Let's Paint a German Camouflage BY BRUSH | Rutscher | Das Werk 1/35

- A small, lightly armored, and mobile tank hunter like this would be mainly used as an ambush and quick response vehicle. Therefore I think its main advantage would be camouflage, so I came up with this tightly packed two tone paintwork containing the standard German Yellow with patches of Olive Green.

Hey guys, I did a small upgrade on Patreon for 2020. Now you can watch new videos 1 week early! This means that some Patrons can already watch the next video about washes and oil paints as we speak, so yeah, that's now a thing 😁
Really like the camoflague!
Amazing!
Geiles Video!!
Ever used laquer primers instead of oil based? Alcohol based primers, also called "dry fall" by professional painters since it dries before it hits the ground, works as primer on both wood, plastic, sheet rock or in a modelers case, scupltamold/plasters. I used to use it for repainting smoke/fire damaged buildings. It dries quickly enough I was able to do a primer in laquer and finish coat in latex the same afternoon without the latex bubblingdue to off gassing by the laquer primer. They're usually a bit more expensive but if time is a issue they're the way to go for priming. When I was in the Army in 78 we still used brushes and rollers to paint the cammo on our armored vehicles. Our mess crew painted "SEX" on the side of their 21/2 truck in cammo as joke and one our 8 inch self propelled howitzers had "My big Eight Inch" painted on the barrel.
Amazing work! And I have never heard of this vehicle, so thanks!
Seeing the inside of Night Shift's house is like seeing into the expanded lore of this channel
Also, lovely camoflauge
"You can hardly tell it's shape"
Isn't that the entire point of camo?
Yeah, that's the shitty part about it. If you do really well, your model will look shit because your eyes get confused. As they should be, looking at camouflage. So then you go ahead to make your own good camo worse so the model looks cool XD
Yes but now you have to do more work weathering to get the parts and the detail to be visible
That’s why Allied WWII vehicles are better for beginning painters. “Camouflage? Ha, that’s for the Huns old chap.” 🤣
@@MassiveTestes good for in a real tank, bad in a model
@@MassiveTestes so if i just pour all my different tamiya paint on the tank, it would make a good camo?
I haven’t built a model kit since early high school (9 years ago) but recently I’ve decided I wanted to try it again, and I found this video randomly on UA-cam and it was very encouraging because every video I’ve seen so far on UA-cam used an airbrush which I do not have, so thank you for making me feel a bit better as a beginner without much supplies
Finally! I'm cheap so I don't use an airbrush, but now night shift has some ideas on brush painting the whole thing! Thanks!
Martin ... always with an ace up his sleeve for us.
Nice way to start off the new year with a new video from Uncle Night Shift.
Really great process of hand brushing the camo pattern. Look forward to all the detailing.
Totally interested in the camo creation video. Building mostly German armor, it should be super useful. Thanks!
"ill admit this is not my best work" now i want to see you showing off your best work, because that looked incredible and beyond what me or any of my hobby friends could do
Channels like u inspired me to start to model again. Visited Bastogne with my family and I picked up a FW190 kit and my 14 year old brother got an American plane.
Great video. I had forgotten modelling at some point, but You made me reocupy modeling again. With new techniques and setup, here i come, so thank you!
"But I like the pattern!... It looks like a salamander!" (7:54 - 7:56)
That quote is gold
Amazing work Night Shift! Your painting technique is very impressive.
I would like to see all of your models. And this video is helped me a lot. Now im painting a king tiger, with a brush, and i learned a lot. Thanks to your video. You are the best modeller in youtube, other modellers videos are boring. But yours, to me, is very entertaining. :D
A general rule of thumb for spraying acrylics and getting the best results will be 60/40 mix. 60% thinners to 40% paint. It's usually a never fail recipe especially for MIG and Vallejo. Thanks for the vid man. See ya on the next one.
I got into modeling because of you Night Shift, I love your videos and advice you give. I'm building my first model right now, a Mitsubishi zero! Cheers for everything, from Australia
I may not build military models, but I'm getting a ton of ideas and tips for the gunpla kits i make
As someone whom does both, and crossovers between 'em, I'd say they have a lot in common :)
Hey Martin, nice video again! I'm using ammo paints by a feel kits right now, in a tropical weather, with good results. First rule on acrilyc paints: dont give up on them on the first try.....they are a little trick but brings very nice results when you got the hand. Tip, diluate something about 40%, with 18psi pressure. I usualy cover the model with 3 our 4 layers depending on the color...
You nailed !!! You said you can hardly tell its shape -- that's the purpose of camouflage- to break
up the outline.
Good video!!! Am building this very same kit - was not expecting it to be so tiny!! Anyway, I usually use spray paint or air brush to lay down the base coat and almost always hand paint the camo. Usually I'll draw the camo lines on vehicle with a thin pencil then start brushing on paint - not too worried about the soft/hard edges for do not really care. AWESOME CAMO SCHEME!!
This turned out very good! I can't paint to save my life, even one or two-tone models!
Night shift:Errrmmm atm you can hardly see its shape...
Me: congratulations you just master camouflage thats the point 😄.
Looks good to me rather Germans or Japanese/Italian armour..... not into stalinium... had enough bias on Wt 😀..
Thank you so much for explaining how you clean your models! I always see people recommending that you do this, but I never really understood how it was supposed to dry without just getting more dust on the model
Dear Martin, Happy New Year to you & Family, I enjoyed your tutorial very much. I have just bought a cheap airbrush, but prefer old style paint brushes. Looking forward to more instalments. Kind Regards Johnny
Undercoating yellow with pink is very popular in the wargaming crowd. It gives the shadows a deeper reddish tone of yellow while allowing a brighter yellow on surface details.
Thanks Uncle Night Shift! As always so pleasant to watch some of your techniques
I got this kit for Christmas, so I will be using your videos while I build this.
That is superb, better than I could of ever achieve when I was younger and steadier.
Most German tanks and AFV that i have researched have factory red oxide primer. It's more "accuracy" vs "aesthetics." I also spray chip most of my builds, so the red oxide is definitely what you want to see. It's also sprayed before the zimmerit processes and base color usually sprayed directly over the zimmerit.
So many great tips for new builders in just the first few minutes. great video.
A good way to start the new year with a new video from uncle nightshift! Great brush painting work! 👌
I dont even make/build models not am I good at it and I dont even pain but I automatically love this channel
Really love your content night shift!! But please please pleeeeease do more guides. It doesn't even have to be a new video, just combine previous footage of similar techniques you use on different tanks. Yes I realize most of your vids are already kind of like guides but sometimes you don't go into enough detail for newbies and I feel like you do stuff that might be obvious to you behind the scenes, but not so obvious for us beginners!
this video was especially useful because i was a bit stuck on how to approach the camo on my jagdpanther, thanks for the promised video martin :)
This looks quite nice for a Brush paint job!
Thank you for this video. I think this will save my King Tiger. I only have some spray cans and brushes, so masking was kind of disaster because it was impossible to cover all details. I will remove the paints and try again with this method!
Looks nice! Brave move the brush option, nice!
I paint with a brush from start to finish, with the exception of an occasional use of Krylon Fusion rattle can paint if I like the color as a base coat. I find brush painting that way feels more rewarding, and I appreciate what I did more when finished. I guess I'm just old fashioned. Anyway, I look forward to more of your stuff here on UA-cam.
"This is not my best work" while I'm sitting here wishing I can paint like that, oof. Anyways great job and Happy New Year!
My favourite youtubet had posted again!
It's like a late Christmas present getting a new night shift video. I think the model looks awesome and can't wait to see the weathering video Happy New Year to you too
Brilliant brush work on the camo, really looking forward to the next video. Best of luck in 2020. 👍🏼
I never thought i'd see the day! That's an awesome job you did there!
Hand painted a German range finder for my tank by hand last night. 😅 it came out okay I hand painted in rotbraun then hair sprayed it with what my wife calls “expensive” hair spray then with buff and chips. Looks okay for a first attempt.
Cute tank looks like 1/72 scale
Martin you did a amazing job always. I can't wait to see the other Videos
You prime with red because many later colour layers are (to varying degrees) translucent. The underlying colour will influence the colours above. You can often see that in portrait painting where the artist influences the skin colour with the colour of the underlying shadows.
I use it in some minis when I undercoat silver areas blue and gold areas red.
Cammo always looks better brush painted, nice job.
I use matt/ gloss medium from Windsor Newton for acrylics. Its concentrate so mixes down with de-ionized water, bottle will last for ages
That model looks mad good bro.
Beautiful paint job mate, well done.
Great video Uncle Martin! That hand painted camo is a lot better than I could ever do (my hands shake due to CTE/PARKINSON'S). I'd like to see a video on hard-edged airbrushing.
Martin!!!!! Happy new year, my beautiful human! That camo looks awesome
I really do look forward to your videos.
Happy New Year! Informative and entertaining as always..... Now let's see the photoshop work.
7:47 Are you kidding me?
I can hardly achive that look with my brushes...
Excellent work!
Class act stuff Night Shift!
You know those “models” that come pre-built and painted for display? It would be interesting video if you got one and made it better / correct as well as review what they have done.
Uncle Night Shift🤪 you could paint the Antenna mount Black or grey. It was normally forbidden to paint them. This would raise the contrast at your model
Love the camo pattern Martin. The hand-painted camo looks nice and smooth this is the way I do it as well... similar to figure painting when undercoating a uniform. Nice tip about the Ammo paint. I'll make sure I add a satin coat to my T-34-122 before I weather it. I've not used Ammo before either and didn't know that enamel thinner will destroy it. Very odd considering its acrylic paint. Anyway Happy New Year! Cheers,
Great vid mate. Love from 🇩🇪🇩🇪
“The paint dries mid air and makes the model look bad”
*as the paint still looks great*
Always look forward to these releases
Nice work, yeah that judge shouldn't have been there if they didn't know about armor textures, love the camo so far, hope your new year is going well :)
Outstanding brushwork. G’day and Happy New Year from Australia Mate.
Your hand painted camo looks far better than many of that painted with airbrush. ;) All the best for You in 2020! ;)
Well, I'm gonna be painting a Mirage 2000d in French air force camo with a brush becausei dont have an airbrush. So wish me luck. Love your videos btw, they're really professional
Good luck!
Just, like uncle Night Shift mentioned, make sure your paints are properly thinned and everything should go smoothly. Wish you a happy build my friend
@@vonsopas thank you
@@vonsopas I wish I read this earlier, just did 3 coats unthinned on an F35 and it's so bad 🤪 I'm thinking to sandpaper out the strokes, you think that works? 🤔
@@cthzierp5830 Hi! you could try some solvent or paint remover (one which won't damage the plastic of the model) or maybe go straight to sanding with water sand paper, just watch for not damaging too much the panel lines or repaneling after removing the paint. This guy Night Shift have some videos on painting so I would suggest to do some research here and through Google. Most of all, have fun! Cheers matey!
I tend to also paint my camofaulge schemes so its great to see this =D it looks awesome, definitely looking forward to the next video, that patreon sounds so tempting to see it early ^^; Happy new year, hope you had a good christmas!
Nightshift, we would love to see you build an aircraft! Please consider that for a future video. We know you would do great. How about, the Ju-87G, German tank of the sky during WWII?
IL-2 did have this steel bathtub or something inside, didn't it? 😂
@@NightShiftScaleModels Yes, it was incorporated into the monocoque structure
You'd need a lot of battle damage to see a rusted tub.
Ooh, battle damage (drool). ;>)
Just remember that the later models had swept back outer wings to compensate for the rearward movement of the CG due to extra armor for the rear gunner.
No, the real flying tank from Germany is the Hs 129.
They also made it a dedicated tank destroyer, Hs 129 B-3, with a 75mm anti tank gun. They made the default AT-gun lighter and added a drum autoloader.
If I remember correctly the Hs 129 is the only aircraft to halt an armored advance, all by it self. There was ofc a squadron of them not just one.
Mate - it looks GREAT!
Happy New years! Beautiful hard camo pattern...
Love the camouflage pattern! I will try this pattern. Thank you.
It looks pretty good, I use a brush to paint camouflage on 1/72 scale tanks and armor , it turns out good.
Can't wait to see the next part. Happy new year by the way
I have had great luck hand painting 1.87 models by hand. Camo paters are quite forgiving as they vary greatly from tank to tank. The key is keeping a mostly uniform size of spots or stripes.
Happy new year Uncle Night Shift! :)
Super video a všetko dobré do nového roka :D
Happy new year. That hand made camo looks great, ill try for my next tank for sure, thank you!
My friend airbrushed his 1/16 tanks with mig and uses it straight out of the bottle without thinner and it looks fantastic
Great video dude 🍀
the photoshop video seems interesting and i would be all for seeing it
This was video I was searching for a long time
I miss scale modelling so much! I had to move to a small town for university, and I don't really have money, space and time for it:( .Spent my money on a sweet mountain bike (Fuji Auric LT 1.3 2020), because I live surrounded by mountains and dh trails. I definitely don't regret getting the bike, but I sure miss modelling. Well I'll have to figure something out.
Great vid as always, wish you a happy new year ^^.
I feel ya, but honestly I think MTB is a better choice, at least for the time being. Modelling won't go anywhere :)
I'm currently being tempted by the new Mondraker Superfoxy and 2020 Specialized Enduro, but I think I'll pass. My bathroom needs restoration :D
@@NightShiftScaleModels Yeah that specialized is pretty sweet, got rated really well in Pinkbike's field test, the Superfoxy is sick too. I'd wait for the end of the season for 2020 models tho , as all the stuff gets so much cheaper. (Or do as I did and work in a bike shop for a few months, to get some extreme discounts :D ). Good luck with that bathroom ^^
If I can give a small advice, I'm painting with brushes and, to apply camouflage, I prefer the use of a Q-tip to that of a brush: the result looks better..! ;)
You can try Hataka orange line (laquer) in your next video. Hataka smells less than Gunze or other laquer paints and has much bigger colour range as Tamiya
Thank you , Martin .
Very Nice work !!!!! Congratulations from Brasil 🇧🇷
Nice video again, happy new year uncle !
Great job bro!! Looks great!! Currently I’m working through the Tamiya M4A3 105mm 1/35. I’ve used you weld, and round deflection mark methods on it and it looks great!! Thanks bro ;)
Looks at my battle of the Somme kit yea I think it’s good the dry brushing worked with the weathering sees this it seems I have failed
Yes on the Photo Shop video.
Very enjoyable video. Thanks for all the work.
I tried MIG paints and tecnique and thinning is different even between colours!! Strange and too frustrating to use all the time and I use them for very specific colours i can't get elsewhere.
Got my airbrush today! :D
looks cool i'm impatient to see the next vid , personnaly i don't have an airbrush cause my appartment is small. ur technic with brush looks excellent . the only thing : i can't use mig paints it's very strange and frustrasting these paints goes me crasy impossible for me to use that paints with brush , i think i use a wrong technic they dry to fast and ruin my work if i dilute more they give a strange effect with boils . so i use hataka blue line i like this facturer these paints are really goods . see ya
I don’t thin ammo paints at all, I’ve noticed that it orange peels a lot more when I do. I spray straight from the bottle at 10-15 psi
Don’t let wargaming see this, or we will have a German double barreled TD tech line.
haha
Happy New Year Martin.
🎆🎉happy new year, Martin!🎉🎆🥂
hope to see that camo creation video this year! also, for acrylics(Vallejo) i add 1-2 drops of glycerin! ✌🏻
I would love to see a video of how to make your own color profiles.
I do models that are hard to paint without proper pictures of the camouflage, and it would be awesome to test out the camo before I put it down on the model.
You can also add a drop of Mr thinner Self leveling thinner to help ammo paints
