Put string dampers on it and the string won't vibrate. Also heavier arrows, hand shock solved . Adjust brace height too. I had several bows with horrible hand shock and this method eliminated it.

Great review Kramer! My best longbow was a 72" solid wood bow made of yellow locust. Smooth pull, not much stacking and very little handshock. It was a beauty!

By far my favorite series I have and actively shoot with a few of the bows you have shown in this series... I am usually on a budget but love this art of archery and thank you for making videos like this ! I am self taught and learn basically strictly from UA-cam there is no help or stores near me so this is where my school is. Thank you for your videos -darkarrowarcher

Kramer, thanks for the videos. I love your light hearted approach - it keeps me coming back. I bought a 45lbs Pioneer and have been really satisfied with it. That could be because I don't have a lot of experience with other bows (the only other trad bow I have is an old 35 lbs Browning recurve, which I've been shooting a long time). But my SAS is consistent shooting and I don't notice much hand shock at all - especially with string silencers. It definitely doesn't vibrate like the one in your video, and it is extremely quite compared to my recurve. I bought mine because I wanted to get into bow hunting but didn't want to break the bank, given I was just starting out. So far I've killed rabbits, squirrels, and as of this season my first deer. So its really accomplished everything I could have asked of it. The handle did take some getting used to but it fits like a glove now. The only things I don't like about the bow is the big white logo on the back (because it makes it easier for game to spot movement) and I feel like the grooves for the strings have a sharp edge that rubs the string every time I string/unstring it.

I bought one these bows this past summer. I was a bit disappointed in a few things, but most were easily addressed with a bit of tweaking. Like you, I found the hand shock, well, shocking. Three small alterations fixed a good deal of this: 1. The leather grip has the raw hide facing out, letting the smooth leather slip and slide on the handle. The solution is to take the handle off and re-install it smooth side out. Or better yet, make a totally brand new one from an old scrap of leather. It took me about 15 minutes to make one. 2. The string seemed too short for the bow. I had completely untwisted the string and I still had too much brace height. A new flemmish string gave me a brace height I could dial in and it did away with some of the twang. 3. Beaver balls was the last thing I did. I know they slow the bow down, but I'm only using this one in the back yard, so I don't care about achieving mach 1, here. While it was annoying to have to deal with these issues, you have to keep in mind what you can actually get for for a hundred eighty bucks, these days. So for me at least, the smile quotient is pretty high. Thanks for doing these. I know very well how much effort goes into to making even a short video. Keep 'em flyin', Brother. Tom

My best friend bought one a couple years ago, and it was an overall disappointment. We spent an afternoon together shooting the week after he got it, and he already played around with it and tweaked some new things, including a new flemish 8125 string and some beavers on the string. I still thought it was too loud and vibrated too much, although he said that it was better than it was before. While you are correct..you only get so much quality for $180 bucks..if you are looking for a nice entry level bow, there are definitely bows out there under the $200 mark, and right around the $200 mark, that really are excellent quality bows that are so much better than the Pioneer. You can most certainly find something MUCH better than the Pioneer for $180 bucks.

I have this same bow in 55 lbs, While I would also rate it as below average in terms of comfort due to the hand shock- adding some beaver balls string silencers made a world of difference. Comparing it to a Samick sage, which I would rate maybe an 8 in terms of comfort, adding string silencers brought the SAS Pioneer from a 3 to a 5 or 6 for me- and made the bow nearly silent (quieter than the Sage with the same string silencers).

    • @michami135
      @michami135 3 роки тому

I have this bow as well. I've only shot it for a couple days, but I never felt any hand shock. I did just now "twang" the string, and yes, it goes on a while, but like OP says, it could be silenced easily enough.
I personally think the grip is comfortable in my large hands.
Now my regular bow is an ILF Olympic style bow, which is held a little differently than a longbow, so that might affect how it feels to me.

I just got my SAS Pioneer... less than a week now. (also 40#) So far I'm not at all disappointed. I have large hands with pretty hefty, thick bones, so the grip feels fine. I put the provided string on shot several dozen arrows, then left it strung overnight to stretch it out... Then put it in my tackle box and added a Flemish Twist string and a pair of otter balls. That makes a world of difference. I haven't had any problem with the leather grip moving yet. I have only been playing archery for about 3 months. But from the beginning I don't use a gorilla grip. I use what I call a T'ai Chi grip... I can grab someone's wrist and it just feels like a gentle caress, but, if they try to pull away, it's like a Chinese finger trap. If I do develop a problem with grip movement, a wee bit of rubber cement should keep it in place.

Thanks for the review. The black hunter that you reviewed was probably 60” with a longer riser then this SAS which is 68” and probably has longer limbs and a shorter riser. Simply by design, you will have more hand shock and far less speed. 40# of draw weight on a 60” bow is a far better balance, speed and performance formula then 40# on a 68” bow. Just simple physics and bow geometry. I’m a lifelong shooter and I probably shouldn’t even add my two cents to this chain as I have a 34” draw length and tend to blow up bows. Some bowyers, send me bows just to test their product and others avoid me like the plague. 🤣🤣 Thanks for the review

Hey Kramer, I know it's an older video, but I just got this bow (same bow but branded Western Recreation Frontier) and a few things made this bow a whole lot better. First, a new string and tuning in brace height is a must. Second, string silencers help a lot with dampening vibration. Third and final, I found an 11 grain per pound arrow takes out any excessive hand shock. It's a very light bow, so a heavier arrow makes up for it. So with those three things, this thing is a whole lot more comfortable and almost impossible to hear shot standing 3 yards away. I has become one of my favorite bows.

Sorry, I'd also like to add that I completely agree the leather wrap is essentially garbage as it is shipped. I took off the leather handle wrap and added a black grip tape wrap (that you would use for a bat or hockey stick). The leather should have been either glued down or stitched a while lot better/tighter.

New subscriber here, interesting seeing your bow reviews, thanks. I own a number of bows, recurve and longbows and purchased what looks like virtually the identical bow although mine is a #45 Frontier (Cabelas brand?) and I've been happy with the way it shoots since I brought it home. First thing home I made a B55 Flemish twist for it and she is a smooth and quiet shooter, the leather on the handle did slip some but I fixed that, the speed seems adequate, I normally shoot aluminum Easton XX75s. Maybe weight difference causing the different results?

  • @heikogrullich7749
    @heikogrullich7749 3 роки тому

HI, thank you for the nice video.
You have certainly used the recommended stand height?
If you raise the bracehigh to 7 1/4" and use large wool silencers, you can get out of the bow really comfortably.
But the arrows should still be relatively heavy (10grain per pound).
With this bow you have to experiment a bit with the setup, but you can make a good "workhorse" out of it.
These are at least my experiences with it ;-)

Hey Kramer, I love your videos. You are a master craftsman and a very good teacher. I love your positivity! I decided for some unknown reason that I wanted to make a bow. It was about 7 years ago. I'm semi retired now, and I finally have time. My first bow snapped, it was my fault. I'm currently on my second one. I'm a short old lady, so your 64 inch red oak build is a perfect choice for a longbow for me. I have an idea, or a question; is it possible to make a riser and have bow limbs that you can take off and exchange for some different limbs? For example, I kind of have an idea to make longbow limbs, but I'm kind of a weak pull person, so I figured a recurve would be a better fit for me, (power wise that is). I thought about designing a riser that you could exchange the limbs on. Any thoughts?

I only have a couple of different arrow types (wood/carbon - also Sinoart) but performance wise it's been great, really no complaints, I even bought a second set of limbs in a heavier poundage. If I had to pick a negative I would say that it looks a little boring with its all dark color scheme. Yes a different bow, but my experience so far suggest that Sinoart makes pretty decent quality. -Cheers

Two things about vibration, first you need a good string....try a good Low stretch versus the string that cae with it. I have a friend who has one and loves it...not much vibration at all and he has a 452 string on it. And comparing it to the Black Hunter, which is a hybrid takedown which is built more for performance and a completely different disign is not a fair comparison. 172 fps is actually very good for a deflex/reflex longbow such as that one. Compare it to another 40#,, 68", d/r longbow....rather than a different design bow.

Could the vibration just be due to using an arrow that's too light? At least in theory, if you used a heavier arrow, I'd think there'd be less energy transferred to the bow when you shoot, and thus less vibration.

Typical is 8"/200 mm. I have mine so there is about 1 inch above the top finger and only an inch or two below the lower finger. But you have to know how to really secure them. I gain a little speed, but the 8 inch is probably better for accuracy, since it is that much less likely to ever move.
One thing I don't care about is is wear on the string. I have never had significant wear on the string from my arm. That is why I often run shorter servings.

Ty Pelfrey is a well known string walking archer. He was invited to guest on the Masters of the Barebow video, and that drew so much interest he was in a video exclusively about his string walking, along with Scott A. You can get either of Ty's videos at 3 Rivers, I have no connection.
Ty likes to hunt with his longbow and the bow he uses is basically the Pioneer, though I believe he uses (or used) the Greatree Archery Longbow, which as others have mentioned seems to be the Pioneer.
Ty wrote about his setup for Trad Talk, as follows. But before that, let me say that this is really pushing what a simple bow can do, and is not how most would set up a Hill ish longbow, but it goes to show that even this can work with this bow. I would also just mention that a 9.25" brace height would never occur to me. I use Hill height of around 6.75", but Ty is the guy on string walking.
I don't own the following, and please take it down if you don't want it here.
    "Hey Guys,

I use the largest diameter shaft possible in my spine group. For some reason the larger diameter arrows work best. I'm shooting a 2213 out of my #55 LB.
Noise, yep. I put limb savers on the limbs, added beaver balls to the string, and I shoot my own strings, endless loop BCY Dynaflight 97 16 strands, 19 Halo servings. Why - its the only type of string I know how to make, and the material I used on my FITA set-ups. Seems to work.
Brace Height. I had to play with the brace height, and I went to an upper limit on the bow. My brace is 9.25 inches on a 68" longbow - tinker with the brace for the sweet spot and rights and lefts.
Nock-Sets. Move them around, try it all, don't be shy. But that 25-30 yard flight seems to give you the most for your money when you start sliding the fingers up and down the string.
Tune. My Border bow is cut centershot - Border Bow, and I had the bow custom made and tillered for three under - string walking. But my other longbow 68" is a $139 bow out of F/S Discount - Viper Deluxe, now called something else (see above, edit). I took a belt sander to it, dished out the grip, and ground it a little closer toward center. Both bows shoot the same out to 30meters, then the Border shows the speed and performance. I'm set up about 1.5 inches under the double nock sets for a 30 meter point on with perfect arrow flight.
Canting the bow. Yep - don't know why, but a cant just seems to feel better, and lessens the archer's paradox compounded by the string walking. My buddy noticed the same experience with his stringwalking of his longbow. Maybe there is more hopping up and less out with the downward pressure of the arrow on the shelf. Go figure - just works.
Now I tried wood arrows - forget it - believe me I tried. Out of a dozen premium shaft I could get two or three to group. So I concluded a little aluminum would have to compensate for my lazyness in tuning the wood shafts and spine checking the lumber to match arrows. I have carbons, but they are a little light and hop off the shelf. My aluminum arrows work best with 145g points. I've 5" left-wing with a good twist. G-nocks are holding the arrows on the string.
On a good day the arrows will group in a six inch circle, walking the string, from five meters out to forty meters - On a good day, of course they can use all the area on a 52" butt also when the mental computer has problems! Like any other set-up, calm in the center, good shot execution and a clear mind seem to help more than anything else, and when the shot isn't working - look out! (I believe what he is saying is that the 6" group is the spread from string walking, not the inherent accuracy of the bow, string waking changes the bow's power, which changes the spine, which moves the arrows left/right. But this is just due to his technique, not a characteristic of these bows edit).
There are so many variables: arrow nodes, string weight, draw length, arrow cycle, point weight, bow poundage, finger tab material, nock sets, string silencers... I just through the rig together and made gross changes and minimized the time to tune the bow. Arrows seemed to be the biggest factor, followed by nock sets, then brace height.
There it is - hope I helped. I sure like having the tip of that arrow on the critter at all distances.
    Ty"
I am not pushing these bows, and have no commercial affiliations. My point is just that there are a ton of ways of working a trad bow, and when you get down to it, the bow itself, despite what we want to pretend, is pretty much the least important part of it.

I have the 50# and the hand shock's bad. The bow keep flying out of my hand after every few shot. The leather moves around and the string seems cheap. After putting silencer on, it quite the bow down a lot. Bare shafting, I could not find a good knocking point at all. The arrows always kicked up no matter where I knocked. I found a happy medium and feathered the arrows. I also had trouble shooting the bow accurately. I did measure the draw weight which was 50# at 28 inch draw. Also, the bow is very light, one point something pounds. Overall I would not have purchased this bow again but since I have it, I still shoot it once in a while for shits and giggles.

I have bow same as that just with clear fiberglass and in my country it is named Oak Ridge Aspen. It is sold with several different names all over the world. but all are identical except name on limbs. Bow works as You described out of the box, but! Put good flemish string on it, some string silencers (mine are home made wool silencers), get rid of leather on the handle and it transforms into very smooth shooting light bow that launched arrows with surprising speed for a longbow. It became my favorite and I sold handmade longbow that costed little over 300 $ and kept that (also Aspen costed me just under 130$ new, and any piece of archery stuff here usually costs some 25% more then in USA, from my point of view You were robbed).

I have this bow, and while I agree it's not this most comfortable shooting bow, I don't think it's any worse than any other longbow you'll get at that price range, especially here in Canada. Also my grip is a lot more secure than yours is.

I would expect to have to replace the grip, if for no other reason than I don't put crap leather near my skin. Chinese leather, is notorious for being tanned with god knows what. And doubtless they are not the only country doing that. It's Tandy, or better, for me.

Good critique. Long bows should be more forgiving in the areas where this one was less than stellar. I have a Yew "hand crafted by some unknown bowyer many years ago, longbow/flat bow? around a 55lb. weight. It is actually very smooth. I have a68", 65lb@28". Bill Stewart long bow, very smooth. I get what the review process is, but the title seems inaccurate as what you really seemed to be saying was that you didn't like it in comparison to the other bows. Realistically, other than the BS by which people panicked when Hybrids became super popular, and decided to allow them in some longbow classes, or there wouldn't have been longbow classes, I don't see any other longbows in the review bows at the beginning of the video. So I guess this is the only bow where the string doesn't hit a damper.
No bow purchase, including all my custom bows and ILFs is complete when you get it, though I will admit most longbows come close. But obviously the leather needs to be tossed; the brace height looks too high, and maybe it will continue to need silencers.
But a string that doesn't damp over a recurve is going to keep vibrating, that is not shock. I have only shot one longbow that had really bad shock, and it made me feel like I had been in a bar fight and had some loose teeth. I did have a loose tooth on the left side. And there is nothing wrong with my teeth. It was a Howard Hill bow. I had marveled at similar reports over the years and thought the people had bad oral care, or something. But no, it is a real thing. I have lots of similar bows, but none of them did that. Hill bows are famous for it. I am thinking mostly the older ones.
My point is, some people want the challenge and aesthetics of the longbow, and nobody said is was going to be easy. It shouldn't ruin your teeth. But I think while you identified some shortcomings in the bow, this bow is more different from the mean bows, than the rest of them are and the review seemed less helpful for not having identified that problem. Yes, most people probably don't want this bow. Though Hill ASLs are hard to keep in stock at the moment. They are having one of their regular surges. But people who do want this type of bow will have been mislead by your low ratings.

Speed is definitely important to me in a bow, but if its not a smooth bow, whether drawing it or in the release, and its loud and vibrates too much, then it simply does not feel good to shoot. I dont care how fast its flinging arrows..if it doesnt feel good to shoot, its not worth having. Thats my own personal opinion of course. I would definitely rather a smooth bow than a fast one. There are definitely MUCH better quality bows than the Pioneer out there for $180.

I don't think the standards you set for reviewing and giving score of the bows are not fair or not necessarily correct. You shoot different style bows and judge them with same category
For example, you are comparing Black hunter with this bow.
First, Black hunter is recurve bow. So, obviously that will be much faster than a longbow for same poundage anyway. Second, Black hunter is much shorter bow, 60 inch. Shorter bows shoot faster than longer bow, generally speaking.
This bow is more of a old fasion longbow. Some people will prefer old fasion bows, some will prefer more modern bows.
It's not fair to judge all bows with same standards.
