- SAS Pioneer Longbow review - Thanks for watching! This Longbow is a great shooter and gives you that traditional feel. I think if you are in the market and are new to traditional archery you can forget about the Samick Sage and opt for this much more traditional look and feel for a similar price and be a lot happier.
A big thanks to SAS that provided me with the bow for review. The opinions expressed are my own and based on actual field testing and proof of performance on a 3D course.

Would you just get a Flemish twist string that’s 68”? Or how many inches would the string need to be?
Thanks for the great review--and for your love of archery--and of just having fun with a longbow.
I do love archery!! Are you a longbow guy?
Great video. That's a great looking longbow. It's very quiet. Thanks
I have to say, your enthusiasm made this one of the most watchable shooting reviews I have seen! Subb'd.
Thanks. I was so happy to get this bow.
I love this guys innocence
Great review! I own this same bow and mine is magic too.
Hairy arrow rests get in the way of my aiming so I had to shave the fur off but that was the only problem. My Howard Hill arrows work great with this bow (68", 35# ). I always use fur silencers on the string, top and bottom. I've only shot it about 200 times but it has done everything I expected of a longbow of that length and weight.
Awesome shot with the ball fair play and great review 👍👍
:) thanks.. sometimes I get lucky!
Looks like you had lots of fun👍..longbows rule 🏹🎯
2 years later and I am looking at buying one...would be nicer without their logo on the front though
thank you
This is a happy person and all of us can see that. He dont need a Widow bow to be happy. He's life most be good. Thats great !!!!
As Fred Bear said...." Nothing clear a trobuled mind like shooting a bow ".........
And that its all true. Dont matter what kind or brand bow.
Congratulations man !!!!!!!
It looked like you really enjoyed shooting that bow, great last shot.
Was loving it !
Subbed!! I see dnd books in the back lol archery and dnd. My kind of guy!
Absolutely!!! Love DND .. take a look at my logo
I mostly shoot flemish strings, I used to shoot them on a compound as well! I am only just moving back to a continuous, due to Rod Jenkins advice. But sure they are fun. But with super fibers, not B50. I don't think you will get a different effect on hand shock. Most people are shooting something other than B50, though something like that is probably what this thing comes with. However, if you get a new high end string, it will quite likely hit real hard.
Cool video, you shot it good for a 179.00 bow. Great bow for the price
Thanks!!
Agree on the logo. Otherwise looks like a good shooter.
Nice video :)
Thanks!
Here's a tip for You . Crest Your arrows ( after ) You find the sweet spot in brace height . Put the cresting edge as a BH reference . Now You'll have a fast easy ( checkpoint Charlie ) .
Awesome.
Your arrow weight and size etc?
So this is my opinion of this bow. As the review states, this bow likely has a lot of hand shock. I'm not really feeling it since I hold the bow with a loose grip. Without any real grip on it my hand is not absorbing that shock. I've never needed a finger sling but I may have to get one for this bow. When I shoot, every once in a while, the bow fly out of my hands because of such a loose grip and the shock. I can imagine the shock sucking if you're gripping the bow. Regarding accuracy, this is my first longbow from shooting recurve and compound. I'm shooting more accurate at 20 yards then with my quality recurves. I'm shooting 50# but my 45# recurves seems to have faster arrow flight with the same arrows. The bow is just beautiful, I love how it looks in person. the pictures does not do justice. Bare shaft shooting, I can't seem to get the arrow to not hit my target nock high, no matter where my string nock is. I found a happy medium and let the feather do the rest. My nock settled at 7/16th. My brace height is at 7.25. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and this bow is extremely fun to shoot. Again, this is review is coming from someone who's never shot a longbow before
That’s awesome thanks for sharing I love it !
I'm confused because Krammer ammons said this bow was terrible but it looks pretty good here, idk whether to buy one, I'd rather not spend 400-700 for a nice longbow.
I had this bow in a higher poundage and hated it. I dropped to 40# and it is a much better bow and really well made for the price.
I saw that review as well. He was shooting carbons, tho, right? I think the heavier wood arrows make a difference. He also holds it like a recurve. When you shoot a HH style bow, you're probably better off shooting it like Howard did...
@@MarkJoel1960 I have been watching the manufacturers badmouth the cheap bows and I get it. They want you to buy their bows because they are having trouble keeping up with the cost of red bull. Most people do not really care. I used to own high end bows and I bought into all the hype and I learned an expensive lesson. Frankly, a lot of archery is now consumerism. I started with a Fred Bear grizzly years ago and have returned to the simplicity, including self bows. Bear was all about promoting archery and a lot of these guys are about promoting themselves. Personal observation, when you go to their website they don't have much in stock and then they have lead times. Seems like they have plenty of time to mealy mouth the cheap bows. Shouldn't that time be spent producing bows? Just saying.
A bow quiver isn't the worst idea, but if you take arrows from it, you will get a point of impact shift on a longbow. A lot of the time, you never have more than one arrow out of the quiver, so it won't mater, though I don't use bow quivers on anything, any more. But just as often if the the quiver is fixed, and you have the outfit in a case, then you end up with it empty, then you fill it to hunt. Or you have a removable quiver, and so it is on or off, or full or empty, it is going to ruin consistency. Just to be aware, and do some testing. While bow quivers are way less popular than they once were, a lot of top pro trad guys still use them. It is more a mater of awareness.
Good points!!
You should not be getting a noticeable POI shift unless your quiver mounting points are into the working part of the limb. Longbows tend to have a shorter riser which makes that harder, but if you get something that allows you to mount in an appropriate location you'll be fine.
Archery geek what string would you upgrade this bow with?
Defiantly get a 60x Flemish twist
@@ArcheryGeek sorry I'm new to archery would that be the same as a fast flight Flemish twist from 3rivers archery?
@@ArcheryGeek also thank you for your response 👍
Victor Calderon yes that would work. 60x has great strings too
@@ArcheryGeek thank you so much I was just confused because 60x says they dont make Flemish
Just took mine out of the box and took it out to shoot. VERY TWANGY. Why was yours so quiet? Going to put silencers on it but I doubt that will take all of the twang out of it. Any other suggestions?
What’s your brace height? And draw weight ?
Brace height initially read about 7.5 inches. Draw weight is 55 lbs.
@@jeremymoeller4797 yeah my 50# SAS was not great. I since went to #40 and love it. 7.5 is about right. I also changed the string immediately for a TTT Sting. Flemish twist
@@ArcheryGeek 55 lbs. brace height measured 7.5 inches
@@ArcheryGeek yeah. I already ordered a new string and will put silencers on it. We’ll see how it goes. I love how it shoots for me so far. Hopefully it will quiet down enough to hunt with.
Riser wood is pronounced Mack-Kore, and the Limbs are Laminated Bamboo and Glass Just so you know
Thank you
stringer, stringer, stringer...I remember taking my hunter safety course when I was 12 (now 40) and we had to string a bow...WITHOUT a stringer. Sooo I am not sold on stringer or people who push them. I love the bow though, and am trying to decide recurve or long bow...without a stringer.
Off camera.. I don’t use a stringer :). If I can help with your decision... I would go with a recurve. :)
spring a limb..its gong to happen eventually...
@@ArcheryGeek The way you were shooting with this... why? That would be an interesting video. Love to see you contrast the pioneer with a similarly priced recurve and tell us why you prefer one over the other...
👏🇮🇪
Took a deer with this bow, you definitely don't need to spend $600 plus on a Fred Bear or Hill bow.
What poundage were you shooting
@@aaronravlich6859 45LB
The custom makers are squawking about these bows. I couldn't agree with you more. I might buy one of these, but I have an old self bow kit that I bought years ago and this inspires me to finish it. It is hickory backed ipe with a masaranduba riser and some bocote tip protectors. Should make a good shooter. You really don't need some blazing fast arrows to take game, just patience and a clear mind.
If you wanted to get a Flemish twist string what length would you have to get for this bow 68”?
Worst bow I ever bought. Sent it back the next day. It was covered with white paint overspray. It shot 2 feet left every time at 15 yards. Garbage.
sorry you had that issue! as you can see mine was awesome!!
Great shooting Awesome!! i have been a compound shooter most of my life and have taken 25 deer since 1991 with a bow !! Love archery ! very addictive!! Im very intrigued by im thinking the black hunter recurve!! I think if i try one i will go with 40 lbs like you did because 60 lbs way would be way to hard to shoot!! I shoot a 55lb compound!!
if you are just getting into Trad, maybe a 30# first.. the limbs are cheap to purchase if you want to upgrade. Thanks for commenting!!
@@ArcheryGeek Thanks for the advice i was just thinking 40 lbs i could hunt with it
