    This anime will always have a special place in my collection. As of right now it's the closest adaptation we have to a Fate arc, and since I'm such a Saber fan, I absolutely love it regardless of it's less ambitious nature.

    One thing I like about watching Fate/Stay Night first before Fate/Zero, is that Fate/Zero plays out spectacularly like a tragedy. You know what the end result will be, but you don't know how it happened to be and there is a lot of intrest built in Stay Night about the backstories.

    • @mohamedelhediissa289
      @mohamedelhediissa289 3 роки тому +1

      An unexpected tragedy is a better tragedy
      And if you want a tragedy where you know from episode 1 that whatever the characters do they will have a bad ending then just rewatch it
      It's a win win situation

    So fucking sick of people saying Fate/Zero is better than Fate/Stay Night simply because they never played the original game. So sick of people watching on F/Z and thinking it's some hotshit when the original wasn't all that by itself.

    • @BlackGrailKiara
      @BlackGrailKiara 9 років тому +5

      Agreed. I would also say the Fate/Zero light novel is miles ahead of the adaption, though Ufotable did a wonderful job adapting it.

      I do not know if you watched his review just now, but as he said (and a lot of people agree), an anime adaptation should be able to stand on its own. Compared to Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night was terrible.
      Obviously there is personal taste and opinions, but the quality of the show, and general opinion among viewers has Fate/Zero as being superior. I watched Fate/Zero first, and had to force myself through Fate/Stay Night, and it was not easy. I am excited for the new version coming out, I do not know if it will quite compare to Fate/Zero, but I have high hopes.

    • @combatbenyamin
      @combatbenyamin 9 років тому +6

      Cameron Wallace Ah sorry if I made you misunderstand. I was talking about the people who only watched F/Z and having only the F/SN anime to watch afterwards dismiss the story as garbage. While sure the F/SN adaption was quite poorly made and definitely could have been improved the source material was very well made however and it's such a shame that its only representative is the F/SN anime. I don't mind people bashing the anime in particular, but when start saying the original story itself was garbage without actually trying it just grinds my gears.

    • @HolyWarrior113
      @HolyWarrior113 9 років тому

      ***** Oh, I gotcha mate. I am honestly really excited for the Fate/Stay Night remake (essentially). I watched Unlimited Blade Works and thought that with some polishing up, and elongating the story (obviously) it could be pretty good.
      I cannot make any comments on the Visual Novels, I have never played them myself.

  • @armi999

    As I recall Rin teams up with Shiro because Saber injures Archer early on putting her at a disadvantage till Archer is healed. In her own arc Archer isn't hurt, so she doesn't team up with him (at least at the start)
    I'd definitely watch this before Zero, not just for the massive quality difference but because Zero has a ton of spoilers for various aspects of all 3 arcs.

      Yeah I loved the soundtrack from FSN. I became a big fan of Kenji Kawai's work after first listening to his dark and brooding tracks from Gundam 00. Was not disappointed with his pieces in FSN and UBW either.

      Kenji Kawai's OST is nothing special since the visual novel's OST was already brilliant and most of FSN ost is just remixes of that. Fukasawa's OST for remake will grind that into dust.

    i feel the same about Code Geass. the first time i watched it it was AMAZING BALLZ. but recently i wathced it again, and after knowing all the plot twists, i was able to see the numerous flaws in the story.({SPOILERS}but still Shirley's death... and Euphy's death... and Lelouch's death... like if you cry evertime...)

    • @Giga4ever
      @Giga4ever 9 років тому

      Lelouch's death? He survived if you pay attention at the end. His sister touched him and got a look into is brain, which only happens when touching "Immortality"-Code wielder. Also C.C. was kinda talking to him in the end.

    • @anipaper2
      @anipaper2 9 років тому +19

      ................
      yeah he is dead.
      none of what you said is official, and most likely simply fans' theory.
      the most likely thing, and the thing that gives the series the awesome ending it deserves, is that nunnally simply connected the dots, and understood on her own what was lelouch's plan(it's a bit debatable but still), and that lelouch DIED in the end and CC simply spoke to herself/the audience.

    • @darkprinc979
      @darkprinc979 9 років тому +8

      anipaper2
      And let's not forget that it's not uncommon for characters in anime to talk to the dead. Japan has a highly spiritual culture and a big part of that is respect for the dead.

    • @HolyWarrior113
      @HolyWarrior113 9 років тому +10

      anipaper2 Why Lelouch is alive:
      1. Nunally got his memories. I do not care about the foolish "she figured it out" sort of comments, the large amount of flash images that occurred tell us she got more than a vague notion to an intricate plot/plan. Also, very convenient she figured it out RIGHT when she touched his hand, especially when the memories of those with Codes are transferred upon physical contact.
      2. C.C's dialogue at the end. You can say she was talking to his spirit or what not, but do you forget about the existence of the cart driver? Plus, we have seen that C.C does not just talk to no one. We often thought she might be, but we learned that was Marianne she was speaking to all along.
      3. There are a multitude of reasons based on how Codes are transferred. One has to progress to the final stages of Geass to take/receive a Code. You can take a Code, Charles took V.V's Code, and Lelouch took Charles'. People will say Lelouch could not take Charles' Code because he did not give him his Geass, a foolish argument because Charles was going to take C.C's, who did not give Charles his Geass.
      4. A Code's activation upon death fit's perfectly with Suzaku killing Lelouch. With the varying and unspecified time amounts for the revival of those with Codes, it is logical to assume it would be possible for Lelouch's body to remain in "death" until it was moved.
      5. You can also argue things from the perspective of story telling. C.C's one true wish was not just an interesting piece of information, Lelouch being alive with her fits in that context.
      Likewise from a storytelling perspective, you can take the cart driver. (I am discounting the possible ending of the driver's face, as I am not sure if it is real). Careful consideration was taken to show a cart driver but not show his face, even panning past the face while still showing nothing. This is a very large potential hint that "hey! This guy is someone we know!!"
      I have also seen a ton of people reference the creators quote which "confirms Lelouch's death", but even that is taken out of context, (respond and I will address it)
      Lelouch is alive 100%.

    • @darkprinc979
      @darkprinc979 9 років тому

      Well to be fair Word of God can easily contradict what is actually written into a story. That said, as far as I'm concerned Lelouch is dead.

    I love the Fate series so much it's been my all time favorite for years ever since the visual novel regardless of flaws. Sure some flaws are worse than others but the over all story I just love it so much. And Saber ...... My God she is amazing she practically carries the entire franchise for me. She's strong, she's capable and has to be the one servant who has fought for the Grail the hardest.
    But I also feel bad for her because really the Grail has caused her nothing but trouble. If the Grail chose me and I was Saber's Master...... Scratch that if I was Saber's "Partner" my wish would be simple.
    I'd wish Saber free from the Grail so that she'd never be dragged into the wars ever again and let her start a new life without the influence of the Grail.

    • @FeuerFremder
      @FeuerFremder 9 років тому +2

      David Stoddart Too bad Grail does not work that way and no matter what you wish it ends up destroying humanity, so no. No matter what Saber's end would always be the same.

    • @Wolfs0n
      @Wolfs0n 9 років тому

      FeuerFremder Doesn't mean I have to like it.
      Saber doesn't deserve to suffer the way she has. She also deserves a better master but she got stuck with Mr. Chivalry.
      Like Arkada said "Big difference between Chivalry and a DEATH WISH"!

    • @FeuerFremder
      @FeuerFremder 9 років тому +1

      David Stoddart Accepting the consequences of her life's decision and passing on peacefully IS the best ending for Saber. Also the whole point of Shirou's character IS that its not "chivalry". His personality has nothing to do with chivalry. Then again the previous adaptation never quite portrayed his broken mind correctly.

    • @Wolfs0n
      @Wolfs0n 9 років тому +1

      FeuerFremder But passing on peacefully still doesn't free her from the grail. Another mage could just summon her from before her passing.
      Saber is my all time favorite female lead of anime and it doesn't sit right with me that she'll never be free of the grail so long as the wars continue. Destroying once already there's no indication that it will never come back. Meaning more wars and more pointless battles for her.

    • @Wolfs0n
      @Wolfs0n 9 років тому

      Hell Shiro at some point even becomes the Archer servant that Rin summoned. (uhh Spoiler alert btw)
      With that kind of power he should at some point figure out a way to set her free.

The most recent season finale to its sequel is still fresh in my mind, and whenever someone mentions characters or character development, I can't help but think of how masterful in that regard the Avatar series is.
    I am not asking for a review (though that would be excellent) as someone who knows you haven't watched it (or at least I don't believe you have), I highly recommend you watch Airbender and its sequel, Korra. Both are excellent shows.

    Just wanted to say again, since I've seen this so often down in the comments: Do NOT watch Fate Zero first. People who say watch Fate Zero first don't have a clue what they're talking about and probably also recommend watching Star Wars Episode I-III before watching the old Trilogy.
    Fate Zero is a prequel. You're supposed to know how it ends. The suspense is in not knowing HOW it happens. By watching Fate Zero first, a lot of stuff goes unexplained and a lot of plot twists in Fate Stay Night are completely spoiled since the show assumes that you already are familiar with the Nasuverse and it's specific rules. Also you will never be able to grasp the importance and the full emotional impact of some scenes of Fate Zero if you don't know the story of FSN (preferably played the VN especially the "Heaven's Feel"-route) or even Tsukihime. So if you are able to watch or play FSN first, do so. It will greatly enhance both your understanding and your fun while watching the show.

    I was inclined to make a full fanboy rant about Deen's adaptation, but I changed my mind and will just say this instead:
    Disregarding all the minor flaws, Deen's biggest crime with this was that they failed to capture Emiya, his ideals and personal growth are the core of the story in all the three routes. Failing to adapt that is to throw away the backbone of the story thus failing the adaptation, which studio Deen did.
    In the anime, Shirou was (and remained) nothing but a vegetable, which is sad since he's probably one of the most complex characters in Fate.

      +C. Chapatte (NostalgikFuture) He gets a far better deal in the reboot Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. Not least because the animation (bless Ufotable) gives so much to the battle scenes and therefore watching him fight is a joy. But also I believe he gets more screen time. Top awesome moments, imo, are in episodes 16 and 20. Won't spoil anything though: watch it if you haven't already! :D

    As someone who also, at a time, thought this series was my favorite, i feel the need to give my thoughts on it(or rather, my thoughts on it in relation to Fate/Zero). I watched Fate/Stay Night LONG before Fate/Zero(the anime) was ever made. When i first watched fate/stay night, i thought it was awesome, the second time i watched it, i thought it was even better. For whatever reason, the more i see it, the more i love it(ive watched it 5 times or so, with the most recent watch being a few months back). I disagree with people who say things like "if you watch Fate/Zero first, then fate/stay night will look like shit in comparison", i guess its because of how i look at things in general. I think both fate/zero and fate/stay night are awesome, but in completely different ways. Fate/Zero has a more dark and tragic tone to it, whereas Fate/Stay Night is alot more romantic in tone/theme. They actually complement eachother quite well, i find it extremely fun to watch them back to back. I guess it might just be me who thinks these things, so take my opinion with a grain of salt i guess

    Yay!!!! New posters in view of the camera!!!! I love the new scenery!!! Although, I miss the Major....ANYWAY
    Great review as always. I tried watching Stay Night a long time ago, but I couldn't get into it due to the "relationship sub-plot" between Shiro and Saber...I wish it focused more on the actual fighting instead of the relationships in the war. Fate/Zero on the other hand had an equal balance of the inter-story relationship and fighting, and I was genuinely concerned and intrigued with EVERY single character...even the psychopath master voiced by Mr. Johnny Young Bosch ^^ and you know...Crispin Freeman's character...because you know....Crispin Freeman XD I love Saber...but I just wish she was given better moments in Stay Night...because she was WAY cooler in Zero.
    Even not comparing the two, I just didn't get into it, even though I hadn't seen Zero yet, Stay Night just wasn't all to interesting and didn't give me enough entertainment. It isn't the "worst anime ever" (still school days), but I'd consider it like a 4 or 5. Average.
    CGI DRAGON.
    That is all.

    Fate/Stay Night is hated on way too much. I watched it first even though I had Fate/Zero on my HDD and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I got a lot more out of Fate/Zero precisely because I'd watched F/SN first. I later watched the UBW movie and really enjoyed that as well. I would also say to everyone that if you're an anime-only person (like me) then the only way to get the WHOLE story of Fate/ would be to watch ALL the shows in the order they came out because F/SN has 3 routes, one of which has been covered in detail (Fate). I say watch in the order they came out because F/Z is better than F/SN but the latter is still worthy of being watched.

      @FeuerFremder 9 років тому +129

      SilverVeil Fate/Zero is not supposed to HAVE suspense. Its built around the viewer knowing HOW it ends but now how it all gets to there. Even the title references the countdown to zero when the actual storyline begins(at the last episode)
      Fate/Zero is a complementary material that showcases HOW it all got to what one sees in FSN(not DEENFSN though). You are supposed to know how it ends, because Fate/Zero fills in the gaps on what you learn in FSN.Watching Fate/Zero first spoils way more.

    Context. Something sorely lacking in comment boxes.
    Is the original F/SN anime dated? Good Lord, yes ("People die when they are killed?!").
    Does the VN and its companion, F/HA, still stand up well? Yes, they do.
    That's why Type-Moon can keep coming back to draw from this well again and again: the source material is rock-solid. It's even able to generate the "Ilya," "F0," and "Carnival Phantasm" spin-offs.
    Criticize the VN for what it is, or the animes that followed, but please be specific and stay in context.
    Fate Zero is one of my three go-to animes when trying to recruit new people (adults) to our hobby. Does that mean I hate the VN or other adaptations? Of course not. The original F/SN anime was released in 2006, so produced in 2005; a LOT of anime water has run under the bridge of Fandom in those years. Nasu is an astonishing writer, and I look forwards to more and more series.

      Clayton Barnett FOr someone who pretends to know the visual novel, its surprising that you keep misusing the die when killed quote. First of all its incomplete, its not a question, its a statement - "People die when they are killed, that's the way it should always be". Second of all, its a very common saying within Buddhism-influenced parts of the world. Third of all, it makes perfect sense in context(Saber is protesting the idea of Shirou giving up Avalon, the item which made Shirou survive killing blows and he says that dead should stay dead, which applies both to giving up avalon AND to Saber's own dream/wish at saving her country)

    yeeaahh let me get my thoughts out of the way. after having played the visual novel, here are my thoughts on Emiya.
    Fate route (which this anime is mostly based on): IDIOT!! HE COULD HAVE DIED!! and yes, sexist. yeah there is no salvaging him on this one. he does develop sure but it is late.
    Unlimited blade works (which will get a better adaption this year): He got a lot more depth in this route. He is less of an idiot, not a sexist, and gets a few badass moments later on (THANK GOD). pretty much there is a chance of liking him in this one.
    Heaven's Feel: okay, this is the most controversial Emiya you will get since some love him and some hate him for understandable reasons. On one hand, he is considered broken and a selfish prick who would risk the ENTIRE WORLD TO PROTECT THE ONE GIRL HE LOVES!! (that girl being Sakura) But on the other hand, he is considered to be the most human and most relatable Emiya in addition to being a certified badass (seriously, play the vn or watch the upcoming movie to find out why). Personally i love this Emiya. so which one do you or would you like? good review by the way!

    • @FeuerFremder
      @FeuerFremder 9 років тому +1

      Nope. Both Fate and HF Shirous are NOT considered to be "most human" since they are broken extremes and polar opposites. UBW Shirou is healthiest since its the compromise between the two.
      Fate Shirou is NOT sexist. He is Shirou-ist - anyone who is not Emiya Shirou should never be allowed to protect Emiya Shirou because its worse than death. The "because you are a girl" comment he makes is him literally blurting out the random thing that comes to his head to hide the real reasons why he can't bear others doing anything for him.

    • @mattn915
      @mattn915 9 років тому

      yeah i'll give you that. it's true that both Fate and HF Shirous are complete opposites as in Fate, he kept clinging on to his ideals while in HF, he pretty much threw them away.
      And yeah, i wouldn't say "most human" now because it looked like Shirou, who was broken in the first place, seems to have broken AGAIN with the intent of doing so in a different way with Sakura, who was also broken in the first place (even fate/zero showed that... *gag). i could be wrong/misguided, but that's what i thought. i mean it was only his life at risk before, but then it became EVERYTHING. maybe the reason why i said i liked HF Shirou the best is because i find the romance between two broken people to be a beautiful thing and his strong will to follow through after giving up his ideals had me swayed.
      and i think we should just consider that comment to be one of his dumbass moments.

      Oh... Wow. The source material contains full-on h-scenes... That genuinely surprised me when I looked it up, I thought you were bullshitting. Welp.

    The anime doesn't hold a candle to the visual novel. Lots of errors, lots of stuff left out, and magic makes a whole lot more sense when actually explained in the VN. Of course, they simply CAN'T include all of the VN, let alone the complex rules of magic within the nasuverse.

    Still on hulu...
    I really enjoyed it because I listened to you and watched it first. Since then, I've watched Fate/Zero and UBW... which have blown my mind! But, I'm glad I saw this one first :)
