Color Modulation With Oil Paints? Sort Of... | Rutscher | Das Werk 1/35

  • It's time to make this two-tone camouflage more interesting. We'll apply some "wet" techniques like filters, oil dots, washes, ambient occlusion and also some fake color gradients which resemble the color modulation technique.

    Absolutely brilliant! I’m an ex-tank crewman and i find it interesting model makers rarely show the effects of the crew’s occupation on the vehicle. There have always been rules that vehicles must be mounted from the front. Over time this makes a discoloured path over the front and onto the turret where it splits as commander and crewmen enter via their hatchways. Engine decks have a lot of discolouration due to fuel and oil spillage as well.

    YES! This is a prime reference video - by covering several complimentary techniques in one session, it becomes far more apparent to the viewer what the effects are and how they build to a cumulative result. It pushes home the value of your process a lot more easily than some of the longer paint jobs where comparing the look from one week to the next is not so easy. All your videos are excellent - it just kind of makes it 'pop' and seem doable when you get a nice little chunk of progress like this one though.
    Makes me want to head into town and get some oils!

      @@kshatriya1414 It's just one of those word plays without any meaning, so it's meant to be hard to pronounce. You only say it if you want to challenge your friends so you can laugh at them while they struggle to say it fast. Or you say it several times to "warm up" your tongue before a speech. As such, I don't think it can be translated, but since literal translations are so fun, it's something like "the gloviest glove"

    For all your perfectly made videos and all the amazing techniques you show and teach us.
    I was calling myself an advanced modeller when I started my own channel more than 2 years ago and I stuck with what I had already learned without getting significantly better.
    But thanks to your channel I learned so much already and keep learning new stuff so that my own skills are pushed to a whole new level.

      Thanks so much! To be honest, I also found myself to be a little stagnant. I just got into my comfort zone where I was very happy with each of my finished models and didn't see any reason to try different stuff. Also if you focus only on complex, detailed and expensive builds which take you months to assemble, you definitely don't want to experiment on those.
      But since I started this channel I've been building more simple models and also experimenting with new techniques, or techniques I didn't use in a long time and it's so much more fun, even if these models aren't my best!

    I looked at your videos for the Rutscher build. The box cover art showing the tank in a large solid dot camouflage similar to an "octopus-style" paint job looked interesting. I guess you'd call it an ambush paint job. Of course, it is a proposed tank and entirely your "canvas" with which to experiment. As always, you do a really nice job on your builds.

    I love your videos! But it cracks me up that scale modelers have adopted the 3d term "ambient occlusion" as some sort of technique. It's just shading and enhancing shadows.
    It all boils down to shading and color. I enjoy working with a cheap set of watercolor paints for this type of work.

    Adding pine needle branches, or branches from a tree, correct from where the tank would be operating in its theatre of war would be amazing because a tank destroyer would be hiding as much as possible to get kills a few branches or even more then a few around the top and front of the tank would look amazing my guy would love to see that on this model and I think it would make it even better

    • @NightShiftScaleModels
      @NightShiftScaleModels  4 роки тому

      Yes exactly!! This is what I've been thinking about since I painted it! I even wanted to add numerous small tie-downs on the sides of the tank while I was building it, but I got lazy. If I added those, I could wrap a thin wire across the entire superstructure which would allow me to put some branches under them (that's how they did it in real life).

    Thanks for another great video my friend... for the shadows, I airbrush diluted Tamiya clear smoke to get a gradient effect that's transparent but still provides depth... other clear paints (like yellow) can also be airbrushed as filters . Everything is then blended and toned down with AK Ultra Matt varnish.

    • @NightShiftScaleModels
      @NightShiftScaleModels  4 роки тому +2

      Definitely a black brown, white, tan (or some dusty color), some green and that's probably it. If you're on a super tight budget these paints should work on most models. Like, black brown can be used for almost everything, you can mix it into a wash that will work on any color, create shadows with it, streaking effect, fuel and grease stains, you name it.
      OR you can buy one of those crappy cheap beginner oil paint sets from an art store. I started with those when I was younger and as long as you remove the linseed oil, they'll work fine (squeeze the paint on a piece of cardboard and wait a few minutes until the oil gets absorbed into the cardboard)

      Night Shift thanks for the reply and the heads up about the linseed oil

    It is not that difficult to spell:
    Root (like from a tree)
    Shah (of Persia)
    Root-Shah :)
    Or Root-Chair - It depends which german accent you prefer. :D
    Anyway: Great video as always!

      Rutscher means Slide or one more

      Literally it would mean "Slider" but it really isn't a word anyone uses for anything. I mean: It technically exists but that's basically it. :D

    Can you apply filters with airbrush? If yes, the result like he did it with painbrush?

    • @NightShiftScaleModels
      @NightShiftScaleModels  4 роки тому +1

      You can airbrush clear paints over your model to create a filter. Tamiya clear paints work great for this, although they need to be mixed with some clear varnish too, otherwise they'd be too opaque. I tried airbrushing enamel filters too, but it's actually harder to control their even distribution over the surface.

    I was just reading about this on Wilders website. Update: I added weld beads to my King Tiger. Not the easiest thing to do with putty and it looks like the guy that welded the tank was drunk. Some areas look like actual welding and other not so much lol I guess I will keep.

      It's about practice, practice and more practice! Life hack: it's best to practice on Soviet tanks. It'll always look realistic because factory workers were drunk.
