This just shows how great of an actor Steve Carrell is. He masters comedy, vulnerability and emotion at the same time, and turns it all into lovely moments. Not many actors can do that.
he's smirking because he's the one character in the whole movie who desperately believed in true love. when his parents broke up, he still fought for them to come back together. later on, during the fight scene, he's heartbroken, and then doubts everything he's ever believed about love. and finally in this one amazing scene, he sees his parents laugh together, and it gives him hope. it shows him what he believed about love was true
And it shows you no matter how old you are, you can be in love. Regardless if he was 13 or not, he still loved Jessica and he believed in that. I respected it
And, of course Cal learned the slap from Jacob who had slapped Cal twice when they first became friends. Now Cal was returning the gesture - but now Cal was in the superior position as Hannah's dad.
I mean Jacob originally starts helping Cal because he reminds him of his father, so him getting told to be good (with a slap to remember) by his new father figure... feels just right. This is a good movie.
What always impresses me is the variety of roles he can play on such a high level. Most actors are either comedic actors or drama actors. Block buster actors or indie academy award movie actors. He on the other hand can really do it all
This is the movie my high school sweetheart and I saw when she graduated in 2011. we’ve been together 8 years going on 9 now trying to save up for a home and a family currently. It’s not many times you get to step back and realize someone means so much to you. We both just watched it again and remembered what matters. Love, struggling and building a family. All in all I just hope anyone who reads this is happy or is looking for happiness, if you can’t find it then we are all here for you, this is the internet after all.

The last line of the film always gets me...such a beautiful moment! Gives me the chills! This movie has to have been one of the best romantic comedies in recent years. One of the best endings to a film I have ever seen!
Despite the movie's funny bits, this is ultimately such a depressing story when you think about it. The wife cheated and basically ruined their marriage, scarring the kids along the way. Now they'll be stuck with this infidelity for the rest of their lives, whether they "forgive" it or not. It will never be the same. The feelings never as pure as they originally were. Such a sad movie.
@@nickmotionYour are 100% correct the movie isn't an episode of Mickey Mouse where everything is all rainbows and sunshines all the time. The wife cheats and ruins the marriage and possibly leaves a stain on her kids and family forever. But Cal wasn't the perfect husband either, just being present isn't always enough. He stopped trying to do fun things with his wife and was just coasting along in the marriage. I concur and acknowledge that is no reason to be unfaithful to your spouse but I think this movie did a great job on capturing real life scenarios while sprinkling some humor in it which I think is extremely hard task. What also makes this ending so damn good is the fact that it feels real and authentic, look at us both taking the time out of our days to discuss/write our opinions; thats because of the vulnerability the movie expressed and that's what makes it feel so real. It leaves the outcome of there relationship in the laps of the audience's imagination by us not knowing/seeing if they ultimately get back together which leaves some people with HOPE and I think leaving people with HOPE is why so many people enjoy the ending. It gives people something to long for in a world that isn't always kind to everyone.

@@Winskl9010 Oh, well thanks for your opinion. I actually haven't seen this movie in about 11 years since I've made this comment, so I honestly don't even remember how it goes anymore, but I DO subtly remember that last scene about the ice cream. Which actually STILL touches me when I think of it to this day (although it's a bit hazy of a memory) because that one scene is separate from all of the B.S./drama/Heartbreak that occurred throughout the movie prior to that moment. If I watched it again, it would likely STILL be one of my fav Rom-Coms/"Dramadies", regardless, ngl, because of the writing 😂.
Late af but there is a reason I always watch this. The movie showed real love. Raw, unadulterated love. The kind of love that sends you down a dark path but some how the same love that shows you the way to a better path. Her giving the kid the pictures had nothing sexual about it. It did for him a little but ultimately it was the connection that they both had experienced in the film. He had really been hurt even though people told him he was too young to feel love and she realized in the end that even though he was 13, he really did fall in love with her in his own way. It was her acceptance of his young, puppy love that makes this scene so powerful. Of course we all know he got over his crush and she moved on with her life but this scene itself makes the point of the whole movie... that love is irrational, hurtful, vindictive, blissful, beautiful, exciting, and dark all at the same time. I love this movie.
You don't know that he got over his crush and that she moved on. It could be that when he got older he did come for her and things worked out, you don't know.
I love the ending too actually. If there's an infidelity in a marriage, I support either way what the couple decides to do. In this case, it's clear the two characters still love each other despite what happened.
That little kid is more ballsy than most adult men, including myself. I know it's just a fictional movie, buuuuut... it's sorta inspiring. The entire movie is inspiring...
The beauty of the movie stems from the idea that they are all lost in the beginning but they manage to rediscover the importance of love and the value of true feelings and relationships. It might be true that noone in the movie resembles you but you still might get the chance to put yourself in their position and hope that they get it right in the end. I'm not ok with cheating but people do mistakes all the time so it's not surprising or rare.
When I watched it I cried when she said:"I'm glad you bought me that ice cream!" that is such a cute heart warming moment and with the music PERFECT! :) love it...
Older girl crushes are legit. I remember having the biggest crush on my teacher's aide when I was in like 3rd grade. What it must feel like to have your crush jump start your adult libido like that, I can't even imagine. Must feel like a dream come true. This kid was really cool too. He owned his feelings like a boss. And what an end for the crap he's gone through, struggling with puberty, his first love, and a very upsetting parental situation. FINALLY he gets something to be happy about. Such a satisfying end for this character.
@@smithsunleashed not just creepy but I'm quite certain illegal, in the UK at least if I'm not mistaken you can get put on sex offenders' register for doing that.
I actually love the unexpected implication that Emily and Cal get back together. After an infidelity takes place, I really think it’s up to the couple to decide if it’s best to end the relationship or work to fix it. Cal dated other women, but it’s obvious he was still in love with Emily and wanted to make things work.
It really up to Cal tbh whether or not he wants a new relationship with Emily. A new relationship, because the old one is dead burnt down by Emily herself.
I know this is like 4 years old but I married my math tutor. she was 20 I was 15. I didn't marry her till I was 21 but still married 2 kids. I had my own business at 16. I am a carpenter she is a nurse. Love is love.
shes a red haired woman, the lyrics say "She's the only woman you ever loved, that got burnt by the sun too often when she was young..". I know it seems dark, but to me it gives this happy seeming ending a really sad note which makes the ending even better. They overcame all the big problems and finding back to each other but the ending leaves it open in my opinion if they are able to live to an old age together... Great movie and one of my favourite romantic comedies
Just watched the movie and the final song bothered me enough to seek an explanation. Yours was helpful and underscores the bitter-sweetness of love. In the end someone will be alone even in a perfect marriage yet the time together is worth it.
Okay, but even though this movie was a B, maybe a B+ movie, this ending song was so perfect. Because if you listen to the lyrics, it's about three different men. An older brother, a father, and a grandfather. You've got the youngest who's restless and needs to settle down (Ryan Gosling's character), the father who's getting a divorced and feels lost(Steve Carell's character), and the grandfather who's only loved one woman (ironically enough Robbie) and doesn't know how to live his life without her. And there's more to the song than just that, but I'm so glad I got dragged to see this movie with my friends back when it came out.
t's been 3 years but your explanation of the final song in Crazy Love helped with my question: why this song that trails off with the mention of cancer spreading to her body and her blood. Love surely encompasses it all.
I went thru divorce this past year and together we have a 13 and 16 year old. This movie and scene particularly completely resonates with me from the acting down to the music. Just genius.
Oh my god people, lay off about the pictures. It was a simple, bittersweet ending. He knew that their age differences were so big and that there was no chance for them to be together. She simply gave him a picture to fantasize about during his high school years. There is almost no possibility they'll ever be together but she wanted to give him something that she'd never give him in real life. It was bittersweet and funny. And when he looked at his parents and smiled, it showed that he still believed in love and saw it again in his parents.
I don't look at it that way. I think what she was telling him is there was a chance. She was saying don't give up, when you are old enough come for me...that is the impression that I got.
I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that the song that ends the whole movie is one of the saddest songs ever written "It was the only woman you ever loved That got burnt by the sun too often when she was young And the cancer spread and it ran into her body and her blood And there’s nothing you can do about it now" and then a childrens choir singing a happy melody
Maybe because the woman he loved is now dead. Now he can choose to move on or try dating the mother of his children but the his first love is dead to him. I believe that's the message that the contrasting song was trying to get across.
I totally understand why he was disgusted with Jacob becoming his daughter's bf. He's seen Jacob's methods of manipulation, and his proficiency in them. However, it's still better than not knowing at all, because many people (especially innocent looking ones) have far darker secrets hidden behind their facades. Initially emotions drew him crazy, but in the end he understood 0:14
It might... or might NOT have been a good idea for her to share those pictures with a young teenage boy with raging hormones & a crush. Because Jessica gave Robbie those photos, I think it's pretty safe to say that his parent's laundry bills & the Kleenex tissue company sales figures - skyrocketed later that year!
🌟 I would have to say, that this movie; "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is absolutely my most favourite (comedy/romance) of all time! 👍 * Especially when Ryan Gosling is told to take his shirt off, and she says, "Really? It's like you're photo shopped"! 😂 * LoL! LOVE IT! 😀
@@robinburrell4421the people defending this or romanticizing it are weird as fuck, I feel like I’m in bizzarro land with a lot of this comment section.
Perfect ending scene. Robbie is so much more mature than a lot of men in their entire life will be!!!! Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Steve Carrell of course are amazing just like we're used to them :) And a beautiful song.... I could cry about all this everytime because it's just so beautiful. It makes happy just watching it.
@@Flowerz__Yeah and she’s weird as fuck for that. If high schoolers knew she did that it would be one of the few good reasons to ostracize a kid. That shit would carry over to college, too-“she gave a thirteen year-old a physical copy of a nude when she was damn near 18”.
My favourite movie :) Was so surprised when I saw it at the cinema because I'll be honest I dont often relate Steve Carrell to good films but this was so brilliantly written with a brilliant twist at the end and was just so lovingly true to life in so many ways :) I'm so glad the parents didnt get back together on screen - a bit too much of a 'typical american ending' that way. Love it
I know this movie alludes to Cal and Emily getting back together, but so many people go back to unfaithful partners because of "love". She didn't love him when she cheated and threw all trust out the window. He'll resent her for the rest of his life. Cheating is and will always be the kiss of death in any relationship, even if people "move on".
Essentially, this song seems to be a very personal insight into a family. It almost seems to be a chronicle of three generations of men in one family... The older brother is young and restless, perhaps absent and missed by his sister and others. Whilst the older father, typical of many baby boomers, is a late in life divorcee, isolated by the separation and struggling to find any peace. The grandfather, also suffers from isolation and separation, but unlike the father, and typical his generation, he has been widowed after his much loved wife died of cancer. In some ways this song details how the nature of our relationships have changed within our society over the last century. Our grandparents never really considered divorce, they committed themselves throughout their lives, a lot of baby boomers embrace divorce however, which leaves many in generations x and y (their children) in a slightly restless sort of position (like the older brother) when it comes to their own relationships. PS: I stole this from someone else but I believe it wholeheartedly and it would seem to fit pretty damn well in this final scene. The young boy is looking on at his mom and dad and able to believe in the true love that exists when two people fight FOR one another rather than fight WITH one another and immediately fall back to divorce like so many relationships do nowadays.
Why is nobody talking about the fact that this happy ending is set to the lyrics 'and the cancer spread and it ran into her body and her blood and there's nothing you can do about it now.'? 3:40
I had the same reaction and came here to find out why that beautiful but really sad song at the end. After reading comments here, I think it's about how crazy and stupid love is. We all want it, but even in the most perfect form of love, there will ultimately be loss. One of the spouses will die first . . . It's a really heavy concept to lay on at the very end of a rom-com, yet it elevates the movie.
I got the impression at the end that Jessica had a change of heart about Robbie. That she was saying to him when you are old enough you can come for me.
If you look beyond the superficial to what the movie is actually communicating, you'll see it's far more than any of those movies. It is a movie that is calling for people to stay married to "the one" and never give up fighting for it.
This just shows how great of an actor Steve Carrell is. He masters comedy, vulnerability and emotion at the same time, and turns it all into lovely moments. Not many actors can do that.

I don't look at it that way. I think what she was telling him is there was a chance. She was saying don't give up, when you are old enough come for me...that is the impression that I got.
I saw it that way to. here are the pictures until your old enough then you get to see for yourself.
there is literally only a 4 year age gap so there is a chance.
I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that the song that ends the whole movie is one of the saddest songs ever written
"It was the only woman you ever loved
That got burnt by the sun too often when she was young
And the cancer spread and it ran into her body and her blood
And there’s nothing you can do about it now"
and then a childrens choir singing a happy melody
Maybe because the woman he loved is now dead. Now he can choose to move on or try dating the mother of his children but the his first love is dead to him. I believe that's the message that the contrasting song was trying to get across.
the saddest song is Mo Bamba
This is my favorite rom com. It was such a good time, 2010-2011. I was so happy then.
"Take care of her"
*SLAP*
XD
It really makes you want to know what happens! Rooting for Steve :)
Really hope that Steve moves on with his life and finds another woman and they live happily ever after.
It might... or might NOT have been a good idea for her to share those pictures with a young teenage boy with raging hormones & a crush.
Because Jessica gave Robbie those photos, I think it's pretty safe to say that his parent's laundry bills & the Kleenex tissue company sales figures - skyrocketed later that year!
Robbie Cameron or the water bill 👀
That's what I thought
Sooo many value packs of socks
@@fredericklopez7276 'You, Me & Dupree'? 🤔
She gave him the photos she took? How did I not get that the first time I watched this 🤦♂️
🌟 I would have to say, that this movie; "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is absolutely my most favourite (comedy/romance) of all time! 👍
* Especially when Ryan Gosling is told to take his shirt off, and she says,
"Really? It's like you're photo shopped"! 😂
* LoL! LOVE IT! 😀
forever my favorite movie scene. love it.
that’s really effing creepy she gave robbie those pictures, does no one else think so???
that’s hollywood for you, they normalize this kinda stuff
It absolutely is. It was kind of cute in a movie but in real life it would not be at all.
@@robinburrell4421the people defending this or romanticizing it are weird as fuck, I feel like I’m in bizzarro land with a lot of this comment section.
@@TheNinja94awould not see it nowadays weird af
It's weird as fuck
Her smile is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen
Absolute perfect song selection and editing
haha i always get maassively choked up at Julianne Moore's final line..
Perfect ending scene. Robbie is so much more mature than a lot of men in their entire life will be!!!! Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Steve Carrell of course are amazing just like we're used to them :)
And a beautiful song....
I could cry about all this everytime because it's just so beautiful. It makes happy just watching it.
well robbie isn't real
It’s a great story for a movie but in real life what he’d been doing would be considered harrassment, not maturity
@@thebatman.but what did she give him at the end? she gave him a pic of her snatch or something?
@@Flowerz__Yeah and she’s weird as fuck for that. If high schoolers knew she did that it would be one of the few good reasons to ostracize a kid. That shit would carry over to college, too-“she gave a thirteen year-old a physical copy of a nude when she was damn near 18”.
2:25 ohhhh hello devil, I knew you were behind all this shit
holy shit. her eyes.
Loop4X It's probably the gold glare from the handles on her glasses xD
Love this song - and this movie!!!
Sharon Miller song name pls
blood - middle east
My favourite movie :)
Was so surprised when I saw it at the cinema because I'll be honest I dont often relate Steve Carrell to good films but this was so brilliantly written with a brilliant twist at the end and was just so lovingly true to life in so many ways :)
I'm so glad the parents didnt get back together on screen - a bit too much of a 'typical american ending' that way.
Love it
I’m fascinated by a sequel
I know this movie alludes to Cal and Emily getting back together, but so many people go back to unfaithful partners because of "love". She didn't love him when she cheated and threw all trust out the window. He'll resent her for the rest of his life. Cheating is and will always be the kiss of death in any relationship, even if people "move on".
that's why the rom-com ended there
It just depends. Personally it would end it for me, but some people just bounce back. They just do. People are different.
Thank you, thank you, so so so so so much for putting the song on there!! love it and have been trying to find it for ages
Knew this song before the movie, watched the movie not knowing it was in there, watched final scene, DIED OF HAPPINESS.
I didn't realize this song is also played in "It's kind of a funny story" movie.
I really like this song
FYI, the song is called Blood by a band called The Middle East. Great song but not sure how it fits into this film as the song is about dying.
The song is about guilt and regret. And a perfect choice for the scene.
18andONEGIANTLOSS Good point, I didn't see it from that perspective
Heard this song in "It's Kind of a Funny Story" as well. Sad to know that the band actually broke up.
This movie is amazing..so touching and the acting is so real great job by the cast....very underrated film
Why is nobody talking about the fact that this happy ending is set to the lyrics 'and the cancer spread and it ran into her body and her blood and there's nothing you can do about it now.'? 3:40
HAHAHAH I love his face when he opens the letter.
the ending just makes me feel so good inside :)
why the hell did they choose such a sad song for this ending? it' s so weird hearing about dying alone and cancer when you watch this
I had the same reaction and came here to find out why that beautiful but really sad song at the end. After reading comments here, I think it's about how crazy and stupid love is. We all want it, but even in the most perfect form of love, there will ultimately be loss. One of the spouses will die first . . . It's a really heavy concept to lay on at the very end of a rom-com, yet it elevates the movie.
Can’t let the gang know I fk with this 🗣️🗣️
The son got the best graduation gift👍
I Fell in Love with this cute girl analeigh😩😍❤
my favorite scene in a movie ever
This song is just killllllllllllll the science, what a perfect song.
One of the best movie ive ever seen
Such a good movie..u can laugh, and cry at the same time..that is how u make a good movie
I got the impression at the end that Jessica had a change of heart about Robbie. That she was saying to him when you are old enough you can come for me.
That's why she why give him those pics 🔥🔥get this until you have 18 👌🏻
Why is nobody talking about how she giving him that photo broke at least 3 strict liability laws
I love how parents and friends threaten you about hurting their daughter/friend. And most of them don't do shit
You sound like a great guy if you have a large amount of evidence of people “not doing shit” when you hurt people’s daughters and friends. 👍🏼
One of the most underrated movies ever IMO…
"he looks like a sheepdog" that's the icing
Everyone loves a happy ending 🖤
What a perfect song to a perfect ending
If you look beyond the superficial to what the movie is actually communicating, you'll see it's far more than any of those movies. It is a movie that is calling for people to stay married to "the one" and never give up fighting for it.
A girl that took me "out of the friend zone" kissed me in the exact same spot back in 2010. So epic!!
Just watched this movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. The final scene and the song by The Middle East was fitting to say the least.
Robbie is just the cutest in this movie lol.
Hey thats danny from zathura
i'm crazy, stupid, in love with this movie.
I so love the ending !!!!!
So touching !!!
I dont get tired of this movie!!..& Blood by the middle east is amazing!
dude when he saw those nud picks i was like WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS MOVIE
The song always makes me cry
A sheep-dog... well he definitely guided his family back together that's for sure!
Last scene is illegal af 😂
She is still a minor, “technically”
Woow i didnt even know you can give nude pics as graduation gift
It's what I've been giving out for Years
What evidence do you have that they were nudes? Interesting Rorschach test, huh?
@@neilsims6819 Ey genius, what else could it have been?
@@rallysmith6403 I have no obligation to decide what else it could have been. If you claim it was pictures, the burden of proof is on you.
