My intentions of including the "iykyk" keyword are extremely clear, this content exists on the surface web and you should be aware of what keywords and tools creeps are using so that you can avoid them. The unfortunate reality is that a sizable chunk of internet users will at some point in their lives be exposed to this content. Either in some sort of sick joke or falling down an internet rabbit hole due to not knowing the warning signs. Seeing this content is traumatic, it scars you for life and I hope that bringing awareness to this issue reduces the number of people that have to deal with the mental torment of being exposed to this material. One thing that I wish I included is that you should NEVER click on a mega .nz link. So stay away from ambiguous server tags or server names and stay away from mega .nz links. While mega .nz is a normal file hosting service, the encryption element of it prevents automated CSAM hash detection software from flagging the material and putting the piece of human trash behind bars. Discord does automatically flag content that is uploaded to Discord as noted in this article: discord.com/blog/discord-transparency-report-q4-2022#heading-5 And while I do genuinely believe that the vast majority of my audience clearly know how disgusting this content is, there is a non-zero chance that a viewer out of the 750k+ views is a creep. Thankfully if that creep uses the "iykyk" keyword to seek out this content on Discord, they are almost always going to end up in a fed trap where they get their well deserved migration to a concrete cell. Also, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO FIND THIS CONTENT SO YOU CAN REPORT IT. That is the duty of NCMEC (National Centre for Missing & Exploited Children). If you unfortunately stumble across or are sent this content maliciously, please file a report at report.cybertip.org/ Filing a report is REQUIRED if you see this content. It helps protect you from an investigation, you also help others from being shown this material, and ultimately you aid in the investigation to save the poor child. I strongly believe that the benefits of teaching people how to avoid this traumatic content significantly outweigh the possibilities of a creep using this information (which just leads to them going into a trap laid by the feds. I know people will disagree with me because this is the internet but I assure you that I have thoroughly thought about whether or not this information should be kept or omitted from the video and I hope this clarification helps you understand my perspective.
Really goes to show that discord didn't think this through when a parental control option as obvious as "disable access to NSFW channels" isn't included
@@robertplayz9157 "tools to bypass this" you mean kids just selecting their age as over 18? literally every single kid does that whenever they sign up or visit a site, i was making my age higher on websites even when i was literally 8-9
@LeafBoi you do not have to verify a single thing at all to go on nsfw channels, you only need a phone number and an email so you can create a discord account and then you have full unrestricted access to discord when you try to access a nsfw channel it just warns you "this channel is marked as age-restricted" and has a continue and cancel button, thats it thing is, you dont even need to mark channels as nsfw, its an OPTIONAL thing, you can post whatever images or say whatever words you want and it wont be censored or anything
@LeafBoi nope, I have a few discord accounts and a couple are new, and I joined some servers on them, and all I need to do on any of my accounts is just click “continue” when it comes up with the “this channel has been marked as nsfw” warning and boom, I’m in In fact, almost every single porn website ever made has the same amount of restriction, just a little warning that says “are you 18 or over?” with a yes or no option and boom, kids can just lie and click the yes option and see porn extremely easily.
@LeafBoi Some servers that involve NSFW content may do that but most of them don't. The ones that ask for your ID are often not a good place to be in anyway
When can we go back to teamspeak and mumble i hate not having servers on my own extra laptops when my friends left and formed their own discord i knew it was a mistake
if you have a service like discord and it's not a strict 18+ thing then you obviously need parental controls, but no one makes a discord account that's under 18 unless their parents made them
As someone who grew up with parental control loving over-protective parents. Parental controls do literally nothing in keeping a kid safe, or moderate their usage of stuff. Being controlling and restrictive of your kids interests just breeds distrust between you and them, and just trains them to be more sneaky in doing what they want as opposed to sucking up to you to get more screentime or whatever.
best parental control is the parent teaching and raising their kid to be open, honest, and generally keeping a healthy relationship of trust and privacy. parental controls just tell the kid they aren't trusted
Was exactly the same way for me. My father constantly took away my phone but that just made me look around on the internet or whatever it was he feared even more.
i had qustodio on my tablet when i was like 11 and, already suffering from an anxiety disorder, became EXTREMELY paranoid. it reported the most innocuous shit, and i was scared to go on any website in case it got reported (i went on wattpad once and got banned from it by my mom). plus, it's not like it even stopped me from seeing inappropriate stuff!! if you go down enough of a rabbithole on google images, you can find whatever you want, and it isn't reported. parental control did nothing to keep me safe but everything to instill fear and anxiety into me until i got a new device and didn't have to use them anymore
Yeah no one time my dad tried controlling my Discord usage by seizing control of my account using sheer verbal force (screaming, lot's of screaming, it's genuinely terrifying, and you DO NOT attempt to resist or else actual bad things will happen) He changed the password to something else, and told me that I was to ask him for the login everytime I wanted to go on Discord, and I was to log out every evening. However I had keylogged my computer as he entered his password, so then I knew what it was, and could therefore still use Discord whenever I wanted, although to not give things away, I always made sure to ask him to sign me back in periodically This dragged on for a few months, before I had accidently gone on way too long without asking my dad to log in, he asked me about it, and I gave him the truth, which was that I had been logged in entire time (however I didn't mention the keylogging), and it was there that he wrote down his password on a sticky note, slammed it down in front of me, and stormed off in rage. It took about 2 days for him to shake off his anger, but he never tried doing that again, thankfully
Yep, time controls only work if your kid is never unattended, or they'll figure out how to use bios to change the time. Parental controls only block the most surface level stuff that might make your kid horny but won't get them into anything straight up illegal. And making your kid unwilling to talk about that stuff makes them unwilling to talk to you about the guy online who they occasionally feel is a bit uncomfortable to talk to but always makes it up to them with fun games and by listening to their problems at home and giving them advice...
This concerns me terribly because so many adolescents on discord vent about their incredibly abusive and manipulative parents. Discord was a safe space for them to get help and support from other teens going through the same thing. I can only imagine what terrible things their parents would do finding out about them venting about their problematic behavior.
As a 17 year old that has never had any control from parents (partially due to the fact they really aren't into tech stuff), I agree. I literally helped a few people remove their parental controls from Windows or negotiate with them. I reassured some people. I made them get their phones back without even asking parents for permission. I just love helping others this way as long as they are cool people, not annoying ones. And you know? In my opinion this should be really considered self-defense.
@@MeowserLJC thanks, I just do what I feel is right. Generally if I see someone who is nice and mature (doesn't expect me to babysit them or help them with viruses they installed from really obvious scams), I help. I just refuse to help those with 0 IQ. What is sad for me though is that many give up or want to sneak instead of doing it an open way. Fear is the killer. If someone here needs help, just tell me, I can try but I cannot guarantee anything.
the stupidest part of all this is that the majority of child abuse is committed by parents, teachers, and other authority figures in the kid's life you know, exactly the kind of people that this system gives extra surveillance tools to
EXACTLY! so many teens rant about their abusive parents on discord too, i’ve seen it personally. if those kids have these restrictions placed on them, they will have nowhere to go.
just because some people have shit parents doesn't mean that the good parents shouldn't have a way to let their kid on the internet while making sure they arent being groomed.
@@carsonj4031 it really doesn't help though. they explained that in the video?? didn't you watch it. if you can't see the contents of the messages you have no real way of knowing if your kids are being groomed
I love how they do something that does nothing, and say “They can’t see the content of your messages” which is literally the ONLY way you can know if your kid is doing something bad
Ofc this all sucks but come on, atleast do it well. Like having options- notify if your child says (insert custom words), swears, or suggestive things.
if they gave access to the message contents, how many kids would get sent to conversion camps for revealing that they're in the closet? (then again, how many kids are gonna get sent to conversion camps because they talked to someone who's got a rainbow flag in their username?)
My mom's therapist literally told her not to be super adamant about being on Discord to watch me or whatever. It turns out that communicating and being able to trust your child to not be talking to absolute creeps isn't actually that hard
It doesn’t matter, because they’re going to make some youtube ad while being all meta about it and people are going to eat it up and call Discord “relatable”
As a kid with helicopter parents, this is my absolute nightmare. I'm just looking through the usernames I've had DMs with and...yikes. Discord is setting us up for a "What the hell did you say to them?" situation. Also, showing them what servers we are in often allows them to join all of those servers and see what we are saying and when.
this is quite honestly needed, parent's supervising their children more, ESPECIALLY on a place like discord. i've been on the app for 5 years and have seen grooming and pedo's so many times in countless servers, literal nudity in voice chat's, gore and corn being sent in servers without mods caring (while the server is 13+), blatant racism, etc. this is only scratching the surface of discord. however this does create a scenario for abusive/controlling parents to make a toxic dynamic for when their child is on discord.
Same boat with the overbearing parents. Really need people to recognize how unhelpful parental controls are. It just ends in the kid being more sneaky in doing what they want, not more moderate. And it breeds distrust in the relationship.
As someone who got their phone taken away and discord messages read and screenshotted as "evidence" during their teen years. I am both glad that this wasn't a thing back then and also feel really bad for the kids that will be subjected to this BS.
@JayFeather evidence that i was taking to "creeps" and so i couldn't deny taking to "creeps". Spoilers, my discord friends are not "creeps" and i still am close to them and consider them my family to this day.
My parents don't know I have discord (I use the website, not the app) but ik my mom would be scrolling through all my messages, and with the amount of dark humor memes I share, I would get into a lot of trouble.
It almost ruined my life when my mother found out that I had friends 💀 Also imagine all the bigoted parents out there who send their kids to an abusive camp the instant they see that a gay person has joined into the same Fortnite meme server their kid is in.
Parental controls are what bad parents use to punish their children. My parents never used parental controls (granted there werent many during the early 2000s to mid 2010s) but just taught me how to keep away from that bad shit
Yeah, with my parents it's kind of both. My dad trusts me to stay safe more than my mom does. My mom is a bit more of a helicopter parent, the one that never knocks, goes through my phone a lot etc. I never downloaded discord, I just use the website. But yeah, parents should monitor their kids online if they're younger, but they can do so without hovering over their shoulder at all times. Like just asking them what they do, maybe checking the Ipad if things are suspicious.
@@ducksongfans Like on one hand they lock some pretty neat customisation features behind a paywall, on the other hand, while said features are pretty neat they aren’t worth nearly as much as the price they’re being offered for. It just sucks all around
@Duck Song Fans literally just sending bigger files is 90% of the reason for nitro. 8mb limit is fucking horrible... it should be at least like 50 or something.
The only way to protect your kid is to educate them about how to avoid scams, and never make anything taboo. If you're super weird and cagey about dating or sex, they're way more likely to seek it out. The only long term solution is give them information and be available to talk to.
@TheStudioArchitect He's saying that questions about sex shouldn't be answered with just "I already told you about it" or "you don't need protection because you won't have sex until marriage" he doesn't want it to be a regular evening topic (hopefully) he's saying just to give information, even though my mom gave a lot of information, it wasn't enough. So, I went to the good old internet and found out everything else.
Discord never cared about the community. I’ve been on it since 2017, they’ve never stopped any important issues such as getting rid of malware and inappropriate material involved those that are underage
@@MegaWolf5741 actually, Discord did care at one point. ive been using it since 2015, and a lot of the earliest changes (like that glorious dark theme) were based on feedback. it started to go downhill and become very corporate with the introduction of Nitro, and even moreso now since all of the goofy quirks of the platform (remember the custom loading messages?) have been entirely removed.
They completely wrecked everything a while back on certain devices and didn't listen to any of the backlash at all. You have to go through a whole weird process to make roles now, and the way everything is organized looks gross. It's only like that on my tablets and luckily not my phone or computer, but it's still super annoying
My dad snooped through my entire discord one day and looked specifically through my ENTIRE friend group server. At the time one of them was named "man lover" and my dad brought it to attention at a family gathering during dinner. I later explained that it was just a friend who was trying to be funny. It was super awkward for everyone at the table and I wish I could forget about it. I log out of discord every day now btw.

Can't parental controls be abused by predators as well? Convince a vulnerable kid with a deteriorating relationship with their parents that they're the only person they can trust and to add them as a parent so they can keep them safe. Now the predator can see what servers and friends they have and start manipulating their social circle so they can further isolate them. Only 'positive' is they can't see texts, but they still get tons of information about their victim.
"Guys we have a problem with grooming and CP distribution on our platform" "Maybe we should crack down on it and send all accessible information regarding the culprits and predators to their respective to local authorities" "Naw that's stupid lets add parental controls"
Surprisingly, even as Christian and slightly strict as they are, they say they respect my privacy and won’t invade it. Other parents need to learn from this
Same with my parents, they won’t snoop all my messages or put the fbi spying device to listen to my calls, they just tell me to be careful with what I reveal about myself and who I talk to
Honestly I understand why my parents would be concerned- a lot of the servers I ended up in have vile people I really don’t like interacting with, but my mother knows I can handle myself

so glad to see someone finally talking about disboard, i joined discord when i was 12-13 and those types of servers lead to me getting into some unsavory situatuons. im 17 now and know better but back then it was pretty scary
thank you discord for not fixing the issues on the platform, adding features literally no one asked for, and making me think more about switching to an alternative
This is discrimination to every discord moderator and discord kittens, how do you expect to receive an "add parent request" from someone who is still searching for the milk in the grocery store
oh my god i didnt even think of the relationship trauma this will cause. The discord moderators have a whole new tool to keep an eye on their kitten. yikes
dude for some reason that didn't even cross my fucking mind either. my ex who showed me homemade self harm would totally ask to set this up on my account
Bruh if parents forced their kid to accept them on parental control, they could just create a fake account and accept it 💀 Like this literally solved nothing and it's so broken in so many ways
Update: your video actually makes Disboard removed all of the "iykyk" server search results. it's not longer there after 1 hour, great work honestly, i didn't think they would bother to watch your video and take actions lol.
I knew little of how bad discord is for illicit activities. It’s crazy how safe you are if you just use discord for chatting with your friends and reputable servers
I'm 18 now, but 2 years ago my mom actually freaked out because I got a friend request from someone named "sadist". I am extremely concerned for all the teens that have privacy invading Karens as their mothers because I was one of them, and the major reason as to why I am still alive today is that I had some sort of contact with my "internet friends" that kept me from going insane.
this feature COULD be used in a moderate, safe manner, but most parents who would use this feature like normal, responsible people usually already trust their teens enough to be smart online. what this will be used for is isolating the kids and teens on discord who live in toxic households, who now can no longer safely exist in support groups where they can get help or at the very least someone to talk to when their parents treat them like shit. i fear especially for lgbtq+ youth in homophobic and transphobic households, who no longer can rely on discord as a safe space, because their parents will then find out about that friend of theirs has a pride flag in their profile picture, or that theyre in a lgbtq+ related server, and then get screamed at, hit, or even killed for "associating with the wrong crowd".
Well tbh I find that one scenario beneficial, if someone says "add me to your family center so I can see if you're cheating" then you can immediately just dump them because it's like a red flag detector
i hope so, but there will be problematic factors that play into it most likely. there needs to be a separate platform for kids to be safe and not experience the horrors of discord. they should be able to communicate and have fun with their friends in game and off-game without the grooming, pedos, encountering nudity and gore, blatant racism and shitty behavior of edgy young adults and actual adults, etc. theres countless spaces on discord like this with mods that dont give 2 fucks about their community so they dont moderate or monitor it, some even participate in it. the whole thing is just fucked, no one under 16 should be on discord tbh.
@@amajeee why do you want a discord kids « safe » from pedos, groomers, etc. It’s impossible to keep it safe from them, these pedos and groomers will always be able to log into this discord kids app.
Finally somebody calling out disboard(other people probarbly did already) but u are the first discord content creator i actually watch, cause he has informative stuff to share. And who calls out that platform for allowing that shit 5 days smh...
The best parental control is education; talking with your child about potential dangers and while respecting their privacy, assuring them that they can come to you with anything to talk about things without punishment. Awareness is the best protection.
I can already see the scams and abuse scenarios potentially cropping up from this. Also if they wanted to protect kids, they'd actually moderate the site. Not even keeping contacts restricted can stop you from dealing with bots sometimes.
In an alternate universe, every big tech giant has made no error and actually cares about their community. And I just wish I was in that alternate universe.
most people (like myself), use discord to shit on their parents. kids who feel like they have shit to hide from their guardians, dont want them invading their safe spaces. this has to be one of the dumbest features ive ever seen, aside from super reactions lmao. it seems like such a lazy move too, as you said its a bandaid solution. because they aren't fixing the actual issue at hand, creeps are going to find loopholes. i aint gonna be surprised when i see people finding discord alternatives, at this point its bound to happen. i love discord for what they do have, but holy fuck they're lacking in departments regarding safety.
It’s disgusting how so many parents use technology to constantly watch and control their children, and how companies continue to pander to these people. *edit: I should probably clarify my views on this, being that of course children shouldn't have unrestricted access to the internet, as I personally consider anyone under 10 on the internet to be on the younger side as far as internet users go. I believe that parents need to dedicate a significant and deliberate portion of time from themselves and their child to teach them good internet etiquette; how to use the internet to learn math and science, how to talk to friends and family, how to safeguard passwords in a physical location, how to avoid the dangers of the internet (but not in a way that would leave a kid scared of people and the internet early on), how to recognize and dislike trashy media and content cesspools (twitter, much of UA-cam, TikTok, etc). My fear is of the growing trend of companies creating additions to their platform that invite parents to be lax in this regard. UA-cam kids is a notorious example, as it lures parents into a false sense of security in letting their children use a disgusting platform, insinuating that they will take care of filtering content for their children, allowing the parent to put off their duties in teaching internet etiquette. Parents who over-monitor their children can sometimes create an Orwellian nightmare with tech in their homes, micromanaging their children's devices INSTEAD of teaching them to use technology responsibly. I have seen many children rendered dependent upon their parents, and I can only imagine either the hardship they will face in becoming an adult or the dependency they will forever have upon someone else. I believe it also ingrains in new generations a sense of complacency in having little to no privacy, and I worry about what that could do to consumer decisions in the future regarding the use of tech and democratic government. Finally, children must grow up, and my largest grievance is with parents who ignore this and have a 17 year old still being monitored constantly instead of managing themselves.
@@danke1150 nah, parents like that are mostly crazy and cant trust their childs, theres people who are restricted like that even when your an adult already.

Despite Discord can have somes positive points like meeting new people arround the world into a servers and be friends with somes of them for have somes common points who made them similar to yourself for liked this or that, sadly, Discord can have somes negative points as well. Sometimes I end up to discover somes bad servers which it filled of toxicity and drama or too much kids in it and, sometimes, it don't go well. I even remember a story that one of my friend told me about one of his contact with who he has worked as a partnership for modeling who getting harassed and recieve somes death treat because he was on a Splatoon Discord server and, in his profil, it was writtend he do any fan art in exchange of commission. So one day someone have request him a commission for a Splatoon fan art so the contact of my friend have accept it and started to work on it and, sometimes, they was talking each others for know each other better since it was the kid who wanted to know more about the guy by ask him his age, since how much time he do fan art and more despite the guy was careless about the kid but still answer him without feel anything toward him. Sadly, things go very wrong for his contact because the kid who request a Splatoon fan art request was show off on the Splatoon server by say his own age and be friend with someone more old than him and some others stuff like they are close friends so the people from the servers end up very mad to the guy because they call him pedophile just for talking with a kid despite he be more old. Despite the contact of my friend try to explain the misunderstanding and that he had done nothing wrong, people on the server didn't want to listen anything and keep harasse him and throw death treat to him and on his other account from others site beside Discord so, one day, he just disappear from Steam for good so my friend was working on the modeling project alone just because people can be toxic and, if his contact claim he is not a pedophile, then he should have no kids picture on his computer or in the private discussion. So I think there should be 2 different Discord site: -Discord for Kid which it the same Discord we use but, like it say, only kid people can go here so if you are more old than the age limit, the site not allow you to enter in it. -Discord for Adult which it's the same Discord we use but everyone can go here except kid who get blocked and not allowed to enter as long they don't reach the age limit for they can unlock Discord for Adult. I know people could still cheating by add false informations about themself for reach both site by create fake account but, at least, it would be reduce the issue with kids people and toxicity in servers. Even if I'm a adult, it don't made me laught that, everytime when I'm on a video game server (whatever the kind of video game with weapons or no weapons) and when I though I have found someone similar to me for like similar stuff or be mainly agreed on somes points, it happens when I control the person who can become a potential new friend that I just meet, it's just a kid so our conversation stop here because, as a person who have a handicap, I looking for somes friends who can be similar to me and have arround my age since people say it weird that a adult can be friend with a kid so that why I avoid all kid people on Discord. Plus I don't forget that, sometimes, I meet somes toxic racist people in somes servers with somes who don't like handicap people because they think themself they are better than anyone else and see my kind as weak so it easy for them to say bad stuff like I'm a scam or a bot due to my way of speaking due to my handicap or that I'm a pedophile just because I enjoy playing a video game who are just for kid but, I'm sorry, video game aren't only just for kid because we can say exactly the same of Pokemon with people who claim it's a video game for kid and yet there are adult people who still play it (and I even heard one time someone who have 56 years old still play Pokemon despite be a so called kid video game) and even somes adult UA-camr who talk about Pokemon stuff so it's not because they play and enjoy Pokemon that it made them pedophile. So yeah, as I say, the main problem on Discord are kid with toxicity and drama who ruin it but there are still some positive points since everyone isn't bad or toxic as we can meet some good people and it happens I was able to found the right people who filled all the case of what kind of friend I looking for so a adult one, no kid, enjoy similar stuff like me and be friendly and understand me so Discord can be a great place to go but only if you are lucky for not end up in the wrong server and with the wrong people.
Wait a minute I just realized my dad uses discord He is an absolute anti-tech and all he will see is "hey you can spy on your child now" Hes an absolute controle freak, meaning he will definitly use this Cant wait for the "accept the request or youre grounded"
if that does happen, abandon the connected account and make a new one, or if you still have time - make a new one and connect the new one, leaving your main intact
Honestly the most they should do with it is just to flag certain words in messages the kid or whoever they’re talking to sends. I know you can always use special symbols and stuff but it’s better than whatever they’re doing
I had no idea about those code words to find servers- that is disgusting. Omg, you are right.. this update isnt gonna be good for toxic relationships.. yikes
Right, it's just helicopter parenting. It will eventually not get you anywhere, it won't help anyone, and it will irreversibly affect how your child perceives you. Having a trusting relationship and a strong bond is the only way to go. You can't sell that though, so discord family center is the second best option I guess
This feels like the thing that happened with Mojang to create the Minecraft chat filter: some company or online safety organization may be pushing Discord into implementing this
The biggest flaw about not being able to see the messages but being able to see what servers we are in is that the parents can join the server and search for the messages sent by the kid account
@Rød sol When you get into a relationship like that it's hard to escape it and they don't show the red flags until after the relationship starts. Plus I was terrified they would cause more harm to me or worse, my family over the breakup
Bruh I can bet my soul half the "teens" on discord haven't even told their parents about having an account, let alone add them to this "useful feature" 💀💀
Parental controls could be nice as I've joined a few public servers and it deeply concerned me the amount of people openly admiting to being way too young to be there. The problem of course is how much parental control is too much or too little to actually protect kids.
@@greenytoaster If you think deeper about the topic you'd realize that your solution is more like a bandaid and doesn't actually solve the problem. That's becuase it only works on the ones dumb enough to admit to their age, which while useful, doesn't stop the ones who keep quite about their real age. Some sort of parental control when done right would greatly reduce the risk of these kids ending up in places where they shouldn't be.
@@PopeMical true but your solution is also more like a bandaid considering how parents shouldn't even let such young kids wander about on the internet in the first place
@@greenytoaster I mean that's just the solution to every problem on the internet with kids, parents actually doing a good job parenting, so it feels a bit pointless to bring it up as an argument against parental controls. Plus parental controls when done correctly are a great tool to help with that, and there can be valid reasons for a kid to have a discord account. It's just when they have unrestricted access to all of discord that it's a problem and that's exactly where parental controls could be useful.
Something i just realised while watching this is that the inverse is also true Parents could see things like parental control and say "oh my child is safe then, i will let my 9 year old children have discord then" when: A) is against TOS and B) no, no the fuck it isnt. Just like you mentionned, discord is extremely malware heavy so that's probably the last thing you want on your phone
The biggest issue I see with this is.. what teen is gonna tell their parent "oh mom they added a new option to discord and I know you care about my safety so here!" And I feel like if there's a parent that's already on Discord, they'd know the cesspit that Discord is and just.. not let their kid have it. Or accept the consequences that follow. "Son, do you know, once you enter there's no going back?"
I've reached out to Disboard before due them not removing a server that had CP. They do not remove those servers unless the listing directly violates their website rules. Their reasoning was that they had multiple accounts banned by joining the servers to confirm the report. Therefore, they only remove the listings if it directly states things in the listing, regardless of the content in the server. It is up to Discord to remove the server. Meanwhile, Disboard continues to facilitate access to those servers.
Genuine question, what are YOUR thoughts and ideas to possibly make Discord better and safer overall? Obviously most likely impossible to neutralize 100% of risk but what would you do to try to help make the platform safer if given the chance?
Spend more resources on server moderation (I mean have people hired by discord that constantly looks for new keywords used by bad servers and shut them down), encourage reports and increase the staff looking through the reports, make bots that automatically shut down bad servers, make it so that you can be banned from making servers if you were or are the owner of a bad server that got shut down, and make all alt accounts linked in some way so that you can’t bypass bans as easily (basically if you get server hosting privileges taken away it would take them from all current and future alt accounts), etc. Bad news is that all of that isn’t profitable so they will probably not do it
Imean to be frank, kids shouldn't be monitored like this to begin with, even by their parents. Instead they should be educated by their parents about the risks involved and reminders to be cautious. But that's asking parents to do their jobs and allow their kids to learn instead of blindly following orders, or asking parents to participate in their kids activities to get their own understanding of how it works without being invasive.. so we know that'll never happen.
If I was them,I don't think I would've even told my parents about Discord because who the hell is that stupid to tell their parents that they're talking to strangers. Only if the parents found out themselves but I bet it's hard for them to keep up with the apps nowdays.

Actually COPPA is fulfilling a good role It's the companies' reactionary decisions that affect the platform, cuz they get a say in the matter of how it gets handled
For that person scrolling through the internet wanting to know how to bypass the Verizon app it’s easy Step1 Go to settings Step2 Cellular data Step3 click the slider on the app You are now free to use your phone on service without them knowing what you’re on
As someone with parents who have too many things on my phone, I liked discord as a way to actually have a breathe of fresh air (which barely was considering there’s nothing interesting on the damn app,) and all the sudden Discord takes that away too!!
Discord does automatically flag content that is uploaded to Discord as noted in this article: discord.com/blog/discord-transparency-report-q4-2022#heading-5
And while I do genuinely believe that the vast majority of my audience clearly know how disgusting this content is, there is a non-zero chance that a viewer out of the 750k+ views is a creep.
Oh
thank you
I guess iykyk means if you know you know.

literally every single kid does that whenever they sign up or visit a site, i was making my age higher on websites even when i was literally 8-9
@LeafBoi you do not have to verify a single thing at all to go on nsfw channels, you only need a phone number and an email so you can create a discord account and then you have full unrestricted access to discord
when you try to access a nsfw channel it just warns you "this channel is marked as age-restricted" and has a continue and cancel button, thats it
thing is, you dont even need to mark channels as nsfw, its an OPTIONAL thing, you can post whatever images or say whatever words you want and it wont be censored or anything
@LeafBoi nope, I have a few discord accounts and a couple are new, and I joined some servers on them, and all I need to do on any of my accounts is just click “continue” when it comes up with the “this channel has been marked as nsfw” warning and boom, I’m in
In fact, almost every single porn website ever made has the same amount of restriction, just a little warning that says “are you 18 or over?” with a yes or no option and boom, kids can just lie and click the yes option and see porn extremely easily.
@LeafBoi Some servers that involve NSFW content may do that but most of them don't. The ones that ask for your ID are often not a good place to be in anyway

Yeah no one time my dad tried controlling my Discord usage by seizing control of my account using sheer verbal force (screaming, lot's of screaming, it's genuinely terrifying, and you DO NOT attempt to resist or else actual bad things will happen)
He changed the password to something else, and told me that I was to ask him for the login everytime I wanted to go on Discord, and I was to log out every evening.
However I had keylogged my computer as he entered his password, so then I knew what it was, and could therefore still use Discord whenever I wanted, although to not give things away, I always made sure to ask him to sign me back in periodically
This dragged on for a few months, before I had accidently gone on way too long without asking my dad to log in, he asked me about it, and I gave him the truth, which was that I had been logged in entire time (however I didn't mention the keylogging), and it was there that he wrote down his password on a sticky note, slammed it down in front of me, and stormed off in rage.
And making your kid unwilling to talk about that stuff makes them unwilling to talk to you about the guy online who they occasionally feel is a bit uncomfortable to talk to but always makes it up to them with fun games and by listening to their problems at home and giving them advice...

this feature COULD be used in a moderate, safe manner, but most parents who would use this feature like normal, responsible people usually already trust their teens enough to be smart online. what this will be used for is isolating the kids and teens on discord who live in toxic households, who now can no longer safely exist in support groups where they can get help or at the very least someone to talk to when their parents treat them like shit. i fear especially for lgbtq+ youth in homophobic and transphobic households, who no longer can rely on discord as a safe space, because their parents will then find out about that friend of theirs has a pride flag in their profile picture, or that theyre in a lgbtq+ related server, and then get screamed at, hit, or even killed for "associating with the wrong crowd".

Everyone wants to have kids, but nobody wants to be a parent, nowadays
That's what a parent is supposed to do, a child shouldn't have free reign over the internet.

So I think there should be 2 different Discord site:
-Discord for Kid which it the same Discord we use but, like it say, only kid people can go here so if you are more old than the age limit, the site not allow you to enter in it.

I just realized my dad uses discord
He is an absolute anti-tech and all he will see is "hey you can spy on your child now"
Hes an absolute controle freak, meaning he will definitly use this
Cant wait for the "accept the request or youre grounded"
if that does happen, abandon the connected account and make a new one, or if you still have time - make a new one and connect the new one, leaving your main intact
Or use a Alt for the family
make a alt and say its your main and never let em know about your alt

Definitely interesting to see what Di$cord is working on instead of fixing their embeds which are broken for like 2 months now.
Honestly the most they should do with it is just to flag certain words in messages the kid or whoever they’re talking to sends. I know you can always use special symbols and stuff but it’s better than whatever they’re doing

Right, it's just helicopter parenting. It will eventually not get you anywhere, it won't help anyone, and it will irreversibly affect how your child perceives you. Having a trusting relationship and a strong bond is the only way to go. You can't sell that though, so discord family center is the second best option I guess
This feels like the thing that happened with Mojang to create the Minecraft chat filter: some company or online safety organization may be pushing Discord into implementing this
Who could do it? Discord is fully independent.
@@KristinaMoment investors mans literally said it in the video
that would be the end of discord, the entire point is freely being able to speak
The biggest flaw about not being able to see the messages but being able to see what servers we are in is that the parents can join the server and search for the messages sent by the kid account

Bruh I can bet my soul half the "teens" on discord haven't even told their parents about having an account, let alone add them to this "useful feature" 💀💀
Parental controls could be nice as I've joined a few public servers and it deeply concerned me the amount of people openly admiting to being way too young to be there.
The problem of course is how much parental control is too much or too little to actually protect kids.
yknow, there's a better way to fix people being way too young to be in specific servers that doesn't involve parental control:
...reporting
@@greenytoaster If you think deeper about the topic you'd realize that your solution is more like a bandaid and doesn't actually solve the problem.
That's becuase it only works on the ones dumb enough to admit to their age, which while useful, doesn't stop the ones who keep quite about their real age.
Some sort of parental control when done right would greatly reduce the risk of these kids ending up in places where they shouldn't be.
@@PopeMical true
but your solution is also more like a bandaid considering how parents shouldn't even let such young kids wander about on the internet in the first place
@@PopeMical yeah but like you said, they need to be done correctly
these silly ahh smooches at the end made me giggle so hard i slipped onto the sub button and i'm not removing it anymore
Something i just realised while watching this is that the inverse is also true
Parents could see things like parental control and say "oh my child is safe then, i will let my 9 year old children have discord then" when:
A) is against TOS
and B) no, no the fuck it isnt. Just like you mentionned, discord is extremely malware heavy so that's probably the last thing you want on your phone
the fact that helicopter parents can take basically nothing and spiral it into shit like "my son joined isis via discord"
The biggest issue I see with this is.. what teen is gonna tell their parent "oh mom they added a new option to discord and I know you care about my safety so here!"
And I feel like if there's a parent that's already on Discord, they'd know the cesspit that Discord is and just.. not let their kid have it.
My old account was actually banned after I reported a CP server, probably because I didn't know better to immediately leave the server.
Bad news is that all of that isn’t profitable so they will probably not do it
Not adding features like hiding the contents of links.
Imean to be frank, kids shouldn't be monitored like this to begin with, even by their parents. Instead they should be educated by their parents about the risks involved and reminders to be cautious. But that's asking parents to do their jobs and allow their kids to learn instead of blindly following orders, or asking parents to participate in their kids activities to get their own understanding of how it works without being invasive.. so we know that'll never happen.
if my parents start using this feature i'm getting the death sentence bro 💀
If I was them,I don't think I would've even told my parents about Discord because who the hell is that stupid to tell their parents that they're talking to strangers. Only if the parents found out themselves but I bet it's hard for them to keep up with the apps nowdays.
it seems like Disboard removed the IYKYK tag as of now, so thank god they finally did finding out about that was easily the most disgusting thing I've heard in a while
tbh the worse creeps are the parents
sometimes no one can traumotise the kids like them. If we had parental control working in my time, I wiuldnt be alive for sure
The family center solution is like putting a band aid to cure a broken bone, but the band aid is already used so apart from doing nothing it worsens the situation
