Hey Greg - thanks for the note, man. Never knew how easy it can be to learn how to play the harmonica. I will be starting when I get my set of harmonicas tomorrow. I've "tinkered" with a couple of them before. But, have never had my own to play. Am just going to be playing for fun and to have something to do with some of my spare time when I'm not in the mood to paint, do needlecrafts, etc. Also, I'm a 52 YO lady who loves doing many different crafts. And, I've often wanted to learn how to play the harmonica. Specially the theme song to "The Walton's" because I always loved watching that series as a child. Is there any way you could make a video on how to play that theme song. I'd appreciate it so much if you can. Keep your videos coming for us all, please. And, thank you so much for this one. It has made me unafraid to "pick up" and add a new talent to my repertoire. 😉
Hi I started to learn to play tremolo harmonica since just last month but I plan to buy maybe just an easttop T800k model. But it is okay if my request will not be granted I will still continue watching repeatedly your videos because it is very entertaining to watch and very informative. God bless your channel. Awesome beginning lesson, Luke. I really liked the fact that you gave a very basic lesson and turned it into a song immediately. I have to ask... Is JP still playing? I haven't seen him in quite awhile.
@@Harmonicacom Glad to hear he's still harpin' (and not like my wife does). I worked with him and Jason (if he's still there) on the Breakthrough Blues and Jam-Along programs a little. Hope the chance comes along to help out again. That was a blast. Give them my best. Keep up the great lessons!
hey Luke, first of all thank you for teaching us (I never imagined I can play any musical instrument ever) and you are awesome tutor too! So, I just wanna ask how did you do that jump on the "In the jungle" first line from 4 Blow to 4 Drow?
Hey Luke .. Sorry for the many question .. !!! it is normal for a beginner to have a sort of feelings on the lip where you put and slide the armonica? I'm practicing every day.. maybe a hour .. and i notice some feelings to my lips .. not pain not bad feelings but some i will call "scrub". .. that's normal... anyway .. i'mm beginning to be able to isolate notes .. thanks to you ,,,
Ask away, my friend. Congrats on beginning to be able to isolate notes! Yes, that's normal to have the lips feel a little chaffed after playing for an hour. Depending on the harmonica you're playing, some are more comfy on the lips than others. Plastic combs are more comfortable than wooden combs. Cover plates that hide the reed plates completely are more comfortable than ones that have the reed plates a little exposed. If you're interested in considering purchasing a different harmonica, here is my article about brands: www.harmonica.com/which-harmonica-to-buy/
@@Harmonicacom Yes , thank you so much.. already read it .. the Lee Oskar is lost into the postal service .. i got a Hohner Blues Harp that seems to me at least better than the Fender.. unfortunately it was the only one i could get at my local store .. dammit ..

Hello: I enjoy your method of teaching and currently trying to learn the C scale. It is difficult to get the 5 and 7 draw sometimes. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal?
- yes this is perfectly normal problem that beginners experience. These are the tips for a getting good those high notes: 1.) Let gravity lower your jaw so that it's totally relaxed and in a nice "aw" vowel shape, your teeth should be far apart from each other 2.) Keep the back of your tongue down, like it is when you yawn. Make sure it's not in the "Kk" zone (how your tongue is when you say a "Kk" consonant.) 3.) Nice steady, GENTLE, airflow. Most beginners (and many intermediate and advanced players) use WAY to much pressure. Hope that helps! 😎 Aloha, Luke
hey, thanks for the video! i'll give you an idea, if i may. I'd appreciate the pentagram appart from the tab so i know how many beats do every note last!
Hi Luke! Thank you so much for all your awesome videos. I just found out in this video that you get all 3 octaves on a diatonic harmonica. I play (a tiny bit) a 12-hole chromatic harmonica which I hear offers 3 octaves and so far it seems I can play any song on it I want. I mean it seems to support all the notes of any song that's out there and I had a question: If a diatonic harmonica offers all 3 octaves, assuming I learn to produce all the bends/notes on the diatonic, then does it mean it's possible to play any chromatic-playable song on the diatonic as well? I hope I didn't twist the question too much. What I basically mean is does the diatonic support all the notes a 12-hole chromatic supports?
Great question. I understand you. I actually have an article coming out soon on this subject. The answer is no. 3 octaves + high C should be 37 notes, but the harmonica has only 19. With bending technique (which takes a lot of time to be able to do well) you get to 31. Then an even MORE difficult technique called overblowing on holes 4, 5, and 6 gets 3 more notes. And then the last 3 notes requires and overdraw technique and special set-up to obtain other overblows. So it IS possible, but it's NOT easy. Howard Levy is the original master of these techniques. The 12-hole chromatic is the fastest and easy way to be able to play lots of chromatic stuff.
@@Harmonicacom Thank you very much! This is unbelievably helpful. Also, I checked out your other video on how to bend a note and it took me only 2 days to do it. I'm still bad at it, but you've got to be the best harmonica teacher ever!
Hey Brett - great question! Harmonicas are tuned this way so that we can get a C major chord when we blow, and then a G7 chord when we draw holes 1-6. There are LOTS of alternate tunings that are becoming more and more popular. If you're interested in exploring them, you can check out this forum thread: forum.harmonica.com/t/different-tuning-harmonicas/5989?u=luke A lot of the alternate tunings still have this switch between holes 6 and 7, but not all of them. It's just something we have to get used to. Hope that helps. Rock on, Luke
what are the second half lyrics, because there are 3 verses in this song, as I looked the lyrics up (you didn't share them in this lesson)...thanks for your help.

\\thanks you Thank you Luke!
I am so thankful its help me a lot and get my sadness go Heheheh.. You are a good teacher We learned slowly but quickly.
Learning slowly is the fastest way to grow! Yes, let the harmonica chase those blues away. Rock on my sister.
Aloha,
Luke
Why are all the blows lower than draws until you hit 7 and then it flips? How do harmonicas work for that to be the case?
Hey Brett - great question! Harmonicas are tuned this way so that we can get a C major chord when we blow, and then a G7 chord when we draw holes 1-6.
There are LOTS of alternate tunings that are becoming more and more popular. If you're interested in exploring them, you can check out this forum thread:
forum.harmonica.com/t/different-tuning-harmonicas/5989?u=luke
A lot of the alternate tunings still have this switch between holes 6 and 7, but not all of them.
It's just something we have to get used to. Hope that helps.
Rock on,
Luke
@@Harmonicacom Thank you for replying! That was really informative and I appreciate you taking the time to help me out :)

You’re welcome, Alan.
what are the second half lyrics, because there are 3 verses in this song, as I looked the lyrics up (you didn't share them in this lesson)...thanks for your help.
Same basic melody I think?
Thanks a lot!
My pleasure.
Thanks for this video!!!!!!! I was wondering if you would know where I could find help to play the melodica. It's a vintage one where the keys are on either side
You’re welcome. I don’t have any references for you for melodica lessons.
I want to learn the harmonica. We have a sisters group that sing and play. We mostly sing in “A” ,”D” and “ G”. I bought an A harmonica. Why do all your lessons use the “C”harmonica?
Thanks for the amazing video!
You’re very welcome, Frederico!
nice lesson!! Maestro.

@@Harmonicacom of course

You're welcome, Ganesh!
My harmonica makes a dog squeaker toy type sound on the 4 or 5 draw. Is that normal?
Hard to say for sure if it's technique or harmonica. What brand and how old is your harmonica?

Wondering if it is definitely best to start with a C...instead of a D?
Yes, definitely.
What do you think about chromatic harmonicas?
Chromatic harmonicas are like a totally different instrument from diatonic. I don’t teach chromatic.
3:31. You did it again, 2 sounds, was it supposed to have 2 sounds?
Nope. That was an accident too.
