    Gabriel great hanging out for dinner tonight and shooting the breeze. The two flyover structures are roadways that come out of that building which is now a parking lot. It's so the old city doesn't get gridlocked with cars. The security guards at the entrances to the Gurudwara are the Khalsa, spiritual soldiers. They'll pat you down (only if they think 🤔 you are suspicious enough or they don't like you) and ask if you're bringing in Alcohol, Drugs or Tobacco which are prohibited within the Gurudwara. Sikhs are pretty cool 😎 people. Quite a good number of Panjabi people are tall around 6 feet to 6 foot 4 inches tall. I'm 6 feet tall and felt like a shorty next to the 6 foot-four dudes 🤣. Keep doing your best 😎🙏🏻.

    The video at 7:30 is the statue of Ranjit Singh, the first maharaja of the Sikh empire. The language is written in Persian because majority of the Sikh empire were in lands where Muslims were the majority and at that time, Persian (due to the Mughals who made Persian the official language) was the lingua Franca or common language for people in northern India to speak. I think it was only when the British defeated the Mughal and Sikh empire that Urdu became the lingua Franca for the Muslims in northern India (which included territories that are now Pakistan)

    Wow, How nice to see @TravelingEddie! His videos in Colombia were very helpful for us when were traveled there in 2021.
    We can't wait to see your next video with the Golden Temple! In July we spent several hours in Delhi's Gurudwara Sri Bangla Sahib (even helped prepare some of the food for the Langar). Whether you are Sikh are not, there is no denying that some of the things they do (giving 10% monetary or time into the gurudwara to help keep the food services free and the medical services at a very low cost) are a great example of how we could all be better human beings.

    Probably the second or third best thing in Poonjab is the food. Did you have the langar at the Golden Temple? Temple food, Prasad, it's the world's largest 24 hrs, 7 days, 365 days operating dinning facility all funded by donations. You have to do Seva and help the temple by doing some temple work. Which is basically helping people. Giving back. Dhaba in Pooja is where it's at. That's where you get the real Poonjab food. Camera permitted except inside the Golden Temple.

      @@ericasteeleit's world wide, a Sikh Temple if it has a kitchen will be providing free food to everyone. They belive in serve all. The same applies to Hare Krishna, ISCON. They often offer free food, some locations offer food for a small donation. And neither one is trying to convert you, though some Hare Krishna people can be pushy.

    I know you're kind of ballin' now but how would you say prices in India have changed since covid? I hope the 80 cent thalis havent been nerfed, and I wonder what Om restaurant (100 NPR dhal bhat of course with enormous refill) in Katmandu city is charging these days.
    I was there in 2017/2018 and can't wait to go back despite being preoccupied with biking absurdly far in latin America

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  8 місяців тому +1

      I don't think they've changed much since Covid. Prices are definitely up in general, for example the thali I showed at the beginning was 450 rupees. But the exchange rate against the US dollar is more favorable, currently 83 rupees. So overall things are really reasonable, especially after coming from Europe. I have a decent room with double bed and attached bathroom for $12, can't complain about that. And if you really want to stretch the rupees you can find cheaper rooms and super cheap street food.

    The big monument you saw was of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Sikh Warrior King of Punjab (Reign-1799-1839). Present day Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Pakistan were also part of his Kingdom. British maintained good relation with him as he was too powerful for them, after his death in 1839, British occupied North West India (Punjab) in 1849 after 2nd Anglo Sikh war.
