Helping my buddy build an 82 yamaha virago 750 for another friend and we're doing the brake master now. I gotta say this video is one of the most informative step-by-step rebuild videos I have seen in a very long time. Im impressed. So is my buddy. Top notch.
Edited to add : You earned my sub. Cheers from Wisconsin.

Good job showing which way the seals go on in case our mind is on some Playmate of the Year when dissasembling. Also, showing the snap ring's square edge facing outward (being a machinist and assembling diff things, i figured that out yrs ago). I've never had to buy new seals. Clean them up and reassemble. Never had one leak yet; same goes for the piston caliper seals. As long as they're still flexible and free of cracks/deep pits, they work.

You re-use caliper piston seals? You must be good at removing the used ones very gently. For peace of mind, I would never, ever re-se a seal of any kind, except perhaps the reservoir diaphragm after careful inspection, and of course crush washers on sump plugs.
I am impressed that you not only can do that, but have had good results doing it. But then again, you are a machinist, so you're looking closely at parts all day long, I guess.

  • @MVW54
    @MVW54 4 роки тому +50

Important to mention… When the piston is in the rest position, the brake fluid will be balanced via The compensation hole. This compensation hole is very small, clean this compensation hole with a very thin wire of copper, if it would clog… you are guaranteed a dragging caliper, this has already happened to me twice!!! with the Honda CBX 1000. Stay Safe.

    Good tutorial, thank you.
Although there is an apparently sufficient explanation in my factory manual and a good schematic parts layout in my parts catalog, you made three or four points here that were either not made, or not made in enough detail, in those books.
The manual, for example, mentions avoiding the rubber seals getting turned/folded in on themselves.
It does not, though, show how to practically achieve that while working with small parts in a tight space that's difficult to see into.
I am glad that I watched this - even as someone with a few year's of experience of DIY maintenance - as I have not yet done this particular job. I am not even sure it is necessary to do this job, but if disassembling the calipers and silicone lubing the sliding pins and replacing the caliper cylinder seals does not give improved brake lever smooth operation, I will do this job next.
    Thanks again.
I rarely subscribe to a channel after watching just one video, but I will here.
    Thanks from Japan.

@@How2WrenchThe Goto islands off the western coast of Nagasaki? Though I have travelled a lot around Japan, and have certainly spent time in Nagasaki, I am not sure whether I have been to that island chain. Since swapping my V-strom 650 twin (bought new in 2013) for a Tmax (bought new in 2018), I have lost my love for riding-for-pleasure and have not done a long ride / tour since swapping... I am so displeased with the Tmax. Still, I use a 2015 Honda PCX 150 for a 110 kilometer round-trip commute daily, and that's the bike whose brakes I will inspect/service having watched your video... thanks.
There probably isn't, but let me know if there's anything I can do for you from over here.
If you're over here working sometimes, you probably also speak Japanese and can communicate directly / get 1st hand info yourself. Though the translation sites on the 'net are getting pretty damn good for those who don't have the huge amount of time it takes to learn a second language fully.
      Keep up the good work.

Nice to see someone comment on that adjuster screw on the lever. Just to add on some master cylinder if adjusted too far it pre loads the piston, stopping fluid from getting from the reservoir into the master cylinder bore

DOT 3 and 4 are water soluble. I always wash these things with hot water and soap. I use the baby bottle brush from Walmart to clean them. if really grimy I use my sonic cleaner with simple green, rince really good. sometime I put it in the dish washer. Then I dry with an old hair dryer, let it cool then put it back together, viola, it works

That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily!
He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones.
There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it!
      Make it a great day!

When I return rebuilt assemblies, I spray paint them (usually satin black). It takes a few seconds but the customers feel like they have a completely new assembly. I get return business because of that.

Excellent video. I used it to rebuild my master brake cylinder on a Yamaha Roadstar with no problems.
Can you possibly do a video on recharging the braking system after the rebuild with any tips to make the job quicker and easier ? It took me quite a while to get the brake pressure back up.
    Thanks.

Very good video, but i always got the seals pre installed.
Also at the end when he used the screwdriver to push in the snap ring. If he pressed the piston in it might have been easier due to less tension.

    Very informative!
My piston gets stuck and won't move once I get that last seal into the bore, likes it's too big. So do I have the wrong seals or is the spring too weak and needs replaced? It takes so much force, like alot, to push the piston/seal in and just gets stuck and won't return, thus I can't build any pressure at all. Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts. :)

    Motorbike: ZXR9 C2 1999
My master cylinder builds pressure when thumb is over the whole. Doesn't seem to want to pull fluid when the bango bolt is off the caliper any ideas? Normally it should just drip fluid but my level never changes in the reservoir. All that happens is all the fluid that's in the line gets dripped out. Nothing gets pulled from the reservoir.. when I also use a vaccume pump connected to the caliper all I get is air nothing else. Isn't until I pump the lever do I get a tiny bit of fluid then it stops again.

I've been watching you a long time and have a very high regard for you. I've learned a lot - thank you. Can I ask you question about safety? I'm curious about when you would wear gloves or not? Intuitively, brake fluid isn't something I want on my hands, but you are completely ok with it. What is your take? Thanks

I have a '84 Goldwing. Rebuilt caliper on the front. The caliper heats up and just about stops the bike. I'm told that there is a pressure release hole the size of the thinnest guitar string that needs cleaned out. It's under a small round deflector inside the reservoir. I'm having no luck finding it under the deflector. Any input? Thank you.

Now is it the whole caliper it self,or is something dirty, does something have to be clean,or is it the master cylinder, idk,any info or feed back would be very helpful and greatly appreciated

Love your videos and I learn a lot from them. How would I determine the bore size of master cylinder that is on a motorcycle? Other than the dealer, and these are 70's Harley MC, where they are not stamped on the MC themselves. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.

We grabbed Shane quick and he said you just actually measure the bore with inside calipers like this: amzn.to/3Oog4d4 and then the OD with a caliper or tape.

I’m having an issue with my master cylinder for the front brakes. Motorcycle is a 2012 Yamaha v star. I rebuilt the caliper, bought new pads, bled the front brakes manually the right way & at first I got a little bit of bubbles on both MC & Caliper bleeder but no pressure at all. I pumped for a few hours & never got much pressure. The MC was working fine before I bled the brakes. Bike only has 13k miles. Do I need a rebuild?

Had a new caliper replacement and brake bleed at a shop 5 months ago. Currently the front brake lever is locked and will not squeeze unless I bleed the caliper. Should I start at the mastercylinder again before I tear down the front caliper ?

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  4 роки тому

Hi Dave. If the lever is not returning normal, it needs attention regardless. If a caliper is "stuck" a lever will still move freely as in pump back and forth. There is a MAJOR safety concern as to why this may be happening too or the last shop missed. If your interested in hearing what to do and check show me some love here on the high 5 link and give me a call...I'll save you headaches and maybe even prevent a crash. 602-345-0432

Help! 2006 Suzuki C50. You say those two holes in the bottom, one is a fill hole and the other a return hole. Just that simple. NO It's NOT that simple. One hole has an L-shaped thingy over it, and I"m wondering if there should be a needle valve or a ball and spring under that. There is nothing. My brake cylinder doesn't "pump" any fluid at all and I'm betting it has something to do with these two holes. What can be done. Can they be serviced or do I need to replace the entire cylinder? BTW, I took the guts out of the cylinder as shown in this video and there is no visible wear or dirt.

Replaced the guts on the master cylinder. Old Snap ring broke inside the cylinder. That was a bear to dig out. Wish I knew why I can not get the front brakes to bleed at all. Front master cylinder is primed, but front brakes will neither bleed normally or with vacuum kit. Nothing at all comes out on the first bleed, before the ABS recycle.

I have a 1987 kawasaki 454ltd and I am trying to find a rebuild kit or just the cup piston which is 5x13x4mm any suggestions if another model motorcycle uses the same size piston? And the sight glass was also junk so I need to find one it's 21mm diameter and uses a o ring seal.

What made you think to rebuild the master cylinder? I have a 2001 Arctic cat 400 and the front breaks squeak all the time. I have changed the pads several times but still squeaks. The rotors look good. Could it he the master cylinder that needs rebuilt?
    Thanks for any help, Rat

Master cylinders are often rebuilt do to lack of function (completely), weak feel or leakage...I can help you more directly if needed...
