I've been living in China for about a year and half now. Beijing is an awesome city. The hutongs, Wafujing Market, the parks. It's great. This video really give you sights you will experience on a daily basis here. Keep up the great work.
It's my favorite travel trilogy on UA-cam. More like a movie than a documentary/blog with all these twist and turns, unexpected incidents, developing characters and so on. The third part is epic, I watched it on numerous occasions and still get goosebumbs.
Though the bias in the video is obvious, but my post is not intended to criticize someone, just to dispel misconceptions. In China, buses that run for long distance all over China have cameras in them, Tibet is not the special case, the video just distorts the fact. In fact, Chinese police holds a system called "Sky Net", foreigners who are in China can find there will be several cameras at a single crossroad, that is why we Chinese can hang out without being afraid at midnight, someone who do something illegal can be find easily by videos filmed by these cameras. But to westerners, this can be violations of private space and human rights or the government oppresses Chinese, as far as I know, most of Chinese just don't mind this. As for a police got on the bus in the video, I think it make sense he would spy on you to some extent, cause you guys head for the Tibetan's borders, especially you are foreigners,but I am not for sure . As for the word "invade" in this video, It depends on how a people see the whole thing. In Chinese perspective, Dalai Lama claimed independence of Tibet at 1913, but the ROC government didn't admit it, at last CCP liberated Tibet, even ROC retreated to Taiwan, Tibet is regarded as part of China by ROC. But in the perspective of a westerner, we definitely invaded Tibet. What I am curious about is that India annexed Sikkim, you hypocrisy guys almost don't know that and show no sympathy on Sikkimese. America invaded Iraq in the name of mass destruction by bypassing UN, but you hypocrisy guys never condemned America. Political tricks fool everyone. I have been to Tibet for two times, most of Tibetan are nice, the Tibetans I met admire Mao, some even put a Mao's picture. This may sounds unbelievable to you guys. Let me give you a brief idea, before the biggest slave owner-Dalai Lama exiled, many slaves were tortured, noses, arms, ears or legs were cut off for punishment. But Dalai Lama as the spirit leader of Tibetans, fanatics and some ordinary Tibetans do still admire him, they miss the day that they are nobles, of course, admiration for Dalai Lama is also a factor. In my eyes, Dalai Lama is a good spirit leader capable of writing good books , it make sense that westerners love him, but westerners are ignorant of what he did before he exiled, moreover his politic skills suck. At last, I know my post will attract haters, I have tried to be rational and just tell something by my experience. Be ignorant or not, it is just the business of who will post a hateful comment to me. Keep this in mind, I am not to impose my opinions on others, no need to be rude, I can gain nothing from whether you believe what I say or not. Yes, all public buses which include the short distance buses which I saw in Singapore do installed with security camera too. It’s a very common practice.
Are Chinese temple rooftop occupied by PLA and used as training ground for soldiers. Obviously, Jokhang rooftop is occupied by PLA and always see soldiers with guns trained at Tibetans. All Tibetan temples and monasteries are under the direct control of PLA and Chinese officials. The tallest building in Lhasa is Police station. Having a picture of Dalai Lama is crime in Tibet while Tibetans homes are coerced into hanging a picture of Mao to Xi in their home while no such coercion is enforced in China. The Chinese need to be honest and to tell the truth and stop lying about Tibet. Chinese didn't want to live under foreign oppression so do Tibetans. Treat the Tibetans as equal not as second class in their own country - Tibet.

Tibet has always been under Chinese rule since Ming Dynasty (mostly autonomous region like US territories today). 2. UK invaded China twice in the late 1800s and these invasions from the West eventually caused the overthrowing of the last Emperor which resulted in China splitting into warloards. During this time Tibet had a brief independence. But between 1910-1949, there were no unified China in the first place. China was divided into four main "countries": Japan's Manchuria, Beiyang government in Beijing, the Republic of China government in Nanjing and Tibet. Tibet is just part of this fracturing process. In fact, the first flag of Republic of China (1911) had five strips, representing The Union of The Five Races, namely Han, Mongols, Manchus, Hui and Tibetan. 3. PRC went into Tibet relatively peacefully in 1950 and negotiated a deal with Dalai Lama so Tibet joined China peacefully via autonomous rule. 4. US CIA trained Tibetan rebels and sent money to Dalai Lama throughout 1950s, which lead to a violent uprising in 1959 and the eventual exile of Dalai Lama. China today exempts all taxes from Tibet and 97% of Tibetan budget is coming from other provinces' transfer payments. Also the footage of the killing of lamas is not from Tibet. No, the Tibetans in Tibet are actually not force to put on Mao’s portrait. Many of them especially the older generation do truly admire Mao. And yes, these happened to some of those Uyghurs in Xinjiang too. I have been to Hainan, the most southern province of China… I saw the same scenario there, many families with older generation members love to hang Mao’s portrait in their home or shops. I asked them why? Every one of them said… because Mao is a true great leader, unlike some of those corrupted officials nowadays in China.

I was there about then and found the Forbidden City a pity,almost empty. Don't tell me you missed Mao's Tomb? Those steps will look like a cakewalk when you get on Everest.
I returned from china 10 days ago :). We went to cities like Ningbo, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Jiaxing, Huzhou, the Chengsi islands and Shanghai to give concerts and do a little bit of sightseeing.
My respect to you guys for not shying away from briefing about Tibet which mostly fail to do so - either they get carried away by purported Chinese claim of being inherent part of it or some just don't even know. Thanks for the sharing this vlog, its means a lot to a perosn like me who can only visulaize about it. Thanks once again and you guys are awesome. Love from India.
This is probably the best Video on a Tibet "Backpacking Tour" which includes that Hi-speed Train ride on UA-cam! You guys did something I always dreamed about! I read Alexandria David Neel's book "Journey to Lhasa" back in the 1970's, then when I wanted to go there happened to be lots of "unrest" and the place was closed to tourists for a while. Now I'm 64 and have my own health issues; I'd never survive it. Also, I'd shoot my mouth off too because I've read so much about the Chinese atrocities in Tibet, Nuclear Waste dumps on the plateau, Internment camps for Tibetans, the prohibition of using the Tibetan language in schools etc. The whole thing is to exterminate the Tibetan Culture and it frustrates me to no end. Nice work guys, very professional and great camera work!!
You've been brainwashed by western countries too!Actually all school in China using Mandarin as their primary language,not just Tibet!haha...and dialect not prohibited in daily lives!You can watch lots of video on youtube about traveling Tibet,those local people mostly speak their dialects.
Tibetans go to Tibetan language schools with instruction wholly in Tibetan up until the end of middle school. Then, they can choose to switch to Chinese schools or stay in the Tibetan curriculum. Most choose to switch because the reality is that one needs to be proficient in Mandarin Chinese to get further in life in China. I have seen a youtube video where a teacher teaches arithmetic in Tibetan to students in China. So Tibetan, like most other ethnic minority languages in China, is very much a part of the educational curriculum.
As a matter of fact, most Tibetans who go to India are bilingual in both Tibetan and Chinese. It is actually India where Tibetan language is more threatened. For example, the schools for Tibetans in Dharamsala teach mostly in English and Hindi while Tibetan instruction is given much less priority. Meanwhile, in Indian-controlled Ladakh, the Ladakhi language (a branch of Tibetan) is not even taught in school - English and Urdu, the official language of Kashmir, are taught instead.
Also the internment camps and nuclear waste dumping, while abhorrent, occurred mostly in Qinghai, on the northern fringes of the Tibetan plateau, which is very sparsely populated (one of the lowest population densities in the world) and populated by more Mongols than Tibetan in many places. It is a very mixed area of the Plateau. As a matter of fact, if you read the Dalai Lama's autobiography, he even says that he was born in Qinghai to a TIbetan family who abandoned the use of the Tibetan language many generations ago and switched to the Qinghai dialect of Chinese instead (what he calls "a broken form of Chinese"). As a matter of fact, he did not learn to speak a word of Tibetan until he went to Lhasa to began his training and education as the Dalai Lama.
I had to go to hospital in Shigatse too and it was disgusting then in 2009. Also at the Potala Palace we were allowed to photograph inside back then. Gyantze was my favourite place in Tibet and obviously at the base of Mt Everest 😊

@@taidelek9994 I stayed 8 weeks in Tibet. I was in Lhasa for a few weeks and tried to get a permit to travel to Mount Kailash. After many visits to the local police station I was able to get one. There were no trains connecting Beijing to Lhasa, few cars and fewer Han-Chinese. In September of that year there was an uprising in Lhasa, by that time I had already left.

I was just looking for Tibet travel Vlogs because I'm Tibetan but I've never been there. bumped into this vid and the comment section is a mess. I've seen a lot of these people. They'll call you (western) idealistic and brainwashed for wanting safety for oppressed people. Don't mind them, Karl. It might seem like a lot of people dislike the video but that's mainly because China has a large population so there are gonna be a larger proportion of people trying to fight you. As long as you treat the people around you in that country with respect, I think it's alright. We are entitled to have our own political views (cough*unlikesomeothercountry*cough). The strange thing is, these people don't give a shit when someone comments on the economic disparity in their country, corruption etc, but if you mention the word Tibet, they are all on to you and start ganging up on you. Since there are so many of these comments, it's hard to counter everyone of them, so the best thing to to do ignore them. great to see that you're holding your own. great vid. I would love to go to Tibet someday but only if my safety is garaunteed. I live in the UK too!!

If you are interested in the political issues related to China, you will find that the voices of standing with China are always overwhelmingly attacked and suppressed.
emm, you know Tibet is just a province of China called 西藏 in Chinese and there are a lot of Han people living there~ Due to some political reasons, this area may be a little politically sensitive but it is within China's history and you are really welcome to come ever again !
And I do not get the point of the camera. They are everywhere in each city in China. I don't see a reason why the cameras in Tibet are for any special considerations.
Seeing the military everywhere should give you a clue. The Chinese government does a lot of surveillance. There have been several uprisings in the past.
I was just in China for 5 weeks, I would say that Beijing shows off the worst of life quality in modern China and places such as Shenyang or Xiamen are more appealing

The British expedition to Tibet or Younghusband expedition to Tibet began in December 1903 and lasted until September 1904. The expedition was effectively a temporary invasion by British Indian forces under the auspices of the Tibet Frontier Commission, whose purported mission was to establish diplomatic relations and resolve the dispute over the border between Tibet and Sikkim.[2] In the nineteenth century, the British conquered Burma and Sikkim, occupying the whole southern flank of Tibet. The Tibetan Ganden Phodrang regime, which was then under administrative rule of the Qing dynasty, remained the only Himalayan regime free of British influence. It's my favorite travel trilogy on UA-cam. More like a movie than a documentary/blog with all these twist and turns, unexpected incidents, developing characters and so on. The third part is epic, I watched it on numerous occasions and still get goosebumbs.

Though the bias in the video is obvious, but my post is not intended to criticize someone, just to dispel misconceptions.
In China, buses that run for long distance all over China have cameras in them, Tibet is not the special case, the video just distorts the fact. In fact, Chinese police holds a system called "Sky Net", foreigners who are in China can find there will be several cameras at a single crossroad, that is why we Chinese can hang out without being afraid at midnight, someone who do something illegal can be find easily by videos filmed by these cameras. But to westerners, this can be violations of private space and human rights or the government oppresses Chinese, as far as I know, most of Chinese just don't mind this.
As for a police got on the bus in the video, I think it make sense he would spy on you to some extent, cause you guys head for the Tibetan's borders, especially you are foreigners,but I am not for sure .
As for the word "invade" in this video, It depends on how a people see the whole thing. In Chinese perspective, Dalai Lama claimed independence of Tibet at 1913, but the ROC government didn't admit it, at last CCP liberated Tibet, even ROC retreated to Taiwan, Tibet is regarded as part of China by ROC. But in the perspective of a westerner, we definitely invaded Tibet. What I am curious about is that India annexed Sikkim, you hypocrisy guys almost don't know that and show no sympathy on Sikkimese. America invaded Iraq in the name of mass destruction by bypassing UN, but you hypocrisy guys never condemned America. Political tricks fool everyone.
I have been to Tibet for two times, most of Tibetan are nice, the Tibetans I met admire Mao, some even put a Mao's picture. This may sounds unbelievable to you guys. Let me give you a brief idea, before the biggest slave owner-Dalai Lama exiled, many slaves were tortured, noses, arms, ears or legs were cut off for punishment. But Dalai Lama as the spirit leader of Tibetans, fanatics and some ordinary Tibetans do still admire him, they miss the day that they are nobles, of course, admiration for Dalai Lama is also a factor. In my eyes, Dalai Lama is a good spirit leader capable of writing good books , it make sense that westerners love him, but westerners are ignorant of what he did before he exiled, moreover his politic skills suck.
At last, I know my post will attract haters, I have tried to be rational and just tell something by my experience. Be ignorant or not, it is just the business of who will post a hateful comment to me. Keep this in mind, I am not to impose my opinions on others, no need to be rude, I can gain nothing from whether you believe what I say or not.
PS:To the guys in the video, as for the cameras in buses, it is a common phenomenon in China, why will you think like that? Maybe it is kind of brainwashing or stereotype.
Yes, all public buses which include the short distance buses which I saw in Singapore do installed with security camera too. It’s a very common practice.
Are Chinese temple rooftop occupied by PLA and used as training ground for soldiers. Obviously, Jokhang rooftop is occupied by PLA and always see soldiers with guns trained at Tibetans. All Tibetan temples and monasteries are under the direct control of PLA and Chinese officials. The tallest building in Lhasa is Police station.
Having a picture of Dalai Lama is crime in Tibet while Tibetans homes are coerced into hanging a picture of Mao to Xi in their home while no such coercion is enforced in China.
The Chinese need to be honest and to tell the truth and stop lying about Tibet. Chinese didn't want to live under foreign oppression so do Tibetans. Treat the Tibetans as equal not as second class in their own country - Tibet.

1. Tibet has always been under Chinese rule since Ming Dynasty (mostly autonomous region like US territories today).
2. UK invaded China twice in the late 1800s and these invasions from the West eventually caused the overthrowing of the last Emperor which resulted in China splitting into warloards. During this time Tibet had a brief independence. But between 1910-1949, there were no unified China in the first place. China was divided into four main "countries": Japan's Manchuria, Beiyang government in Beijing, the Republic of China government in Nanjing and Tibet. Tibet is just part of this fracturing process. In fact, the first flag of Republic of China (1911) had five strips, representing The Union of The Five Races, namely Han, Mongols, Manchus, Hui and Tibetan.
3. PRC went into Tibet relatively peacefully in 1950 and negotiated a deal with Dalai Lama so Tibet joined China peacefully via autonomous rule.
4. US CIA trained Tibetan rebels and sent money to Dalai Lama throughout 1950s, which lead to a violent uprising in 1959 and the eventual exile of Dalai Lama.
China today exempts all taxes from Tibet and 97% of Tibetan budget is coming from other provinces' transfer payments.
Also the footage of the killing of lamas is not from Tibet.
You also know nothing about the 2008 Tibetan riot. Read some unbiased information before putting politics in your video.

There is no direct train (at least not yet). Right now, the train in China only goes as far as Shigatse/Xigaze in Tibet.

I returned from china 10 days ago :). We went to cities like Ningbo, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Jiaxing, Huzhou, the Chengsi islands and Shanghai to give concerts and do a little bit of sightseeing.
My respect to you guys for not shying away from briefing about Tibet which mostly fail to do so - either they get carried away by purported Chinese claim of being inherent part of it or some just don't even know. Thanks for the sharing this vlog, its means a lot to a perosn like me who can only visulaize about it. Thanks once again and you guys are awesome. Love from India.

This is probably the best Video on a Tibet "Backpacking Tour" which includes that Hi-speed Train ride on UA-cam! You guys did something I always dreamed about! I read Alexandria David Neel's book "Journey to Lhasa" back in the 1970's, then when I wanted to go there happened to be lots of "unrest" and the place was closed to tourists for a while. Now I'm 64 and have my own health issues; I'd never survive it. Also, I'd shoot my mouth off too because I've read so much about the Chinese atrocities in Tibet, Nuclear Waste dumps on the plateau, Internment camps for Tibetans, the prohibition of using the Tibetan language in schools etc. The whole thing is to exterminate the Tibetan Culture and it frustrates me to no end. Nice work guys, very professional and great camera work!!
You've been brainwashed by western countries too!Actually all school in China using Mandarin as their primary language,not just Tibet!haha...and dialect not prohibited in daily lives!You can watch lots of video on youtube about traveling Tibet,those local people mostly speak their dialects.
Tibetans go to Tibetan language schools with instruction wholly in Tibetan up until the end of middle school. Then, they can choose to switch to Chinese schools or stay in the Tibetan curriculum. Most choose to switch because the reality is that one needs to be proficient in Mandarin Chinese to get further in life in China. I have seen a youtube video where a teacher teaches arithmetic in Tibetan to students in China. So Tibetan, like most other ethnic minority languages in China, is very much a part of the educational curriculum.
As a matter of fact, most Tibetans who go to India are bilingual in both Tibetan and Chinese. It is actually India where Tibetan language is more threatened. For example, the schools for Tibetans in Dharamsala teach mostly in English and Hindi while Tibetan instruction is given much less priority. Meanwhile, in Indian-controlled Ladakh, the Ladakhi language (a branch of Tibetan) is not even taught in school - English and Urdu, the official language of Kashmir, are taught instead.
Also the internment camps and nuclear waste dumping, while abhorrent, occurred mostly in Qinghai, on the northern fringes of the Tibetan plateau, which is very sparsely populated (one of the lowest population densities in the world) and populated by more Mongols than Tibetan in many places. It is a very mixed area of the Plateau. As a matter of fact, if you read the Dalai Lama's autobiography, he even says that he was born in Qinghai to a TIbetan family who abandoned the use of the Tibetan language many generations ago and switched to the Qinghai dialect of Chinese instead (what he calls "a broken form of Chinese"). As a matter of fact, he did not learn to speak a word of Tibetan until he went to Lhasa to began his training and education as the Dalai Lama.

I had to go to hospital in Shigatse too and it was disgusting then in 2009. Also at the Potala Palace we were allowed to photograph inside back then. Gyantze was my favourite place in Tibet and obviously at the base of Mt Everest 😊

@@taidelek9994 I stayed 8 weeks in Tibet. I was in Lhasa for a few weeks and tried to get a permit to travel to Mount Kailash. After many visits to the local police station I was able to get one. There were no trains connecting Beijing to Lhasa, few cars and fewer Han-Chinese. In September of that year there was an uprising in Lhasa, by that time I had already left.

I was just looking for Tibet travel Vlogs because I'm Tibetan but I've never been there. bumped into this vid and the comment section is a mess. I've seen a lot of these people. They'll call you (western) idealistic and brainwashed for wanting safety for oppressed people. Don't mind them, Karl. It might seem like a lot of people dislike the video but that's mainly because China has a large population so there are gonna be a larger proportion of people trying to fight you. As long as you treat the people around you in that country with respect, I think it's alright. We are entitled to have our own political views (cough*unlikesomeothercountry*cough). The strange thing is, these people don't give a shit when someone comments on the economic disparity in their country, corruption etc, but if you mention the word Tibet, they are all on to you and start ganging up on you. Since there are so many of these comments, it's hard to counter everyone of them, so the best thing to to do ignore them. great to see that you're holding your own. great vid. I would love to go to Tibet someday but only if my safety is garaunteed. I live in the UK too!!

A person who expressed his/her political views in public or online should be ready for the opposite opinions even attacks. Seeing the military everywhere should give you a clue. The Chinese government does a lot of surveillance. There have been several uprisings in the past.

First of all I would like to thank @Karl Watson for sharing this Beautiful journey. And I also wanted to confirm that TIBET IS NOT A PART OF CHINA!!!! We the Tibetans have our own culture, language and different life style!! We are under the Chinese government but that doesn't meant our country is part of China!! Think before commenting here anything comes up in your mind!! It's not about a political but a FACT!! Thank you

The British expedition to Tibet or Younghusband expedition to Tibet began in December 1903 and lasted until September 1904. The expedition was effectively a temporary invasion by British Indian forces under the auspices of the Tibet Frontier Commission, whose purported mission was to establish diplomatic relations and resolve the dispute over the border between Tibet and Sikkim.[2] In the nineteenth century, the British conquered Burma and Sikkim, occupying the whole southern flank of Tibet. The Tibetan Ganden Phodrang regime, which was then under administrative rule of the Qing dynasty, remained the only Himalayan regime free of British influence.
The historian Charles Allen has apologetically remarked that, although the Younghusband Mission did inflict "considerable material damage on Tibet and its people", it was damage that paled into insignificance when compared "to the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese Peoples's Liberation Army in 1951 and the genocidal Cultural Revolution of 1966-1967".
簡單而言，入侵西藏是沒有問題的，英軍也曾入侵過西藏。問題是入侵後缺乏對人命的尊重、缺乏自由、缺乏對文化的保育、缺乏對知識和知識份子的尊重。這些制度上的缺點使中國文化同化力極弱，反過來讓西藏人缺少對中國的認同。就好像不發軍餉給士兵，士兵必定叛變一樣。所以問題的核心還是要保障所有人的基本權利，即生命、財產、文化和自由等。我也認識幾個蒙古人、他們是亞裔人，但寧願說俄語，認歐裔的俄國人當爹。這說明了什麼問題呢?就是在俄國當狗也比當中國人好，也就是在中國基本權利得不到保障的問題。
一個國家不可能只有一個民族，聯合王國也有愛爾蘭、蘇格蘭和威爾斯吧。中國也不只有西藏、山東人、遼寧人、廣東人都不一樣，難道就要獨立建國嗎?再往下數，我住在A 村、你住在B村，我們要獨立建國嗎?一般不會，除非解放軍來用槍指着你，要你交出全部土地和財產權利。所以基本權利的保障是十分重要的。
這些人常說FREE TIBET,難度中國內地的人的人權不重要嗎?怎麼他們不說FREE CHINA?再者，這個世界最受極權主義最深影響的地方是北韓，可是我怎也沒有看到FREE NORTH KOREA 的口號。難道他們的自由不夠藏人重要嗎?夠了吧,這些說FREE TIBET 的人，說這個不會讓你道德高尚點，只會讓人覺得你無知，尤其是那些沒到過西藏、又不會說藏語的人，只看些媒體就亂喊一通。可笑的是FREE TIBET 這句標語是英語，而不是藏語。更可笑的是他們又沒有行動，要他們武裝保護西藏他們去嗎?
一般來說，國家的少數民族除了學習母語也學國語的。據我所知威爾斯除了英語外也會威爾斯語的，我認識俄羅斯境內韃靼斯坦的人，他們也是會韃靼語，再學俄語的。沒什麼國家沒有少數民族吧。這個世界的分離主義不只有西藏，還有俄國的車臣，印度的錫金。旺楚克·滕辛·纳姆加尔還在美國建立流亡政府呢!為什麼這些人到印度錫金不會說是被印度侵占的錫金呢?那些崇拜達賴喇嘛的人怎麼不崇拜錫金流政府頭子旺楚克·滕辛·纳姆加尔呢?
當然最重要的是中華人民共和國和美國關係太差、人權太差。中國政府侵犯人權的紀錄太差了，在資訊發達的今天紙是包不住火的，改革是必需的。但是必需要理解中國比南斯拉夫更複雜，中國解了體，甚至民主分權過了火，必然伴隨着戰爭，但些這樣喜歡西藏獨立的人，不要在圍觀，不如在他們獨立後加入藏軍和中國軍隊決一死戰。我是支持你們這樣做的。
事實上，民族矛盾有這麼尖銳嗎?西藏人都承認他們祖先是羌族人，這不就是中國人嗎?很多民族矛盾是西方媒體挑起的，西藏人武裝獨立了，解放軍來維護共產黨主子的利益，一定會來平叛的，後來只會成為炮灰而已，我看這是西方年年月月日日鼓動西藏獨立的原因。
