HK2NY Retrospective Pt 2 | Our RTW Backpacking Trip...8 Years Later

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 13 тра 2021
  • In 2013, James and I went on a round the world backpacking trip from Hong Kong To New York, travelling through 20 countries across 4 continents in 9 months.
We filmed the entire trip just using a home video camera, I edited it into the 11-part series "HK2NY: Hong Kong To New York", which to date has now had a combined total of 2.5 million views.
In this 2nd part we look back on:
    - the 2nd half of the trip (obviously)
    - editing the 11 part series
    - how the trip changed our lives
    - and the new adventures we went on after

Thanks to each and everyone of you who's enjoyed the series and supported the channel over the years!! 🙂🙂❤❤
Few people have asked about the budget of the trip, we spent £22k each, here's the budget breakdown video, but remember what James says at the end - you can travel anyway you want, spending as little or as much as you want 🙂

These videos changed my life, which is a strange thing to say. I woke up one Sunday, saw these in my suggested videos and watched them all back to back. I'd always wanted to travel but seeing these gave me the kick I needed to actually do it. After a brutal 2 years of saving every penny, I spent almost 4 years traveling through 94 countries, met my wife a long the way and now happily settled in the US. A long way from the North of England! Never thought I'd be able to get out of my tiny little hometown, but here I am, living in a big city, living a lifestyle I never thought was possible. All down to a video of 2 blokes in Hong Kong... Crazy really. Thank you Karl and James, you'll never understand the impact these videos had on my life.

I wish this journey would last forever... I really felt like I was a part of this trip back then, it was so honest, so genuine and beautiful. And it's agonizing to realize that each journey must end and you have to leave random friends and incredible places behind. I hope more epic trips are waiting for ya, Karl!

Your story telling is the best. I felt like being travelling with you guys and it is emotional to watch. You two, karl watson and james walsh, are may known better than film actors and you are worldwide (not just youtube) famous. Inspiring and entertaining and emotional. The music in the intro from your friend is also exceptional. This makes it an experience to watch the series and these 2 parts of the retrospective are so interesting with all the behind the scenes comments. Please make more Karl & James travel videos.

As you've said in this video, people said to you 'youre the reason I'm on this trip' and it was the same for me,you're the reason I quit my job of 10 years, sold everything I own and bought a one way ticket to India. 3 years later I'm still 'travelling' I guess. I haven't been home to England, although this covid stuff has halted me moving countries as frequently,I'm still living the dream I set out to. So for that, thanks mate 👍🏻 you've inspired a lot of people.

I really enjoyed watching this recap Karl. I think what makes this series so great is one, it's very genuine, you're not both trying to be something you're not. Two, nothing is super coated, you're right there are lots of ups and down when travelling and it can often be stressful (I think I'm with James, I like to take travelling at a slower pace). Three I think the evolution of James' hair and is something to behold.

That was an awesome retrospective! Brought up a lot of good memories. Seeing HK2NY inspired me to go solo backpacking for 4 months in 2016 following the route through Vietnam, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Before HK2NY I didn’t even know what backpacking was like. I thought it would be really lonely. But it was such an awesome time, meeting so many people and really stepping out of my comfort zone. And as you said, it changes you and your perspective of the world. I believe I am a better person now because of that. And all of that because you decided to Film the trip and put it here on UA-cam. James is the biggest beneficiary of this 9 month travel around the world trip, my opinion anyway. It brought out true of who he is nice cool looking dude. It’s not hard to tell if you look at him in the Heathrow departure lounge (beaten up by the 9-5 office rat race with not much to look forward to) vs buzzing and beaming like a free bird on the return flight home. @Karl there are no words to describe how good your story telling skills are which is obvious from quality of your editing. Top notch travel series! You and James must have an exceptional amount of memories as well as this well crafted set of videos. I would love to do the same right now but im not sure the wife and daughter would be so happy! Looking forward to many more adventures. Best of luck for the future!

Hey Karl, about that feeling coming home: i've been there, as problably have been many others before, 8 month nz, no video tho, but about 30k photos - but it took some 8 years to create a book from them, thanks for sharing your trip, those videos always bring back the feeling of traveling back, i got to get my ass up from this chair and travel again...

Both these retrospective films were great mate. Loved hearing more of the backstory behind why you wanted to go and the growth that happened from it. Every time I have doubts about doing my dream 7-month trip (once the world is back to normal in 1-2 years), I think of HK2NY and say "No matter what, I'm doing it"

Bro this was amazing! Such a great way to close off the HK2NY journey.
Your HK2NY genuinely inspired me to film my building project in Namibia and now the company I founded depends on quality media. Your videos reached many people in different ways. But for me, I was able to film my journey going from homelessness to building net zero buildings across continents and it’s because of HK2NY I felt confident enough to pick up a camera and bring other videographers to film the journey.
    Thank you

I think the first video from your channel that I saw was the HK2NY about New Zealand after I bought my own ticket to Auckland. And Im pretty sure I have not missed an video/episode since. Thank you for the work you put into the editing, we do appreciate it. Your view and editing is very true to what most of backpackers experience when we go travelling and its not just the ''instagram version''', it shows the ups and downs of travelling and has never seemed fake. I would say that its a masterful take in this day and age where everybody else does overproduced, super-positive sponsored content. So keep up the good work !
