Great content very informative and concise. It can be tricky understanding this time period in Ethiopia with available English language sources. And of course anything about Selassie is politically historically and spiritually charged. I can’t state enough the refreshing nature of hearing African scholars speak about African rather than Europeans that tend to centralize their world view over African affairs.

Very interesting bit of history, and well narrated. I am generally conservative by temperament, and from from my very distant place in time, location and culture I feel sorry that the Ethiopian monarchy was not able to transition to something like the British Monarchy. I recognize that I do not know if that was even possible or desirable at the time. I recall getting the sense that Haile Selassie was seen in the West as a courageous opponent of colonialism at one point. He gave a speech at the League of Nations that was very influential. Reading his Wikipedia page gives one a sense that some Westerners were somewhat excited by him as an "interesting exotic foreigner", which, although having some benefits, is not really a position you want to stay in.
I would like to know how sincere was the Marxism espoused by the members of the Derg. Marxism was a great way for a tyrant to legitimize power even if they believed none of it. The Soviet bloc and other communist powers supported Mengistu with arms and training, so it was beneficial for him. I hope there is peace and justice in Ethiopia soon, though I do not know what that would mean or how to achieve it.

H.I.M. spoke out against the European powers when they failed to intervene against Italian agression as per the League of Nations treaties and warned that they would be next to feel ltaly's wrath.
On October 4, 1963 he gave a strident speech at the United Nations General Assembly where he spoke out against racial injustice, racism, colonial imperialism and colonial aggression and exploitation, against wars of aggression by mainly European powers. This speech was turned into the 1976 anti war/racism/injustice song 'War' by Bob Marley.
He was a staunch proponent of Pan-Africanism, African unity and development and self determination and anti colonialism, and influential in the creation of the Organization Of African Unity which was headquartered in Addis Adaba the capital of Ethiopia.
He strongly supported African nations' struggles against colonialism and the apartheid in southern Africa and provided arms, funding and refuge for resistance movements from Africa and even from the Middle East like the PLO. He was a strong supporter of the ANC and other groups fighting South Africa's racist regime.
Under H.l.M., Ethiopia participated in the April 1955 Bandung Conference for Asian - African cooperation and was part of the Non Aligned Movement. He spoke out against racism in the US and linked the Civil Rights struggle with the anti colonialism struggle ongoing in Africa and other parts of the world and provided funds to Civil Rights groups.
As a leader he made mistakes, some grevious to his nation, but he was no puppet.

One big error is that emperor Selassie did *NOT* end slavery.
Slavery was ended by the italians in 1936 and strongly enforced. The Italians used ending slavery as a justification for the war so they actually did very publicly enforce the freeing of slaves (which were often somali and eritreans which helped the Italians in the war) to convince other western nations that they were the "good guys" and to not support the exiled emperor Selassie.
When the British took control during ww2 Selassie wanted to bring slavery back as it was a deep rooted tradition, he discussed with the British about it quite strongly. However the british made it clear that if he wanted to be the emperor again slavery must remain abolished.
So he claimed to have ended slavery with a public proclamation.
But really all the slaves where freed already several years before that by the italians.
There are some incredible stories about those slaves.

The formal proclamation from the Italian government in ethiopia.
      *Translated in english*

      HEAR: -
You must know that where the flag of Italy flies there is freedom. Therefore in your country slavery, of all types, is now abolished.
All the slaves who are currently in this region are now free and the buying and selling slaves is forbidden.
Anyone who contravenes the provisions of this announcement will be strictly prosecuted, as a transgressor to the orders of the Government.
Given in Adua on October 14, 1935 (and in other providences in 1936)
This document was printed in Ethiopian language and italian and distributed everywhere in the country.
All slave markets were closed any slave was allowed to go back to his tribe or to do as they wanted and anyone capturing, selling or refusing to let their slaves free was fined or arrested. Full implementation took around one year.

There's no disillusionment about Selassie's human character and limitations. The co-identification of Rastas with Haile Selassie is that it was the materialization/realization of a Black Man as Negus Negaste, or King of Kings by the order of the Lion of Judah. Making Ethiopia the land of the final Jewish Monarchy.
It is also understood by Rasta that this is insufficient to connect those titles bestowed to Christ to Deity. Rather, the legal precedent set in the Torah that would establish a Messiah need only be honored in terms of the National Sovereignty of the Ethiopia, and not in accordance with claims purported to be Old Testament by Christians that favors a mythical Iyasous.
Since the real Iyasous and his family was buried under the Theology of Saul, and the idea of a trinity had flourished through that region prior to Iyasous. It was easy for Rastafari Scholars to resurrect the original idea of Christ in Jewish Culture as a King that ascends to the throne according to the order of Melchezidek, and birth a syncretic cosmology of Western Christianity with that of Indigenous beliefs originally local to Jamaica.
I hope this separates Rastafari view of the mythology of the image of H.I.M from the historical and legislative *reality* of His Majesties Coronation.
Lastly, Let us not forget that Iyasous is *historically* acknowledged to have died as a result of the capital conviction of insurrection against Roman Occupation. Therefore, the final establishment of the Messiah by way of Legislation is finished upon His Majesties assassination, and there will never again be a Kingdom of Judah as a result of His Majesties ratified Ethiopian constitution.

The Bani Tigray, the Bani Amhara, Afar, Agaw, Harrar, Promo, Wollo are all much more older than any biblical tribe or clan. Amhara and Tigray were ruling before the biblical Solomon was ever a promise. Now just like Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia is a place consisting of Ethnic tribes, tribal confederations and clans. Unlike the house of Saud, Emperor Haile didn't unite his family with the tribes through an arrangement of marriages. That's the difference. Abdul Aziz and his brother's married a daughter and sister of every tribal shiekh and clan chieftain which brought the tribes into a personal union with the state. Our Emperor's didn't do this nor did King Solomon. But the entire commentary is 90% lies.

Good video. Btw, the description on the video said he was crowned in September 1917 while in the video you stated he was crowned in 2, November 1930 which is the correct date.

@@AFRISTORYNETWORK No worries at all. Just wanted to comment so people don't get confused. I think it's great you are doing this series now and especially giving the problems going on there with Tigray people and other violence. There is a lot of tribal violence in Africa which a lot of your videos do cover.

Actually on Sept 27 1916 He was crowned as the Crown Prince Heir Apparent, Ras and Regent Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia... while Zewditu (daughter of Menelik II) was crowned Empress at the same time replacing the delinquent Emperor Iyasu... The Ras Regent then was crowned Nigus/ King on Oct 7 1928 in a great ceremony while Zewditu remained Empress... He then became Emperor on April 3rd 1930 when Empress Zewditu passed away but the Grand Coronation Ceremony was established for 7 months later on Nov 2 1930 giving time to prepare for the guests ...

@@lijiticful Yes, he was proclaimed Crown Prince, Regent Plenipotentiary and Heir to the throne on 27 September 1916 (the same day Zauditu was proclaimed Empress). However their coronation took place on 11 February 1917 and he was then officialy crowned Le'ul-Ras Tafari which is equivalent a title of nobility equivalent to a "Royal Duke" and means Lord of Lords.

Great documentary, thanks for that. The decline of the emperor reminded me of the fall of the Russian Tsar. Like the Tsar, Selassie had it coming, because you cannot keep a population in servitude without eventual, serious consequences. Just a shame that the new regime did not do much to alleviate the people's suffering.

His majesty did more to improve the country than anyone else, the land was damaged because of the amount of chemical weapons the Italians had dropped on it , after Selassie had to hide from the Derq Russian planned mission the red terror Mingitsu killed 8 million Ethiopians in the space of 5 years

@@d_vrdlovec8724 The terrors of the Mengistu regime do not vindicate Selassie. He (Selassie) should have accelerated land reform, constitutional reform, economic modernisation and pleaded for aid to combat the Wollo famine. Had he done such things Mengistu might not have had the opportunity to seize power. Having said that, perhaps it was inevitable. In Britain we killed our King in 1649. France did the same in 1793 and Russia in 1918.

@@ladytinker42787 Debatable. African slavery was one economic driver, that's for sure. Likewise indentured labour from China - another form of slavery. And indigent tribes were destroyed or marginalised. However, for the majority of incoming people I would say America was a land of opportunity. Still is, and that includes the descendants of slaves whose prospects in the US - I would argue - are better than if they were growing up in Africa.

You worshiping a man who did not wanted to be worshiped. Ras himself said that his faith was in Jesus of Nazareth, so how can you worship someone as god when the person your worshiping has Jesus of Nazareth as his Savior. Know your history, Leonard Powell in Jamaica in the year 1930 who was a Christian took the Bible and certain portions of the scriptures that apply to Jesus of Nazareth and apply them to Ras Tafari after he was crown king of Ethiopia. Ras Tafari was a good king but it’s a shame that misguided people are worshiping him as god all because of one man, who? Leonard Powell.
