    If you finished watching the video, you might have noticed a particular something missing from the new revamped final verdict section. From this point on, my reviews will not contain numerical scores. It is from my experience that having those scores leads to one of two things: first, a greater importance placed on said scores over anything else that I might have actually said over the course of the video, and second, an unfair comparison between shows based purely on the numbers assigned to them. If you really want numerical scores, I'm quite sure that there are a slew of anime watchers on websites such as MAL, Hummingbird and AniList that can oblige you with some.

    in my personal opinion Iskandar (or Alexander The Great) was the best developed character, and i loved his philosophy and personality HO GOD

    • @hennyzhi2261
      @hennyzhi2261 9 років тому +43

      The Banquet of Kings episode is my favorite, and it has little to no action but some of the best character dialogue in the show - especially Iskanders speech to Saber. Iskander to me had the most reasonable ideals.

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +1

      Henny Zhi You must be joking. You DO know that Iskandar was basically Greek Hitler, right? And that he was responsible for thousands of deaths and he tortured his own family members to death , right? To the point that at the end of his life, his own closest friends poisoned him. How is that reasonable?

    • @hennyzhi2261
      @hennyzhi2261 9 років тому +19

      Harry Dresden The torturing of his own family I've never heard of - so you may have a point there. But I wouldn't go so far with the Hitler comparison. I only said he had the MOST reasonable ideals. Saber had a martyr complex, which is outright invalid. Kiritsugu was trying to justify his actions by being logical which has it's limits. Caster and his master gradually believed in a god that loves pain and suffering... etc.

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +4

      Henny Zhi
      Saber's ideals were correct ones. The way she approached them in her life was wrong. The whole scene was pretty much three tyrants (darwinistic tyrant, selfish tyrant and noble tyrant)

    • @hennyzhi2261
      @hennyzhi2261 9 років тому +23

      Harry Dresden They all were tyrants, but I guess this is just where our philosophies don't meet. I really don't see a selfless act in the world. They're are charitable ones, but no selfless ones. Everything a person does reflects off of them, and that's why Iskander was loved by many people. To say that you have to shoulder everyone, destroy the self, and save the day alone is not realistic. Saber didn't know how the rest of the knights felt which led to Lancelot betraying her trust in him. The King is never alone because his will is the people who support him - Iskanders ideal.

    Fate/Zero is my favorite anime. It was my intro to the Fate series and so I didn't have any problem with the ending being predictable. In fact I was blown away by it and I had no idea that this was a series of shows. As for the music. Shut it dude, this soundtrack was freakin awesome.

    Lancer's death was done brilliantly... Still feel bad for Kariya, the only master with a selfless goal, and a tragic end... Kiritsugu the coolest guy... And Archer the OP asshole yet most badass of them all... Love this series

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +4

      eldiego68 Selfless? Kariya wanted to use a little girl as an excuse to kill the man he hates so he can steal that man's wife(who never saw him as anything more than a friend) How the hell is that selfless?

    • @ARandomGuy24
      @ARandomGuy24 9 років тому +29

      I believe Kariya 's goal started out selfless before his worm molestation "training". I think at the start he just went through all that to free Sakura.
      But to get through that hell he used what he wanted as focal point. He focused on it to an obsessive degree and what he wanted wasn't just to free Sakura but to have them all Aoi, Rin & Sakura as a family. And to kill the guy who took his dream away from him.

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +6

      ARandomGuy
      Not really. The light novel makes it clearer but Aoi was his goal from the start. Freeing Sakura was supposed to make Aoi love him.
      Its something he obsessed even before Zero's events and sent lots of signals towards her but Aoi genuinely loved Tokiomi and did not see Kariya as anything but a friend.

    • @ARandomGuy24
      @ARandomGuy24 9 років тому +1

      Harry Dresden So what separates a Light Novel from a normal novel?

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +2

      ARandomGuy
      Light novel primarily targets teens to young adults and is anime-genre-focused.
      The term comes from the term "light reading", thus light novels mostly are fictional fantasy or scifi works in anime setting, with some illustrations there and here.

    I'm sorry but Fate/Zero openings and endings are probably my favourite ever. They really hit my feels HARD. Especially after you know the whole story.
    I still feel that you underestimate this show. I honestly think it's one of the best piece of art ever. That Kings drinking wine scene had me questioning my outlook on life. And the depressing conclusion had me feeling disturbed and sad for weeks. Also, knowing the outcome of story is the main reason why I think watching F/Z before Stay Night is a must. SN is not as good and kinda ruins this experience and you lose nothing if you watch it after this but you lose A LOT if you watch it before this.

    300 bucks for the Blu-Ray?!
    I don't care how god-like this anime is no body should be paying that much money for an anime.
    If I wanted to blow 300 bucks I'd buy a WiiU or a PS4.
    This show on Blu-Ray should be 50 to 60 dollars at the most, I know dubbing is expensive and I know this show must of cost a small fortune to make but that does not justify a 300 dollar price tag.

    The ending of Zero is INTENTIONALLY predictable. Fate/Zero is a Greek tragedy - you are seeing how the bits and pieces of plotlines and characters you know from FSN(either visual novel or the currently airing adaptation, not the 2006 anime original storyline) are falling in the place towards the predetermined outcome. That's where the depth comes and that's the intention with which Zero was written - to expand upon what you learn in FSN. Fate/Zero is not about how it will end. its about journey towards it.
    *For those asking about watching order:*
    ANIME ONLY:
    1) Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2014
    2) Fate Stay Night: Heavens Feel movies (2015/2016)
    3) Fate Zero
    For those who can read but want to primarily focus on anime:
    1) Fate route of the visual novel
    2) Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2014
    3) Heaven's FEel route of visual novel(so you get the content faster instead of waiting for 2016)
    4) Fate/Zero
    5) Wait for Heaven's FEel movies to see the badassery animated.
    Zero is meant to be seen last because it is an expansion material that is written with the idea of taking *EVERY SINGLE PLOT TWIST IN FATE STAY NIGHT VISUAL NOVEL* and expanding upon it. Zero assumes you know EVERYTHING from FSN visual novel(lore, how the things work, how characters are connected, etc) and you are interested in seeing how all those pieces fell into place. Without FSN knowledge you lose a LOT of enjoyment and complexity from Fate/Zero and would be VERY confused at second half of it.

    • @hellgast0
      @hellgast0 9 років тому +53

      "Zero assumes you know EVERYTHING from FSN visual novel(lore, how the things work, how characters are connected, etc) and you are interested in seeing how all those pieces fell into place."
      Yeah we didn't get everything from the first two episodes that were pure exposition at all.
      "Without FSN knowledge you lose a LOT of enjoyment and complexity from Fate/Zero and would be VERY confused at second half of it."
      Right.. I lost so much enjoyment, that's why it's one of my favorite shows...
      From *personal* experience I enjoyed the show without any knowledge about the fate series and I was excited ufotable was going to adapt the original material.
      I get that I "ruined" the plot twists (still don't know what they are though), but atm having watched F/Z makes the enjoyement of UBW for *me* a lot better. And there is really nothing *you* can say to change that. (except for actually spoiling everything I don't know yet)

    • @dragonwarriorz1
      @dragonwarriorz1 9 років тому +9

      Benjamin Vanhees Yeah, I know what you mean about the plot twists. If you know nothing about Fate stay night in the first place, then the viewer probably won't even know what the hell the plot twists are.

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +35

      Benjamin Vanhees
      Zero first two episodes are condensed recap of maybe ~15% of needed information. It in no way helps to understand what the fuck is going on in whole second half of Zero.
      ANd yes you lose a lot of enjoyment of Zero - without FSN context, Zero is just a battle royale.
      Without the complex characterization and struggle Shirou goes through, Kiritsugu is just another antihero.
      as an example - last scene of Zero with Kerry on the stairs - the context of WHAT Is happening there(that he is dying) is only known for those with fate knowledge, while those who start with it lose all the emotional context of that scene.
      Same with Kirei's character journey in parallel to Shirou's. Most of Zero depth comes from FSN
      As for twists - you already know who killed Tokiomi(MAJOR PLOT POINT in UBW), you already know why Rin acts the way she does(discovering why is the major point of the whole UBW route), you already know who Sakura is(the mystery of which is the WHOLE POINT of upcoming heaven's feel movies), you already know who Saber is, you already know there's more than 7 servants, you already know Illya's motives(which are supposed to keep you guessing) and so on. I could go on for several pages.

      @dragonwarriorz1 9 років тому +1

      Harry Dresden Yeah that is true

      @triplesocks 9 років тому +8

      Benjamin Vanhees You still enjoyed, but you certainly would've liked it more if you were seeing the backstory to characters you only heard about, and if you actually understood the ending. And it might seem like it makes F/SN better at the beggining, but believe me when I say that you've had a TON of stuff ruined for you later on, both in UBW and a lot more in Heaven's Feel.

      Because he embodies what it means to be a hero. Caster was a sick and disturbed mage, and the berserker simply lost his sense of humanity. Christian Gueta It is intentionally predictable. Fate/Zero is the countdown to the moment where the main story started. Its intention is to expand upon what you learned in FSN(either visual novel or currently airing one, not the 2006 one), so you can see how all the pieces fell into place.

    I like how simple the idea is. Like AoT and SAO, there's so much potential in the simplist of ideas. And just like AoT there are good executions of ideas, and like SAO there are bad ones.
    I recon you could make 100 stories based around the same story and setting of Fate/Zero. I'm actually surprised the web isn't full of dozens of fan-fics about someone own take on the Holy Grail war. It's such a welcoming environment that I recon anyone can write a story on it. Just look and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - litterally thousands of fanfics are written about either characters from the show or their own OC's (and some of them are good - like really REALLY good (e.g. "Turnabout Storm"). So I'm literally surprised there aren't tones of other holy grail war stories online with people own cast of original characters and historical figures.

    • @lincolnbeckett8791
      @lincolnbeckett8791 8 років тому +1

      +jeramahia123 I'm writing one right now. However its more a combination of the concept of the holy grail war with the story and characters of The Legend of Zelda.

    • @TiaMoshii
      @TiaMoshii 8 років тому +1

      +jeramahia123 If there's something I know for sure about fanfiction is that the setting doesn't matter (unless it's Hogwarts, then everyone has to go there). Look at AoT fanfics for example (18k in number) only 10% of the stories are in canon and the rest are AUs (mostly modern world and highschool). Fate series is nowhere near as popular as AoT (only 2,6k) and among the few that exist most of them are about Fate/Stay Night. The most popular thing about Fate/Stay Night is Shirou and his harem because that's what people like to read so that's what gets the most attention. I have seen attempts at "my own take on the Holy Grail War" but when all that you get is 20 views and 1 review about "OMG, this story is the real deal" then you get discouraged very quickly and give up. So the reason why there are no fanfics like the ones you described is because firstly Fate series is not very popular on FF.net, secondly the setting no matter how intriguing doesn't matter and thirdly fanfics work on supply and demand and the demand is (sadly) Shirou/harem.

    • @jeramahia123
      @jeramahia123 8 років тому

      TiaMoshii You should see just how many fanfics there are of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - 75k on FIMFiction alone.
      And that's not counting all the UA-cam works. They've made an entire audiobook series that has Doctor Who as a pony (Doctor Whooves). And a 9-hour-long crossover series with Phoenix Wright - which ACTUALLY feels like a real Phoenix Wright game, and it's AWESOME and HILARIOUS!!!

    This is one of my all-time favorite anime, and in my opinion one of the best prequels I have ever seen, anime or otherwise. I agree with everything you said, though I didn't notice some of the things you mentioned with the music. The show is absolutely gorgeous, and I honestly think knowing the ending actually improves the story, if for no other reason than the absolute chills you get when starting the first episode.

    The concept of a 'prequel' is pretty much always down looked upon with either skepticism or just negativity. And I get why. But why do some prequels fall flat? Is it because just knowing how the journey will end that takes away the experience? Or is it because they aren't given the proper attention to detail and effort they need?
    When audiences watched Titanic, they all knew the ship would sink, yet it became a world phenomenon. When readers of A Song of Ice and Fire watched the Game of Thrones tv show, they knew of the Red Wedding, yet praised the twist anyway. Or Wonder Woman, a superhero movie that takes place before any of other DCEU films was widely loved by audiences, despite everyone knowing how it would end.
    For me, I think a prequel works best when there is just enough mystery surrounding its mythos to allow audiences to want to see how the story unfolds. But another way that works is if everyone never suspected that what they were watching/reading was actually a prequel to begin with.

    As someone who started watching the Fate series (with no knowledge of it beforehand) I can definitely say that Zero, was absolutely amazing. And since I didn't know of Stay Night's plot the entire ending was a surprise to me. And so if you're reading this and haven't watched any of the Fate series, start with Zero.... And then maybe do Unlimited Blade Works... Which I found to be inferior to Zero in every way except in Animation.

    • @NathanWubs
      @NathanWubs 8 років тому +8

      +EtchaSketch333 Yes, the main character was the bad archetype of. Weak male character with strong female character. Male character becoming stronger and putting the strong female character into a weak a spot.
      It was really a thing for a while with the anime at that time. And still is in some cases today. Like with SAO , Asuna now being a more a healer then anything else.
      Not to mention fate/stay kinda got ruined for me. When it was more based on the H-game instead of the novel.

    Fate Zero always had my attention. The characters put their all into obtaining the Grail at whatever the moral cost and I was rooting for more than one character. Unlimited Blade Works left me dosing at times because I never really felt attached to the characters and I got sick of the high school relationship BS. It was like the SAO's plot downfall. As for the other season.... not gonna lie, I didn't know there were 3 of these. Guess I better go watch Stay Night.

      Hunter Exam>Nen Development>Yorknew City/Phantom Troupe>Greed Island>Chimera Ant>Election (is really the Dark Continent, but the show stopped before then)

    Finished this show yesterday - Really impressed and surprisingly satisfied. Good and complex characters, a story that take the viewer seriously (no fan service, plots and themes worthy of thought, and an appropriate amount of "darkness") and, as you said, stunning visuals. Unquestionably a part of my top 5.

    I feel like when ufotable finish their F/SN adaptation we might get something really close to perfection if put together with F/Z as one whole anime divided into two parts..
    And as for the soundtrack Yuki Kajiura did for F/Z I personally think it fits it quite well and it wouldn't have been the same if someone else (i.e. Kawai) did it.

    • @MyFeuerFrey
      @MyFeuerFrey 9 років тому +1

      Daria Maksimova Not really. Zero is just a bonus material. Ufotable's UBW and HF are what works together. Zero is just additional information expanding on what you learned.

    • @sonte99
      @sonte99 9 років тому

      Lol no. F/0 and F/SN, even if we imagine it as an anime divided into two parts still isn't going to be anything above average, possibly a 7/10. Fate/ is one of the most overrated franchises I've ever seen. It's nowhere near perfect, nor is it a masterpiece.

    • @jb687827
      @jb687827 9 років тому

      Harry Dresden UBW and HF are contradictory versions of the same story. Alternate timelines really don't mesh well together.

    • @MyFeuerFrey

      jb687827
      They do not mesh together story-wise because they do not have two. But they mesh together thematically, exploring two sides of same argument

    • @Kronosfall91
      @Kronosfall91 9 років тому

      I highly doubt it. Zero and UBW have VERY different feels to each other. Zero benefited greatly from Urobuchi's writing. While UBW suffers from Nasu's.
      The world and lore Nasu built is quite intricate and impressive, however his writing and pacing is kinda all over the place.
      It's quite hard for me to view the two of them as a whole.
      Maybe with the HF movies...

    • @munin_0114
      @munin_0114 9 років тому

      johannes Andersen You can watch it before or after Fate/Stay Night, depending on how you want to view it. Fate/Stay (at least the current version) has some issues with it's animation, being a fair bit different from Fate/Zero (hard for me to specify, though looking at some pictures may give you some idea of what it is.) The same studio that made Fate/Zero is also currently producing another version of Fate/stay that follows a different plot from the original, but has the same connections that Fate/Zero has with the original adaptation.

    • @jmoak14
      @jmoak14 9 років тому

      GunNlazor lol no. you will spoil the story of fate zero if you watch stay night first. Your thinking of sequel here. SN is also just airing so theres good time to watch zero before that.

    I know you Americans have it bad with Aniplex USA, so I thought I'd provide you with some links.
    If you have a region free BD player, you can import the U.K. BDs for a fraction of the price.
    Part 1: www.amazon.co.uk/Fate-Zero-Pt-1-Blu-ray/dp/B00IIK6C74/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417815044&sr=8-1&keywords=fate%2Fzero (about 28-29 dollars)
    Part 2: www.amazon.co.uk/Fate-Zero-Pt-2-Blu-ray/dp/B00IIK6BV6/ref=pd_bxgy_d_h__img_y (about 29-30 dollars)
    I don't know about import fees; you'll have to figure that one out.

    Best. Anime. I. Have. Ever. Watched. By. Far
    Its just glorious, it ticks all of my boxes except comedy but that's and excusable one in this sense (i should add as well that Zero was my introduction to the Fate franchise)
    My word, Kirei and Gil are the favourite characters ever, the gradual development of their relationship, the mystery of Gil and the extent of his power (until the fight with Iskandar), the basically emotionless Kirei on a search to find answers for himself and his rivalry with Kiritsugu whilst being guided along that path by Gil which eventually turns him into the boi i know and love
    Waver and Iskandar are amazing, the relationship, growth and finale for them
    And then the twists and turns like Tokiomi seemingly being the most likely one to win the grail with Gil and his years of planning out the whole war is just taken out in a matter of seconds. Diarmud being suddenly forced to kill himself and Kayneth thinking he's safe due to the contract but then Maya takes him out.
    *chef's kiss* it is just glorious

    Most of the dub was fitting enough to be slightly under on par with the sub. Gilgamesh, however, sounded terrible in English. He sounded like a generic Hollywood villain. Also, his Japanese voice conveyed the arrogance much better.
