What on earth is Slivovitz? And should you drink it?

- At the Dr and Chef we are prepared to put our bodies (and taste buds) on the line to try "weird and wonderful" drinks from around the world.... and so a friend of our show encouraged us to review Slivovitz..... which we had previously not encountered.
This required a bit of digging to find out what this was about. Slivivitz is a "white" spirit that borrows its name from a shared Slavic word for plum or (more specifically) for damson plum. I like Plums so sounds like a good idea for a drink surely!
Apparently Slivovitz has been distilled by monks in Bulgaria since the 14th century..... which makes you wonder, I suppose, whether being a "man of god" was more about getting poleaxed on alcohol! Because this spirit is strong!
Anyway, make sure you watch this episode of the Dr and the Chef to see our reaction and appraisal of two different brands of Slivovitz....and whether you should give it s crack!
Wrong glass. Thas is not how we drink šljivovica 😂
WE POUR IT DOWN STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE
@@nikoniss in my town we drink it from our barrles
@@Poglavnik088 I drink it chilled from shot glasses.
We drink it from the bottle
Welcome to the Balkans, the thing which unites Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia. Trying this drink out at age 7.
Every good Slav father and grandfather gives their kids the stuff to warm them up!
You think that's bad, try 'domáce' Slivovica! That's the homemade stuff and is stronger. On the plus side, you'll never get ill drinking it. We drink Domáce all winter at home (and summer, spring and autumn...)
Bought slivovica is always terrible experience even from Jelínek. The best slivovica is homemade one but of course, not every homemade slivovica is good (depends on guy who's preparing it).
Ya the real stuff is colourless like Vodka, its basically moonshine.
Da da domaća šljivovica je zakon!
I can only get ahold of bistra, good stuff but I'm sure home made is another world
@@Darcstarr ye but homemade stuff is really good i mean hight quality alkohol not some shit form some ashole,,,..Best i home made Slivovica means Plump brandy have stay 2 years before drink then taste beter ,,,Or Aple brandy ...jablkovica is amazing ...i new one guy he made homemade Snaps from Red current ,,,,Redcureent Brandy amazing ...taste is impresive...or we made home made whiskey too without colour is pure and cleers so as moonshine..
Actualy the best rakija is in serbia and other neighboard countries.
100% right Aleksandar... I am from south of Montenegro ,its like the drink here.. I also love scotch ,but...
Try Bulgarian rakia
Шта прииичаш будало
Croatian rakija is best
@@Poglavnik088 optimist xD
NASA and F1 use it for fuel
And to clean up old machines 😁
U throw a match on it, it burns
slivovica is not wine - wrong glasses ...you may drink it from the bottle as well since you cant pick the right sized shooters ! Good Slivovica got always a clear color !!!...and how to tell if its a good one ? - simple.... it leaves no burning sensation going down your throat but it has a very distinctive taste on you tongue and palate - so thats it you two experts lol :D
lol
they just tasted it and they are already drunken :-D
hhahahahhahahh
Man, the one that is bought in store is still weak, the homemade one is about 80-90% and that is realy strong.
@@dazny9381 Why would someone drink hand disinfection? :-D
@@Pidalin Because most of people in southeast and eastern europe drink like crazy and this is easiest and cheapest to make xdd
from ...SERBIA....
from ...BULGARIA.... originally ;)
Piće južnih slavena
I tried it once ,it cured my bad sinuses.
our national drink. VERY STRONG :DD
Not really strong ,one of the least strong spirits :) try Krusku or Jabukovacu :D
In Bulgaria we drink Slivova rakia from the bottle :D
Its recognized by the EU from 2007 onwards as a Serbian brand, Šljivovica is serbian national drink, plums are serbian national fruit, and serbia is the 5th producer of plums in the WORLD, with fertile land just the size of new york.
So when you drink šljivovica, or anglicised slivovitza, youshould drink a one from Serbia, namely the Žuta Osa ( Yellow Wasp), its exported to more than 50 countries , and i believe UK, Australia, north america are in those countries
hm ok i did not know that i have to ask around for this. Is it available in slovakia perhaps ?
@@jaroslavbrada7669 of course. One of the most popular alcoholic beverages here
@@doomsday2_ I always thought of you guys that you are beer drinkers (like myself). I am pleasantly surprised that you have rakiya as well.
@@ivanpetrov5185 we drink literally everything that is drinkable, often even if it's not :D
Śliwowica Łącka w Polsce od 17 wieku.
Yes if you put a match to it, it will burn whit a blue satisfying flame xD
Bruh they are drinking it from wine glass XD.
Hahhaha 😆 If they drink it like wine they will be wasted after 1 glass
Almost felt racist 😂😂
The only alcohol that puts me in a good mood. I only drink this.
U will find SLIVOVITZA ( aka plum spirit) in MANY east European countries…. States of former Yugoslavia , Czech and Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania , Poland and Moldova etc. It’s a traditional alcoholic drink in those regions. Like tequila in Mexico🤷🏻♂️ just my 2 cents….
"ooooh! that's horrible" what a schlub!
I may be wrong, but my opinion is, that really good slivovice doesn´t get to shops. It is used internally by people making it, gifted to friends or sold to people around you.
I drink rakiya, ouzo, vodka, wine and beer that's all. My favorite is rakiya though. Even it's good for you one shot 50ml relaxes you and clears your sinuses also increases appetite and helps with digestion.
Indeed
They say, slivovitz counts as variation of rakiya, isn't it?
@@seksualusis This is pure rakiya. It's just seeming that Czechs and Slovaks don't have unified name for their rakiya. In Bulgaria we call it Plum rakiya, or Grape rakiya, or Pear rakiya and so on and so forth. The Czechs and Slovaks name the rakiya based on the fruit. Slivovitz means plum rakiya. the Serbs call it Slivovitza as well by the way. At the beginning of the video, I thought that these guys were trying Serbian rakiya.
@@ivanpetrov5185 Thanks a lot, I get rakiya term much better, perhaps - this, meaning distillate, but what in particular is generalization for the "Serbian rakiya"?
P.S. Cut your ties with the alco, recommended.
@@seksualusis The generalization for the "Serbian rakiya" comes from the fact that these guys claim that they invented the rakiya. On top of that they brand their rakiyas in Latin alphabet. So, I was pretty sure that was a Serbian rakiya.
yes you can set it on fire, thats actually how we test it while distilling. the alcohol percentage drops while distilling, and when it gets low enough that you cant set it on fire anymore, we stop the process
one of my favorites ! lmao ! unfortunately it`s been rather hard to find the last 3 years !
Love it, drunk guys on camera drinking Plum Brandy
Guys, alsways try homemade Rakija from the Balkans.
Sljivovic brother, When we come back from Bosnia to Holland 15 ltr goes with us :)
hahahahahaha that face we all get brother after taking 2 sips :P you had me laughing there so much 3:00
Chef add this to a mulled wine or a warm punch it comes alive ment to be drank in this fashion due to its high oil content add about 1 oz to 6 oz of warm spiced wine completely changes the character i promise you'll love it
We will have to give it a go!
@@thedrandthechef8524 What you need to try is homemade Serbian Rakija. . Commercially bottled Slivovitz is disgusting. You are drinking the equivalent of a cheap bottle of whisky, rather than a fine single malt.
Když nevíš jak se pije je to zlé. Aa čuchat ji taky není nejlepší 😂
napiš raději anglicky ať se nezabijou :DD
Potrebujú piť domáce z dediny!
@@Adam-wl8wn
Pravda, takové sú nejlepší.
@Adam smith @Bene Hello my moravia brothers xD
Yo that shit is legit. I just got a bottle of it haven't even opened it yet and I'm high as fuck lol
red bull gives you wings, rakija gives you 4x4 drive
Grow up . good slivovitz is master craftmanship! the best drunkhug from Sweden!
Checkoslovakia doesn't exist anymore... and Shlivovitz is Serbian word Šljivovica from Šljiva which means plum. There are two types of this brandy. Meka - which means Soft (~22.5% of alcohol ) and Prepecenica - lets translate it as Overfryed (45% vol). And yes you can make plum brandy anywhere but Šljivovica only in Serbia. Even Faith No More bass player imports it from Serbia to USA. Check out his Yebiga brand..
Slivka is plum in Moravian accent, too
@@Kilinho98 In Macedonia we call it sliva and the brandy is called Shlivka. Always double baked (over 45 degrees). Also I know many people who add small % of pears in the mix for taste and it has to be aged in barrels.
Very strong :D but good drink guys
This is truly the nectar of the Gods
Good drink I like it
drink it and don't stop
Only real man drink Rakija (šljivovica)
Basicky same thing :D
Love it on ice.
Sooo clumsy ... but simpathetic... Шљивовица , or Slivovitz is , naturally , the best where is the best region for the Plums is. Strange local though. Few islands of Japan , Thaiwan , Cuba , US-Canada around great lakes ... and Balcan. South from Belgrade , edge of Romania , west Bulgaria some of Greece , Macedonia , Montenegro mayube , Bosnia , and east Croatia... The best , and original , is from Serbia , "Жута оса" or yellow wasp ... one of two official drinks in that categorry for the Emperror of Japan.
Neither of those are made of plums. It's all synthetic. To get a taste of the good stuff, you need to buy homemade slivovica.
and thats just the bought one, homemade one is the best
Good with beer like a break ;)
Was it 50? 52? 70? What were you doing here?
U guys talk to much, I got a wife for that
I love Slivovitz
you made the mistake of buying BOTTLED sljivovica. No one buys is bottled. You are only supposed to buy it home brewed. The bottled shit is disgusting.
Strong stuff aint It ??
Hell yeah
Here in Moravia, we give this to newborns just to get used to it.
Bulgaria and Serbia most commonly for anyone wondering
First wrong glasses.
Second drink it in one shot, its not wine its Šljivovica.
Yess, itis horrible but give memorrreeee!!!
its harsh, easier than straight vodka tho
When you drink Slivovitz I recommend this song: ua-cam.com/video/g3sJB2tcoJY/v-deo.html
well iam from Czech Republic :D quite sad to see this but i can understand. But i hope you wll try homemade slivovice once :) Its rly big difference. Also you are using wrong glasses for this. Its ruining aftertaste a little.
Šljivovica is brandy from plum and 100 time beter than whiskey.
Fun fact its notnSlivovitz its Šljivovica
Its a pigs testicle or elephants 🤣😂 Slivovice is the best 👌
Also, Bulgaria is NOT close by....
50%? You gotta step up your game. 50% is a juice for rakija. 75% or not worth the money.
Šljivovica*
I saw Champaign glasses in the thumbnail but I opened the video just to say I'm not going to watch it due to the fact that they didn't do enough research.
Whats that store bought garbage??Try the homemade stuff.
With this you became men :) congratulations
Very funny video lads :D
But Rakia ( slivovitza is just a sub-base if i may say so) is firstly made in Bulgaria there was a recent finding to prove it and as a part of the eastern parts of Europa we drink Rakia all the time and much stronger than what you can buy from shops/bars etc. but if plum is to hard on you try peach rakia its more smooth
again great video guys :)
We will give the peach version a go... keep an eye out then
Ne seri bre!
Serbs aren't world number one at much, but they make the best Rakija. It's not even close..
What lol rakija is an Arab drink
Weak weak weak, that is good stuff ffs
Fruity drink
Made in Serbia
These guys sniffed it and went drunk lul
And btw rakia originated in Balkans
Romanian țuică !!!!!
Czechs and slovaks can't make a good sljivovica.
They don't have enough sun and their fruit is not sweat enough.
South serbian Slivovica, North macedonia has the best.
Slivovice from shop tastes like licking tires.. DO NOT BUY/DRINK THAT!
They so weak😂😂😂😂
All central/eastern european countries produce some kinds of Sliwowica. I don't like this alcohol. Vodka is better.
Šljivovica is Serbian...
Wasting my time babbling with no information
