    Never quite understood why movies need to "reflect the world we live in", if they're set in a world we don't!

    • @DrDolan2000
      @DrDolan2000 Рік тому

      Exactly. It's a FANTASY world. Do these people know what a fantasy is?
      Fuck it; I already know the answer to that
      But if a fictional world is going to reflect ours, leave LotR out of it. And don't portray these fools as the heroes because they're not

    • @arnthedragonborn8306
      @arnthedragonborn8306 Рік тому +132

      They don't need to, that's exactly the point. It's just another phrase used to gaslight people into believing that what they are watching is a good movie/series and not a horrible piece of media just regurgitated in order to further an agenda. Ideally the movies would reflect the source material being either historical or fantastic in nature, deviating from it perhaps just slightly in order to create a better story flow (look at LOTR and how Peter Jackson cut out a few parts or slightly changed others to create a better narrative flow for example).

    • @arnthedragonborn8306
      @arnthedragonborn8306 Рік тому +37

      @@andieallison6792 Just that movies don't need to reflect the world we live in, since they are movies (aka works of art which are at most based on our world but not meant to replicate it).
      And that usually when this justification is used for a movie, it just means a group wanted to make yet another movie about "inclusivity" (so as not to seem racist or sexist, they have to have a black person or asian person, replace a male charater with a female one etc. not caring that them doing that only shows the exact opposite, that only skin color or your sex matters for if it didn't you would just cast the best actor for the job not caring about their sex or skin color).
      That's why movies don't need to "reflect the world we live in" and that when you see this phrase you should expect another horrible movie caring only about those details mentioned above rather than a good story or compelling characters or a moral lesson to be had.
      Have a beautiful day!

    I was taken aback when I saw Top Gun Maverick in the theater and saw the special message from Tom Cruise at the beginning. He actually thanked fans for coming out to the theater to support his movie. I can't remember the last time a Hollywood actor actually thanked the public. I'll bet Tom Cruise is pretty clicked on with the current Hollywood climate. Being a scientologist, who are severly anti-gay he and the rest of the woke zealots who now run Hollywood have distanced themselves from each other. Hell, they even shit on Chris Pratt because he's a Christian but despite doing or saying nothing controversial or antagonistic.
      I'll bet Tom is seeing the writing on the wall and is taking advantage of that opportunity. And I hope he does more of it.

      That's mainly because Ripley was a well written character that happened to be a woman.
      Not the godawful "strong female character" we know today.
      I think I read some trivia that said that the script didn't specify Ripley's gender and when Sigourney auditioned, they thought she was right for the part.
      So Ripley became Ellen Ripley. A woman.

    The best counter example of the “fans are toxic and hate women and POCs” argument is Rogue One, which coincidentally released the same year as the Ghostbusters reboot. Rogue One is nearly universally loved by Star Wars fans, who generally agree that it’s the best thing Disney has done with Star Wars. This, despite having a female lead, her team which consists solely of POCs, her black mentor, and virtually every villain being a white male. Evidently fans really are more concerned with a good story than the makeup of the characters, and will eagerly support well-written females and POCs.

      Immersion in a good film does that, not fan-baiting.
      Fan-baiting does the opposite. It makes fans nitpick and be hostile cos they’re going in expecting to be patronised, lectured, shamed, and disappointed.
      Hostile fan-baiting style marketing makes audiences overly critical to the point that they end up second guessing every POC or woman as a tokenised diversity hire instead of a legit casting.
      We wanna give them the benefit of the doubt that it’s not tokenisation but Hollywood is now so cynical, hateful of fandom and devoid of creativity that it’s become impossible to look past race/gender-swapped characters

      It's all being done on purpose. It's called "fan-baiting". It's a marketing technique designed to generate artificial controversy, garner publicity, and explain away negative reviews by playing the victim and gaslighting the reviewers as being bigots. This way, the movie or show gets its own victim status and is praised by all the virtue signalers and activists as being "stunning and brave" regardless of how bad the intrinsic artistic content really is.

    A very good example of this is Prey. Generally, audience response was very positive, and even fans of The Predator said it was a good film, even if it had little to do with The Predator. However, articles were written and Twitters posted about how toxic fans hated the movie. Except, they didn't. This proves that Fanbaiting is not a reaction to fan response but a deliberate marketing ploy. They assumed fans would hate the movie, and they were mostly wrong.

      Okay soo... I've kinda become a conspiracy theorist about this shit at this point. Like no joke, I don't think projects like Rings of Power makes any money from bad publicity. I'm actually thinking that the corruption and inhumane toxicity of our political landscape is beginning to compromise our media. Well no shit right? But seriously... What if go woke go broke wasn't true. What if these projects were privately funded in the first place? Hear me out...
      So our political landscape is rife with corruption. Statistics from activists groups and government agencies alike intentionally show a small part of the full picture about a particular issue, but just enough to the extent that the blame could be directed in a place where it objectively doesn't belong. Prejudice in America for example is definitely a problem, but I personally don't really think it's as much an issue as our politicians make it out to be. For the sake of argument, let's say that social injustice in western society is across the board the lowest it has ever been. So then, how do you justify your social justice program? Well... you go on a witch hunt. You go find every single person who has ever said or done anything even remotely hinting at their slightly skewed perception of another oppressed group and bring it into the public eye and slander them for it. That at least explains political correctness. But there's more...
      So then let's say maybe that isn't effective enough or maybe you want to do more to prove that racism exists. The next step would be to go out of your way to force it out of people by fabricating it. You take beloved movies that were created in a northern European fantasy setting and give it a blm face lift while simultaneously inserting a disproportionate amount of other oppressed groups into the main cast until the property is so far away from what you would expect from a Lord of the Rings film that you are actually kind of frustrated about it. People give it dislikes and angry comments on social media and *bam. You have 'racism', 'sexism', 'homophobia', 'transphobia', 'misogyny'... and everything you would need to justify your social justice programs.
      But I'm not sure. Maybe I'm completely wrong about this, but I really do think there's a lot of money backing these terrible decisions. It makes sense from a broad scope perspective. It fits right in with the pure definition of victimhood narcissism. And as long as you are getting money from people who are willing to help with your cause, why not continue? Especially if it financially sustains you.

We no longer have stories being written by people who have struggled, worked hard, started business, studied history, fought in a war, etc. I don't think many of them even understand what a healthy relationship (friendship, family, marriage) looks like. It's very apparent because they just don't seem to understand human nature.

    So why is it that she acts like a human? Why does she behave as though she is barely 20?
    The truth of the matter is that far too many writers are incapable of imagining someone who doesn’t behave that way, they lack the world view and depth of experience to portray anything outside of how they percieve the world around them, and the world around them is sadly some L.A. writers college designed to pump out as many mediocre writers as possible to feed the great media beast.

    You know something that really proves what Drinker is saying? Cobra Kai. It has a massively diverse cast of empowering characters, and both old-time fans and newcomers to the franchise adore it. Why? It doesn't attack fans. It doesn't put down the original cast and still holds them in reverence, even while letting them share the spotlight on equal terms with the new cast. It respects its new actors to treat them as characters instead of pieces of colored meat on a deli counter. And most important of all it's written well. And so far it's made it to Season 5, ran for four years, has been renewed for a sixth season, had zero controversy, has been nominated for two dozen awards, and boasts a 95 critic / 92 audience on Rotten Tomatoes with no signs of slowing down. Shows like Star Wars and 2016 Ghostbusters could have been as beloved by fans as Cobra Kai had they simply had enough faith in their new characters to put them on equal ground with the old cast and make something for their fans as well as newcomers to the series.

    • @SynsityGW

      I mean just look at the difference in reception between House of the Dragon and Rings of Power. On the surface, they are extremely similar. Two beloved fantasy worlds, given a prequel series, both race bended in ridiculously anti-source material ways, both focused on powerful, yet pure and amazing women. They aired at roughly the same time, one received a great deal of praise from fans and critics alike, another was lambasted for being a piece of garbage by anyone who doesn't have a vested financial interest in praising their overlords. People will look the other way on shitting on the source material for the sake of diversity (the Velaryons being black is utterly ridiculous as Targaryens are literally obsessed with preserving their Valyrian bloodline, so much so that they usually wed brother to sister, the idea that their #2 family for marriage pacts would be a different race entirely is absurd) if you actually focus on trying to tell an interesting story, which they did. There was plenty wrong with the story, but you can tell they honestly tried to write something compelling and in the end it was a pretty enjoyable product. Rings of power made the same diversity decisions and then centralized the entire advertising campaign around it and never even remotely tried to tell a good story, but instead decided that being diverse and women empowering was simply good enough.
      The results speak for themselves, and it's quite clear that fans are willing to look the other way on this shit so long as you tell a good story. That's all fans really want/care about at the end of the day. Something to entertain them and distract them for their lives.

    • @ScrambledAndBenedict
      @ScrambledAndBenedict 2 роки тому +39

      @@SynsityGW Absolutely, man. The thing a lot of creators don't understand is fans of a franchise WANT to like works set in that franchise. The better you make it, the more suspension of disbelief kicks in and the more willing they are to tolerate and even accept negative aspects of it. If a creator makes the effort to make it good, fans will defend it. Case in point, Nick Fury from the MCU. Nick Fury was originally a white guy, and yet Samuel Jackson is often seen as the definitive Nick Fury because those movies (for the most part) were well-written and Samuel Jackson nailed the part. If you're going to change shit, change it for the better.
      Being a little respectful of the franchise can go a long way. Look at the Resident Evil series with Black Wesker. Canonically in the games, there were 13 Weskers, all from different nationalities, as part of a eugenics project and only Albert Wesker and Alex Wesker appeared on-screen. The rest are presumed to have died. They could have had Black Wesker by just having him be one of the other 11 Weskers: there's your story, he's trying to escape Umbrella and cure the virus they injected into him while Umbrella is hunting him. Have the season end with actual Albert Wesker showing up in the final episode. It fucking writes itself, could have had their precious diverse Wesker, AND been completely faithful to the games by adding some backstory to the so-called Project W that's really only been hinted at in a couple of games. But no, they had to spray-paint THE Albert Wesker into a completely different character and piss off pretty much everyone who was willing to give it a chance.

      @@SynsityGW The whole thing with making such a big deal about diverse casting, is they want to put critics in a position where the critic has to choose between "defend their product" or "defend myself". It's why it's so preemptive, and why they make such a big deal out of it before a product they don't have a lot of faith in even launches, and why works that are actually GOOD rarely if ever focus on the diversity of their casting (Cobra Kai, old MCU, Arcane, The Mandalorian, etc). If the folks behind things like Rings of Power or the 2016 Ghostbusters or Resident Evil could defend the actual quality of those works, they would, because even if they were actually RIGHT about people criticizing their works just being sexist racists, the thing is these critics are raising valid complaints about these works that the creators have no retort to whatsoever.
      At the end of the day, my belief is if you want to adapt a work, you tell their story. If you want to tell your own story, tell your own story. It's why I'm so heavily critical of The Last Jedi: "doing your own thing" and "subverting the genre" was NOT the thing to do halfway through someone else's trilogy, especially when that trilogy is part of a trilogy of trilogies.

Which is why I wish consumers would stop being so fucking lazy and just stop seeing these garbage sequels/remakes/reboots/spin offs. Instead of having Western samurai walking around in a remake, they re-told the story with new characters in a completely new setting and culture.

    I was having a conversation with my 15 year old son and it's funny to watch him come to many of the same conclusions I have. We watched the original 3 Matrix movies together and he was genuinely fascinated by them. When Matrix 4 came out, he was super excited for it. I, however, knew better but I didn't want to ruin it for him. Biting my tongue, I asked what he thought of the movie...he paused for a bit and said, "Dad, it ruined the whole Matrix universe for me, I hated it! It's the worst movie ever." He just wanted to see his hero in action again, and they ruined that for him. I felt bad, but it was a proud moment as well.

    "Reflecting the world we live in" is fundamentally a terrible thing for any movie, book, or other piece of media not explicitly stated to be based in the world we live in. By doing this, you force something to be what it was never meant to, cordoning off whole avenues and valuable opportunities that you as an author can take, closing yourself into this one creative box. Not to mention, these are supposed to be things people get into to *escape* the world around them, not see the often depressing reality they have to live in, just with a thin veneer of "magic."

    • @lordbane5627
      @lordbane5627 2 роки тому +5

      For movies or shows to be well written, they should reflect the context of the setting. If that setting is 2022 New York City, then yeah, it makes sense to have lots of diversity. However, if you replace all of the cast of Black Panther with white people, or replace all of the cast of a film set in Japan with people from the Middle East, it probably isn't going to make sense and will be counter productive to immersive story telling.
      If Amazon made a serious movie about pre-Edo period Japan and there were a bunch of Black/Indian/Latino/White European Samurai, it wouldn't make any sense and next to no one would call me a racist for calling it bad.
      It's not the mere inclusion of diversity that draws criticism from most people, but the manner in which it's done with regards to the context of the setting and plot. The implications of the inclusion is what matters. If you portray people from all over the world as Samurai in a pre edo period Japanese film, the resulting implication of that is going to be the diminishment of historical accuracy and immersion, which is generally considered to be negative - unless it's meant to be a joke in a comedy or something. Kobra Kai included lots of diversity in a show set in Los Angeles in the 21st century USA and I'm very glad to see it.
      This argument is a lot like Chappelle's skit about modern day Feminism. I am pro gender equality, and therefore am by definition a feminist. But why then do I often find myself at odds with the modern day feminist movement? Because it's not the mere advancement of gender equality but the manner in which it's done. The modern day feminist movement doesn't end with political protests, it tries to push it's political agenda into movies at the expense of the story itself. It also goes further than equality, often advocating for female dominance over males and the demasculation of men - as we often see in modern day films.

Nope! She was ultimately a "rich people bad" mouthpiece and derailed Finn's character growth. Her potential was just wasted.

      My main gripe with the Rose character was not the actress. It was the fact that the characters we were supposed to be following (Rey, Poe, and Finn) had barely spent any time together. This was your Luke/Han/Leia. And while yes, Luke took his own trips away in the OT, you still had Han and Leia interacting and building that comradery. Instead, you pull in these extra characters (Rose and Holdo) instead of focusing on our main characters. Not only that, but you do a side mission about saving space horses that ends up having absolutely no effect on the main storyline whatsoever. Here I was, hoping for character development for one character of color, but I must be sexist because I didn't appreciate the other FEMALE character of color who was derailing the storyline. :D

Even if you're watching it to review it, you're still giving it what they want - eyeballs and money. They don't care if your review is positive or negative, as long as you WATCH IT! Even negative reviews give it more attention and people who otherwise may not have been interested end up watching it just out of curiosity. And so, the problem will continue.

      @@pizzapower3166 true, but sometimes escapism means exactly that. If I watch a movie it absolutely shouldn't need to have every race, gender and creed in it, it shouldn't have to have a 'message' at all.

    The more the layers of this onion get peeled away, the more depressing it gets. The people behind the productions, the grotesquely cynical PR, the hordes of dumb people who will consume anything without thinking, the grotesquely shallow and cynical media collusion... it seems like such an axis of awful, shallow, juvenile, anti-intellectual people with no imaginations, no sense of wonder, no inner child, no world view that didn't come from social media or a sitcom. And loads of vindictive resentment. Where is the joy? Movies and shows used to be about joy, adventure, wonder, humanity, relatable foibles. Now it's all just crass, juvenile, superficial PG-13 hell.

    10:20 "In order for this to be accessible to everyone."
    That's just ringing in my ears now. I think back to when I was young and discovered folk stories and fantasies from other cultures. I never felt I needed to be Japanese to appreciate their stories, nor did I feel that if a European knight showed up in any of those tales that only then would it be something I could relate to. Part of what makes things compelling to me is the "otherness" of them and I'm certain people of all different cultures have been enjoying Tolkien's work for many years prior to this. This notion is merely a craning of the neck on the part of certain individuals, they long to see themselves in everything because they are so bloody self absorbed. Fantasy should make you forget yourself in all the best ways. I'm truly disappointed in the Tolkien estate for allowing this.

      They are absolute tools - accessibility is resolved by one thing: cash. You want to make everyone accessible to everyone? Make it cheap. Make it FREE. Oh? You need to make a profit as well? You need to re-think that accessibility crap and just make it good that people are willing to pay cash for. :p

      Yes! Exactly!
      If you're writings modern day New York based story - diversify as much as you want and you probably can't overdo it. If you're coming up with a new sci-fi story set in space/future - invent races for all people care. But when writing about history and lore the diversity is already chosen for you. Disregarding that is just disrespecting a heritage that's not your own and robbing all audience of an opportunity to experience it as is.

      Absolutely, I hate this progressive BS in classic legends and folklore. It’s not only destructive to the source material but insulting and dispossessive. It’s taking a part of classic ancient history and rewriting it in a way you see fit in a twisted selfish act. It’s absolute BS and heartbreaking to see the classic tales being torn to shreds and rebuilt in such an insulting unlikable way.

    There was that "Gamers Are Dead" movement about 8 years back, giving voice to this increasing disdain media had for the fans.
    Of course it massively backfired at the time, but they never backed down or changed course.
    Fast forward and here we are, where the creators of media are not only no longer fans, but they openly hate the fans.

      @@reedschadegg9023 Well yes, it always was harassment. Critics rightly pointed out just how many female characters existed only to provide eye candy for gamers, and the gamers who desperately wanted and needed the eye candy because they had no lives acted shocked and offended.
      Immature man babies got called out, and so they acted like THEY were the victims. Instead of refuting any of the arguments made by the critics, they simply blasted the appearance and personalities and lives of the critics. Strip away all the ad hominem attacks and there was nothing left, because--gasp!--the critics were right.

    Rings of Power is one of the most tragicomic things I have ever witnessed. And I haven't even watched one episode. And the fact that they fired a Tolkien expert from the show is just a beautiful shit icing on the diarrhea cake they created.
