For the animation complaint, I can provide an answer. Overlord came out in the summer of 2015. You know what else was airing at that time? The second half of Ore Monogatari, another Madhouse anime. Madhouse was also preparing for One Punch Man, which aired the following season. And earlier that year, winter 2015, Death Parade aired. 2015 Was Madhouse's busiest year.

vol 13 isn't out, so we have no details on his supposed "death" yet. My money is on Lupusregina just trolling Enri.
Indeed, Lupu is just trolling.. She's way too happy when she said it. Maru already said something about if Ainz actually died, or disappeared, the NPCs of Nazarick would rampage throughout the NW.
Ainz Ooal Gown knew defeat. He never won against TouchMe but the NPCs never thought that way.
I think the irony between the mc's good past and the role he tries to act out is what makes this series. It feels as if a developer has put himself in the shoes of a character to test the bugs and ins-outs of his game.

Sheary saying it was inspired by D&D would be more accurate. As there isn't that much similarity between D&D and the mechanics in the anime. But the influence does show a lot.
The thing I love about this is it's basically "How a villain would actually function" if they were played by an actual person rather then as a character who exists purely as the end goal of a story. It drew me in and the warped way the monster peeps vie humans keeps me hooked and begging for more.
The idea that ainz is in a mmo is a wide misconception. Overlord is less like SAO and .hack and more like no game no life.
Yes, he's NOT inside the game, he says that repeatedly. He and the NPCs have been transported to another world where they are all REAL.
trackts he knows by day one. In the third episode we see him learn that this new world has its own currency and geography. They also have three major powers and small factions spread theoughout. The first thing ainz does is get intel on this new world and tries to build a reputation using multiple different aliases.
almost every isekai is set in a mmo-like world, where you have levels, magic, swords, monsters, guilds, quests and shit. that's why people say MMO, cause Isekai is a very specific Japanese word, while MMO is a very popular and common word.
when people say mmo about isekai anime/LN/manga, they don't mean that it is a GAME, they mean that they have levels and shit.
Minh Dinh the world in overlord doesn't have levels though. Sure Momonga remembers the levels of all the npcs and such, and their strength does match what their levels used to be. But levels don't actually exist anymore. Same goes for things like health bars or menus. (Though they do use a menu in one occasion to check on Shalltear's status which was a screw up on the author's part in my opinion. )
numerically levels don't exist but ainz and company still have a way to gauge strength. this also relates to the magic system (that was originally from YGGDRASIL) that guage themselves in tiers higher the tier the more intense the magic for example a tier four spell (magic that would be advance for normal humans but something a potent magician can perform) can let you control a cloud but a tier six spell (magic almost impossible for humans to perform) can let you control all facets of the weather.
also the menu you mentioned can be interpreted as a form of observation magic meant to gauge the conditions of the guardians or a function of the base itself.
From the intro of this video alone, I'm now going to check it out. I've been reluctant to start it, but after hearing a lot of good about it, I'll have to check it out.
Edit: The real question I still have going into the series: How is the Dub? I know sub is generally the best choice, but I always like to keep an open mind when it comes to dubs, as they've been getting better and better overall.
The Dub is good, and season 2 just started and the dub of Episode one is out for season 2.

renegade xtl they did if for a good reason. overlord plots get very interesting and complicated later on. Yes Ainz is over power, but trust me they did it in a very good way
the overpower of mc is comedy gold.
The animation is not that good "for you" because madhouse didn't expect Overlord to be that popular it is originally intended to be 'go buy the light novels' kind of anime but then it hit japan like a storm so they did a second season 'episode 4 by the time of this review' and it's animation was great.
I don't think popularity is the reason. They had a few popular shows already, and if I remember right One-Punch Man was an even greater hit, but they gave the 2nd season of OPM to someone else. I think they just really love this franchise.
Nayrael its kinda have a impact on the budget and the overall plan,you can clearly see the budget cut in the ending episode, and its largely because OPM manga have a great art work so they have to step its in OPM and jump down on overlord
one thing i've heard that speaks for overlord was that it's dvd and blue-ray sales were really good, and profit speaks higher then popularity.
Being made to sell the LN excuse doesn't work with Madhouse because 1 season runs to boost sales of a LN is most of what they do and they do it with extremely high quality.
The reason it isn't up to their usual standard is that that was a very busy year for them and their team was stretched a little to thin. This was done by the worst animators on staff. That said the animation is still great and several studios would kill to get the worst animators Madhouse has.
MAruyama himself had tweeted that a season 2 would of not have been possible without fan support hence it was made in the first place. it was as others have mentioned just a go buy the ln for the rest of the story show and it aired around the time that both one punch man was ready to air and My love story in co-production hence the animation being a bit sub-par but the reception for it was beyond what they imagined it increased the ln sales from 600k copies to 1.5 million in just 2 months and became the best ln seller(series overall) of 2015 and 2016 respectively. the blu ray was also a huge seller at an avg 11k not even one punch man came that level at just 8k avg.
READ THE LIGHT NOVEL. The "main appeal" of Overlord is the characters and world building. Each person has their own personality and storyline that is both affected by Ainz and is content to grow without him.
Note: This does not mean the Web Novel. That version of the story is more of a prototype, and things go differently in the two stories. The Light Novel is also going much further storywise. The Manga is also limited compared to the Light Novel, though it does have it's charm thanks to the art style.

True the misconception is that the story is about Ainz it's actually about the world and the characters in it, many of the light novels aren't even from his perspective most of the time or barely at all
"Each person has their own personality" You mean how every single one of his subordinates' only emotion is "All hail Ainz"

Actually the strength of the overlord is that Ains is actually supporting character allowing the other characters tell their story. It's about his growing power and influence gives the world ever changing setting, but interesting stories are actually about the side characters who have to try to survive and make best while living in this world so fast changing by Ains.
How Ironic, I just watched EP 1 of this on our Podcast. Just from that alone, I'm inclined to agree with your opinion. I like that it explains why Momonga is OP, since he had grinded to Max LV by the end of the original game, and his guild had spent forever crafting the weapon he uses. He's not OP just because he's played slightly longer than most other players (Like some OTHER Isekai i could name) and given the way the story works out, it makes his Over-powerdness much more acceptable.
I'm gonna be watching more of this, cause I think it is indeed O-Ki!
The novels even explicitly state that he's far from a top-tier PvP player in the game. In fact they even clarify that he's more of a mid-tier build, cause he built the character for roleplay, but that he's high-ish tier because he's so good at making counter-strategies for each opponent before the fight begins.
@@OpXarxa They were a specifically PVP-focused guild, too, so his PVP ability doesn't come out of nowhere. Hell, in Season 1, when they're searching for Npheria in the graveyard, he gives an impromptu lecture on information gathering for a PVP fight to Nabe. You can even go earlier with the foreshadowing of PVP skill by looking at his fight with the sunlight scripture, when a passive item/skill/ability he has shatters a scrying spell.
Now all that's left is to bear with the lizardmen arc until the second season really starts. The appeal of the show changes after the Disturbance in the Royal Capital arc, since it stops being a power fantasy and starts being more of a political world conquest, with the occasional demonstration of force.
Also the Character development of his "Minions" really starts of there. First with Cocytus, later on with Sebastian and the rest will probably follow soon.
But I don't know how much the second season will cover.
It should finish at Momon deafeating Jaldabaoth. I mean, its in the OP. Then again, the Lizarmen arc was in the season 1 OP...

Paper Cat in the manga and LN yes, since you could just read fast to get through all the exposition dump and other lizard shenanigans. In the anime, episode 2 was painful to watch. Two lizards sitting in front of each other talking for the biggest part of the episode was boring to the point I found it unbearable to sit through it and started skipping through. I get that the point of the arc was for cocytus to grow as a character and to prove nazarick's capacity to conquer and rule, but I don't need a degree in lizardmen history for that.
Pajarraco I think it doesn’t make much difference if you gonna skip it. the good thing for anime is that you don’t spend a lot time in single ep. you can skip some bit and go to ep 3. Which is much better. Isn’t it same for both LN and anime? I don’t see much difference

Overlord really deserves the hype it is getting. I honestly don't find this appealing at first (actually i forced myself not to like it before, disregarding those constant facts of my friends').
for those who judged this anime too early, trust me, sit and get comfortable. you'll like it eventually.

I had like, a totally opposite experience. I went into it thinking I would like it because people compared it to Log Horizon and it just got worse and worse for me as it went along. The main character is a thoroughly unlikable and inconsistent edgelord Deus Ex Machina.

except that things aren't fully game-like in the New World. Life bars no longer exist, but life force does exist. Here's an example. If you head is cut off in the New World, even if you would still have life-force left(in terms of how much damage the sword would have dealt if it was a game), then you die instantly anyway. The only beings in the New World who can go around that are heteromorphic beings and beings with regenerative abilities(and some with bodies that are much more resilient and resistant).
Overlord world is a world corrupted by MMO game mechanic which was a normal fantansy world before the first people transfered
Siegberg91 The MMO that Momonga came from is a normal MMO. The world he is now in is a different dimension that has fantasy propertiea that are common in our own "real" world.
But saying that "fantasy" world is less real than our own "real" world is utterly brainless.
It's the same if some one from a different dimension coming to our own modern Earth and saying it's a made up because it's very similar to a novel that they read in their world...
Two "fantasy" worlds aren't the same or even similar just because your own world lacks anything magical from those two other worlds.
Even if it isn't an MMO, it is close enough. It runs on RPG mechanics to the point that Ainz can "feel" his HP and MP levels, and even natives to this world are using spells and skills that existed in Yggdrasil.
Except the new world IS a better world. His old world, the 22nd century is a distopia(with ruined planet earth, corperations as the main rulers and so on) I wouldn't want to get back to, that's the reason why DMMORPGs in that world were so popular because having no nature, violent crime and mass surveillance makes you want that escapist fantasy of a fantasy world.
BTW new world=/=the game. He runs by game rules kind of but kind of not but the new world isn't the online game he used to play.
I especially love how he's seen by other characters in later arcs like the lizardmen arc in season 2. Things like this become a a mainstay in the series. He himself doesn't know his true extend of power in this world which is why he became so careful to lure out any opposition in season one. Seeing him from a different point of view just shows how OP he really is.
I watched it when it aired and went to the LN, a really really good read if you're into deep characters. I'm slowly getting all the books and they're really really beautiful with colored art and non-paperback is always a big plus.
Papa Bones Thats what I really like about this isekai series to others. The protagonist actually has a reason to want to stay in a fantasy world (ruin earth, used like a slave, terrible living conditions, all family dead) vs other protagonist reasons (boring life, no enough games, average nerd, not popular)
The OverLord Light Novels are great! Love the world building and getting to see other characters impression about Ainz from this world.
I just finished Overlord and that shit was fire definitely a masterpiece in my opinion

To this day, Overlord is the only anime I have actively spent real money on. I've bought the blu-rays, 5 of the light novels, and all of the mangas. Even though it seems kind of redundant, I simply can't get enough of it.
The anime version of overlord has flaws, but the LN is gold. And still the anime is great.

I actually was looking for this the other day, but was bummed not to find it. So glad your reviewing it!
overlord is the only isekai power fantasy animie that logically and convincingly solves many of the problems:
- why doesnt he just steamroll all the countries. cause his character isnt built for pvp, he doesnt want to get nazarick destroyed and he doesnt know if other players are out there. shelltear was brainwashed after all. so he needs to have good reasons to invade countries.
- why doesnt he just make himself a harem. many of his female underlings desire him, so why not? to be blunt, he doesnt even have the equipment anymore, so how would he even use a harem? also, the npcs are like the children of his friends so he got reservations, not the mention the guilt he feels for messing with albedos settings.
he also isnt an inept protagonist that stumbles over his own feet, trying to be jesus kun doing "good stuff" that eventually harms him and others he cares about, forgiving every foe trying to befriend them etc etc. he is realistic. everybody prioritizes stuff.
I've been avoiding this series and rolling my eyes at it... after the first minute or so I've decided I think I'll check it out, actually, change that think to WILL!

My roommate has been watching it and it looked so tropey I really didn't want to watch it. After this review, I'll throw it on the end of my long list and eventually get to it, so I guess I'll find out for myself sometime.
Read the light novel. The anime does not do it justice at all. The world building is amazing. It doesn't just follow the main character, it actually makes you empathize with people who are usually just put in to show how badass the MC is in these types of stories. It shows you the actual effects the MC choices has on everyone, and I mean almost everyone.
It also beautifully shows the complete loss of humanity the MC develops because he isn't human anymore.
There is one part of the light novel when you read it, you feel the absolute terror Ainz "allies" after they see what monstrous acts he can do to a whole army without trying, after a whole army is massacred in less than 5 minutes, in one the most violent methods I have read in years.
Then you get Ainz perspective of sheer curiosity and delight because he did not expect it to go so well even though there are thousands of corpses laying at his feet.
@@Johncornwell103 I've read and reread that part sooo many times in anticipation for the anime version, to see the nightmare on the visual spectrum! Unfortunately, S3 was a good handful of episodes too short (to speak nothing of its abysmal budget) and the quality of S3 unfortunately falls short

Its a shame that you didnt mention Pandoras Actor and his Voice Actor in the japanese Dub. The Actor was a really welcome suprise to me and i am kinda dissapointed that you didnt give your opinion on that. Great vid tho!

kionashi He already reviewed Bebop and Evangelion. "Classic" isn't a good reason; presumably he is just busy with other things. I know a few years ago his reason for not having reviewed it yet was because the second half of the dub hadn't been released yet, but I do not know the current status of the dub OR if that reasoning still stands amidst his newer reviews of shows not yet released in NA.
He talks about it in one of his 20 to watch lists, I forget which one.

Finally overlord get the recognition from more great anime reviewer, and for you to notice the only flaw to be the animation and giving a buy suggestion is wonderful.
One of my favorite anime series glad to see you got around to watching it I highly enjoyed the first season and so far loving the second one and I also got the light novels after watching the first season that is a very rare thing for me but who can deny Ainz Ooal Gown hell Ainz even made Madhouse come back for season 2 which is I suppose is fitting for as Ainz himself said, "Ainz Ooal Gown does not know defeat."

Unless Demiurge has some type of special spell *cough* _rod of the incubus_ *cough* I don't think Ainz having a harem would accomplish much since he lacks the hardware to make it worthwhile. I like how Ainz phrased it in his own words:

Ainz actually has the ability to transform himself into a human or something else i think, but that comes with a costs he is not willing to take. And i guess it makes sense since he has no dick and has limited sentimental capacity therefore he can avoid thinking with his head down there.

Thanks so much for making this, when I saw the second season of overlord was coming this season I was thinking about maybe start watching the series since I never watched the first season. But you've made up my mind, I'm going to check it out soon. Also, I think it's fun that shows can do what seems like such a simple twist as fx switching the roles from hero to villain and thus make it somewhat "original".

The reason that I'm excited for season 2 and why I like Overlord so much is that, while reading the Light Novels, I realized that for a large portion of the story, there is a bigger focus on side characters and their journeys. Their journeys do frequently link back to Momonga/Ainz, but the show isn't always focused on him obliterating every opponent he comes across
Um, no, he doesn't want to start a harem since he cares deeply for them, these are the thing his friends made, that he doesn't think he really has the right to defile, he only changed Albedo since the Game was going offline and her creator wasn't there, he had no idea this shit would happen.
My biggest hang-up about him. I wanted to ship him and Albedo so bad...oh well, guess I'll just have to add her to my list of waifus.

He’s also genuinely creeped out by Shalltears affections once he realizes it’s because skeletons just really turn her on
He has stated that it wasn't so much that he wasn't open to a romantic relationship with her so much that it was that he was unsure of their place in this new world and didn't want to take any risky actions just yet until he developed a decent enough understanding of what lengths he can and cannot go to.

You seem to be playing that show's plot as thought Ainz is an actual evil overlord, as opposed to the _Monty Python's The Life Of Brian_ -tier lovable doofus he is in the actual story. That seems to be a different direction than the one most abridged series' go to.
Karilynne Davies You’re portrayal of Albedo was hilarious.
One thing I love about the anime is, that Ainz, even with all his power, doesn't act impulsively and is more a schemer, which is befitting that of his character. In one of the episodes, where Shalltear gets mind-controlled, after Ainz revives her, he immediately becomes VERY cautious, he even puts on World-class items on each of his guardians. Anz is constantly keeping himself in the more low-key base, as he wants to sure that there's nothing that can threaten Nazarick. The anime has more comdey and fan service, but in the LN it's honestly really good.
I really liked the Sauron reference u made. Good review as always. Overlord is a good anime for sure.
About time this got a review. Can we just get Oregairu Season 2 review? It way better than the first season.

They just announced in the last few days that Volume 11 will finally be coming out in Japan. It seems things are possibly going back to normal now. The anime covered through Volume 9 or 10 and the English release is either caught up or about to catch up with Volume 10. The series was planned to end at 14 or 15 volumes before the hiatus happened (legal troubles on the author's end) and the original web novel has slowly been updated during the hiatus and I read that it's at the beginning of Volume 14.

The first season had its length, but in the second season it got really interesting... tho if you prefer fisticuff fights instead of politics and intrigue, better keep the brick on the floor.

I just love how the LN introduces nice characters with very touching backstories only to be slaughtered the nastiest way possible later on. LOL
are you talking about the workers? if so most of them dont actually get slaughtered as in "they die" they meet a fate worse than death
I think you missed a point when you talked about the lack of explanation of the world they are living in. The fact is the entire base/lair ended the game shutdown hidden in a swamp, but when it started up again it was in an open field, which is why they had to bury the walls to hide it. In Momonga's exposition moments, he constantly refers to the world of Yggdrasil he used to know in past tense while exploring the new world he actually knows very little about and tosses high level magic potions with careless ease. The new world uses the framework of the old game, but we are, in fact, learning about the new game world along with him.
This leads me to my personal theory: The moment the game was shut down, everything in the old game world was mapped and sold to another game company who pieced the old game into the improved new game to save on production costs. This includes the brains of the player(s) still logged in at the moment of shut down. That means an indefinite amount of time could have transpired in that one second between shut-down and start-up and that Momonga might not even really be there in the game, only a map of his brain. Otherwise, Momonaga would have a time limit as his body slowly wasted away in his apartment SAO style. Remember how the new game system has a fail-safe to keep his emotions in check? Could they do that to any player to log in or is that reserved only for the game NPC's more advance AI? Having had his brain mapped, this map has been copied into the game and he is now an NPC and he doesn't even realize it yet. What if, later in the series, he meets his real life player, who woke up normally after the old game shutdown, as a new character? That is one of the reasons I'm continuing to watch and see if my theory will pan out.
I suggest the light novel, there's a fantastic community over at Reddit and if you ask around you can get a free Pdf of the books. There's 12 volumes worth of awesome downright amazing world building. Though just so you know, you're awfully close, just not quite.

I read the light novel in a desperate attempt to stay invested in the story and I have to say it's one of my favorite light novels to read. Volume 7 might be my personal favorite, I was slowly reading through volume 4 for the better half of a year last year but it picked up quickly in volume 5 and I marathoned and caught up in a single month because it just kept getting better and better. Volume 4 starts off pretty slow even for me, but the second half of it is what got me invested into it. The message in season 2 about the fans keeping the anime going made me tear up a bit because it feels like the only series I bought all the stuff for and actually got my wish for another season for.
I watched S1 near the beginning of 2016. When I finished the show initially, and saw it was Madhouse who made it, I was completely disappointed because of the record of no continuation seasons. Now with the second season airing, and being so far so good, I couldn't be happier.

I blame how the show cannot possibly cover everything in the LN, but you are grossly mistaken about the season climax. He was actually profoundly outclassed, despite the broken mechanic put on display, as his foe is essentially a perfect hard counter to his own capabilities. His master plan makes perfect sense when you understand the mechanics behind it and the source material they draw inspiration from. You missed that he still would have lost despite his plan, and his opponent using idiot-tier tactics, were it not for the interference of a third party.
One of the things that makes this IP interesting is that the dramatic focus of the narrative lies not with the powers brought to bear so much as the perspective play between the world and the dungeon denizens, the lost-in-translation co-dependent dynamic he has with his now-sentient NPCs, and eventually the political intrigue that is to come.

Ains will never get a Challenge, the highest enemy in terms of level is most likely the platinum dragon lord at about lvl 85 which is already considered almighty. and Ains and most of his guardians are lvl 100... gg Gargantua would just stomp on the PDL without much of an effort
Not necessarily. Dragons can use wild magic. Which is the original magic of their world, before the Yggdrasill magic was introduced. So would Ainz lose? Probably not. But it wouldn't be a stomp.
Doesn't Ainz have an instant kill AOE attack. And more than half the world items. The only way it won't be a curb-stomp is if Ainz chooses to play around which he usually doesn't considering how much he plans ahead.

Mr O He does have that skill yes as for the World Class Items he holds a good amount of them yes though no where near half as his guild holds 9 of them I think out of the 200 WCI in the game. Also for fighting capability as we know so fare the only over all threats are WCI themselves, the Platnium Dragon Lord and DDDL who as it stands now
SPOLIER can match pretty all the guardians in a 1v1 fight the only exception being shalltear. On a side note DDDL has also killed a player before and taken his/her WCI.
I like these animes but you're crazy if you think that means I want to live in these worlds. A better world for me at the bare minimum has to be at a technological level that includes indoor plumbing and does not involve constant danger to villagers, even if I, myself am not in danger.
Most Likely Dead The overlord world is worse than other isekai fantasy worlds in other animes. Like believe it or not, but humanity is literally the minority and at threat of extinction of other demihuman races who views humanity as only meals, the troll kingdom sees human babies as a delicacy.

Overlord is on a whole another level then any other anime, in both light novel and anime. However for the sake of finishing this comment 2 hours sooner I will focus on just the anime.
Animation: The amount of details integrated in this animation is just amazing. They are overloading every single character with as much detail as they can as to reflect how they were described in the light novel (badass lv 100s). Animators usualy hate this and settle for simple attires for their charcters so they have less to draw, but in this anime we see consistent level of detail. And not just that, details go even deeper into the lore aspect. Now if I asked you the difference between an angel and archangel you probably wouldnt know, however in the anime we can clearly see that animators did know when they were designing the characters, I just cant beleive somebody looked at such minute details such as how many pairs of wings or what kind of attire and look each type of angel/archangel has. And not only that but we see many of these small details such as omages to mythologies (greek, nordic) and games such as DnD, WoW. I am honestly little book of references but this was hardcore even for me to see even after rewatching 3 times.
Now:
CGI, now let me tell you something- I hate CGI, however in this anime it was done masterfully, it didnt make me cringe and it got through a whole new element to the anime. This just proves that high quality CGI can be on par with modern quality anime. However it is quite rare so i dont know if they would retain that level of cgi details in the future.
Plot: A breath of fresh air, and the best thing is it actualy uses its clishes to its advantages. It allows for deep characters insights and development. Plot is deep, twisted, funny, erotic, a lot of everything I would say, though I prefer when its fighting. Oh and fights in this anime are on a whole another level then any other anime, and they just get better and better(in light novel at least).
Music is probably its thinest part but I think Clattonia is still one of better anime openings and the sound is quite nice even in the anime.
If you like Overlord I definately recomend also buying light novels.

Overlord is my favorite anime right now. I discovered it only a month before the new season started, so good timing overall.
I couldn't find myself liking season one at all to be honest. I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way, but I just felt nothing for anyone in this show. Every action sequence was tensionless because he's so overpowered. And once the second and third villains came up (not naming cuz spoilers if that matters) I had no inclination Momonga was challenged at all because of his first enemy. Once you defeat the special forces of a country, what else can there be to scare you? So the action has no tension. Maybe the characters were fun? Not really. Just like GR says, they're just very troupey. Even Albedo, who I thought was going to have some kind of emotional breakdown into insanity because of her feelings towards Momonga (her behavior sometimes hints at it, plus the ED gave me that idea). Nothing happened there, either. And even when the final villain is someone Momonga knows, we maybe spent two or three scenes with this person, so the fifteen minute long responsibility and care fest at the end didn't feel earned in the least. I have many more problems with it (like is horrid pacing and random desire to hold out on filling the audience in on things) but that's if anyone feels the same.
If you are still at all interested in the story, I would recommend the Light Novels. A lot of your problems are covered by the books. (Very minor spoilers) In the books, they focus more on several facts. One, the NPCs are often more powerful than he is (his character is built around role playing, rather than practical effects), and they suddenly are sentient. Sure, they like him now, but if he shows himself as incompetent, will they attack him? Second, he does not know about this world. It is implied that he is not the first player to be arrive, and those previous players died, and left artifacts behind (including potentially World Level items). Third, he is in the weakest country in the region. Of course they do not have much to threaten him. But that also implies that there are others. And this country regularly fights a war with a much more powerful country. The most common battlefield for that war, are the plains that Ainz's fortress now lies in.
The biggest differences between the anime, and the books are, the anime cuts out most of the scenes with characters other than Ainz. The anime downplays how much of a villain Ainz is. And finally, the third act of the anime is basically the third book in the series, and it is heavily edited. We spend basically half of that book on Shalltear, and most of the other half is Ainz preparing for the fight, and debating with himself. The fight itself is rather brief.
It is up to you. Personally, I just finished the 6th book, and I cannot wait for the 7th. Ainz is still OP, but he is now starting to try and take over the world, and there is a lot of intrigue around him. If it helps, as the books go on, they focus more on the people Ainz is planning to conquer, and that really helps to flesh out the world.

Vincent M also about the whole no tension and conflict, well in the light novels it quickly became more focus on world building and the character developments of the npcs and the local new worlders, as they struggle to improve or challenge ainz (the new worlders) and the main conflict for the protagonist is entirely internal, his thoughts. He is constantly struggling to mantain as the powerful leader the npcs potray him as and push himself to be better so to fulfill the role of overlord. In fact ainz only has barely above grade schooler education, apparently his earth is essentially a distopia that is control by corporations that limit human rights and ability so ainz is severely limited in mind capability and so pushes to improve.

To anyone interested in Overlord I would highly reccomend the novels, they are probably one of the best ones around, although very minimalist with details, which can get tiresome at times, but it leads to an amazing world and character building that is incredible, it actually baffles that although its a world based on an MMO its incredibly rational and well thought out how it portrays the behaviour of beings that live in such a word, and Ainz inner monologue makes him an even greater protagonist.
I just hope they keep going. At the rate they are going there is enough material for 2 more seasons after season 2.

As much as I love the Overlord series, I really do even checked out some of the upcoming arcs in the source material, I am kinda tired of how over-powered Ainz and his guild is. Because I haven't seen them get into a situation that has any real stakes. Even S1's final battle didn't feel like real stakes considering the arsenal he has at his disposal. Even the politics stuff that comes later doesn't feel like there's any stakes considering Ainz is like a God and if all else fails, he can just kill everyone. And that goes for everyone one of his floor guardians.
that's probably why the focus has been off Ainz recently. It's trying to get you to care about the other people in the world, and what exactly Ainz will decide to do with them.

SOME BODY, you need to check out some less mainstream anime genres. Dragon Ball, Naruto and One Piece are all Shounen Anime (aimed primarily at a young male audience, typically characterized by action-filled plots).

I think it's not so much Ainz is trying to stay in character so much as he's acting cautiously because he's aware that there HAS to be someone in the world much more powerful than him--someone or something yanked him from the real world and trapped him there in the first place, after all. It seems to me that everything he's doing is ultimately creating one strategem or another to prepare for what he sees as an ultimate confrontation with that force.

Good Use of Makai Kingdom Clip, Also Did you ever do a review of the Disgaea Anime Series, my thoughts on it, alright but clearly could have been better. Still some of the jokes hit home and it does feel like a Disgaea anime.
I'm glad you liked Season 1 of Overlord. As a light novel reader, when I heard this was getting an anime, I was worried it was going to be ruined. I was pleasantly surprised of what they kept in overall. As soon as this anime was available on Blu-Ray (and I got my paycheck) I purchased it and still have no regrets.
the entire problem with the show is that it is sold as "the villain" but truly he is the "hero" in every action he makes. which is just annoying and boring when promised a villain.
S2 animation quality goes WAY down, feels like they are not even trying, just milking at this point
S2 animation is better in terms of art quality but it lost out in terms of its fluidity of the combat scenes (so far)
and Ainz is hardly the "hero" character you think he is
to describe him in one word would be "self-centered"
S1 had him do more "heroic" things because Ainz needed to create that image of Momon being a "hero"
however if you noticed, he still acts "un-hero" like when he exorts Lizzie Bareare into saving her grandson or when he has the adventurer team accompanying him killed because they had the nerve to tag along when Ainz went to go locate Shalltear
nearly every action Ainz takes is calculated on what benefit he gains or will gain from it
S2 has Ainz be more of a background whose indirect actions in the first season start to converge with the main storyline
and this allows the Nazarick cast, who are set on these plotlines, have more spotlight
Erebus2075 ainz is more like a selfish character who only values nazarick above all else. Even in the first few episodes he considered to leave the villagerd to die as he did not feel a thing for them. In the light novels he became even more distant from human emotion and even considers children expendable if their lives help or bring value to nazarick. So basically, if someones death (whether child, sick, elderly, or handicap) helps or benefits nazarick they are acceptable, or if the action benifits nazarick (genocide, massacre, torture, stage wars that result in mass desths) benifits nazarick, it is acceptable. But he isnt cruel or psychopath, he is merely cold and just do it for nazarick.

I disliked Overlord due to some harsh problems.
1.) Bullshit magic systems. It wasn't explained well and by the time they introduced Tier 1-8, God Tier, Super tier and P2W items ... I lost track of it.
2.) Longrunning Shonen-type battles in a 13 episode series. It overall crippled the flow harshly, especially that fight at the graveyard.
3.) And the character development was lacking harshly. Momonga was developed well, but every other character almost wasn't at all. The obvious victims were his minions in Nazarick.
4.) For a large part, it was 'Boasting to newbies: The Animation'...
It was great Popcorn-entertainment, but nothing else for me.
Maybe it's also my distain for people who brag about their OP shit and mounts in MMOs in front of newbies.

I've seen bits of this show on youtube, usually cuts of comedy bits without reference enough to get the joke; Arkada made me want to watch it. I just finished watching Recovery of an MMO Junkie, it was very enjoyable.
Overlord is fun show and the big fight is most likely going to be a mental battle to save one life to many. I'm reading the manga and I like where it's going.
