    Most people have been told that the golf swing is side arm or underhanded motion. Anyone who tries to do this fails because golf is actually an overhand motion. If the hands are at shoulder height or above we're using an overhanded motion. When we imagine swinging the club above our shoulders we think of the right arm under the club and therefore the arm must rotate clockwise (if the right arm were straight out forward,) but, when we perceive the right arm being above the club the right arm must rotate counterclockwise! Therefore, we have to imagine or perceive we’re under the club or swinging it above our shoulders which is the OVERHAND MOTION! Although the right arm is above the club at impact it’s under the shaft or swing plane until just before that point and therefore we need to get the clubhead moving in the proper direction so that it continues when the right arm gets on top.
    Most people have been told that the golf swing is side arm or underhanded motion. Anyone who tries to do this fails because golf is actually an overhand motion.
    Golf should not be a struggle. Golf should not be hard. Golf is easy if you know the secret.

    Ive been golfing and playing tennis for decades.
    My golf swing was very similar to yours but you helped me tweek
    it a bit so Ive added yards and my draw is a bit stronger but
    certainly acceptable.
    Tennis wise, for fun, I tried hitting my forehand
    topspin shot with the "overhand" technique by simply
    bending over more.
    Ill be damed but it works great! Tons of power and spin!
    One can also hit backspin and drop shots by varying your posture
    and grip. Also very flat hard shots are much easier.
    Having your hand over your shoulder feels strong and
    natural.
    I love it. Henry- Paradise Ca.

      That's great! Tennis and baseball players, when the truly figure out how to use the golf club properly can kill it. There's a kid around here in So. Cal who's a tennis pro and he hits the golf ball ~390 yards. I haven't seen him myself but friends have played with him and said it's absolutely incredible.

    Your swing finally makes sense! I've been trying to do the Holy Grail with the club head below my right shoulder when it should have been on the same level as my head. And also now that clockwise, backward rotation with the right forearm
    coming down from the top of the backswing makes sense also! WOW!!!

    You must absolutely swing the club versus hitting at the ball. The holy grail definitely explains the correct way the club needs to travel to get to proper impact and how your body functions to make it happen but you can do all he recommends and still be attempting to hit at the ball versus swinging the club which will produce the same inconsistent results. He has another video about swinging through the ball versus hitting which I recommend watching over and over and over.

      I think I need to make another video about attempting to prove me wrong. I've discovered that if the player wants the HG swing to work they tend to try to help it or make it work, whereas if they try to make it fail, or prove me wrong, they do it correctly and the results are fantastic.

    Overhand vs underhand is misunderstood. I am a men’s fastpitch softball player. I’m 50 years old and still can throw it 75mph and was over 80mph when I was younger. Well, you’ll say ‘overhand pitchers throw 90+’
    I threw a BASEBALL underhand 84 mph when I was 43yrs old. Probably would have been well over 90 had I tried it when I was in my 20’s. Big difference between a baseball and softball. Also, overhand guys are clocked using a mound, which helps. Overhand is also used by people from an early age and when they try underhand they do it wrong. My 17yr old and 19yr old were taught underhand by me when they were 5 or 6 and both now throw 75-80mph, with a softball. If you understand the physics of each throw; underhand has an advantage in certain trajectories. A SS should always throw underhand in certain throws if he knew how. In golf, it can be used as well. I underhand the club and can still hit driver well over 300. The problem is no one understand the motion when applied to a golf. And when I try to explain it, it’s makes no sense because of what is engrained in people’s minds. Oh well...

      As a longtime slowpitch softball player, who has only been playing golf for a year, I am completely following you. Some of the best shortstops I have played with have an amazing amount of throwing power and pinpoint accuracy when they field a ball and throw underhand. For example, when a guy takes a couple steps to his left to field a slow rolling grounder in perfect position with his glove hand down and his throwing hand just outside the glove, the ball goes into his glove and then to his throwing hand, and from this position, he turns his body toward first base while making a hard and accurate underhand throw. Shortstops like that are fun to play with, such skilled athletes. I can definitely see your point on how this would apply in golf.

      If you swing a weight on a rope at a moderate speed the weight swings on one flat orbit but the rope moves on a conical. Only at maximum speed do the two move on the same plane. The clubhead and shaft do not need to move on the same plane. The shaft is like an inverted conical and the clubhead moves on a somewhat flat plane.

    This is really interesting, and i appreciate the heck out of where you're coming from, but I really think it's ultimately not an overhand motion but an underhand motion from the top. Some say softball, ok, for much of the way down yes, but for me it's ultimately exactly line a big old *uppercut* haymaker and (this is vital) is delivered just like that punch with your *head back* and ends with your *chest high*. The problem i have with saying it's overhand is that that motion ends with your torso in flexion yknow?? Which is always completely detrimental to hitting a golf ball well. Just my 2c but again love where you're coming from!

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  Рік тому

      In reality it doesn't matter if it's overhand or something else. The golf swing is the golf swing but thinking of it as overhanded gets people to stop trying to swing the club from above it, like it's some sort of giant croquet motion. The reason I say overhand is that the golf club becomes an extension of your right forearm and like I said in the video, if you're hand is above your shoulder it's overhand - and when you factor in the club's length the clubhead is way above the shoulders. Take a look at DJ, Joaquín Niemann or Ryan Fox and you'll see the overhand swing.

    • @djpoints
      @djpoints Рік тому

      @@HolyGrailOfGolf hear-hear, admittedly I'm not familiar with the avg hacker's instinct to feel like they're swinging from below but it sounds like what you're saying is that is the general instinct and your very creative overhand mindset would seemingly cure that plague. Would it be fair to say that more generally speaking you are ultimately a very dominant trail (right) arm proponent? In the downswing that is. That's really what it boils down to for me. And there seems to be major division within the golf community on this subject. To me this is vital and produces the overhand mindset. I say haymaker bc I love the way that motion pins your elbow, keeps your head back, and chest proud following impact...gonna go check out those names you mention...

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  Рік тому +1

      @@djpoints I would say the golf swing is right arm dominant but the left side plays a big part too. Both provide some power but I think most of the power comes from the right hand. It's one of our strongest and most coordinated body parts so to say it's not playing a big role would be silly in my opinion. I believe the right hand creates the initial speed and then passes it off to the left side which delivers it to the ball. I would say the right side quits just before impact so there's a handoff in a way.
      I think the old style traditional American golf swing was left arm dominant which made it very smooth and elegant looking but never produced tremendous distance like the modern swing.

      I think what you're describing is why everyone believes the golf swing is a sidearm action and not overhand. It all has to do with the tilt of the shoulders and not so much the angle of the spine. The best players actually hit the ball with the club at an acute angle to the spine (smaller than perpendicular.) I made a video about that a long time ago. They're actually leaning more forward at impact than they were at address. So essentially they're swinging upward in relation to their torso.

    What’s going on with the hand towel?

    • @HolyGrailOfGolf
      @HolyGrailOfGolf  3 роки тому

      It's easier than using a glove for practice swings in the back yard. The clubs I swing out there sit outside so the grips are old. This one has hose mending tape on it and the towel provides a comfortable grip that doesn't hurt my hands and I know the club isn't going to fly out of my hands. If I swing barehanded it have to grip the club so tightly that not only is that a bad habit but it also hurts my hands. So, I just wrap this little microfiber towel around the grip and it works great.

      @@Tuckercashthecorgi I need to make a video about this so thanks for reminding me. The best putting tip, imo, is learning to hit the ball where you think you're hitting it. Huh? Yeah, so many people aren't actually hitting the ball where they think they are. Take two or three balls and like billiards just walk up and crash or carom one ball into another quickly and hard enough so they they bounce 4 or 5 feet apart each time. At first you'll find it quite hard but after 5 minutes or so you'll be able to hit a ball 12 feet or more away easily. This is training your eyes and hands to hit the ball where you're looking. I have told people to do this and they think it's easy and then they can't hit the ball 4 feet away, because they're not hitting the ball where they think they are. It's kinda like basketball, we need to throw enough baskets in practice so that we just know what we need to do without thinking about it. Aaron Baddaley used to say it was like tossing a ball. No one ever thinks about how hard or what direction when tossing a ball to a friend, but if we didn't practice that as a kid, we would have to think about it.
      That drill can be done in the house or on the green. It's about direction and nothing else so speed doesn't matter. Sometimes, I get the ball out at 15 feet or so before I miss one. If you get direction where you don't have to think about it, then the only thing you need to think about is speed.

I say this because the best swing that I've found for myself and I've tried probably at least 50 different types of swings I feel like at this point over 10 years of actually studying and trying to understand some of these mechanics. For me my best swing is I go back with my hands following on an arc going upward and then when I come down I get my hands as low as possible and then release like crazy upward almost like feeling starting a lawn mower as hard as I can! Now for context I am a left-handed dominated person who plays right handed. So I think my actual strength lies in using the mechanics that way. I've tried many other ways and none of them get the swing speed or the compression nothing's even close. So when you're saying this overhand concept it might have more to do with the physiology than just everyone should swing over-handed. In my current theoretical approach overhanded would be for somebody whose arms sit much higher at setup. For example if my hands are all the way down to my knees when I set up I don't see a way I could be swinging over-handed without sticking the club in the ground with like a nine iron. Yet if your hands much higher say at your belt line or somewhere in there then yes you can go down after the ball in an overhanded swinging fashion. I guess my point is I think it depends on the person's frame and where they're long and short saying the legs torso arms I think ultimately you're trying to get a pretty natural arm swing and a natural hip hinge. I think once a person finds that then they got to figure out a pattern that works for them whether it's over under under over or right on plane. I truly think it's a lot more individual than what the golf industry teaches

      Interesting point. I hadn’t thought about the lefty who plays right handed. As far as skeletal structure goes I have to disagree because players like Ryan Fox’s build compared to Juaquin Neimann and they both swing overhand.

      @@HolyGrailOfGolf yes but if you look at players that are super tall they get under the plane and come up. A lot of long drive people do this I'm noticing. So a great example right now would be Adrian Moronk who plays on the liv golf tour. He is 6'6" and swings a driver that's 45 inches long. What I believe he does is goes back drops the club in a slot Under start swinging low and then goes up as hard as he can. It would be more of an underhanded throw or an extreme sidearm. The only reason I got into a lot of this was because I think my mechanics don't fit the club fittings I'm trying to get. So the easiest way I can illustrate it to think of it making sense is a baseball pitcher the traditional way or a baseball pitcher who throws sidearm or a softball pitcher who pitches underhand!I think they're all very different mechanics with very different releases in different motions. The baseball pitcher would be coming downward what should be much easier to throw a sinker or something dropping, then the sidearm pitcher would be on plane so they're going more around their more than likely could typically have a really good curve or slider) then the softball pitcher it's much easier to throw a rise ball if you've ever played fastpitch softball. But my point is that the mechanics of all three of them would be very different and the way they're using their arms and their hands are very different in the muscles so that's what I'm talking about with skeletal frames! Some people have very long legs and short arms other people have very long arms and short legs some people have long torsos etc. Which to me is going to create different motions you can't all swing exactly the same especially when you're bent from the hips. The club is going to need to go at different angles and if it goes at a different angle the body is going to need to move differently and the equipment is going to be completely different. Like I said I think this is just theoretical but I believe some people swing from the top down some people swing around and some people swing under the up. Mike Adams research has confirmed it for the most part but I can't get definitive information for how that would affect equipment or how the body moves differently. Mike Adams research talks about someone swinging over someone swinging on and then someone swinging under and how the releases would be very different once a covering type of release once a cornering release and the other is a launching release. There's no way with all the different frames everyone should swing the exact same way.

      @jacobr4558 4 місяці тому

      @@HolyGrailOfGolf also just for some context what's my mechanics. The only reason I'm getting into this field is because in my downswing I feel like my hands can get exceptionally low like it feels comfortable that way and then when I get into impact I can rise up and sink the club up and everything and compress the ball perfectly and that's the only way to swing makes sense to me right now. I can swing the other way where it's more just kind of staying on plane but I can only generate so much speed that way because I don't leverage everything that way for some reason like it's fine it's decent speed but it doesn't feel like my potential. Also when I swing that way the other way the traditional way not my actual swing I need a club that is much lighter in the swing weight the longer I go in shaft length of the club. However the shorter I go how much heavier swing weight ! So good example going back to Adrian Moronk I'm guessing that his driver has a very heavy swing weight because it's so short. Yet if you can trust that with Bryson dechambeau his driver's like a B9 swing weight or something ridiculously light so the head feels super light. In other words if you're going for a dramatic whip dim the swing weight needs to be light because you're going for speed but if the club is very short and you're going under and up you need a heavy swing weight because you need the mass even if it's comparable speed. So that would be more like swinging a hammer and the other one would be more like swinging a flail. I think the issue with instruction and the industry in general is that it's teaching people that it only works one way and I honestly don't think that's real anymore. Just a little more insight into the research Johnny Miller when he won several tournaments in 1973 was using a 43 1/2 inch driver and he is 6'2". He also had to add a bunch of weight so the swing weight was D9 and to me he look like he would swing under them up. Definitely not an overhead throw. And oddly enough he fits a lot of the criteria that I think of with the shorter legs longer torso longer arms etcetera. But his swing looks like he would go back over the plane and the downswing he could get under the plane and then he launch up( like fastpitch softball)

      Also Sergio Garcia is another example or model that I think of for myself because he's left-handed but swings right. Albert Pujols' elbow position in the link waiting to hit the ball is parallel to the ground. Once the elbow attains this position at the end of the golf backswing the transition to the through swing initiates. This is key I find for power & accuracy when applying this principle.
