    Something important that everyone forgets when talking about this adaptation is that Studio Deen are the ones responsible for giving us the legendary voice actors for the characters we love. There's a timeline where Deen didn't make the adaptation and we didn't get all the voice actors we love.

    • @shauqiharris2772

      I can't live in a timeline where Shirou isn't voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama or Saber isn't voiced by Ayako Kawasumi. They're what made the characters iconic and I love their voices so much that if someone else voiced them I will literally cried.

    Man, I really like Shirou.
    Watching Kiritsugu pass his dream onto him- where in Fate he took it to the max. UBW is a contrast, where acceptance that not everyone can be saved was made clear to Shirou.
    what an emotional rollercoaster.

      @BTDZero 6 років тому +29

      As I recall from an interview, Nasu was ok with rewriting parts of Fate so it would flow better with Zero and so ufotable wouldn't have to re-cover ground that was established with Zero, but doing so would have indefinately delayed production, so they opted for UBW instead since that was ready to go.

    Honestly Arkada, you're not alone, because I share a very similar opinion with you and I am backing you up. Yes as an adaptation of the Fate route, 2006 is damn flawed, but so far it's still the only anime adaptation for the Fate route, which IMO has the most equal understandings for the characters as well as the best overall worldbuilding. It's the more standard type of story which could get fans acquainted to Fate before they go into the more deeper waters of Fate, and also has the most "complete" resolution of the routes. There are plotholes and spoilers due to the lack of depth for the other 2 routes, which I will admit was a flaw, but in the end I still stand that 2006 is the best beginner spot in Fate for anime fans overall too.
    You're not alone.

      I agree as well. Deen's anime is where I started with Fate and it got me interested in the bigger picture of the franchise. It is flawed, yes, but it got the basic points of the world and the characters across which is probably what newcomers need before diving in (though it does have missteps with regard to Shirou's character).
      On an unrelated note with Zero in mind, I do think that Fate's ending is the more fitting ending to follow up Zero.

      Wrong attitude to have, bucko. Its existence has practically killed any chances of the Fate route being given a good adaptation, meaning secondaries and tertiaries will always experience this very intentionally linear story out of order. Sometimes nothing is better than something.

      @@stygianskies4776 Wrong, do consider the possibility that without this and the UBW DEEN movie adaptation it wouldn't have sprung all these new adaptations by ufotable. Some people never read the visual novel and THIS is what got them into Fate, hell it got me into fate. It was probably not a successful adaptation but it got most of the job done and it might be the only adaptation of Fate we'll ever get. Besides the visual novel this is how it all of Fate began. I hope Ufotable eventually remakes Arturia's perspective with last episode attached. I don't think it has to resemble the original Fate route as long as it hits the same general basic information points somewhere along the way. Since fate as a route is designed to be mostly infodump and set up for rules and stories and motivations for later routes, they would have to change that in the first place. But i think it would be a good challenge for Nasu to try and write.
    Tsukihime is much easier to adapt(like Sakaki shounen's manga adaption which is awesome) because Arc is the clear and present focal point of the series, so even if the farside isn't detailed, you can still have a wholesome story by including elements from other routes. FSN doesn't really work in that manner. By the way, you forgot that people should read Sakaki Shounen's Tsukihime manga adaption at some point too, as Fate Zero directly references Tsukihime elements and to get perspective on that, you'd have to either suffer through JC staff Tsukihime to get a weak experience or read the visual novel which is not ideal at this point.

    • @digichu007
      @digichu007 6 років тому +3

      Yeah, that would be cool. It's too bad that the "Last Episode" was written into the visual novel for the PS2 remake, after the anime had already aired. I hope they add it to the end of Heaven's Feel Blu-rays as a "visual novel completion" like the game did when all 45 endings were viewed.

    • @MrInuhanyou123
      @MrInuhanyou123 6 років тому +9

    As someone who was lucky enough to have started with the VN, I totally agree. I used to shit all over the Deen anime on the internet and real life, even stopped one of my friends from watching it, probably killing his interest for the entire franchise in the process (I know, I'm an ass). Now that the UBW anime exists and the Heaven's Feel trilogy is on its way, I decided to revisit the Deen.anime with fresh eyes and yeah, not only is it necessary for people who want the full story without doing any reading, it's actually got some surprising attention to detail and holds up quite well in places (For instance, I used to hate that they showed that Berserker fight, but in hindsight it's got some cool foreshadowing for Heaven's Feel in it.).
    I think the reason I hated it so much is that, back in the day, it was all that there was, and I was afraid that anime-only people would be missing out on all the things that make F/SN great.
    I'd still recommend skipping Deen's version of the Caster arc (ideally watching the VN's Fate Caster scene on UA-cam instead or something) so you don't spoil yourself horribly for UBW and Heaven's Feel, but outside of that this is absolutely the best way to go about getting into Fate/Stay Night, barring just reading the VN, of course.
    "Starting with Fate/Zero is like beginning Star Wars with Episode 1!" THANK YOU. I've been saying this exact thing for years.

      I personally didn't really mind the spoilers... My only issue was how hard was it to enjoy HF due to the events of HF. (Unfortunately for me, I a sticker for details and Deen/Stay Night already kept me on guard thanks to Sakura's kidnapping. The literal flower petal on Shinji's Book sure didn't help and Rin kissing Sakura's forehead instantly screamed into my head "They're siblings aren't they.")
      (I've started playing the VN after that. Since its Realta Nua, you could play it out of order and because I wanted to save UBW for last and I basically just saw Fate route in Deen/Stay Night, I started with Heaven's Feel. Because of technical issues I lost all my data and stopped at the scene just after Nine Lives Blade Works. Didn't feel motivated to replay until recently. Thus I watched Fate/Zero.)
      What Fate/Zero does to me instead is feeling like I'm being lead astray.
      The ending of Zero had me thinking "So that boy is going to inherit Kiritsugu's dream to save the world? I wonder how he's gonna do it.", "Poor Saber... but that sunlight shining through the clouds though. Maybe her someone can finally save her heart." and "Well, Gilgamesh is still around. I wonder what epic fight scene is going to happen with him."
      Heaven's Feel pretty much shoves all three of my expectations into the shredder.
      Saber becoming Saber Alter in particular just depresses me.
      And personally I found Rider too boring to care about her being the main Servant of the Route. (I really love her in Hollow Ataraxia though).

      In Stay Night while things don't start completely okay, Shirou does develop outside of that protective mentality and Saber develops more as a character, getting a moment that is far beyond anything badass that she did in Zero

    DEEN Stay Night was my entree into fate in 06...i was one of those people just tuning into the premiere in Japan because i had seen pictures of Arturia online and i wanted to see what her anime was liket. I was not into Type Moon at the time, even though i had seen the non existent JC staff Tsukihime adaption years before that(i didn't make the connection between the two's origins until later).
    Fate Stay Night 06 still plays a special place in my heart and ignited by love for everything Type Moon, Arturia and everything in between. Sure it was flawed and DEEN really didn't put a lot of effort in, but it was still enjoyable. I even liked UBW DEEN movie for what its worth.

And i think the "spoiling" nature of FSN 06 is overstated. I didn't catch anything originally back then outside of Rin and Sakura having some kind of connection that was lightly implied. I was still very shocked when i read the VN and got what was actually going on

      Irfan Fakhrianto fate, cause Fate is part of a much much bigger whole called the nasuverse in which each series is a puzzle piece that strings together the most esoteric lore I've ever seen... and most of the series are canon glimpsing into at least 1 new aspect of the universe every time so if you want the full story, you have to watch or read all of them... so Fate is more convoluted

    I personally would like to thank you GR, in this Quarantine I was looking for something good to watch and I thought “well...if there’s anytime to get into Fate, the time’s now.” While thinking of what to watch first, I remembered watching this video and a few other videos you made years ago saying “start with Deen.” So that’s where I started, and I regret nothing. The Deen series is honestly not that bad, it’s not great or anything but it felt like an okay beginning, then I watched Zero and loved it, then UBW and also loved it, and I just finished Apocrypha and it was good (Mordred and her master should’ve been the MCs). Overall, I’m now part of the fandom thanks to you, I took your advice and ran with it. Now I’ve got no regrets and can’t wait to see the Heaven’s Feel movies

      Tobias F I don't think that comparison works, because those films were (however erroneously) intended to be watchable chronologically. Watching them chronologically isn't some kind of alternate way to view them, it's intended, regardless of it making no sense. And also they were kind of garbage, unlike Fate/Zero, so there isn't the impetus of "well, this is the best part, so why not start there?"

    • @smsmsm9474
      @smsmsm9474 6 років тому +23

      Believe me, starting from FZ is the worst thing you can do in regard to watching fate. I myself start from FZ, was mildly interested in the fate franchise as a whole and start digging in, i.e. reading the VN. And as stated as the video, most of the story crucial revelations and plot points are casually given out to the viewer in episode 1. Yes, most of the revelations in a story that could be considered a mystery story. Not a good sign there. All the suspenses and shock factors when all those revelations are mostly lost when I read the VN, which is really a dead sentence for most mystery stories out there.
      Still, I continue on reading it, and complete it. A really good read, every revelations are executed better than FZ did (of course it did, FZ basically just lightly touch those plot points before moving on). I decided to re-watch FZ. And it really surprise me as I went through it, I noticed a lot of subtle points that I didn't see in my first time watching. The context of FSN adds up an entirely new layer of meaning to FZ, enhancing the watching experience so much it feels like I am seeing a completely different anime.
      So yes you should start with the VN, the best way to getting in the fate franchise IMO. Or at least the fate route, then proceed on watching whatever you like. Well it's fine if you choose not to, I can't really force you.

After all of that, got too impatient and decieded to read the VN for HF, Fate HA and even the recent Fate Apoc. Good franchise really

  • @GoldenPincers
    @GoldenPincers 6 років тому +45

    Finally! I'm glad someone else shares my opinions on Deen/Stay Night, a big anituber at that.
    Sure, D/SN is not perfect by any means, the ending is a mesh of the 3 routes plus original stuff, and the production values are nowhere near today's quality. BUT! Like Arkada said, D/SN is the best start, imo.
    F/Z was created AFTER F/SN with the mindset that you already know what happened in F/SN, to show the futility of the characters in a tragic way. And that's the point of F/Z.
    D/SN gives us the basics, the necessary knowledge required to advance to the rest, premise-wise, story-wise and character-wise. The 1st route in the F/SN VN is the Fate route... what D/SN adapts, and while it's not an amazing adaptation, it HAD to not be one. Having a perfect adaptation of the Fate roue wouldn't have worked. Completing the Fate route in the VN leaves much incompletion and questions, but that you can quickly see answered by playing UBW and then HF. But anime don't have that freedom. Meanwhile, watching a perfect Fate route adaptation would leave a sense of incompletion, but you wouldn't be able to check a UBW anime because, well, there wasn't any.
    So changes were necessary to give an ending that felt the most complete possible, to a story that originally isn't complete to begin with. If anything, what Deen did is very commendable. They gave an ending to something that didn't have a proper one, bc you could continue to two other stories to fill the gaps left in the 1st story.
    Deen/Stay Night has its issues, of course, but it is the best starting point for anime watchers. Playing the VN is best, but not everyone can play through 50+ hours of a VN. For anime-onlies, D/SN is the best start, imo.

    Arkada as also someone who's HEAVILY invested into the nasuverse, I have to politely disagree with you on the optimal watch order. I do agree Deen Stay/Night should be first as it's the closest thing to the Fate route. However I would put Fate/Zero AFTER Heaven's feel all on the notion that the original light novel was written with the assumption the reader has read all 3 routes.
    For me it hurts the most because Sakura's backstory was the defining moment of heartbreak for me in the series, Fate/Zero has spoiled that to the mass populous and none of them, in my opinion, will experience the same amount of sadness that was realizing the happy cheerful girl was a broken mess. How you read 2 full routes getting a sense that Sakura was pure and then getting hit with her full tragedy.
    So ya, I would recommend Deen Stay Night, ufotable UBW, ufotable Heaven's Feel, then Fate/Zero as the best way to experience fate.

    I get what you mean, but I feel like Fate/Zero works the best as both an introduction AND a stand-alone story if a newbie isn't sure how into this giant crazy franchise they actually want to go.
    I also can't think of much that's important in Fate route that doesn't get covered or done better in the other two routes and/or Zero so I'd personally only recommend D/SN to completionists or as something entertaining to have on in the background [This is all obviously a moot point to anyone who wants to read the vn first and LBR, most people aren't gonna want to do that].

      Its becasue it is a different series. Stay/Night is one Series that is based on a VN and Zero is based on a LN that came years afterwards, hell Zero has not even made an attempt as naming itself Stay/ Night/ Zero or some shit, that should be hint enough.
      Do not get me wrong i do like Zero, but its painful to see so many assume it is part of the same source matrial. If you only enjoy Zero you are a Zero Fan, Not A Fate/Stay Night one.

    Thing is, Fate/Zero spoils you less of UBW or F/sn than F/sn or UBW spoil you of Fate/Zero. If a person were to watch F/sn first, they wouldn't have the crushing suspense of not knowing who will win the Grail War, who will win the battle between Saber and Lancer, or what Kotomine Kirei will do. Having watched Fate/Zero first, Kotomine's entire character was a shock to me every time he did something, it was great, but if I were to watch F/sn first I wouldn't have the same reaction.
    Heck, Fate/Zero explains the Grail Wars better than any other Fate anime. It is also the anime that's the easiest to recommend to a person who isn't familiar with Fate. There's a difference between recommending an anime where the main plot is Shirou wanting to fuck the servant he summoned and recommending an anime where the main plot is a full blown war waged by various mage families for a pseudo-miracle making device.

      This and it sometimes is even more terrible. A great example would be the time loop arc form steins;gate, wehre for the first time we saw what could happen if you ignore your moral's in there. This, of course never made it into the anime. Its not the worst example i can think of, but it boils down to making anime "teen friendly" none the less.

    UFOtable's UBW assumes you've seen F/Z, while F/Z assumes you've seen Deen Stay Night. Deen Stay Night in turn drops a sprinkling of plot points from other routes that weren't adapted at the time, so they all spoil each other to some extent and there isn't really a 'perfect' way to watch this franchise.
    I ended up starting with F/Z simply because if there are going to be spoilers no matter what, I'd rather have a good anime spoil a mediocre one rather than the other way around.

    • @PrimexMaxusTitan

      Fate/stay night 2006 doesn't really spoil that much besides the Caster storyline in UBW. Aside from that, it only hints at a relationship between Rin and Sakura.

      i agree!! i really hate the argument dont watch fate zero first because it will spoil UBW. Just finished UBW and youre right so many details and reference from UBW to zero just skipped through with assumption that people watched zero already. Like damn kitsurugi and sakura part are so insignificant like i didnt care to know more about them based on UBW but that's fine because Ufotable assumed that people know about their story because people watch zero already. so zero-UBW combo works for me.

    To be honest thinking about the order of watching vs order of airing, I wonder how is the Heaven's Feel gonna be directed. Fate/zero is created with prior assumption that readers know about Heaven's Feel, while the anime is airing with the direction mindset of Fate/zero come 1st, Heaven's Feel latter. I am going in without the experience of VN, so I'm intrigued either way.

      They will need to change a major plot detail to make it even pg friendly. Its still based off of the VN that was stay/night so it will have to stick to that, its the third route. I dunno how you can assume zero has even anything to do with stay/ night. It has not, its not even based on the same vn. My guess is they will not take it into consideration at all, or if they do will try to use flashbacks to it, maybe? Its a damn clusterfuck.

    As someone who DID get into the franchise with Fate/Zero, back before UBW even came out, I have to say that I actually felt like the story did a GREAT job communicating how pointless and tragic everything was on its own. Not that I disagree with you entirely. It probably would've been better to start with Deen's F/SN if I had known (still having trouble finding it actually), but it's not as big a deal to start with F/Z as you make it out to be.

      Many people don't realize that without the VN, this won't be an anime. It's its origin. Y'all should be thankful that this was made into an anime, because a lot of VNs out there weren't given the privilege to do so. It's like the movies that are based on books; without LOTR, Harry Potter, or Narnia books, you wouldn't have the movie rendition of them, no matter how bad/good they are into sticking to the book plot.
      True Nasuverse fans of the genre will read and dig deep into the lore. Heck, they'll even watch Kara No Kyoukai and play Tsukihime if they really are into it. And for those who don't have the time, the VN has saves; when you play them and you're about done on a certain part, just save it, no problem, and then play it again when you're free. As for the anime, you'll need to actually have minimum of 25 minutes of free time in order to enjoy watching the entire episode. The VN, a few pages here and there, and before you know it, you already finished the route. Kinda like a book.
      If, however, you're not able to even play the VN, then search the forums, or videos of Fate, as the foundations are basically flushed out at this point. They even have an entire wiki for almost each Fateverse that you choose. Sure, some will spoil you of certain details, but it's the next best thing you got for knowledge if you want to go deep into the lore/s. I did both when I had my free time/s. 10, 15 minutes? No problem. It all comes down to how much you really want it.

    I agree that if you’re truly invested in getting into Fate, watch 2006 or read the VN. However, if you’re just kind of a casual viewer (or trying to get someone else into Fate like I do a lot), I would never recommend either. To get someone into it, the show needs to hook them in early, and neither the VN or 2006 anime can do that. If you’re already determined to get into the show, you already have that hook, but otherwise, that can best be found in Fate/Zero or UBW.

  • @The_Wise_Viper
    @The_Wise_Viper 6 років тому +32

    It seems the comments have a decent amount of diversity, but I'll still put in my two cents.
    I agree that Fate/Stay Night 2006 should be watched first (for anime-onlys) and I'm actually part of the minority that enjoyed the series enough to finish it through.
    However, I'm not to appreciative of making the act of watching Fate/Zero first a taboo, and some have already taken that to heart. Of course, I don't think it was your intention to antagonize those who started off with Fate/Zero, so I won't flame you for something you didn't do.
    I watched the Fate Series in this order:
    Fate/Zero,
    Fate/Stay Night 2006,
    Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works by ufotable,
    (this is also when I watched Kara no Kyoukai, but that's in the broader Nasuverse),
    tried Fate/kaleid,
    Fate/Grand Order,
    the new Fate/Apocrypha
    I don't think there's anything wrong with beginning with Fate/Zero first, as there's still a underlying problem with people starting with Fate/Stay Night (2006). First of all, the viewer might not even finish the adaption due to its various problems, most of which are seen right away in DEEN's botched interpretation of Shirou. We already know this. But the problem lies in that Fate/Stay Night (2006) has a different kind of audience, or rather a different audience demographic, than Fate/Zero (this is assuming we exclude people who read the visual novels as this is for anime only). Now obviously, the audiences overlap due to being the same franchise, but the sheer difference in the tone of F/SN 06 and F/Z, F/SN UBW, and F/SN HF means that people who would actually appreciate the rest of the series won't even give them the light of day if they don't power through F/SN 06. And the people who do enjoy and finish it are met with Fate's typical long expositions, which they might actually get bored of. This separation in tone is unfortunate as DEEN seemed to want to take the material seriously as shown from using the remix of This Illusion, disillusion, as it's opening, but still fell into multiple cliche pitfalls.
    Fate/Zero may hold spoilers (and while I am not one who cares about spoilers, that's a topic for another day), but those are really only glimpses into the various routes, and do not contain enjoyment breaking spoilers, unless finding out Sakura is "bad" without any context is truly intolerable for Heaven's Feel. If anything, it encourages viewers of Fate/Zero to anticipate the upcoming Heaven's Feel Movies.
    Fate/Zero also meant for a mature audience, and takes them seriously, and presents a multitude of fascinating clashing ideals while Fate/Stay Night 2006 is rather generic in its appeal towards a teenage audience.
    My point is that people will want to see something in the series that fits to them, and if they choose Fate/Zero to start from because they like the tone, a certain character, or just how dang beautiful it is, they totally can do that, especially if they would not feel encouragement from Fate/Stay Night 2006.

      Also, if you watch FZ first, and then read VN, and Then rewatch FZ as completely new experience, doesn't that just add to your fun with FATE? That mean you get extra Anime out of it.
      If you have VN, would you ever suggest anyone to watch DEEN adaptation instead?

    TL;DW - Fate/Stay Night (2006) > Fate/Zero > Unlimited Blade Works > Heavens Feel
    Other adaptations such as Grand Order or Apocrypha can be watched at any time after Fate/Stay Night (2006), because they take place in entirely different timelines.

      Eh if we go the real logical way. It should be Fate Stay night 2006>UBW>Heaven's Feel> Fate Zero
      This is to fully grasp and understand the characters of Fate Zero. Yeah I know HF is only to be a movie split into three and is going to take awhile.
      I think ufotable kind screw up by releasing Fate Zero way to early. They should have gone the way the Fate stay night universe went on release. Fate>UBW>HF>Fate Zero. Since Zero spoils to no end all the 3 routes pretty early on.

      My opinion of what order to watch the shows will probably change over time, as more of the fate franchise is adapted. Working with what we have right now, I think F/SN > F/Z > UBW > HF is the optimal watch order. That is assuming you don't read the visual novel, which I have heard good things about but did not read it for myself yet. So I don't know to what extent F/SN 2006 spoils HF, but I guess I will find out soon enough.

      Grand Order isn't an anime, it's a convoluted gacha game that assumes you have encyclopedic knowledge of everything Type-Moon. Apocrypha on the other hand is completely standalone as long as you understand the basic stuff from FSN

      I would even say do not watch the heaven's feel anime, if you are done with the VN, cause you will understand how many things they would need to change to make it teen friendly. Honestly i do not even want to imagine the job of the writers on that, they are basically in a no win position. If they stick to the third route it will cause outrage, if not it will lessen character development. Holy fuck.

    I did watch the Fate-francise exactly in the order that you mentioned.
    I didn't really liked dean/stay night when i started with it, but i still think you are absolutly correct, because with zero, ubw and so on i became i huge fate fan that now has watched everything in the francise until now, even prisma illya and fate/extra

    But watching Zero before Heaven's Feel it spoils almost all the twists it has.
    Also, how do you feel about Fate's Sir Tristan?

      Of course it fucking will Zero is based on a LN that came out years after the Stay/Night VN did. Everything that is not Fate, UBW, or heaven's feel will defeat the intention the writers of the series had. Zero should be seen as a competently separate thing, if you only watch the anime, or watched after you have played the VN.

    I started with Fate/Zero, because at first I didn't like Deen/Stay Night, but after finishing Zero I gave it another shot, and I'm perfectly fine, my experience wasn't ruined.

    I will have to totally agree with you on this one.
    I was introduced to the Nasuverse via Deen/Stay Night and since then I am loving it.
    Also, I believe that the Fate franchise can be a little bit difficult for newcomers to follow, but if you explain them properly that some of the routes are "what if" scenarios while some other recent adaptations(a.k.a. Fate/Apocrypha) are alternate timelines that deviate a lot from Fate/Zero.
    A good example for this would be Marvel comic multiverse a couple of years ago.
    Earth 616 is the main universe that is equivalent to Fate/Zero and it's 3 possible chronological routes Stay Night, Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel.
    Ultimate universe(don't remeber from the top of my head the number of it) is equivalent to Fate/Apocrypha, where there is the Holy Grail War but the participants(be it either the Masters or the Servants) and even the location(s) are different.

    Awesome! I watched Deen/Stay first (followed by FZ & UBW) and it was ideal. One has to be pretty committed to track down the VN in English. Props to anyone who manages to play all of it first, prior to seeing any anime version.
