VIETNAM | Solo Backpacking | Ep3: Tam Coc, Hanoi, Ha Giang + Phu Quoc
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- I had 6 weeks to travel from the south to the north of Vietnam.
This 3 part documentary series captures the complete backpacking experience as I travel from Saigon up to Ha Giang.
In this final episode, I enjoy the stunning nature of Tam Coc before heading up to Hanoi to enjoy Tet Lunar.
Then I head up north to do the Ha Giang Loop before finishing my trip with a bit of sunshine on the island of Phu Quoc.

Karl Watson: Travel Documentaries.
Love your video, but doesn't matter you says is a joked or what.. but at 28:23 YOU SHOULDN'T CURSE YOUR FRIEND LIKE THAT MAN! " this mother fucker", that is disrespectful to your friend.
Once time my friend colleague calling me that, and guesse what? I fuck the shit out of him, and quitted my job, but I think he learn his lesson well.
@@blueland9770litterally can tell that you have no friends. Stay mad
One of the only travel youtubers I’ve seen with a style, unique POV and a story to tell. He’s got what it takes. But does he have the discipline. Let’s find out.

I love the way you called "Vietnamese New Year" instead of "Chinese NY" at 21:04 . Respect !!!
Amazing work as usual :)
And i love the way you comment too.
@@afkempire9239 I also love the way you replied to my comment. 😊
Q: why don't people call French fries American fries?
A: bcz it's NOT originated in America.
Q: how about Russian dolls, can we call them Ukrainian dolls?
A: NO.
I love it too, you are very respectful local Vietnamese.

"The Fresh Air - that's enough for our life" - Perfect ending! Great series mate!
Thanks :)
@Joe Bloggs "A Certain Distance" by Sean Williams
I don't often comment but I need to let you know. I always look forward to your videos dude, that raw travel content we all know and love. The "big" channels like Lost le Blanc and the such have all just lost touch with the common man, they're not relatable at all. Nobody needs to see another 5* luxury resort or a brand new mercedes 4x4 in the UAE desert because what the majority of us are doing are hostels, homestays, night buses and mopeds. When I watch your documentaries I can fully see myself in your shoes and this is the sort of content and storyline that keeps me excited to go and travel! So remember your roots and keep up the good work mate, I'm looking forward to the next series from you!
Cheers Ryan, really appreciate it! :)
Spot on! Even though I might be to old for this, it's still the way I travel: flexible travel plan, local transportation, streetfood & hostels. The series are very relatable to a lot of travelers and the quality is very high! Can't wait for the next one ❤️
I don’t know why people love that “monsieur LeBlanc” guy, he and the Dubai vlogger “Mo Vlogs” are kind of similar. Naive and wealthy. He had been to only a few tourist traps in Vietnam and gave very quick decision about us. It’s just like you went to Paris and said the rest of France would be just like Paris. It’s childish, immature, and naive. I don’t like his crappy channel, I would rather like Mo Vlogs showing up his Lamborghini cars.
Well said. Tired of those spoiled traveler or scripted channels. 🍻
***THIS TRIP WAS FROM 27TH DECEMBER 2019 TO 8TH FEBRUARY 2020***
Several weeks before any lockdowns happened (other than in China).
Hope everyone enjoys the last episode of the series! Not everything goes to plan in this one, which sucked at the time but was a lot of fun to edit ;)
I'll be doing a live Q&A on UA-cam this Sunday 21st June at 8pm (GMT+1) if anyone's got any questions about the series, or just fancies a beer and a chat :)
Enjoy! :)
`i found your vlogs, by chance yesterday. we have just watched all 3 episodes and loved them! I have two boys who are 9 and 10 and plan to travel to vietnam next year in the school holidays, what a great way for me to show my boys what real vietnam is like, THANKYOU!!! we can't wait to watch all your other vlogs. Thank you for inspiring us x
3rd so quickly 👏👏👏
@@lunacampello thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed them :)
If 2022 is an open invite, count me in!
Michael Lecher yeah we’ll put a tour together and put it on sale, will be first come first served. But won’t go on sale til late 2021/ early 2022
Loved it as usual. I decided not to go home back to Canada and have been in Vietnam for 8 months now. I have two or three bucket list places before I go back. All of which you so wonderfully highlighted here. Hai Giang, Hanoi, Tam Coc, Phong Nha. I've been in Hue for 5+ months as I'm calling it home. Love a smaller town as I'm of a certain vintage 😉. Thanks for the tips, sorry you you didn't feel great near the end. But when you have a time limit you try to do as much as you can and hence....the results sometimes suck. Again well done! Cheers from Hue.🇻🇳/🇨🇦
Thanks! Wish I had more time to explore Hue actually, rather than just that day tour I did 😊
This was a fantastic series I really enjoyed watching, it made the world feel alive again during this insanity. Thanks karl!✌
Cheers Brandon :)
Lovely way to describe it Brandon
Completely agree 👍
I was transported to another world for 3 hours. Thank you Karl. Can't wait for Covid lockdowns to end. Vietnam is now definitely at the top of my list of places to visit. Had to watch all 3 episodes; quality is phenomenal. Keep up the amazing work man!
Thanks very much 😊
My favourite channel on UA-cam atm. Bringing back all my memories of travelling the country I fell in love with, Vietnam!! Providing me with many many fun flashbacks bro. Great work
Cheers Jamie
A truly wonderful 3-part series on VN Karl. For me it was bittersweet because I so looked forward to seeing it yet sad when it ended. I agree with your decision to salvage the Phu Quoc Island part of your trip was a wise one. I couldn't help thinking that my country sent 18 and 19 year old kids to fight their way through that beautiful landscape carrying a rifle instead of being able to exult in its beauty. I grieve for them.
“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
Awesome as ever! Thank you for sharing your life ❤️
that's how I travel.
I've travelled all around the world, experienced ups and downs and really miss travelling in this lockdown times, but this series brought me back. Pure life!
Vietnam is always one of my favorite backpacking country in southeast Asia. I was there in the south and north and I'm going to visit the middle of Vietnam next year! This video reminds me of all my beautiful experiences there. Most of the places you went I also visited. btw! thanks for this video.
"the fresh air - that is enough for our life" ... great ending mate...
Cheers, that guide nailed it with that speech
These videos have inspired me at the age of 45 to go on my first backpacking holiday, heading to Vietnam in July with my sixteen-year-old son (his first backpacking trip too) to do a North & Central tour.
I really enjoyed your journey, and learned heaps from it. I haven't been to Vietnam yet but watching your videos I can not wait to go, thanks dude from Australia
Cheers Jimmy 👍
Great series mate, Vietnam looks amazing. Definitely will be visiting soon. 👍🏻
Cheers Freddie 👍
very pleased, welcome to Vietnam!!
Vietnamese here who gets stuck in quarantine in the US! I haven't been back home for over a year and your videos really help me cure my homesickness.
Vietnam, a fantastic place and people..Changing rapidly..
Was great to watch this trip whilst hunkered down mid winter Melbourne.. So grateful for all the journey's have had in years gone by, such awesome and enlightening experiences that show we really are a connected humanity..😍
What is winter in Melbourne like? Maybe you are happy with your loved one
Well said, westerners are so privileged to travel, nice to see a You Tuber who doesn't think its a God given right. Great series.
Cheers 😊
Welcome to My country, I’m so glad that you had a good time here with your friends and I hope someday you’ll be back here ❤️❤️
Thanks, I will :)
I’ve seen loads of travel youtubers but you definitely deserve a top spot. Real content producer, storyteller and entertainer. Fair amount of fun, history, introspection and just plain sightviewing
. Great job man, would love to meet you on a trip some day and have a beer. Cheers
Came across your channel a few hours ago just by chance ,and I've literally binged watched your trip to Vietnam. The country look epic and your vlog as totally broke down my misconception s about Vietnam. The place is simply beautiful .Love your laid back style of vlogging, you really are taken on a adventure while watching ,with no mention of subscription or clicking bells by you ,because of that I will !!
Brilliant ending , wise words, made really think what a privilege it is to travel that now feels like a very distant universe. Anyway, the view from that Dragon monument temple over the islands was insane, love all the drone shots in this part. The cable car and just overall beach vibes in Pho Coc definitely makes me want to visit that place, but so if not more does you potential 2022 Vietnam trip, which now I’d want to be in on
Would be amazing to have you on the trip 👍
I’ve been watching travel vlogs for years and this 3 part series is definitely one of the best I’ve ever seen. Watching this has put Vietnam on my next travel destination far above anywhere else. Thanks for the amazing job and sharing!.
Thanks very much 😊
Yeah this has been a great series Karl.
I loved Vietnam but I didn’t plan on going back for a few years
But after watching this I’m currently in the process of trying to talk my girlfriend into going back next year!
Well done again mate and congratulations on hitting 100k subs.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is the best travel channel on UA-cam 👍
Thanks very much mate!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the ending. Such an important reminder.
Karls ability to bring a tear to my eye in a travel video is unmatched, loved the perspective at the end! Thanks again
Cheers Adam 👍
OMG i have seen 3 of your videos ab Vietnam, it’s so amazing
Thanks :)
Karl l cannot find enough words to Thankyou for this movie length series we have had the privilege to enjoy and share with you in beautiful Vietnam. The appreciation we will have for the ability to travel and the freedom to do so should never be forgotten after this all ends. You are a wonderful human. Thanks so much.🙏
Thanks very much 😊
We're super lucky people. We don't need to live in a tunnel for even one day. The fresh air, that's enough for our life. Gosh.. these words 🌸
The best person to transport Vietnam
Hey Karl, loved your videos, please keep doing them --- I was on Phu Quoc for two weeks in 1996, before mass tourism, two guest houses on the island then and very basic amenities-- two flights a week from Saigon and I loved every minute of it-- most days I was the only person on the beach, followed by eating super cheap seafood and beers in bamboo huts along the beach... oh for a simpler time--- also pre internet, so it was a total surprise when I got there... cheers
Sounds awesome!
Thanks to Video, the foreigner can understand Vietnam- My country . How peaceful and stunning it is. You recommend the landscape, local food, traditional culture and the kind people to the world.
Welcome to Vietnam 🇻🇳
Thank you 😊
Hit the nail on the head with those last words mate. I know for sure ill never take for granted every day i get to spend away again evan the days when im stuck at my house in thailand ill still appreciate just being there away from the rat race. Sometimes i envy my family for living there but they dont have the money or opportunity to travel elsewhere nd see the rest of the world like we do so thank you for reminding me how lucky we are
Cheers mate 👍
Loved your travels in Vietnam, it brought back so many memories of our trip 7 years ago. We are elderly and did not do the things you youngsters did, but what we did was marvellous, and like you, the nightlight for us was Hoi An, and Hue,
Thanks for the memories, cheers!

Karl, you are epic! You are living my wildest dream. Thank you for showing me (us) the many beauties of Vietnam.
Wow. Your trip was amazing! Makes me want to go back to Vietnam to travel throughout the whole country!
Another epic series! Didn't even notice the change in camera quality, even after you mentioned it. The story and flow of the episodes is what keeps you glued to the screen.
Cheers Calum
I am Vietnamese- American and I love your videos of my country. Beautiful country. You have visited Vietnam more than me. Great job .... for the video. Love them. 1000 likes
Thanks Tom :)
Absolutely amazing 3 part series man! I feel ya on the vacation after a vacation. A friend invited me on a crazy fast paced SE Asia trip. He planned EVERYTHING, invited me and I just tossed him cash for all the planes, buses and hostels. In 45 days, we had 11 one way flights, mostly at like 7am so we could land and enjoy the next city the same day. Zero time to rest! Last place was Echo Beach in Bali for 2 nights...until he left. I wanted to relax more so I gave myself 5 days on Gili Air to just snorkel, eat, and drink. It was much needed!
That sounds intense!! Great place to chill at the end though 😊
I love Vietnam from Philippines🤗🇵🇭
Excellent Vietnam series. Was there about 5 years ago and would love to go back. Especially Tam Coc, which I did not visit, which looks amazing. Funny to see Hanoi empty of people, was crowded and noisy in March when I went. Enjoy your travels.
Cheers Steven, yeah it was super weird Hanoi being a ghost town.
Thanks for a great video. I was in Vietnam last year and the friendliness of the people and amazing food really made the visit stand out.
Cheers, yep couldn’t agree more 😊
Great speech at the end there, I fully agree. Like you, I've had the privilege to travel all around the world (budget/backpacking) and I feel like one of the luckiest people alive. The memories of all those trips are the most precious things I have and I'm so happy I invested in travel instead of material things.
Exactly :)
What a perfect time to post a travel video. We're all stuck at home for the foreseeable future, but at least we can kind of feel like we're travelling while watching these videos.
Glad it provided an escape 😊
I’ve recently come across this series and it’s honestly made me fall in love with Vietnam even more. I’m a 2nd generation Vietnamese American and have always dreamed of going to the country where my family is from. Thank you for such an amazing insightful look to Vietnam. Looking forward to binge watching all your other travel series. Much love!
Amazing Episodes of your 6-week solo backpacking mate! I have been watching your videos attentively. Took some notes for my upcoming 7-week trip to Vietnam. I have been there 10 times, but I am still learning the best ways to travel the country and your videos are the best out of all I have seen! Your time and effort in putting together these documentary series are so greatly appreciated! Cheers!!
Great documentary! Perfectly paced - didn’t feel like an hour at all!
Thanks Peter :)
Thank you for this - I've been craving Vietnam (and travel) since lockdown began and I'd exhausted all the mainstream stuff. Man, I miss travel!
This is the best episode of the three!! No wonder it's your favorite too. The arial landscape scenes are so amazing. 😍 Also the bike trail, the rains, the cable car experience, the fun at the beach. Could feel all the thrill along with you. What makes your videos more special is sharing true experiences of travel, goof ups and plan changes, which is an inevitable part of every travel memories. Had lot of fun watching this series!!
Thanks very much! :)
Your comment that it is a privilege to travel is so true. I am also fortunate to have been born in a country which has enabled me to have a good education and to earn a reasonable living. I am now retired and travel 50% of the year. I use hostels and, so many times, I hear “ it’s not fair, I wanted to visit ....... but it’s a holiday/closed/transport not running”. Ok, change your plans. Your films are informative and real. Thank you
Thanks 😊
I was feeling a bit meh because I was planning to be travelling Vietnam this time of the year in 2021. So I watched this series over the last two days in my deserted workplace. Absolutely beautifully captured and exactly the way of travel I like. I watched some parts twice because of the beautiful shots. Not sure if i'm now less or more sad, but thank you so much for making this!
Hope I can follow your footsteps in 2022.
Thanks very much glad you liked it :)
Furlough life means waking up to good things to watch on UA-cam. This is right up there. Another great series Karl 👌🏾👍🏾
Thanks very much :)
I stayed in that same hostel a year ago, very nice place. I love Hanoi
Ry3ut
Loved this! The drone footage of Ninh Binh was fantastic. It truly is spectacular though the Ha Giang is a whole new level. Hopefully in 2022 you can soak in the views of the loop and be completely blown away. Once again thanks for bringing back the fond memories
Cheers buddy 😊
My man. Your videos are incredible!!!! You were meant for this. Safe journeys my friend and thank you for showing me the world!
Your episodes deserve a spot in Netflix! So, I'm wondering, seriously only 103k subscribers? Come on, people!
Anw, not all countries in Southeast Asia are possible to drink beer wherever and whenever you want. In Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and even Singapore, not all places serve you beer.
I think Tam Coc is more beautiful and interesting than Ha Giang.
Wow! You have had a lot of pleasure time to across the Vietnam. I wish having time to discover across the country like you, even I was born there . Have more fun in Vietnam. Stay safe and stay healthy. (From California, USA)
Amazing! Your final words in this were really touching, travelling is indeed a privilege 🙏
Thanks 😊
Amazing series Karl. Thank you. So many funny moments. Loved the James and Paddy jokes, haha. I can't wait for the next series. I will try to tune in on Sunday evening.
See you then 👍
how refreshing it is to see someone that is humble, genuine and entertaining. well done!
Thanks :)
I did a similar trip around the same time in december 2019. Thanks for bringing back the good vibes! I cant wait to get back in 2022... if possible. I hope its still mostly the same as before and not too many people had to close shop.
Despite some (tech) difficulties, this is maybe your best ep. ever.
Combination of images, storytelling, nice editing and humour at its best.
5 golden stars for this one.
Thanks Johan 👍
Totally agreed with your decisions made during this trip. There's always next time and your health comes first
Exactly! Cheers :)
the quality of this and your personality makes this worth millions
I've just discovered your channel, and it's the first channel where after watching just 3 videos, I've already recommended it to every backpacker I know. I can't believe this is free on UA-cam. You've captured the entire feeling of solo backpacking so well; the highs *and* the lows. Thank you so much for the time and effort you've put into this series. I can't wait to watch all your other videos now!
I love my country very much :( cannot wait to get back after lockdown , from Australia as a international student is stucking with corona viruss :>
Long Long me too ;((
Your documentaries are just so great that I can’t stop watching them and I’m so thankful that I found your channel.
Thanks very much 😊
Definitely one of the truest travel documentary channel.
Amazing inspiration, thank you for sharing Vietnam. Me and a friend want to go when travel is possible and safe again, and this will help to decide our route.
Your stance on self care is beautiful, and listening to your body is essential, not just in travel.
Bon voyages.
Best moment in the clip is 27:45 to 30 :30 -- drinking beer in the rain. That's a joy of life, simple.
Perfect way to start out the weekend. Cheers
Enjoy :)
Ahhh yeahhhh
I think this is one of your best videos. So many beautiful sights, great music choices, fun people - both native and fellow backpackers. Really makes me want to go back to Vietnam.
The whole part of biking around that glorious setting finding beer wherever you want is magnificent.
Unreal series! You never fail to entertain, cant wait for the next chapter.
Thank you :)
This documentary series was absolutely phenomenal! I visited Vietnam for 3 weeks with 4 friend in december/january, and this took me right back. Thank you! Can't wait to travel again! We went from Hanoi > Hue > Motorbike via Laos border to Hoi An > Phu Quoc > Cat Ba > Hanoi > Ha Giang. Lots of familiar places!
Sounds like a good trip 😊
what a wonderful series. missing a lot from my Vietnam trip last year. - cheers! from the Philippines 🇵🇭
I Love you
Another banger, and you're one of the most humble and honest people making these travelling videos. Mass respect!
Cheers Dave 😊👍
Firstly well done Karl! Knew that you were going to grow big one day. I've so enjoyed watching your travel documentaries and have been inspired by all your journeys across Asia and around the world all this time since 300+ subs and your genuine and honest outlook and energy that comes with backpacking and travelling. You're a legend man, may you continue to grow throughout your adventures and hope to you join/meet you one day with my brother in 2022
Thanks very much mate for all support over the years, really appreciate it :)
Another great series with the highs and lows of your trip to Vietnam - the cable car on the island also looked epic. You are right Karl - travel is a privilege. Thanks for keeping it real.
Cheers 😊
I have lived and worked in Vietnam for 2 years now, and seeing this series has inspired me to book a little trip in 2 weeks up to Hoi an and explore it a bit more this time around, should be nice and quiet as international borders are still shut!
And will definitely visit that Irish bar this time around!
Excellent series mate 💪
Cheers, enjoy a pint there for all of us! :)
Awesome sequences, i am there every year at my family....its nice to see how many foreigners are intrested in the country and the culture 👍
Karl please don't stop traveling, coz I can travel so I am living my dreams from yours.,,
I really enjoyed your three part segment to Vietnam. I am a dog show judge and I will soon go to Vietnam to judge in Hanoi. Now, thanks to your travel log, I want to visit the whole country as well as going to Siem Reap . Thanks for all your diligence in making these videos.I am truly appreciative.
Thanks, good luck with your trip :)
Tks you bro from vietnam wiht love🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳
I watch this in my bath tub drinking beer while it rains outside. Almost like I'm on a trip myself. Great series!! Now I feel like joining when you go back there. Hope you still got some material to entertain us all and till it's TRAVEL TIME AGAIN!!!
one of the best travel videos i saw in a while. I never thought going to Vietnam before. But wow what a beautiful country. Amazing Channel . I have been bing watching all your videos. It has been keeping me sane in this crazy lock down time.
Thanks, glad they’ve provided some sanity 😊
Been away from my country for so long for studying abroad, now watching ur vids make me homesick dude. Great travel POV right there
Amazing series as usual. Your previous videos inspired me to backpack around South East Asia, Vietnam was my favourite country! I had a few tears watching this series remembering the people I met and had adventures/crazy nights with. Thanks Karl, looking forward to what's next!!
Cheers Nick 😊👍
Love your comment about luck at the end. It's easy to get down and frustrated when things don't go your way, but when you think about how incredible it is that we are alive, at this time, comfortably watching UA-cam... crazy. Anything is possible. Loved the videos, can't wait until you release new content. I'll happily pacify myself with some of your old videos that I've never seen before! Cheers.
Cheers Jack :)
Bạn rất đẹp trai và có tài
Beautifully Documented Karl. I just felt like I am also travelling and experiencing the stunning landscape of Vietnam
Thanks :)
Thanks for to sharing with us your tour in Vietnam. Great tour and much of scenery to go by in Tam Coc similar in Phong Nha and am impressed with the Vietnam people on their farming practice of helping each other as a community.
Amazing 3 part series. Loved the beautiful scenery. Can not wait till your next adventure. Stay safe mate..👍
Cheers Marcus :)
Well done Karl, Certainly different from Marrocco. What i so enjoyed again was your honesty in recording your feelings as you travel and the Vietnamese folk who seem so kind and helpful. The recording is different and reflects more the chances, plus the wet weather lol?
Thanks for taking us all along on the trip and sharing your happiness and sorrowa,
Cheers Paul 😊👍
Beautiful series. We’d love to explore SE Asia one day too. Great to see it from before, full of people!
That was exceptional blogging. We reminisced about our Dec-Jan 2020 trip, my husband and I went with our 5 kids 25-11 years old. I loved the tour guide at the end “we are happy to breathe the air” plus your attitude is ours we’re grateful we have travelled and will savour every moment of future travel.
Thanks very much :)
Wow 59 minutes that's amazing
