMG - he means that lights on a headache rack back there don't really provide much in the way of "functional" driving light because they are up so high and behind the entire cab.
“Off Road” and “Rancho shocks” don’t go together. Rancho shocks are absolute garbage. I know from experience. Bilstein and FOX make far superior products.
Just got some bilstein 5100s on my 01 tundra coming for the OEM shocks that came with the truck 17 years ago. Night and day difference, along with 33 bfgs for fun
A few things 1) This truck is nothing more than an appearance package 2) Roman saying that he'd prefer 20" wheels on an off-roader tells me that he knows nothing about off roading. Nathan was correct in saying he'd want a tire with a taller side wall. 3) Nathan should have been driving. He seems to know a lot more about off-roading than Roman and from the videos I've seen he's the more competent off-road driver as well.
I have a Canyon All Terrain and I think it’s a piece of garbage. I leased it and got a good deal but I can’t believe somebody would pay 37k for this truck especially with the lazy gasoline engine😣.
Thank you for a great review and thanks to Kelly for putting this monster out there for review. I’ve been critical in re MY perceived Mopar/Ford bias but this.was an even handed review of an (for me) unaffordable truck. Come on Mopar, give us a diesel Power Wagon!
I've got to ask - at ?? 50K do you still have enough left over to stash in your retirement? I mean seems like a luxury item for deep pockets. I can't justify it even though I love this truck.
Decent credit a few grand down and a job is all you need. In have a 2017 tundra same price as this truck I'm not well off but it can be done comfortably.
I own a dealership and middle class people depending where they live are really stretched out.. $500,000 to $1,000,000 for a average 4 bedroom house ,nothing fancy an old 15 year old home..Not a mansion ,average small lot..In some areas this is a $100,000 or so house, but then generally you have lower incomes in those area's,its tough.. So,dont call people lazy, they can work 10 hours per day, working hard and just make ends meet..I see this when I do financing for people..They work hard,do everything right..But its tough... In my job it taught me not to judge people...People you think are lazy because they dont own a brand new vehicle are in many cases very hard working people...I say this as I am going for a drive min my Hellcat Challenger lol,but I see people with health care bills etc that make good money..Dont Judge..
Would love to see a episode that you guys feature how it compares to the other big two diesels (dodge and ford ) also with the go pro on the rear end point it up a bit more so we can see how the rear end adjusts over the different terrain, overall love the videos and have almost watched them all!
Agreed. So many naysayers that the GM diesel can not go off-road and that the DEF tank hangs down too low. I've yet to see a video of one of these being damaged...and I constantly research these trucks.
Most people dont take 50,000 plus dollar trucks off road, and if they do it is through a little mud hole to get it dirty to make them look like they go 4 wheeling, the tank hangs low on them and it looks like shit, also being so low it is more prone to getting damaged, try going over some rocks off road and show me that the DEF tank will survive
Roy Giller, I believe on the RAM cab & chassis (3500/4500/5500) have the DEF tank underneath the driver door. You can see the tank is lower than the rocker panel. Has a skid plate.
I think something needs to be cleared up. This truck has an offroad appearence package not an offroad package. I believe this truck was offered for a specific look without conprimising it’s intended function. Making these HD trucks more offroad worthy only makes them less useful for towing and hauling. Case and point: the raptor, power wagon, and ZR2 are all better offroad than their platform counterparts, but they all have lower tow rating. If you want to go offroad with a factory truck, buy a Ford Raptor, Ram Power Wagon or, Chevy ZR2 not a HD diesel. If you need to tow more, buy the HD diesel and skip offroaders. Bottom line is a truck is a tool and should buy the one that you will get the most use out of.
You guys are awesome. Love to watch your videos. I am not brand prejudice, I do prefer my Ford's. But that is a heck of a good-looking truck. And it looks like it did a great job.
Im glad GM finally move the DEF tank on their 2020 HD trucks. Having it hang down there on the passanger side you almost had to have steps to hide it. And also cant really take it off road cuz might scrap and puncture it
How do the lights on the sport bar work? I have the sport bar on my Silverado and added my own lights and was curious as to how they work from the factory
I personally believe that the new Ford Super Duty is the most capable off road diesel pickup truck in this class. It has much more ground clearance all around and has a solid front axle. Now with that being said, I am not trying to start an argument in the comments about what brand is better. I have owned a ford tuck, and now I own a Chevy truck. So please everyone just take in to consideration of what I am saying. Thank you and wonderful video as always, I am a huge fan of you guys and have been watching for so many years!!! Thank you.
Aaron French solid axles arent really that much more capable than an ifs setup just cheaper to lift lol the mid 90s gm heavy 2500 and 3500 did everything the solid axle trucks did with a better ride quality for many years
Cool effect with the snow bouncing off the black hood. A couple of comments here - what is the drive configuration? Locking rear - locking front? Any crawl control or stability control features. And what is the cost for this beauty? Fun video - thanks guys!
I think the point of this video is to say this truck is good at more than just towing. U can go offroad get groceries see much better at night be comfortable and look good doing it. And as for me i will continue to wish i could afford to have it.lol
The lights on the "sports bar" seem useless? Looks like they're pointed upward, and if you aim them down.... the roof will absorb most of the light output...
All it needs is a small lift and some taller wider tires and it would do perfect. Obviously the truck came straight off the lot and they aren't going to go crazy on off road upgrades at the dealership on a truck most people would only use on road for hauling and whatnot.
Ok thanks a beautiful truck! Runs great has a wonderful Powertrain, for towing only! But I’m not sold on the diesel in Off Road areas, the extra tq does not make up for the heavy weight added! I believe if GM want a better off road package, along with a better gas engine they need to step up their game. Even though there is nothing wrong with the 6.0, the competition has left it behind on paper, in the real world it does seem to hold its own, but is still down on power. So they need to rework the 6.2, or the 7.0 engines, bring them out in Graphite Iron, along with a difference in the state of tune, for better low end. Bring the Air Intake Scooped hood to the gas line to help with the under hood cooling, along with other cooling upgrades! Plus the hood scoop would have an effect on high speed power! They could loose hundreds of pounds, then end up with more competitive power. I bet they could bring in a 6.2 with at least 420 hp and 450 lbs ft tq! It go all the way with a 7.0 and bring more power! Like at least 440 hp and 480 lbs ft tq! Then add at least 1-2” height with suspension upgrades with more travel, plus tires with an aspect ratio in the 70’s ! Is all they would need!! Use the needed hardware, loose the unnecessary bells and electronic gizmos and get the price point down to the WT/LT level! With the added options for those who want to pay for them! WINNER!!!
Jesse Hernandez oh yea I realize that Jesse, that’s why I added for ten to retune for lower end power! Just like the 6.4 Hemi in the Power Wagon makes less power than the 6.4 in the SRT Vehicles! It’s tuned for more low end power, that works better in trucks!
They really need to fix the def tank and hide it up in the frame somewhere. And yes, bigger tires. There is plenty of clearance for bigger tires without a lift.
Why didn't they put front lockers on this truck???? Ugg... GM, you are really stepping up your game lately IMO. Stop skimping where you need it most. The GMC is your flagship. Make it count.
Would still choose a raptor or power wagon before even looking at one of these my 94 F150 on 31x10.5 a/t tires could of crawled dare without a problem gm did a off road package and still killed the ground clearance with the def tank instead of relocating it to compensate for the lack of clearance it already has
Have you heard any rumors about GM relocating or redesigning that DEF tank. That tank the way it is, is enough reason to never let the truck leave the road out of fear of something stupid and unnecessary happening. I'm interested in buying a diesel GM truck but not with that tank the way it is.
I'm looking forward to the snow videos. I've never actually been to Colorado, but I want to visit really bad. I know the Denver/Boulder area gets some snow, fairly cold winters and pretty hot summers. Are there any bugs that become a problem in the summer, like mosquitoes, ticks, etc?
You should ask to test a ram 2500 Cummins with the off road package. I bet it would way outdo the GMC. Even without a front locker or swaybar disconnect like the powerwagon.
My GM Duramax truck is superb for towing, makes an excellent farm truck, gets the jobs done that I need to take care of the acreage. But no, it’s not a rock crawler. That DEF tank is a major problem for clearance, and GM can’t seem to get proper sidewalls on truck tires to save their lives. Too many suburbanites with blingy 20” wheels. Anyway, what size are those on the “All Terrain X”? The guys said 18”, but what aspect ratio?... My 2011 Silverado has stock 18” wheels, and the Duratracs I have look to have a bit more meat on them. Anyway... nice truck for many purposes and glad to see the stupid airdam was deleted. But no, a big diesel is for towing and farm & ranch duty. It needs enough offroad capability to get work done. Leave rock crawling to the Jeeps and other smaller/lighter rigs designed for that purpose.
Dodge RAM needs to put a Diesel in the Power Wagon and Rebel for those who want it... I Love the HEMI V-8 and it has higher revving to get out of a mess in some situations, where a diesel cant rev quick enough so it gets stuck..!
I really like how TFL uses the same hill to benchmark everything. Good consistency.
Not quite as extreme as the Power Wagon but that truck is still a beast. It’s more than capable of doing anything 99% of owners will ever need
Sierra Vortec that 6.6 diesel with Allison transmission is a killer combo. Seriously bad ass truck
“Big rock would tear that DEF tank off”
It would be doing you a favor Roman LOL
😂😂👌 Tru
Roman wearing a coat and winter hat and Nathan in short sleeves 😅
It's all about what you are used to. I live in Georgia, I had a cousin from Chicago come down for a visit mid winter. I was bundled up for the cold, he considered it a great mild day as he walked around in shorts and short sleeved shirt. He was obviously more used to the cold of Chicago, and it reminded me of why I won't go visit in anything but mid summer.
This is one hell of a video. I was really scared when Andre yelled STOP, but thank god no one got hurt and the truck wasn't damaged.
I think the most offroad ready diesel would be the diesel zr2
THANK YOU!!! FINALLY!! A diesel HD off-road test. PLEASE-PLEASE do more of these!!! Maybe a 2017 F250 (6.7L) up gold mine hill or truth/dare. If you do test a stock Super Duty, at least get one with the Goodyear Kevlar and not the all season tires. I love what you guys do!!!
Bigger rims = less rubber. NOT GOOD!
bogey19018 I don’t think you can fit a bigger tire without rubbing than the one that is on there either. The problem is that the GM trucks have the square wheel wells which affects the tires size and wide ness of wheels

derek leverknight No. He means you can't get a wide grippy footprint by getting the psi down and having the tire rubber bulge out. There should never be a wheel bigger than 17 inches on a real offroad truck.
If you haven’t noticed Roman doesn’t know much about anything automotive
Nathan ain't no rocket (truck) guru either.
The G80 rear end is very intuitive. It’s one of the best “factory” design locking rear differential. AAM makes awesome diffs.
Loved the video and it's a sweet truck. Just don't understand why companies who put out off road packages won't throw on bigger tires. Great job fellas.
Robert John there are certain tire requirements that have to be met by manufacturers for them to be oem tires.
And mpg on the papers
Great seeing the full size rig on the cliffhanger!!
1st time a $70 some thousand dollar truck went up that hill...
“Yep. Comes in here and goes into there.” Meanwhile, Nathan is thinking ground clearance sucks and it’s not a power wagon.
Wish these diesels weren't so expensive and complex to fix.
Yeah the stupid emissions systems are a pain and cause so many problems. I have to take my 2017 colorado diesel in for a recall for a emission sensor. Hope this isn't a sign of more things.
First thing to do with these new diesel trucks is a full delete. Get rid of the garbage emissions.
AGM_1LE absolutely!
leadnsteel time to delete that mini D-Max
Yeah deleting is all good until you have to do an e test in 7 years, then you're screwed, by then they will be checking to see if all that shit works
Glad y’all did this video! I am now 100% sure I am not going to buy a GM product due to the DEF TANK and small ass tires. I going with a Titan Pro 4X and adding the aftermarket 50 gallon fuel tank.
I have the same truck! I love it and I get a lot of complements on the truck. I tow our 10,000lb boat. Love the POWER!!
Never been much of a General Motors guy, but that truck is nice, would love to own one
GMC RULES
Thanks guys!.
i want to see how those lights do in the night
E55 BæMG they light the tree up and nothing else
Gmon3y 142 they look brighter than the ones available same size aftermarket
E55 BaeMG - he means that lights on a headache rack back there don't really provide much in the way of
"functional" driving light because they are up so high and behind the entire cab.
TFLnow ooo yeaa
E55 BæMG They're great if you don't want to see anything within 30 feet of the front of your truck. I.e; useless. Especially for off-roading.
4:44 I’m dying that face
“Off Road” and “Rancho shocks” don’t go together. Rancho shocks are absolute garbage. I know from experience. Bilstein and FOX make far superior products.
splewy I put bilstein 5100s on my 2500 and I love them.
Thank You!! I saw the rancho shock and shook my head
Just got some bilstein 5100s on my 01 tundra coming for the OEM shocks that came with the truck 17 years ago. Night and day difference, along with 33 bfgs for fun
Can’t go wrong with bilsteins. Have two trucks in past with HDs and current with 5100s
Agreed. Had Rancho before terrible. I went with pro comp pro runner for my 09 tacoma tho.
A few things
1) This truck is nothing more than an appearance package
2) Roman saying that he'd prefer 20" wheels on an off-roader tells me that he knows nothing about off roading. Nathan was correct in saying he'd want a tire with a taller side wall.

I feel like that would be the better choice because it's smaller.
I have a Canyon All Terrain and I think it’s a piece of garbage. I leased it and got a good deal but I can’t believe somebody would pay 37k for this truck especially with the lazy gasoline engine😣.
I wanna take my Power Wagon on 37s up this cliffhanger!!
IWrocker I don’t even think it would be fun for us...
I would like to try it as well but change out my wheels
I’d like to see that... road trip time.
I'd put 38s on the GMC and beat your Power Wagon to rubble.
IWrocker power wagons are garbage just like every other fiat
Thank you for a great review and thanks to Kelly for putting this monster out there for review. I’ve been critical in re MY perceived Mopar/Ford bias but this.was an even handed review of an (for me) unaffordable truck. Come on Mopar, give us a diesel Power Wagon!
If I won the lottery that would be my truck right now.
So I have the non HD version of this truck and it’s not a bad buy. The 8spd tranny is kinda odd from time to time
sheldon blankenship For most middle class people like me it is.

After seeing this I now understand why Nathan is a Power wagon fan!
iVlog #Mopar
If you can you guy's should try taking it to Moab and see how it climbs over there.
Somehow I don't think that this truck was designed with Moab in mind. Not really a rock crawler.
There would only be one way to find out.
These guys are too timid for the Moab... :)
SILVERADO THE KING OF TRUCKS not the king of trucks the f*** are you smoking
Great video. I’d like to see some more cross axle tests.
Can someone send me a link for a video of the DEF tank on a GM diesel being damaged due to ground clearance? I can't seem to find one.
truckguyjoe that's a good thing
Agreed. So many naysayers that the GM diesel can not go off-road and that the DEF tank hangs down too low. I've yet to see a video of one of these being damaged...and I constantly research these trucks.
truckguyjoe Do the other truck manufacturers from Ford and Ram, for example, have the DEF tanks in the same location on their trucks like GM does?
4:03 No, Roman, smaller wheels for off-roading.
Nathan corrected him right after.
You guys are awesome. Love to watch your videos. I am not brand prejudice, I do prefer my Ford's. But that is a heck of a good-looking truck. And it looks like it did a great job.
Why bigger wheels?? Makes zero sense. 17's and 18's are perfect for the exact reason the bald dude mentioned
Im glad GM finally move the DEF tank on their 2020 HD trucks. Having it hang down there on the passanger side you almost had to have steps to hide it. And also cant really take it off road cuz might scrap and puncture it
Another good video guys....keep it up!
It's a thing of beauty and tires are not an issue. If you have 70k for the truck you can spare a few more for off road tires.
Love the video, thanks for the quality content
What do you guys think about unimog axels on a truck like the Power Wagon. Any pros or cons about it?
How do the lights on the sport bar work? I have the sport bar on my Silverado and added my own lights and was curious as to how they work from the factory
I love the sound of that diesel. Hopefully epa doesnt kill diesel engines
Great lookin truck GM👍🇺🇸
i have a 2017 ram 2500 cummins off road pkg took it all threw moab no issues was a beast.
I personally believe that the new Ford Super Duty is the most capable off road diesel pickup truck in this class. It has much more ground clearance all around and has a solid front axle. So please everyone just take in to consideration of what I am saying. Thank you and wonderful video as always, I am a huge fan of you guys and have been watching for so many years!!! Thank you.
Aaron French solid axles arent really that much more capable than an ifs setup just cheaper to lift lol the mid 90s gm heavy 2500 and 3500 did everything the solid axle trucks did with a better ride quality for many years
Well done, guys!
Cool effect with the snow bouncing off the black hood. A couple of comments here - what is the drive configuration? Locking rear - locking front? Any crawl control or stability control features. And what is the cost for this beauty?
Fun video - thanks guys!
Have you tried the f250 fx4 for comparison?
Was the hoodscoop standard or an add on?
I think the point of this video is to say this truck is good at more than just towing. U can go offroad get groceries see much better at night be comfortable and look good doing it. And as for me i will continue to wish i could afford to have it.lol
Amazing, a real factory working hood scoop, love it. Too low to the ground though.
If the Heavy Duty model is struggling with ground clearance, then what model should you buy for modest off-roading trips?!!
If I had the money, I'd definitely buy this truck. Looks gorgeous! However, I would add lift and larger Goodyear Wrangler tires.
I agree with the others below, definitely a mall crawler package! But a nice looking one at that
Nathanael Wertz yup. Looks like its ready for some speed bumps.
The lights on the "sports bar" seem useless? Looks like they're pointed upward, and if you aim them down.... the roof will absorb most of the light output...
That looks stunning!
What other off road HD diesels are out there?
Also, dumb question, how do y’all get back down? Same trail or different route.
Nice 5" lift and some bigger tires with the legendary 6.0. That be a bad ass truck!
Great channel!! Great test.
can you try that package with the 6.0???
very nice truck, doesnt even look like an HD, looks like an avalanche with that light bar
StoneysWorkshop That’s exactly why I don’t like it. I think the rack is easy to take off though.
@@joshuarodrique2096 Super easy to take off.
Bigger rims would make it look tacky , bigger tires would be nice though and a lift 🤘
where is the 2.0, what trail is this please
amazing test, amazing video as always. Thanx
man it was so nervous watching the pumpkin barely miss those rocks!!!
It's not a killer off-roader, but I love the look of this. I'd take this over a Denali any day.
Roman needs Jayne Cobb's hat! :D I agree with Nathan, bigger TIRES, not bigger wheels!
All it needs is a small lift and some taller wider tires and it would do perfect. Obviously the truck came straight off the lot and they aren't going to go crazy on off road upgrades at the dealership on a truck most people would only use on road for hauling and whatnot.
Why can I not find NO terrain x truck for sale ... ?!???
You Guys have to check out the GMC Rocky Ridge Edition SUPERCHARGED!
K. R. V. The 6.2 in the 1500s already make 420hp and 460ft-lbs
There is plenty of clearance for bigger tires without a lift.
there no way i would spend 70000 $ for a truck then take it off road. but i love u for doing it lol
Why didn't they put front lockers on this truck???? Ugg... GM, you are really stepping up your game lately IMO. Stop skimping where you need it most. The GMC is your flagship. Make it count.
6:05-6:15 he looked like he shit himself hahahahaha
Never been a gm guy. But they did a great job on this one. Ill take ✌lol
When you have to add in, "Most Off-Road Worthy HD *'Diesel'* Truck" In order to prevent it from going up against the Power Wagon XD
With that hood a moderately deep water crossing would be a nightmare
Nice looking truck. Would it be possible to bring an AEV Prospector with a diesel to compare?
Why not use the Chevy Reaper? sits up a lot more
Would still choose a raptor or power wagon before even looking at one of these my 94 F150 on 31x10.5 a/t tires could of crawled dare without a problem gm did a off road package and still killed the ground clearance with the def tank instead of relocating it to compensate for the lack of clearance it already has
35s and a E locker in the rear and this thing would be money for offroading
For steepness of a trail while on video, remember trees always grow straight up and down
Have you heard any rumors about GM relocating or redesigning that DEF tank. That tank the way it is, is enough reason to never let the truck leave the road out of fear of something stupid and unnecessary happening. I'm interested in buying a diesel GM truck but not with that tank the way it is.
It's just another GM IFS mall crawler.
For 72K I wouldn't drive mine up the no way Jose but good to know that I could. But that's what my Jeep is for. Plus hate getting the Duramax dirty :)
You should ask to test a ram 2500 Cummins with the off road package. I bet it would way outdo the GMC. Even without a front locker or swaybar disconnect like the powerwagon.
Wouldn't mind this truck with the vortec gas engine. No Def tank hanging low and more in my price range.
An extended cab version with bigger tires would be dope.
what about a f250 powerstoke with the fx4 package?
TFLtruck when will y’all take a newer fx4 f250 up cliffhanger 2.0 and gold mine hill? You’ve taken most every other truck brand up them.
It looks like a big Ridgeline with a vulnerable DEF tank and low hanging frame.
I wonder if those lights on the sports bar even do anything all the way back there
@thefastlanetruck, when can we see the new Superduty PowerStroke and the Ram Cummins tackle Cliffhanger??
Dodge RAM needs to put a Diesel in the Power Wagon and Rebel for those who want it...
I Love the HEMI V-8 and it has higher revving to get out of a mess in some situations, where a diesel cant rev quick enough so it gets stuck..!
