I grew up in Tucumcari during its heyday before the interstate bypass. We had over 10,000 people living there then. I bought the record soundtrack to The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly in Sands-Dorsey drugstore.

Hope to see ya up north pretty darn soon then! My Mom was raised on Mid Lake in Woodruff. She's doing quite well at 92, and now in IL. She worked for the DNR at Trout Lake as a teen. Have a good one, and I'll be in my old "Hot Rod" pickup, riding with my old dawg "Boomer"! Happy Holidays 🐰🥚🐣🐤

There is something very special, something beautiful in abandoned places. I guess it's the ghosts of history beckoning us to see and appreciate it. To find out it's secrets. If you're on Flickr, there are some great groups posting photos in this same vane. Sally and Marty certainly have that appreciation in their travels. Great videos kids!

I have to admit, the 50s and 60s were the pinnacle for the 'American' experience. So many folks can remember travelling across country on the L:incoln Hwy or Rt 66 on vacation with their parents on their way to sunny CA, Disneyland and everything else the west coast had to offer so different from 'back home'.

I stopped here on my way to Tucson last year (live in West Bend ❤). I didn't have time to sight see but you did it for me. I stayed at the Fairfield Inn. I ate dinner at La Cita which is off the old route 66. Really good Mexican food. I actually stayed and ate here again on the way home. Cool little city. Hope to stay here again if I can get my 60 year old stomach to work somewhat normal again. 😊

Love that old brick building at the beginning of your video on Tumcumcari! Always got to talk to a local on how to pronounce words. Love the native American story on the name of the town origin. Old theaters are always interesting and it's a shame if it can't be restored! Wow that is cool about the original bank vault being inside the now antique store. Shame about the fire destroying that building. Wow the stories of the old hotel are interesting! Love that the one building still has the hard wood floors. The train depot and the history of the rail line is nice. Glenlock motel should be restored. A lot of areas in Southwest were supposed to be good areas to treat respiratory diseases. Yes we need to keep history alive like the bathhouse. Too bad a lot of places like the POW Wow Inn are slowly falling apart.

Before leaving New Mexico you must go to Lincoln and Ruidoso. Lincoln ..Billy the Kid town. Wortley Hotel. We use to take a drive out of Ruidoso to go to Lincoln and have lunch at the Wortley Hotel. Then Ruidoso is paradise on Earth and has an interesting history and currently is interesting as the Playground of the Southwest!!! It's also where all Texans vacation. It's essentially Little Texas but in the mountains of Ruidoso, NM. There's a ski resort, race track and everything else in between. Gorgeous and very scenic place.
I'm surprised you didn't drive up there when you were in Roswell. It's about an hour away, up in the mountains. Seems like so many UA-camrs don't know anything about Ruidoso. They'll drive to White Sands, Cloudcroft, Roswell, Carlsbad etc..and completely miss the 45 minute drive up the mountains from Alamogordo to find paradise... Ruidoso!!!❤❤

All of it was original, even the AC, the cable TV , which was set on a porn station, (Just kidding, cable was an .) It took a while for the AC, but it did cool down the room. I wanted to spend the night in Tee Pee, but they were closed too. I had dinner at Dells, Great food. Thanks for sharing, drive safe. 🤠

Tucumcari was the former Rock Island Lines/Southern Pacific railroad train and engine crews change point for the former Rock Island Lines crews based out of Dalhard, TX and the SP RR crews based out of Tucumcari and worked to and from Vaughan, NM. Final run of the remaining passenger train service through Tucumcari, was made on February 21, 1968. And the crew change point in Tucumcari was eliminated and now the UP RR road crews work through between Dalhart, TX and Vaughan, NW.

The movie was made in Italy with an Italian director. Maybe why Lee said it that way. I've gone thru Tucumcari many times over the years. Before I-40 was completed it was a bustling litte burg. Wife and went thru there about 10 years ago and i was really shocked at how much it had gone downhill.

I have yet to spend any time in Tucumcari, but back in the early 1960's (pre Amtrak) I would take the train from Phoenix to Chicago to visit my Dad back in Milwaukee. He would pick me up at Union Station in Chicago. Back then the train was along the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific line. At El Paso it would split, with one part heading on to New Orleans, and the other headed up roughly along US 54 across New Mexico (including Alamogordo and Tucumcari) on into Kansas and beyond. I think my love of New Mexico started with those train trips back in my teenage days.🙂

Strange how Clint Eastwood didn't correct Lee Van Cleef as he worked in Tucumcari during the filming of Rawhide from 1959 to 1966. The picture at 7:06 is the Princess theater burning, and it was never rebuilt. So it's probably still a mess. I moved here in 2005 and the town had become smaller every year. Since the Covid years, more are moving here. Probably because you can still buy a house in town for about $30 k and very little crime exists. So if you can work remote, or are retired it's cheap. We have two huge lakes nearby, Ute Lake and Conchas Lake. Ute lake has a town with it, Logan, NM but Conchas Lake is basically just the lake, so bring a lunch.

It's just the typical American way of mispronouncing names and words, like wolf for instance, Americans always say woof, instead of pronouncing it with the "L" or roof, pronounced ruff, instead of the oo sound. There is a lot more, but I think this gets the point across.
