I just bought the sp minnow and I have a nine foot ugly stick with a Shimano Sierra 4000 reel with 20 lb braid. Is my line and reel to small and light for this lure.

If the fish can run without to much areas that can cut the line you can use 30Ibs test. If not I would use 50Ibs test.

So should I still use the lure of wait until I get heavier line.

No you can still use the 20IBs main line I would just beef up the Mono leader to 30Ilbs or so. Just have to baby the fish a lot more and hope the fish don't break the main line. You can catch big fish with small line but that's where skills come into place. Go by feel and you'll know when to upgrade.

Thanks Dan. Good tip. We used to use the camera film canister for palu but this is nice.

Aloha island hooking, I'm starting to use lures on the big island. Any suggestions on lures to catch Omilus? Mahalo

Alexis Carpio I would start with scroungers to get the feel of things and get into bigger lures later like the sp minnow or mark whites. Good luck.

Campania and Big Island Baits have good lures that you could use. Mark Whites, Daiwa sp Minnows, Skubus Lures, Kaku Lures, Orca Lures and Bait 08 for now.

if you don't want the palu to come out too fast, use a cheese cloth covering with some duct tape...
