When i was in elementary school, in 4th grade our english teacher brough in her entire american girl doll collection, and we each got assigned a doll, and we had to read all 6 of her books, and do a huge report on the doll and the era she lived in. Mine was Josafina Montoya. Even though i had no intrest in the doll itself i actually really enjoyed reading the books. the other boys in my class hated this little exercise but i always thought it was interesting.
@@lainiwakura1776 All people are different and that assumption is sexist. There were assignments I used to do in school that I didn’t like but not everyone likes everything and they have to do it. That’s just how school works. I bet not every little girl liked it either.

58:47 My thing with the face molds is there are so many people on Earth that someone is bound to look like a certain combination on a doll. I’m a biracial person, and even though I’m darker-skinned I look absolutely nothing like Addie or Sonali (the most common faces used for Black dolls). Recently, they made a darker skinned doll with Corrine’s face mold (an East Asian face). I was finally able to see myself in an American Girl doll.
@@floangel5422 I found that most dolls didn't look similar to me growing up. As an African-American with European ancestry, it broke my heart to not "see myself" in these popular doll brands at the time. ☹️ The black American Girl dolls I grew up with: Cecile, Addy, and Melody didn't favor me feature-wise for the most part. The two things I had in common out of all of them were with Addy (her hair and dark brown eyes). However, I found that Kanani and Rebecca shared far more similar features as opposed to the dolls that were-ideally-meant to represent me.
Samantha always was my favorite american girl because the books I got seriously into, I still have many of them. I wanted a doll of her so badly, but my family couldn't swing it financially.
i loved the american girl books but i 100% understand the view on a lot of them being boring! my faves were all the ones where something “fucked up” happened like the samanthas dead parent voyage, kirstens friend dying on the boat to america, pretty much all of addys books, etc. i was obsessed w/ nellies story as an irish american.
Samantha was my favorite of the original dolls but I think it’s solely because of her giant hair bows. As a kid my favorite Sailor Moon character was Sailor Venus, who had similar hair to Samantha but blonde, and a giant hair bow. I also had a best friend named Samantha. I was lucky enough to have Samantha as a kid, and I remember when Nellie got her own doll and books! Truly deserved I say.
my grandparents got a Samantha for me when i was little, because she looked a little like me and played piano like me. i had her little bed and some tea set and a piano, as well as some other clothes and books. she is very special to me, and the time period/historical context she’s in helped open my eyes to a lot of things and helped me become more engaged in politics, social justice, etc.
I didn't own a Samantha doll, but I so badly wanted her ice cream parlor! I remember asking my mother for it in 2014/2015. After my mom saw the retail price ($300) for the parlor, she looked at me, and walked away. 😭
I'm not even a fan of the American girl doll brand but you make any subject you talk about in your videos endearingly engaging, that I'll listen to it while i draw
Honestly it's cool that the doll gets patterns, because you can get several dresses with one pattern in different colors, which means that you can make a whole wardrobe completely custom to both your tastes or your doll. You could even get the pattern for other doll dresses you like for whatever doll you have, made custom in color and fabric
I’m Canadian and always wanted an American girl doll but they were too expensive especially with the conversion rate. I was gifted the Canadian version of American girl dolls called newberry dolls but none of them were historical and I was undiagnosed autistic with a special interest in history, so I was a bit disappointed but still happy but learning the lore is weirdly healing… (please do more i loved this)
I never heard of Newberry dolls; I'll have to look them up. What about Maplelea dolls? I have and love Saila because I'm interested in the Inuit culture and the whole Northwest Territories and Leonie. I live only 200 miles from Quebec. She also plays hockey, which is my favourite Sport, I'm obsessed with it.
first of all, i love the commitment to the samantha-inspired outfit. second of all, this would be quite frankly the most epic series of all time. im currently listening to this like it’s a podcast while filing at work
I began my lifelong hobby of collecting American Girl dolls and merchandise when I was 11 (now I'm 28). I have many books, magazines (ceased production in 2019), and a handful of dolls. I have encyclopedias about the dolls too, but I have yet to read about all of them. As much of an enthusiast I am for the brand, I also consider myself a fraud because I don't know much about it due to myself having no time to sit and read through all of the history and facts, so you're not alone!
Great video Samantha really was a iconic character that I must say really helped the brand recognition through the years are your next videos like this gonna be about felicity and Josefina since you already have them just wondering but Addy Walker needs a video cause girl is all our American girl queen also I died in your first video when you said “Now I have a child owning slave on my book shelf” definitely one of your best one liners
My parents scoffed at American Girl prices but one fateful day, at a garage sale, my older sister discovered a Samantha doll in a bin of toys and my grandmother let her get it. We didn’t know who she was until later, but the signature teeth told us all we needed to know. Poor thing was nude though, so we got some Build-A-Bear clothes on her when we got her home😂
I had an OG Samantha and used to DEVOUR the six book series for each historic doll. This video brought back so many good memories. Side note, that was like the best segways to a sponsor that I have heard. I was like oooh cool history on perfume in that era, and then it was awe she's passionate about perfumes that's cool and then BAM, bamboozled into a sponsor, it was perfect and seamless 😂
super fun and interesting!! i only ever read samantha's books (and felicity's first one) but i had all the movies and samantha was my absolute favorite!! seeing those illustrations onscreen brought back so many happy memories :)
I didn’t know there were patterns but that’s really sweet because it makes the collection more accessible to kids at a lower income who could probably only afford the single doll. My childhood dolls were Kaya and Kirsten but I had all the books. Books were a lot easier to convince my mom to buy. My favorite book series was Josephina’s. I wanted to live in her house so bad. They’re such a fun toy line and I’m glad they’re still a thing.
Came for the discussion of my favorite American Girl doll, was very pleasantly surprised by the brief fragrance tangent. I was grinning ear to ear when you mentioned you had a document detailing your adventures in perfumery, as I have one myself, alongside ones for general cosmetics and skincare. It makes keeping track of what I like and what I don't very simple. On top of that, my family and I have a plethora of allergies scattered around the four of us, so keeping track of what works and what doesn't is VERY important to me. It would be a disaster if I found something I liked and brought home, only to then have my brother gain a rash from close proximity, or scent, or taste. It's tricky, but we need to be careful.
I was obsessed with Samantha as a kid after reading her story but I never owned the doll. Surprise surprise now I’m super interested in the Progressive/Edwardian era of history and drool over the fashion

The outfits, accessories, furniture, and stories to understand the girl inner thoughts really brings you in their world makes you sad since they decided to focus on the modern dolls and make them like every other doll line but at least now we're getting videos like this and others dissecting what the brand once was and stand for. Maybe you could do rankings of the historical girls outfits that they all share across the board like a video were you rank all the girls Meet Outfits (non Meat Outfits🥩) and then a video ranking the School, Holiday, Birthday, Summer, Winter, and sleepwear outfits from the books since their the main outfits in their collections they can be shorter videos that don't have to be more than an hour so they can put in between your longer videos but let say if a girl have more than one outfit that themed to it like if a girl have 3 Holiday dresses or if a girl have more than one Winter coat or another set of pajamas since American girl did make multiple themed outfits then include them in the ranking and also include beforever to see how they pair in comparison that would be a great idea and I would like to hear your opinion
