    Hi Mr Spicy. Good Instructional video. For a non-full time mechanic you have done a blinding job. It was fun, educational and took all of the "mystery" out of the job. All I'd ask if that if any of you attempt this yourself and encounter issues, stop and consult/refer/hand-over to a professional, brakes are not something you want as defective items at any time while riding a motorcycle. - Great video.

    One very minor point that hasn't been mentioned. I wouldn't rattle the hose when refilling and bleeding. Air rises and fluid drops. It could make any air in the hose go back up the system.
    Very helpful though.

    great little tutorial for the home mechanic, the only thing I would add is I probably wouldn't grease the caliper bolts, grease plus vibration during use could cause the bolts to vibrate loose. I'd always use loctite on them instead. But great video!

    I recommend putting the grease inside the rubber instead of the metal pins. When you put them in, the rubber wipes a lot of it off.
    Too much fluid? Your positioning may alter that. I'd go with higher than maximum, set height, the drain excess. (bleed)

  • @davidbesant
    @davidbesant 5 років тому +1

    With the caliper bolts, I prefer to use thread-lock rather than grease (as the manufacturers do). Never had trouble getting them out again, and no worries about the bolts vibrating loose (you really don't want that!).

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  5 років тому

      I did consider it and have done it in the past myself but i did research to see what the facts of the matter are (you can see why from the comments haha) and altho its done by many a properly torqued bolt will not come out or vibrate lose. If you really don't want them to come out wire locking them is the best option.

    The thinner first seal is the dust seal, the thicker second seal is the pressure seal.
    I refurbed my front calipers last year - new pistons, seals etc. - and tried filming it. The footage turned out to be a right dog's breakfast, missed quite a bit of it as the phone I was using either ran out of memory or battery, or both.
    I second the suggestion of loosening bolts etc. while the caliper(s) are still on the bike. In my case, the calipers are 4 pot so split into 2 halves. If I had taken them off the bike before loosening the joining bolts I would not have been able to undo them. Obviously I could put them back on the forks, but it saves time if you plan ahead and think about how things are going to happen.
    I tried to get my pistons out with piston pliers. What a pain that was. Ended up getting a piston extractor kit from Amazon. Best £40 I ever spent. Probably can be used on bearings too...

      @@spicy110all went well. Did the master cylinder- still no joy. Checked out the calipers- which had been “serviced” by a garage. They both had piston seals bursting out of the caliper - and 3 out of 8 pistons seized. 🤦‍♂️
      All cleaned and corrosion dremeled (carefully) away.
      Didn’t even lose a finger when I used my compressor to push the pistons out.
      I did get some fluid on my screen - but hey - this is bike #3 so - meh - whatever.
      All rebuilt well and got brake pressure.
      On the test ride though - the bike decided that it wanted to be triple and not an inline 4. 🤦‍♂️
      Still, I have 2 other bikes to ride and I do quite enjoy tinkering with the bikes in the garage.
      Thx again for your post - gave me confidence to attempt this.

    If you count to 5 after each pull of the lever as apposed to pulsing the brake will bleed much quicker

    • @spicy110
      @spicy110  5 років тому +1

      I had empty lines at that point i didn't want to bleed out the air i wanted to get most of it out the top. There is a small clear inner cover over the MS piston with a very small hole in it, my quick pulsing and tapping to start with dislodged the bubble allowing the line to fill without too much air to need to bleed out after. You will note on the last bleeds i do its a totally different approach more like you mentioned for actual bleeding air out the bottom.

    Important to mention… When the piston is in the rest position, the brake fluid will be balanced via The compensation hole. This compensation hole is very small, clean this compensation hole with a very thin wire of copper, if it would clog… you are guaranteed a dragging caliper, this has already happened to me twice!!! with the Honda CBX 1000. If you have replaced the piston and seals in the master cylinder and it's leaking and it's defo the right part. I would say the seals are not in the right way or you could even have a crack in the housing. Best get it off the bars, clean it up and find where that leak is coming from.
