I’m having a terrible time this summer with fruit flies. I’ve been taking care of my aunt who is having chemo, and haven’t been home much. I accidentally left an overripe watermelon on my kitchen table, and by the time I discovered it, I had probably 1,000 flies. I’ve caught hundreds of them on sticky traps, but they just keep reproducing! It’s driving me crazy
Get a trash bag open it and hold it open and run a scoop them all in it, take it outside far from the home and release and repeat until you captured them all🤷
I definitely believe that the fruit flies come in on the fruit, or at least the eggs do. So I scrub all fruit that comes in the house or rinse thoroughly things that you can't scrub like grapes or strawberries. Definitely cuts down the problem significantly
i tried the first funnel one with apple cider vinegar. it did the job and was barely an effort. i forgot to mention. if the flies keep showing up. use a second trap. put the first one outside and put the new one in place until they stop showing up. that worked for me.
The dish soap one actually worked. I accidentally put dish soap in one of my coffee cups to wash them later and i saw a whole bunch of fruit flies lie inside helplessly
Great video. This summer must have been the fruit flies' year: I have never seen so many fruit flies. I declared war, and use hot water as my weapon, and lots of swatting, but they just kept sending in their reinforcement. I lost the war. I never thought that I would ever be so happy to see cold weather.
Cute tricks!! Try keeping your living area (residence) super clean. When throwing the wasted fruit away (after your done eating them), wrap it up in plastic wrap, make sure no trapped air, then discard. Fruit flies always come along for the ride-no matter what.
Use a bowl, pour in acv only 4 or 5 tablespoons mix in some sugar, add 2 drops of dish washing liquid, stir.wrap with clear plastic wrap, poke tooth pick holes several, traps hundreds in one day, change out when needed....
Another way to get rid of fruit flies is to get a styrofoam plate and some oil. 1.Add a little bit of oil to the plate 2.mix the oil around so it’s everywhere on the plate 3.Then if you see any fruit flies, swat them with the “oily styrofoam plate” and they will stick onto the plate I hope those instructions were clear 😅 I’m bad at explaining 😳
I had success with a jar trap using a funnel made from a resealable bag and a rubber band. They like the smell of vinegar (hence their name, vinegar flies). I have used ACV, red wine or balsamic vinegar, and even leftover wine or tawny port. I find that keeping my fruit bowl in the fridge helps. I also freeze citrus fruits in pieces, frozen lemon in cold drinks and frozen oranges for a cool summer snack. Old bananas and berries can be frozen for baking or smoothies.
Adding to the comment on keeping the fruit flies out of the kitchen, I'll say that I used the 50/50 wash of white vinegar and tap water. In the plastic container, after washing the bananas, were about five or six limpid, small, black objects that looked as if they were fruit flies.

Fruit fly trap-pour about an inch of apple cider vinegar in a 16 oz. glass. Add a few drops of dishwashing detergent. Add hot water to make it foam. Put it near the fruit or garbage can. The flies will land on the foam and be trapped. Make the foam again until the flies are gone. Make up more glasses of the concoction as needed.

I feel you. I wonder why its always just one tiny fruit fly that just loves to walk along your skin and is afraid of nothing even if you move around a bit - of course it will fly if you approach it on purpose. They were never interested in people before so I am surprised. Oh and one more tip. Just put some peels to a fruit plastic bag that is not totally sealed and has many folds on the entrance. Then shake the entrance and they fly deeper into the bag and close it tight. Voila! You got them all caught - except the one that prefers people to fruit peels, which goes over my head and yeah, it likes to literally just wander along your skin (propably ears too?) even if the skin is clean and dry. I do not really understand why. But the normal fruitflies are pretty easy to catch. And do not wash the fruits you put to the fridge. The moisture will turn into ice in there fast.
