Well SSS and Marty you did it again. Another great old place that us Yankees knew nothing of and now know quite a bit about thanks to you two. Thanks so much. Look fwd to all your travel vids. Your narration and attention to detail is superb.
I love old faded cemeteries like this. I love all cemeteries, but old faded ones like this just have an extra aura of mystery and sadness because of all the names and graves that can't be seen anymore. check out some of the old cemeteries in Nevada and Arizona when you guys get a chance 🤙
Everyone always forgets about New Mexico where you will find graves from Europeans hundreds of years before the 1850 you might find in a neighboring state. Yes state. You don’t need a password to go to a US state from a US state.. Lol.. 1600’s. 1700’s.. Way before any generation even imagined going west. Of course native graves are tens of thousands of years old across America.
I used to stop at old cemeteries when my kids where smaller and they would look for the oldest stone, it would be difficult there. Stay safe and healthy Sally and Marty.
Thank you again, Sightseeing Sally and Marty, for your great videos. I very much appreciate both of you giving us your mini history lessons, and view of the places, that you take us to, thru your camera lens.
It was nice to hear you say to be mindful of the people who still lived in Shafter. I live in a small community & many people, not from my area, consider it a "ghost town". But those of us who live here do not consider our community that. It doesn't stop the people from coming into town, going into buildings & taking pictures, even though it is clearly marked as private property. Having people come in who show no respect to the citizens of our community make us a little standoffish & not one to answer their questions about OUR property.
Agree with you, but it would be interesting if one of the residents would’ve talked to Sally about living in such an out of the way area. Not to intrude on the residents but just add some insight. BTW, when I lived in San Francisco there was an interesting building/property around the corner from me. Tourists would gaggle in front and try to look inside but if the owner was outside watering her small garden they would get a surprise shower! That got rid of tourists fast! 😁
@@SightseeingSally I remember the old hair salons and all the old women sitting under those things......LMBO.... my early years included sitting in hair salons bored out of my mind.....just waiting while old ladies yelled out everybody's business.....whew, gossip
When I was on the road working I would always buy a sandwich and a beer and have my lunch in a cemetery. My favorite inscription was "Here lies Jack a colored man, born a slave but but died a freeman.
It's always fun to see Marty along for the ride. I don't know - I think if I were to be buried somewhere, the upper part of Wisconsin would be more appealing.
Again another great job, I have seen several of your videos. I live in West Texas and according what i could gather of my family history my grandfather of native american decent died in Shafter in 1928 months before my father was born. According to family history he died from an illness related to working in the silver mines there.
They were digging a grave in our churchyard two days ago. But there is a grave there from 1100 too. The church has stood here since 1070. Churches are extraordinary places to find history
I thank you both for a wonderful vides report on Shafter. That place is special and both of you did a marvelous job displaying what made it special. In this video your true feelings, and thought were expressed perfectly, so don't ever be afraid to be exactly who you are, you did Great! Wow, I had no idea that place existed but the second you show the cemetery, and the scenery, I was hooked. I wish you both a Wonderful Week Ahead, and I thank you for your wonderful videos, which bye the way keep getting, better & better!!! Honestly this video is really special, and is in my opinion your best to date, Bravo.
Clint Eastwood had the crew and production supporting crew, write their names on a cross. All of those crosses had the name of someone that helped make the movie. I suppose that's rich-guy humor. "You'll work hard or else. We already have a grave for you."
@@SightseeingSally That type of answer is why we keep you around. - You're smarter than we are. Marty - smack that woman of yours for me. She's starting to show us all up, - instead of just you. ===== You guys have quickly become a favorite around here. Thank you for sharing.
Justice Antonin Scalia died just outside Shafter, at the nearby Cibolo Creek Ranch. Since he was a Catholic, he might have gone to that church before he died.
3:28 I'm having my urn, it's lid off, strapped to the back of a Harley hauling ass down the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). The airflow over the mouth of the urn will cause a vacuum, pulling my ashes out and allowing them to waft gently over and then into the ocean!😁
It's a shame that much of the property is now fenced in and can't be accessed. The last time I was there it was no problem to explore all around the ruins of mining operations. I can see where people might fall down into something, likely caused by taking selfies, so it's understandable that the owner would want to keep people out. I should have made many more photos. It's a fascinating old town.
did you know that the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was about the Battle of Glorieta Pass here in New Mexico, up by Las Vegas? Thanks for your vids on our state.
As an Rv-er, do you guys stay in an Rv and perhaps you should do a brief review of some of the place you stay when your making these great discoveries?
Shafter was played by Gary Busey in the film "Rough Riders". Busey played him as a drunken exhibitionist, which likely says more about Busey than it does about Shafter. I have driven by the town and saw the church from a distance. It was a late summer evening, and the shadows were lengthening. Very moody, and coincidentally I had a tape of the Montenegro versions of the Morricobe soundtracks as I drove by, and thought--- this is the kind of place this music was written about. I had node all that stuff was there, or I would have pulled in. Have you been to Chianti Hotsprings?
Well Sally, there's always "Soylent Green" and the "Sky Funerals" of Joe Rogan's preferance(?)... The "Brave New World" "THX-1138" Cremation and Flush Reclaimation(Fertilizer) approach(?)... Maybe just the Native American burning on elevated pallets is the simplest(?)...
You mentioned towards the end of the video, that you have not heard anything but the sound of traffic. Just wanted to point out that very early in the video, I heard a Rock Wren call. So it is not totally absent of other sounds.
Hey sally, enjoy your videos it's like taking a trip. Have you and marty been to menowi Nebraska small town population of 1 a lady by the name of elsie is the only who runs the town she's the mayor town clerk cook at the cafe and bar.
In a history of the Fort, one author claimed that in the case of social diseases one lady in Ft. Davis the town was likely responsible for over 50+ cases seen at the fort....
My mother & her siblings were born there - my grandfather’s name is probably on one of those crosses - he worked in silver mines. My mother attended parochial school there in Spanish - was taught by Nuns from Spain - this school was for Mexican American children, wondering no public schools in English for these children?
My mother had a hair dryer like that one in the old house. She set her hair in curlers and pin curls and dry it completely so she wouldn't have to go to bed with wet hair, then she'd take out the curlers and pin curls in the morning. I have no idea what happened to that contraption and I'm the one who cleaned out her house after she died and got it ready for sale. Do you suppose the people who left that one in their old house ever wonder about it?
In the high desert of California on the way to Vegas the flat areas look like they were once trash dumps, this looks to be the old west, I am grad they had acknowlegement
