First, Merry Christmas, Amanda! I hope you are doing well, my metal sister! That being said, Hallowed Be Thy Name is about a man on Death Row. He is getting ready to die by being hung. And on the walk to the gallows, he goes through the five stages of grief -- deciding to place his soul in the hands of God at the end, hence his exclamation: "Hallowed be Thy Name!" Hey Amanda. Great reaction, thanks👍🏻 Welcome to the Iron Maiden family. Maiden are metal royalty. The best metal music is always theatrical and dynamic. Maiden are one of those bands that tell the story through the music as much as the lyrics. Bruce is a great vocalist and the rest of the band are masters of their instruments. Hello, first timer here. Iron Maiden has a LOT of insight in their lyrics. If you want another song that touches the same theme (life and death) listen Heaven Can Wait, a dude who dies, looking his body down, asking himself if its a dream, grieving from the things he left undone... its a great piece of music
Bruce Dickinson, the vocalist of Iron Maiden is very theatrical, and is great at telling a story in the Lyrics of their songs. Dance of death is a great example of this, also live. Back in 2005-07 or so i think. Great performance They did do Phantom of the Opera as well, My first thought when you brought up the Phantom of the Opera, was you should check out Nightwish doing their version of it back when Tarja Turunen was the lead singer.
And check out Iron Maidens' version. I really want to thank you Amanda for reacting to this type of a music a lot. I’m 15 years old and i’m on my final year of high school, I get bullied every day and always have for being liking 80s heavy metal, I’ve never particularly fit in as it happens, there’s such a big stigma for us and it’s such an alienating feeling to live through, to have someone react to it and be so accepting of the lyrical nature and music itself is very relieving so thank you
Hello fellow lone wolf! I never fit in either, was very ostracized and often severely bullied. When someone bullies you and you don't listen to them, you take their power away and they are left bullying themselves.
Having been a suicide survivor myself, it is fantastic to be able to say it out loud here. Things can change! And you have just discovered the greatest band of all time. Been a fan since 1981.
Lead singer Bruce Dickinson is considered one of the best veteran vocalists in metal, or really in the genre period. He’s known for his ability to do tons of high, sustained belting. And as someone with a low voice, I know that continuous high notes like those are a real vocal workout. The band is a longtime heavy metal heavyweight.
Among Bruce's many talents (pilot, national standard fencer, master brewer, best on stage performer since Freddie Mercury) he is also a motivational speaker to the business community.
Iron Maiden helps the brain, just sayin', the more you hear the more you'll understand, as for "Phantom of the opera" yep Maiden have done a song by that title, please check it out, it was with their first singer (Paul) or there are live versions with this singer (Bruce), please check 'em out.
The rest of Maiden's debut album was pretty much on par with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene at the time in the late 70's/early 80's. "Phantom of the Opera", though, was a song that certainly separated them from the rest of the pack, and by quite a large margin. By the time Killers (1981) and The Number of the Beast (1982), they were instant classics, but primarily because of the foundation laid by "Phantom of the Opera" ..... an otherworldly song by a band of the same otherworldly stature.
Iron Maiden actually HAS a song called "Phantom of the Opera" LOL. You nailed it! (That song has a different singer who infuses a grittier feel than ones like this that feature the operatic vocals of Bruce Dickinson, but it's still great stuff. The song was from some of their earliest material. Paul Di'Anno was their original singer.)
I smile every time someone new hears this song for the first time. This is normally reactors introduction to Iron Maiden and it is the perfect song to show off the power of the band. My mental health journey is long and still ongoing. Even though I never attempted suicide I've thought about how to do it many times. Looking back I think I had undiagnosed depression and anxiety since junior high. I was very shy and introverted that I didn't participate in a lot of things. I was teased and bullied and it was metal music that got me through I truly believe. It's always been my outlet for rage. My dad was hospitalized around that time for depression so that could've been a trigger. I went in the military and it got worse at first but then it got much better as I gained confidence and made friends. Shortly after I left though my dad passed. I was twenty four. My mom was in her sixties by then. I did everything to help her out and even though I was having those thoughts again I knew I had to keep going for her. She lived until almost ninety so I'm much older now. After she passed though I was back why do I stick around? I love the rest of my family and know the pain it would bring them so I hold on still. Now I've been having a lot of medical problems, afib in my heart, early stage cancer and other more minor things. I've been hospitalized three times in as many years and I just got out again just a few weeks ago. This time brought me to the brink. There were a couple of nights a couldn't sleep or get any rest and my mental health suffered big time. The day they got me out I had a full blown panic attack and wanted to die. There was one nurse who went way beyond just her job and got me through and I'll be forever grateful to her. I'm still having issues since then and now the doctors are talking about surgeries to fix things that can be fixed. That on top so many regrets of bad decisions I've mad in life keeps me close to the edge all the time. I have mind numbing headaches and pain from arthritis that keeps awake many nights. I plan to seek out a therapists again soon. I had one about a decade ago but we became friends and ended up talking about our mutual love of heavy metal than ever taking about my deep seated demons. People say you have to go through all that to end up where you are now. I have a great job but that's about it. I have one real friend and work mates who I can't wait to get back and see after the weekend. Work is my anchor and weekends are to much time in my own head.
It's inspiring to see how music, particularly heavy metal, has been a powerful outlet for you throughout the years. The way you describe the impact of Iron Maiden's music, especially during your challenging times, highlights the therapeutic and transformative nature of music. Your dedication to your family and the love you have for them is a testament to your resilience. It's encouraging to hear that you're considering seeking therapy again. Therapy can be a valuable tool in addressing deep-seated issues and providing coping mechanisms for the challenges you're facing. It's important to find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and supported, and one who can help guide you through your journey. Remember that reaching out to friends, like your workmates, and sharing your thoughts and feelings can also be beneficial. Having a strong anchor like your job can provide stability, but it's crucial to balance it with activities that bring you joy and fulfillment during weekends. As you navigate through medical issues and contemplate surgeries, I hope you find the strength to face each challenge with resilience. Taking steps to address your mental health, exploring therapy, and continuing to connect with those who support you are important aspects of your ongoing journey. If you ever feel overwhelmed, don't hesitate to reach out to me and the community as well. You're not alone in this journey, and there are people who care about you.
Pretty old metalhead here. I've been into Maiden for over 35 years. It's so amazing seeing someone from your age group and your background get into that song the way you did. Welcome to our club, my dear 😉 The way you just kinda got carried away and even started thrashing a little bit was so cool. Ok, here's what you need to do next. Metal, especially bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, megadeth, etc, are way better live than any other way to experience it. I can tell you would LOVE it. It's hard to explain, but the true metal "feeling" is more felt than heard. Being right there, you have all of that in front of your eyes, the music the crowd and the whole vibe just drives right through you. And in regards to mental health,,, something about is kinda healing. The whole place is a bit on the dangerous side, especially in the pit. But it makes you feel so alive. nowhere will you be safer or more looked after than with your new family in the pit 🤘 If you haven't yet, Cemetery Gates from Pantera would be awesome to see you do! Sorry I rambled, Loved your video and God bless!
I am going through a hard time right now and 2023 has most probably been the worst year in my life...Thank you for your thoughts in the end of this video.
Congratulations, you’ve discovered Metal. More importantly discovered Iron Maiden. Master story tellers, brilliant lyrics, magic chord structures, concept cover art (Eddy is the man!), and just really damn good music. Iron Maiden has been making “metal heads” since 1978, and numbers are in the billions. Almost every song in their near FIFTY year career has something to give. You can literally listen for hours, never be bored and possibly learn something. Eddy welcomes you to the family, because everyone is welcome! Up the Irons!!!!!
For sure one of their better songs that protrays a story better is Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and as for a metal version of Phantom Nightwish did one and the best one for that song is from their End of an Era show. In other videos especially The Trooper you'll see more of Bruce Dickinson (Singer) running around like a mad man.
Facing death is a common theme in many Iron Maiden songs. While this song is 40 years old, the group are still going strong - their latest record from 2021 has some of their strongest songs in years.
@@MentalAmanda The song Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden is EPIC! I'm only familiar with their 80's output but SO many bangers! Worth going down that rabbit hole!
You did good picking up things in the song Amanda. The music with the ticking clock and the lyrical content. I took the lyrics to show him going through the 5 stages of grief. This is one of Maiden's most popular songs and Bruce Dickinson in his prime. I've been listening to Iron Maiden since the early 1980's. Maiden does have a song Phantom of the Opera. Best version IMO is live at the Rainbow, with different singer.
I grew up listening to metal and Maiden were the first band I ever saw live back in 1988 when I was 15. They always put on an amazing show. My music taste has expanded to all kinds of different genres over the years and now at 50 years old, this is still not only (in my opinion of course) not only one of the best Maiden songs, but one of the best heavy metal songs ever written. It has so much going on. It has everything you need from a metal song. Drama, tension, storytelling, a slow and spine tingling build up, a superb guitar solo, incredible and powerful vocals. I have listened to this song what must be thousands of times over the last 40 years since I first got into Maiden as a kid. It was my big sister who introduced me to them and will always remind me of her. Sadly my family lost my big sister earlier this year to cancer. I miss her terribly, but will always have my memories of her getting me into rock and metal as a child.
Heavy metal was my bedrock as a troubled kid with horrendous self image issues. I always found solace in the lyrics, knowing I wasn’t alone in feeling the pain of loneliness and the general bitterness of life. The music was a counter to all of the negativity, giving energy along with sense of belonging to a group of other “outcasts”. I’m 52 now and heavy metal is still my source of peace.
I asked for a skateboard for Christmas. Skating has helped with my mental health in the past. My Schizophrenia has been extra tough the last year. I'm going to start after the holidays. I'll get a session in every day. I'm really hoping that will help. Best of luck to everyone who reads this!! Happy holidays!
Growing up, I had heard metal before with Metalica, Black Sabbath, etc. It wasn't until I heard Iron Maiden for the first time that I really got a feel for what metal can really do. I liked metal and rock before, but Iron Maiden made me really feel the music in a way I didn't know was possible. Iron Maiden does something the other metal bands just don't. Even the instrumental parts of their songs tell a story. Kudos for giving them a listen!
Good reaction to one of the greatest metal-songs. Bruce Dickinson is one of the best singers of our time. Nightwish has done even a couple metal versions of Phantom of the opera. You should react to them. Greetings from Finland. Take care.
Iron Maiden has tons of existential lyrics in their songs. They frequently reflect on life, death, ultimate realities, etc. You will have much to comment on as you research their catalogue.
For the full story songs, look up Maiden playing Phantom of the opera or Rhyme of the ancient mariner. Amazing how they can tell a story with amazing music
Iron Maiden has been around for almost 50 years, with a fairly consistent lineup, and is still touring today. They're absolute legends, who love putting on a great show and playing great music together.
Live from 1982 and 40 years later is this Song still in the Liveset = Heavy Metal is the Best Music on this Planet ! My start as a Metalhead was 1980 with 13 , today I'm 56 years old and still long hair like Bruce in 1982
Iron Maiden is the GREATEST(live;)BAND in the world, now and forever🤘 Best rabbit hole known😜 You should listen to "wasted years" by Iron Maiden,...you(we) are living in your(our) golden years👏 Up the mighty Irons!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
This is a great example of why Metal Heads are so passionate about their metal bands and music. They love them til the end and beyond. Maiden still has a huge following and all of their original followers/ fans. It just does something to your soul
I’m so impressed you got the vibe of Iron Maiden right away when you talked about their being the perfect band for a metal version of Phantom of the Opera! As others have pointed out, they did a song called Phantom of the Opera on their self-titled debut album from 1980. They are the storytellers of yore set against the heaviest metal backdrop. Thanks for being so “‘N Sync” with Maiden, and for that, I heartily subscribe!
There is a group I think you would be perfect to hear. They are called Hilung the song I’d say try first is Anoana. My reason for saying this is I personally struggle with complex PTSD severe anxiety and depression and stress related issues and often il use music to help guide how my mind is making me feel to a more functional path. This group and this song in particular is something primeval and I’m not the first person to say it. It’s like something we have all lost is triggered in the depths of our minds by this music. And I’ve never come away from listening to them without feeling at least a little more positive. It’s not the typical music I see you have reached to but I think it’s something that you potentially need to. 🤙🏻
Iron Maiden are one of those bands that I would consider to be one of the most accessible metal bands. They are really upbeat, and in my humble opinion, wholesome.
When you consider that from the time this live performance was recorded, and the concert played “yesterday” the only change in the live sound is the addition of a third “harmonic” guitar track
I have missed your channel somehow, UA-cam unsubscribe me I'm not sure how that happened but it happened for a lot of people I watch so, good to see you and hear you again, you have an awesome channel!
In the lyrics he says: When you know that your time is close at hand Maybe then you'll begin to understand Life down here is just a strange illusion". He does not say "life down there". He just begins to question life but He has not gone to the other side to tell us yet.
Great reaction! One thing I will say first is, he wasn’t innocent. He did the crime. He even says he’s not sorry. Another great song that deals with anxiety is Fear of the Dark. And I also recommend always doing a live performance of Maiden. I think they actually sound better live!
Have you heard Iron Maiden's song "Phantom Of The Opera"? It was off their second album with their original singer, but it was based on the play. It is considered an Iron Maiden classic.
It's actually the last song on the first album Iron Maiden. The second album is Killers. And it's based on the old movie, which is the inspiration for MANY Maiden songs.👍
We don't know if the prisoner is innocent or guilty. But imagine contemplating your life, knowing exactly when your death is coming! In this song the final five stages of grief run through this person: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance ... *Awesome lyrics!* 🤘
Few things, first, merry Christmas, great to see you really enjoying this one Iron Maiden we're, and still are, arguably the best live band there is, I've seen some close but nobody better. If you want to hear "Phantom" live and metal, check out Nightwish with Tarja, jaw dropping performance of the Lloyd Webber song from the musical, Tara's voice is immense and pure operatic power
Probably already mentioned, but Iron Maiden _did_ perform a song _Phantom of the Opera_ - however it was their own composition, based on Gaston Leroux's original 1909 novel, and appeared on their first album in 1980, six years _before_ Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.
It's funny you should mention a metal Phantom of the Opera. About seven years before Andrew Lloyd-Webber's musical of that name, Iron Maiden wrote and recorded a song named Phantom of the Opera. However, if you're thinking of a metal version of the song from Lloyd-Webber's musical, look to Nightwish, who recorded a fantastic cover of it in the early noughties.
Great reaction and you understood the song perfectly. BTW, Iron Maiden has a song called, "Phantom of the Opera". Another great song of many. It doesn't matter what song you pick from them. They always have deep meaning and you learn lots of history, too. Bruce, the singer, is very theatrical and it IS almost like going to an opera.
I love how Bruce captures everything from the low to the madness of thought someone waiting for execution must feel. The music accompanies his manic moments perfectly!! You should give Judas Priest Beyond the realms of death a listen. Keep up the great reviews and helping folks!!
As a huge Maiden fan since the mid 80's, I loved your reaction. Also, I've struggled with suicidal thoughts since my youth but this band and their messages have literally gotten me through many of my darkest days. Iron Maiden are all about hope and learning from the past in order to continue moving forward... it's probably been mentioned here but they do have a tune called Phantom of the Opera. They indeed are extremely theatrical and Bruce could 100% line up Broadway for miles and mile BUT he's too much of a renaissance man to have time for that lol you MUST react to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (based on a poem from the 1700's.... anyway, cheers and keep on keeping on
At the end of time there should be a list of songs that defined music, this should be one of them. And yes Phantom of the Opera - by Iron Maiden! Go listen to it.
Maiden is the ultimate jam band. Good times. A lot of their songs are stories, poems, legends, etc. from the past. These guys are much deeper than most folks think. 🤟😎 *btw - Bruce raises his arm(s) to expand his chest cavity, thereby expanding his air capacity, so that he has an easier time sustaining those super long belts and notes.
Iron Maiden has a song called The Phantom of the opera. Written at least 6 years before the musical. One of their most theatrical songs you should tjek out is Dance of death. I recomend live Envivo
Love you sis, good to see you enjoy the finest artists, as always! Later I will get on a real keyboard to tell you about this epic emotional morning. Sometimes one moment...
Great reaction Amanda. And yes, speaking of Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden does have a song called Phantom of the Opera, which isn't the same Andrew Lloyd Webber PotO, it is quite good. For a more traditional version, go back to Nightwish and check out their Official Live version with their original singer Tarja.
Iron Maiden actually has a song call 'Phantom of the Opera'. No doubt, this is a very theatrical band. They have also done songs about ancient mythology and even from classic literature.
If you're looking for something uplifting, I recommend Helloween - Keeper of the seven Keys Part II. Whenever I listen to this album, I feel better. There are funny/silly songs like Rise and Fall, yet even the more serious songs like Eagle fly free or I want out are uplifting. And the, there is the epiy Keeper of the seven Keys. (There is alos a cool live version from the Pumpkins United Tour.)
There is a somewhat more obscure band called Unto Others. Would love to see your reaction to a few songs on their album Mana but specifically to a song called Dont waste your time...
Speaking of Phantom Of The Opera: Iron Maiden's debut album has the very song! But a different song written by Maiden and not related to the song from the musical. It is absolute classic Iron Maiden and a must listen. BTW, their first two albums had a different singer called Paul Di'Anno.
I'm so glad you delved into masters of rock, Iron Maiden. I suggested live performances from Metallica and Queensryche as well. Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo) is a song of hope, perfect for the message you seem to be spreading. Have a great day!

Iron Maiden helps the brain, just sayin', the more you hear the more you'll understand, as for "Phantom of the opera" yep Maiden have done a song by that title, please check it out, it was with their first singer (Paul) or there are live versions with this singer (Bruce), please check 'em out.
live at ullevi in 2005 is the best live version with Bruce.... that entire show was their old hits and was amazing start to finish
I recommend the Bruce version from 1984 "Live After Death" album...no video, sadly.
There are live versions with Bruce. And they're much better than the studio version too.
Amazing how each band member plays in sync. Fucking Bruce’s vocals are insane !
Yeah, 2023 was quite the dumpster fire. I'm ready for a better year ahead!
Iron Maiden formed on Christmas day 1975, but yes, you are correct👏
Speaking of: Merry Christmas 🎅🤶
For sure one of their better songs that protrays a story better is Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and as for a metal version of Phantom Nightwish did one and the best one for that song is from their End of an Era show. In other videos especially The Trooper you'll see more of Bruce Dickinson (Singer) running around like a mad man.
"The best way out, is through"....well said. I love it. Truer words have never been spoken. Push forward, always push forward
Facing death is a common theme in many Iron Maiden songs. While this song is 40 years old, the group are still going strong - their latest record from 2021 has some of their strongest songs in years.
Iron maiden did do phantom of the opera.its a very cool song
Bwahaha! That's nuts!
@@MentalAmanda The song Phantom of the Opera by Iron Maiden is EPIC! I'm only familiar with their 80's output but SO many bangers! Worth going down that rabbit hole!
And they wrote it well before Lloyd Webber did his musical version of the story.
@@MentalAmanda they also did rhyme of the ancient Mariner
Funny you mention Phantom of the opera, that's a song off of their first album. Should deffo check that one out too
Good reaction to one of the greatest metal-songs.
Thank you for existing! 😊
My start as a Metalhead was 1980 with 13 , today I'm 56 years old and still long hair like Bruce in 1982
Its truly an experience to experience the worlds greatest band for the first time.
It's funny that you mention phantom of the Opera because iron maiden did a version of that in their first album. You should check it out
Iron Maiden is the GREATEST(live;)BAND in the world, now and forever🤘
Best rabbit hole known😜
You should listen to "wasted years" by Iron Maiden,...you(we) are living in your(our) golden years👏
Up the mighty Irons!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
The first iteration of Iron Maiden recorded Phantom Of The Opera for their eponymous first album.
In fact Maiden has a song called 'The Phantom of the Opera'. I recommend it to you!
I see what you did there 💖
And Bruce “Air Raid Siren” Dickenson also pilots the band’s Jumbo Jet between cities. That’s rock and roll.
A terrific reaction. Way to go for being open to new music.
Hello from Oklahoma. Iron maiden is one of the greats of metal.
Every time this song is played an angel gets his/her wings! (I'm sure that there was a phrase in an old film that said something like this! 🙂)
Iron Maiden is the greatest metal band ever in time and space. 'Nuff said!
I’ve always loved watching your reactions, such positive energy no matter what is going on in life, keep up the positive vibes and be safe
I have missed your channel somehow, UA-cam unsubscribe me I'm not sure how that happened but it happened for a lot of people I watch so, good to see you and hear you again, you have an awesome channel!
In the lyrics he says:
When you know that your time is close at hand Maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down here is just a strange illusion". He does not say "life down there". He just begins to question life but He has not gone to the other side to tell us yet.
Bands like Iron Maiden are one of the many reasons my childhood was awesome!!!
This is a fantastic performance from 1982. The singer Bruce is a metal legend ! xx
Great reaction! One thing I will say first is, he wasn’t innocent. He did the crime. He even says he’s not sorry. Another great song that deals with anxiety is Fear of the Dark. And I also recommend always doing a live performance of Maiden. I think they actually sound better live!
I highly recommend you go to the 2024 Maiden tour if you can.
I can’t wait for the show in NJ in November.
Every Maiden live show is phenomenal.
Fight the good fight by Triumph live in Halifax 1984? Writing a song about your auntie dealing with cancer. It was an emotional experience for me.
No! But that explains why I had the vibe maybe!
We don't know if the prisoner is innocent or guilty. But imagine contemplating your life, knowing exactly when your death is coming! In this song the final five stages of grief run through this person: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance ... *Awesome lyrics!* 🤘
AMANDA. I missed your videos. I hope you're doing fine.
I'm doing fine, and I finished school. You really help. Your videos help.
Proud of you!
Bruce is a trained Opera singer...and pilot....And a world class fencer. So there we are
Few things, first, merry Christmas, great to see you really enjoying this one
Iron Maiden we're, and still are, arguably the best live band there is, I've seen some close but nobody better.
Hi from Brazil. :D I'm a fan of Iron Maiden I've been listening the band for many years and I really liked your reaction video. :D
If you want to hear a history lesson on the form of a song try their song Alexander The Great.
I love how Bruce captures everything from the low to the madness of thought someone waiting for execution must feel. The music accompanies his manic moments perfectly!! You should give Judas Priest Beyond the realms of death a listen. Keep up the great reviews and helping folks!!
I love that your eyes dart about taking every morsel of info from the video
I was wondering if that song would trigger something negative in you, because it's about the death but I'm glad it didn't.
Great reaction Gorgeous Amanda
*btw - Bruce raises his arm(s) to expand his chest cavity, thereby expanding his air capacity, so that he has an easier time sustaining those super long belts and notes.
Iron Maiden has a song called The Phantom of the opera. Written at least 6 years before the musical. One of their most theatrical songs you should tjek out is Dance of death. I recomend live Envivo
I always loved this song, but Amanda you made it so much fun. I love your reactions❤
"Youl'll begin to understand life down here is just a strange illusion"...deep.
Iron Maiden .....is the standard. All bands must be held to highest!!¡
Bruce "Foghorn" Dickinson isn't nicknamed Foghorn without reason. This also still applies AFTER he beat Throat Cancer as well (after this vid).
1982. Pure greatness. Maiden are on this 57 year old headbangers Mt. Rushmore of Metal.
Merry Christmas 🎅 🤶 to you all🤗
I'm so glad you delved into masters of rock, Iron Maiden. I suggested live performances from Metallica and Queensryche as well. Take Hold of the Flame (live in Tokyo) is a song of hope, perfect for the message you seem to be spreading. Have a great day!
Queensryche "take hold of the flame" in Tokyo is really great. Geoff Tate has an amazing and theatrical voice. He was vocally trained in opera
For storytelling you can't beat Rime of the Ancient Mariner, one of the greatest songs by Iron Maiden.
Welcome to the Maiden family! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Funny thing is maiden have a song called phantom of the opera. It's on their first album. Different singer. Incredible song
Dance Of Death the En Vivo version is one of Bruces most over the top theatrical performances, its brilliant 🤘🏻🙌🏻
I quite comfortably put this as the greatest heavy metal song ever written.
