      @@nokoh yup you nailed it and its true for any sport. Sports specific stamina is what it comes down to. You could be a boxer but if you never played basketball, you will get gassed out quickly and not understand how to manage your endurance/energy properly. You could run a 5 minute mile but if you've never boxed before you will panic when backing up and waste all your energy and not understand how to remain calm. Performing the sport ive realized is the only really effective way to build your stamina. Anything else can be supplemental.

      @@loverofhumanity I struggle to spar 5 rounds. do you have any tips? I feel like I waste unnecessary energy and movements.

    • @loverofhumanity
      @loverofhumanity Рік тому +45

      @@senorbonbon ofcourse. My biggest advice is to learn how to recover from blitz attacks and also learning what to do when you're being pressured and having to fight off your back foot or when moving backwards.
      The first tip I'll give you is learning to control your breathing while circling around. This is mostly mental and understanding to relax in those moments when punches arent actually being thrown at you. Imagine if you were resting for 10 seconds. By 10 seconds you should be able to go again. Throw feints and jabs but relax your breathing and relax your body don't tense up. This doesnt mean throw lazy punches but it just means your understanding at certain times you're actually not throwing to kill, its a chess game and you are changing the pace, rythm etc.
      A good drill I used to do for conditioning is Id shadow box for 2 minutes, quickly sprint 200 meters and then finish by shadow boxing for a minute without a break. This last part mimics the fatigue component and having to keep your mind and body sharp while you're tired. Slow pace shadow boxing doesn't mimic sparring because it doesn't typically incorporate the change of paces which is actually what tired you out more than anything else. This is why you have to incorporate some element that fatigues you similar to that feeling you get when you're tired in sparring and feel like you cant go on. You must imagine an opponent in front of you especially during that final minute. Imagine him going hard and you have to stay composed and be smart.
      The second thing many fighters forget is clinching. You dont always have to throw wild. Sometimes a guy is faster than you, longer, maybe better stamina and you're tired. So tie up,. pressure, make it a dirty boxing match and try to smother him. One of the worst things you can do is when tired is try to throw volume and be at the end of his range. It's a common mistake but doesnt actually end well. When you do clinch, you have to learn to control and push his head, control with your punches, move him around and put your weight on him, the closer you are to him, the less likely anything he touches you with will actually do any damage. Control. This is a common thing new boxers don't understand. Yes, you have to have amazing hands but you also have to control his head and control where he moves. This allows you to land cleaner punches and also be able to rest when you're tired and he's putting a lot of pressure on you.
      Finally, sometimes learning to shell up but mastering the shell and understanding you dont always have to go at one pace. Actually thats what tired guys out. They throw a shitload of volume and then they can't maintain it for longer amounts of rounds. When you're tired start feinting, use jabs, throw with purpose when you do throw. Unfortunately a lot of guys begin to get desperate and just start throwing w.e when they're gassed. Stop doing that. Let your body reset by mastering how to breathe and not getting desperate. Do not start throwing recklessly when you're tired because you will feel like you're suffocating. Just stay relaxed, shell up if there is a blitz and keep moving your feet, counter lead hook, side step hooks. circle, move, don't throw with volume during those moments. Be okay with getting hit, it doesn't matter who you're, you will not dodge every single punch. And if you do try to do that you will just gas out and thats a recipe for disaster. So sometimes just staying composed and not doing too much unnessary movement and taking shots here and there is better for the overall fight. When you try to dodge and move around too much, throw punches without purpose and no gas tank, bad things will happen. Take a few punches once in a while, clinch if you feel its getting out of control , rest and reset.

    The running absolutely helps, but you still gotta do the things you're running to get more endurance for. SO ALSO DO MOOOORE BOXING. More intense shadowboxing, more bag work, more mitt work, more sparring. But don't neglect the running.

      Yes, running will help keep your legs stay active and work on general cardio... but without resistance/exercise from other joints. Using your body torque is much more exhausting. It made me realize that supplying oxygen is much more complex than I thought. Punching for a long time quickly gasses you if you don't practice it despite being able to run forever

      One excercise that helped me a lot to improve stamina is to add 5 burpees while you are shadowboxing, also 5 'knees to the chest' high jumps and keep shadowboxing. It drains you fast and forces you to control your mind and moves while exhausted

    I improved my stamina and breathing while boxing by No Joke, Singing. I would put on music and go for long walks singing as many songs as I could, trying to maintain pitch, rhythm the ability to finish the versus.
    I understand not everyone will be able to do this, but the lung and breathing training you get from singing massively improves that aspect of martial arts.

      @dennisrobinson8008 No, I've gained those skills through other means. Learning to sing and increasing the difficulty of singing i.e. walking while singing improves lung function and control of airflow.
      I wouldn't say I'm an amazing singer, but I can hold notes within my vocal range and have even begun being able to hit higher notes. With the improvement comes better control, which in some aspects carry over to my martial arts training.

    Running builds stamina like crazy. I used to run around a lake for 3.1 miles in combat boots. I wouldn't push myself hard at first. Did it in 25 minutes. Within 2 weeks I'd bring that down to under 20 minutes. I'd blow by other heavyweights who were jogging along in tennis shoes. Every day I'd add a few blocks. Within 2 months I'd do 2 laps in less than 40 minutes or 6.2 miles. It's amazing how your cardio endurance keeps climbing if you push yourself just a little. You can box 12 rounds and push the pace like crazy. I love to watch Oleksandr Usyk. In his first Joshua fight AJ was dying in the 12th round. He barely finished. He walked to his corner and collapsed on his stool. His face had a tortured look like a NDE. I remember Jerry Quarry being called a "10 second a round fighter" because of his stalling and dilatory pace throwing 20 punches a round. He usually ran only a mile or 2. He had little endurance. For Thad Spencer Jerry ran 5 miles, dominated the fight, finished very strong, scoring a KO with 3 seconds left in the 12th. But he thought all the running made him too skinny and he weighed only 192. He went back to running 1 mile. One thing you can do is eat a lot more. And lift weights for an hour -- in a scientific manner. Usyk put on 23 pounds to become a heavyweight. And he maintained his unbelievable stamina and work rate.

      Running is a skill within itself,if you learn to breathe properly you will not get "winded". The stamina you need in boxing is in the muscles used.Not from running; you would be better off swimming which uses most of the muscles in the body.

    • @bobgarrett7134
      @bobgarrett7134 2 місяці тому

      @@GaryMorris2112 No matter how well you breathe you'll get winded if you don't run (or swim) long distances. Running is for cardio conditioning NOT punching endurance. You punch enough heavy bags, speed bags, double-end bags, focus pads, and spar-mates to build punching endurance like crazy. Lifting weights also helps with punching power and arm endurance. You WILL have punching endurance so don't worry abut it. You may not have great cardio -- and there's nothing like long hard runs for cardio -- and never getting tired -- like 7 miles in combat boots and feeling as fresh when you're done as when you started.

Your not getting better by running you may gain more stamina but mainly for running, plus youre asking for knee injuries, so why? 12 good rounds is better training than an hour of running, unless your a runner.

The way I actually improved it was doing drills IN the ring and lots of light sparring and moving around in it for rounds. I was close with one of the Garcias from Oxnard as well, and they only ran for weight control and that's it. Outside of that, jogging/running isn't much a part of their training as we saw throughout Mikey Garcia's career for example, he never got tired.

      @Matt_Alaric 4 місяці тому

      Nope, jogging is one of the best ways to improve your aerobic system that we know of. You still need to do specific training on top of that to get sport fit, but as an aerobic base there's very little that compares to running for effectiveness.

    • @Jandro1083
      @Jandro1083 4 місяці тому

      @@Matt_Alaric I don't care what data you have. I have actual experience and I'm not the only one here who has experienced the same. Have you boxed? Way different from jogging, just not the same focus, thus will not increase your stamina. That's like saying that if you sit on a lat pull down machine and pull down your body weight for a couple of weeks, that'll translate into you being able to do the same amount of pull up reps, which is not the case. Tons of people pull down and bench press more than their body weight, yet can't perform one push up or pull up.

    • @Matt_Alaric
      @Matt_Alaric 4 місяці тому

      @@Jandro1083 And i don't care about your anecdote, i'm telling you what the scientific facts are. Jogging will and does improve your aerobic capacity, aerobic power, and VO2 max. It will improve all the measures of cardiovascular fitness and performance. Whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant.

    One thing i do thats helped a lot , is to do your combat training with zero to minimal breaks inbetween sets/rounds. Going from bag, to shadow box, back to bag or speed bag with no breaks. Id do 12 rounds of 3-5 min each , zero breaks. Running doesnt help unless youre swinging your punches while also jogging.

    Thank you so much, especially for the section on recovering. I've been trying to force myself out of the stop-and-go training.
    I'll spar before working a shift at the neighborhood express lube and after a few days blasting it on burning the candle at both ends, psychologically and eventually physically, I'll shut down and scramble to get it together on will power.. never works and its a highly discouraging cycle. But that said, I'm doubling down on the recuperation between training sessions..
    Thank you!

    Everything from the in depth explanation of breathing between combos and the importance of letting the body rest and properly clean up is A-tier advice.
    My own advice would be, try to breathe explosively on every hit. For example when you're bench pressing, you wanna inhale when lowering the bar and exhale explosively when you lift it up. In martial arts you wanna have these small explosive breaths by making sounds 'ha' (each individual got their own sounds). Sound makes the air come out better and much more efficiently, so there's a reason why you hear muay thai fighters make funny 'OWAAAAY' sounds, its actually got a purpose xD.

    Difference between static low intensity cardio and dynamic high intensity cardio. Fight stamina requires training with adrenaline, adapting the body to become energy efficient under the influence of adrenaline, cortisol and other stress factors. Running and jogging will not induce anywhere close to the same level of adaptation to those stress factors, which is why it doesn’t translate UNLESS you reach a level where you can remain calm under duress, reducing the stress hormone response and keeping similar biochemical levels to running, i.e. upper echelon fighters with tons of experience.

    Uhhhh what? I remember watching the ultimate run in another video. I thought i'll try that. A few months went by. I tried it. But my memory was bad. I only did each distance once. 8,6,4 hundred. After a month a finally threw in the last 2 hundred, only to come here and find out I was supposed to do each distance twice! If your going to do something do it right. If no one hear's from me again let the world know I died doing something I hate. Thanks Tony!

    one day sprints 5 10 and 15 metres or 10 15 and 20 depending how big you are, day off, next day intermittent jogging 5 minutes on five minutes off at a low to mid pace , day off , next day 4 to 5 mile jog...........done. if you want to do anything on on the last day just do some skipping and line work, every fourth week you should drop your 4 mile jog down to maybe a mile and a half and that weeks sprints should be hill sprints

    Sprinting up a steep hill definitely builds burst stamina. If you are having trouble going the distance, roadwork has worked since boxing was invented. Just think about if you have difficulty running just a mile. The first time is rough, but then maybe a week later you find out you can go a bit more. Then you are running marathons and could go 15 if that were still legal. Just make sure you run on grass and not pavement.
