  • In this video I attempt to breakdown the lyrics of Iron Maidens Hallowed Be Thy Name and interpret them to best of my knowledge.
Hey guys this is a new format for us on this channel, your feedback is imperative. I wasn't sure if I wanted to add sound effects to the entire video because I thought it would be too distracting. Let me know what you guys think. How can I make these breakdowns more informative.

Love the concept. Try "Born Again" by Black Sabbath! It's a one-off album with a one-off vocalist at a very interesting point in history. Evangelists, long-haired white kids, and devil music. Iron Maiden got tied up in that train wreck by mere mention of "the devil". Yeah, there was some marketing that drew attention. Marketing is the key to success. So who's wrong? I can't sell my services with shock but I would if I could.

I LOVE watching these. I just watched like 12 of them tonight. But just my opinion.... I think when you listen to the songs for the first time, you should ALWAYS watch the videos that have the lyrics on the screen so you know what they are saying, it would be way more helpful (and meaningful) in a lot of the songs, especially Iron Maiden. I remember as a kid reading the lyrics in the cassette tape covers. And steer clear of live performances, since it's the first time you're ever hearing the song. Remember, the first time we all heard them was the studio recording on a 8-track, record or cassette tape, then we went and saw it live in concert later.
And you definitely have to do a video on 'THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER' by Iron Maiden(with lyrics - you will probably need them to help you understand it for the first time) and 'WAR PIGS' by Black Sabbath. Both great songs. You will LOVE the story in Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I would also recommend 'The Gallows Pole' by Led Zeppelin, you will enjoy it.

In grade 10, we had to pick a song and do an oral presentation on it. The teacher would play the song, we would explain it, then she'd play it again so that the class could hear it again with a new perspective.
I did mine on Alexandre the Great, and got a perfect score. The only other perfect score, was one of my class mates who did Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
(During that class, only us two got to present because both songs are stupid long and she didn't have time to play them twice.)

One thing I've been hooked on is Iron Maiden's ability to transform a story or piece of history and make it come alive though music. For me the sense of skillfully placing the listener in the music as a virtual participant, for example Aces High, you almost feel like you are the fighter pilot. Steve Harris (Bass Guitarist) is the main architect behind this transformation, sadly that type of skillful song writing does not happen anymore. Another reason why I believe Iron Maiden will never fade, because when you hear it for the first time it's awesome and then hear it a month later, it's still awesome, if not more than before and I don't see any type of music doing that today.

Wonderful, insightful interpretation to one of the greatest metal songs ever. Your fresh take on this classic is definitely rock solid. Since the prisoner's crime is never explained, it could very well be that they were being hung for their religious views. The story of Mary Dyer and the Boston Martyrs is proof of this and actually fits your theory pretty well. Kudos to you.

I love what your guys are doing T. This song is set between the 16th through the 19th century. The prisoner is set to be executed, and as he is marched to gallows pole to be hung he is taking solace in the belief that the soul lives on and once he has died he will be able to see the truth. It was his faith that allowed him to face the tragic end to his life. Iron Maiden is a thinking man's band (non-p.c.) so check out Revelations with its GK Chesterton intro, the Flight of Icarus, and of course the Rime of the Ancient Mariner based upon the poem by Samuel Tyler Coleridge. Peace.

someone in a video like commented that the song is in great part about the emotions as much as the story or character :
he wrote that the song can be broken down in sections or emotional states ... i think he wrote 5 different emotions from, anger, sadness, denial and so on
tried to find it but could not ... but that makes a lot of sense.

Steve Harris -the bassplayer and songwriter who formed the band, said something like It's about a man waiting for his execution, and wherther or not his faith would leave him at that point, at the end of his life. For example: "As the guards march me out to the courtyard, somebody cries from a cell: God be with you! -If there's a god, why has he let me go?" As i walk my life drifts before me though the end is near i'm not sorry catch my soul it's willing to fly away. Mark my words believe my soul lives on don't worry now, that i am gone i've gone beyond to see the truth. When you know that your time is close at hand maybe then you'll begin to understand life down here is just a strange illusion"

To really dive into Iron Maiden, look into what the metal/hard rock was like in the mid 70's. Also, give prog rock bands a listen. Thin Liizzy, Allman Brothers, these bands pioneeered the twin guitar lead in the 70's. ELO and Jethro Tull were among the inspirational bands for IM. Go back to history and the music scene in England, in particular the growing metal scene (very much underground at the time). Listen to their early recordings in the light of what was happening around 1977-1980 (pop, new wave, punk and so on) . Listen to early Judas Priest and IM in the light of what was played on the radio back then. Now they both are hailed as masters but back then everything was much different.

But in hearing your wife go with the Jesus crucifixion angle that was a first for me and she made some good points to bare it out.

Not even modern metal is autotuned and push buttons and everything. Metal doesn't get the industry backing to the extent that pop does. The musicians have to have all that talent. There is pop metal, but I'm talking mostly about music outside of that. That's one of the beautiful things about metal. It's amazing on its own merits without the big label support. This is especially true of older metal, of course. With pop music you have song writers, choreographers and an army of support. With metal you got 4 guys and someone to work the controls in the studio.

When this song came out, there were no sub genres of metal yet. There was only heavy metal. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest were the epitome of straight up heavy metal. Amongst others. Later, subgenres formed and many took their influences from specific bands sounds and styles and those became subgenres. But at the time it was just heavy metal. But I'd say all power metal bands are heavily influenced by Iron Maiden. It's basically Iron Maiden played faster.

As a genuine time travelling headbanger from the '80s, what it meant to me was the hypocrisy of religion, preaching one thing, but then voting for the death penalty, voting to support Westmoreland's "body count warfare" in Vietnam, voting for the control of women's bodies, voting for the supression of thought and science.

I like this interpretation. Three metal songs come to mind that I'd be very curious to see a reaction for, as two deal with Jesus's crucifixion from his point of view, and the third is a question.
The first is Megadeth's "Looking Down the Cross." It deals with a dark turn if Jesus decided he didn't want to be a holy martyr and lets his human side corrupt his deific power. Albeit this was written before Dave Mustaine really had a grasp for song writing aside from riffs.
The second is power metal true. Iced Earth's "Melancholy (Holy Martyr)" which deals with what Jesus might have thought before his execution and to whether he will accept his fate.
The third is "The Rumor" by Savatage. Progressive metal at its best they are. Eventually Savatage turned into Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but I digress. The opening line states all, 'Jesus, what's the reason....'
I'd be ecstatic to see Savatage (my favorite band ever) or Iced Earth (almost ad underappreciated as Savatage). :- )
    Enjoy 😊

Hate to correct you but it was Christmas day 1975. The band went thru alot of line up changes with Steve Harris ( bass player) being the one constant member. When he finally got the right line up and record deal he thought benefited his vision, first album came out in 1980 with Dave Murray ( guitarist) and Steve being the only members to play on all their albums. The band is still touring and if rumors are true a new album will be released sometime in 2020

That's the problem with false teachers and false Christianity. It pushes more people away from the Lord then you can imagine. But if you hear the word taught with wisdom by someone who knows what they're talking about. There is no contradiction with common sense or science and the Bible.

Uhm... Maiden isn't the pioneer of a certain type of metal, back when they came out there was only Heavy Metal with no sub-genres. They didn't start splitting up the genre till much later when the hair metal bands like Poison, Quiet Riot and such came out to keep them separate from groups like Black Sabbath and such. These newer entries were labeled as Glam or Hair metal and to us early metal adopters this WAS NOT the true Metal we knew and loved. Truthfully these new bands were called posers and such by the older truer metal head and still are to this day. A lot of the metals early adopters came over from the old Punk Rock era, not that shit they call punk now think The Ramones, The sex Pistols and such, as there are similarities tween the movements with Metal not being quite as much of the fuck society message of Punk.

    • @TheAdventuresofTNT

The the song is called "Hallowed be thy name". He shouts the lords prayer at the end of the song, I think that's kind of religious. It didn't state anything about this person committing a crime, so how do you assume that they are a criminal? Funny thing about music interpretations.............
