Thank you, Nigel! US Soccer probably in mourning today, but the guy was not producing and needed to go. Managers have gotten way less time than Gregg. He's been protected and over rated (maybe like the team?) The USA needs to show it's serious. And Tony, it is a problem if the US needs the national team to prop up MLS. Charlie, check out Ivory Coast at AFCON. Fired the coach during tthe tournament, a new voice immediately made a difference, and they won it.
I don't really understand what Tony and Charlie are trying to get at with their insistent "big news" take. It doesn't have to be that melodramatic. Nigel is spot on - he's the type of level-headed person you would want making the next hire decision.
This video perfectly encapsulates how not only do the federation and players need to be held accountable. But soccer media and even the fans need to be called out too.
Brit guy is right, this was the easiest decision to make. Greg is fortunate he has a brother at the USSF and that Matt Crocker is incompetent, but that doesn’t make this decision any harder.
Tony and Charlie looking pretty foolish here. This whole “let’s pat a guy on the back who did a poor job” thing is because of how small the US Soccer circle is. Get over it. He was terrible and got fired.
This became quite a dreary conversation, below the standards of the show. Nigel was right; Charlie and Tony just needed to concede the point and build on it rather than arguing about it.
The sadness for Gregg being fired highlights the lack of standards behind US soccer and why it failed at the Copa America. Gregg is fine and will be fine regardless if he's the Head Coach of team USA or not, Team USA having mental lapses whether is Zimmerman againist Wales with the , Dest againist Trinidad and Tobago, Weah againist Panama is not fine and Gregg telling them the score of the other game before that free kick againist Uruguay I think shows where these lapses start. A lot of people in England arent happy with Southgate but you don't see England have these issues.
What was so amazing about it is they had just done the exact same thing with Andonovski (re-hiring a players’ favorite manager after modest results) and saw that failure, and they did the same lazy thing with Berhalter. USSF lost in space.
Nigel woke up and choose violence 🤣🤣🤣 can this guy either take Alexi Lalas Job or better yet Crockers job?? Man is speaking facts out here. Killed me with the witty combat “you said USA will easily get out of the group” ☠️ painful but hilarious

Nah the players felt too comfortable w Gregg as HC. lol some weren’t even starting w their clubs and weren’t in form. Maybe they should get players who’s actually in form and atleast getting good minutes w their clubs.
You ask Nigel his opinion then talk all over him. And then take issue with his opinion, which you mischaracterized. Do a better job listening, Tony and Charlie. Also, we totally overrate our talent.
At least 2 yrs too late…now we’re going into ‘26 less prepared than we could have been…total waste of time…team is not good enough - need to look to expand player group …
theres still ample time to prepare IF they make right choice for his replacement. a lot of people dont seem to understand firing berhalter is only half the battle. ussf can still very much mess this up.
Your player group isn’t strong enough right now, not enough players playing at elite level every week, but the right coach can make them competitive and hard to break down. You do need to employ a more pragmatic style as many other teams employ in tournament football. Its esp effective when you don’t have enough quality players to choose from. If you could get someone like Bielsa who’s got bags of experience at international level and tournament football you’ve at least got a good chance of reaching the knockout stages of the world cup. Copa has shown you theres a lot of work to do and you weren’t even in a particularly tough group tbf. The world cup will be even tougher where there will be a record number of nations involved. After the group stages there’ll be a an extra knockout stage with the last 32 then the last 16.
@@citizenstrangerTwo years is not very long considering how little time the coach will actually have all the players together. You really need someone who’s got experience of international football and tournament football. A more pragmatic style will probably need to be adopted to firstly make you harder to break down as you give away too many soft goals leaving you chasing games which further opens you up to a counter. It might be boring to watch, but you’re not blessed with a lot of quality players tbh. What if Pulisic is injured for example, who replaces him? Exactly, there isn’t anyone right now. You can judge a team by its bench and your bench is weak right now.
The team played much better under Hudson & BJ, that should tell you something that somehow Gregg's assistants somehow got the team playing miles better than Gregg ever did BJ literally brushed off Canada and Mexico like they were nothing, whereas Gregg's record against Canada is 1-2-2
US fans have to be realistic and get behind whoever comes in and give them a chance and not pre judge them. The chances of getting someone like Klopp are unlikely due to how the contracts are set up with the womens coach having to be paid the same as the mens. Someone like Bielsa would be a huge coup if you can get him. He’s got bags of experience at international level and tournament football and you only have two years to get this team competitive. You don’t have a great squad with too many average players and a few decent players and the new coach has to work with what he has. Remember you’re a CONCACAF nation that doesn’t play elite teams too often other than in friendlies.
There are so many good coaches out there tbh. I think you need someone who’s managed at international level and tournament football. Someone like Bielsa would be a huge coup if you can get him. You’re not blessed with enough quality players so need someone who can get the best out of these players playing a pragmatic style, firstly making you hard to break down as you give away too many soft goals meaning you’re then chasing games and leaving yourself open to the counter.
Max Allegri might be even better. I like Pioli, but a coach that knows tournament football is important. It's different than grinding out club seasons, and Allegri just won the Copa Italia. And like Pioli he also knows a couple US players pretty well 😉
Its true, the US doesn’t have great strength in depth and needs more players coming through of a higher standard. What happens if Pulisic is injured, who replaces him? Exactly, there isn’t anyone right now. Its a team game and you can often judge a team by its bench and the US has a weak bench right now.
Shiddd ... what will happen if Balogen gets injured ? Tourney Pulisic is night and day compared to club Pulisic ... Nonetheless I agree about the bench ... our bench is weak ...
The money constraint argument is always interesting to me. There is likely no shortage of American soccer benefactors willing to bankroll a top-tier USMNT coach for the 2026 World Cup in the USA. If money is used as an excuse, it is because the US Soccer Federation has failed to be creative.
I agree with Nigel. They're acting like one of the best managers in the world was fired. 0 WINS VS TOP 20 INTERNATIONAL OPPOSITION NOT NAMED MÉXICO. Let's not kid ourselves either, it's not like 2022 WC was a massive success. Like we played so well that we turned heads internationally. Charlie is also talking nonsense, wow the WC is in the US, what does he expect we gonna do? Does he think this group of players is gonna win the WC? With these players, unless a manager that puts pressure on them and holds them accountable is hired, they'll be lucky to get out of the group stage. Charlie and Meola are cheerleaders, enough talent? These players are overrated, other than Pulisic and Robinson that get consistent play time, who is a lock starter at their club? Also, home soil? When does the US have home field advantage? Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and most latin nations fill more stadiums in the US, than the USMNT.
This discussion shows how much the US players of the past felt like they had to carry so much responsibility on their back - and their feeling that their success or failure would determine whether the sport ever takes root there. That is something that no player in Europe or South America faces since the game has such deep roots there.
Its a results business and tbh its two years too late. Doesn’t give the new guy much time to get this team ready for 2026. They won’t want to make it two major tournaments in a row where the host nation fails to get past the group stages. They need someone with experience and relative success at international/tournament level. Bielsa would be a good shout if they can get him after Uruguays exit.
But just think how much better they could be if they would have had an experienced, tactical and demanding manager. Perhaps they could have beaten someone besides a very weak Mexico. Hey, Jesse March had 6 matches with Canada... didn't do too bad. And who exactly did they interview the second time.....that was probably one brief interview.
fans are already saying that if 2026 is like the copa it will be the worst world cup in history. the fields are too small; the ticket prices are outrageous; prices inside the stadiums are too high; the security protocols/rules destroy the atmosphere.
The British guy knows what he is talking about, these other guys are crybabies. Listen Canada has a new coach before Copa and they did great. U.S. media needs to sensationalize everything.
Guys like Charlie or Tony need to understand that the truth isn't always pretty it starts from the bottom on up Football or soccer in the US is a business to get money not developing player's
I think that many Ex- U.S National Team players carry to much sympathy towards their ex-teammates unlike in other countries were they say it how it is and there are no hard feelings because that is how it is
no more hiding place for these players and they would be exposed for who they are. bench warmers at chelsea, forest, psv, milan, fulham, then a couple who were relegated with leeds, a couple who were relegated with venezia. a player that was released on free by barcelona. these are the core of the team. apart from antonee robinson none of these players are playing well week in week out, even pulisic, he plays second fiddle to leao and had to play right wing or on the bench. like it or not berhalter provided that ready made shield to protect the players from blame. these players are just not as good as you think
Nigel and Tony are actually on the same page but don’t realize it. Nigel is saying to get on with it, while Tony is concerned about how it affects the future of the game in the U.S. What Tony doesn’t realize is that by getting on with it and treating the game like the rest of the world does, it will actually make us better and eventually grow the sport as a byproduct of just getting the job done. The pressure Tony and Charlie are talking about is because of the 2026 World Cup. The reality is that we need to lower our expectations for the group because USSF is a wreck and the players we got are the players we got. Get the best coach to bring out the best for whatever players we have, keep the vision short term, then start thinking about the long run.
We have 18 months or so, basically 2 club seasons, for more US players to step up. By that time I think we'll be having an entirely different conversation about our player pool. That is something to get excited about. What Nigel maybe doesn't get was the feeling of despair for most US fans around Berhalter. It was the feeling that even with our most talented player pool ever we *still* won't ever be able to compete at an elite level. That it didn't matter how many good players we have when the coach sux. He does have a point about a deeper player pool though. And that's *my* point. That pool is only going to deepen over the next 2 seasons. And *that* is also a really good reason to get excited about the Olympics that are just about to start. Straight up I'm more excited *now* since Greggg was fired than I was before 😁
I’ve listened to a lot of CIWYW with Tony and Charlie and they’ve been massively critical of Berhalter for years now. I don’t think they feel hurt that he was fired, but the missed opportunity and the disappointment at lack of progress. Tony and Charlie may have overreacted a little but I think he just didn’t quite articulate his thoughts adequately.
Watch Tony Meola’s Kickin It interview and see how much he cares about the success of soccer in the US if you’re wondering why he reacted the way he did. Also it’s just a great great interview
Cycle one, complete? He barely made it to WC with goal difference. He would get line ups wrong, tactics wrong, never adjusted to any change. How can that been seen as a complete and proper perfomance??
Who is the guy wearing the grey tight shirt? I don’t think this job is for him. And Charley laughing is a sign of nervousness when you hear someone speaks the truth.
I consider myself a typical American soccer fan who likes football and baseball much more - I will cheer for us but if we lose won’t shed a tear. That’s not the attitude the rest of the world has. If they lose, immediate firing, people crying, etc. I think that’s what the British dude is saying. In order to win on a world stage where this is the only thing people care about, you have to care THAT much.
I don’t think Nigel is wrong necessarily, but it’s easy for an Englishman to take a competitive national team for granted. Obviously an outsider isn’t going to feel the weight of what’s happening, but us long suffering American fans keep waiting for US Soccer to prove the Euro snobs wrong and we keep disappointing year after year. Add to that the fact that we *still* can’t cultivate top talent on US soil and instead have to rely on dual nats to prop us up. It IS a sad day because we are once again finding ourselves in the same place we’ve been in for decades.
The praise for Berhalter’s first cycle is laughable. First, he refused to bring in the most talented rosters, then as the US limped thru qualifying and qualifying was being threatened by poor performances he finally started replacing the MLS lifers with better talent. And with that better talent still struggled. Soccer is more than “results”. You get consistent results when you play creative dangerous soccer and create consistent goal scoring chances. As for the WC group, they scored 2 goals in group play. Two. They scored early against Iran, then Berhalter curiously parked the bus and invited Iran to attack for 75% of the game and nearly gave up the tying goal. It’s quite obvious the federation is trotting this BS out to defend the indefensible hire of Berhalter to begin with. It’s propaganda damage control.
The biggest issue in Men’s US soccer that was failed to be mention is this. The US is still a pay you play culture. Middle class and upper middle class players that get to be seen by US scouts because they are able to afford to go to the top national tournaments, that play in the top leagues, and play with the so-called $$$ top clubs . As a result the majority of the players that get seen by US scouts fall under the pay you play environment. If Messi, Vini, Maradona and so on played youth soccer here in the states they wouldn’t have a chance to play for the US side because they couldn’t afford it. US soccer is bias at its core economically and more. Also, how many brown players do we see on the US National team?
Ivory Coast sacked their manager mid tournament and went on to win the tournament. Tony, stop coddling towards your former teammate. Berhalter had to go, period
Charlie is delusional lol they didn't play well in the world cup. He's Soo obsessed with the WC 2022 like this team did something the other Usmnt never did
It’s just the USA national team aren’t good look at there best player pulisic England have 3 better rashford Anthony Gordon grealish there team just aren’t good enough that’s the real problem could bring in pep tomorrow they’d do nothing they need to realise who they are.
Two of them could not even make England's Euro Squad yet would easily walk into the US squad as the star players, US needs to come to terms with the fact their players are nowhere near the level they need to be at International level.
Grealish is not better than Pulisic. Rashford same level… I haven’t hear nor seen Gordon play so can’t comment their. Regardless, Pulisic would still struggle to be in Englands starting 11… no way he takes Sakas, foden, or bellinghams positions… he’d be a super sub.
Wow… seriously… I’m done with this nepotism bs.. these guys are USSF personified… lack of self acknowledgment of who and where we are.. we get it, you’re friends with Gregg.. be honest with urself and stop the pity party for Gregg who failed.. for 5 bloody years
I'm not mourning. Never should have been brought back after the performance from the Netherlands. His staff brought players that never should have been there to begin with. Tactically awful, no discipline, and not once did I see this team adapt to adversity. The players' work rate and effort is soft. We wanna see these players have work rates like Germaine Jones, Clint Dempsey, LD, peak Michael Bradley. Jürgen Klinsmann was a goal away from the setting the new standard. Measured progress is getting this team to a final four in a world cup. Anything less is a failure.
Gregg Berthalter should never have been coach, as he could be mediocre at best! It angers me that you pundits have propelled the problem by not calling him hot with his horrible tactics, playing players out of position, and can't change the game in any way. There are significant problems with U.S. Soccer, the media, the MLS, and Dan Garber having a vote and considerable influence on the USMNT. Shame on all of you for your mediocrity!
Don't ask for someone's opinion and then get your panties in a bunch for it. I agree with the brit 100%, coaches get sacked all the time world wide, it's part of the job, only in America do they make those things the biggest headline in the world.
Don’t bother listening to the 1st and 2nd guys. They’re useless, only paying diplomatic, participation trophy lip service to Gregg. Third guy is far more realistic and to the point. I don’t even know why the blond talking head is there…. Gregg wasn't the first to mismanage USMNT, but he might be the worst in recent history. He's out--yay! Now let Pochettino get in there, put every position up for grabs, and produce an effective combination of our best and hungriest in the right positions at the right time.
Seriously is it a requirement for ex American players to refer to the team as the US men’s national team? Do they get paid every time they say it I mean honestly every broadcast or every video I watch they have to refer to it in the proper name we know who the hell you are talking about!
Americans have to understand their hubris stops at Futbol! What the U.S need is first to admit their players are average & secondly, they need to develop a cultural sensibilty to futbol. We need to develop our footballing culture from the grass roots. Spain can recycle players but still keep the same principles. We don't have fundamental princples to our football. We are similar to Brazil in that we've not fully established our footballing culture by destorying our domestic league, where coaches can't even develop. We first need to develop coaches who will build upon a footballing philosophy. Argentina are the best examples to do this & despite Messi's presence, the system works despite of him. What we need is a systematic manager like Conte or Sarri. An Italian systematic approach that covers for our lack of technical abilities & mininaml footballing intelligence/cunning. Put it differently, we need a head coach to teach the game in line with his principles. The only manager i see available and young enough to appeal for our fans is De Zerbi. This would mean players would play on merit, especially that god-awful Reyna. Gregg chose principles over actually teaching given his lack of gravitas.
Usmnt are an average team, they have one decent to good player in Pulisic but Reyna, Dest, Weah need to swallow their egos and go somewhere where they can play more games, Their obsession with playing out from the back is silly, the game is about scoring goals so mixing it up with some direct vertical stuff. Also they haven't got a ball playing keeper and centre backs who are comfortable on the ball. They are not the 11th best team in the world. Any other host of a major tournament would appreciate not needing to qualify. How many us players get into the so called 14th rated team Uruguay.
Ay yo CBS please fire these so called pundits acting like actual babies. Gregg was a terrible coach and i agree with the englishman it is a celebration stop acting as if the decline of USMNT has begun.
Excuses excuses excuses thats all I heard - i for one actually want to hear what Nigel says so can the shills stop over reacting and talking over him. The truth is a bitter pill but you need to digest it to improve - fact is they're not as goodnas they think they are, they dont understand the sport or have football IQ, they're very entitled and arrogant and there's a lot of matches that are a perfect example of this cuz they dont bother preparing for opponents at all and just plainly they think they're it so they dont do their homework, they dont have proper pitches or stadiums for the games, they dont even call the sport by its proper name, most importantly the sport is not accessible for all kids, the sport is treat like polo there, only middle class can play it cuz it cost to play there, no wonder none of these players have any grit and then they grow up and go to Europe and cant cut it. They all say the current squad plays in top teams but they rarely mention most of them are benchwarmers not starts, sure youre players maybe talented enough to get to European club BUT they dont have enough qualitynto be starters and that a problem, at the end of the day they cant cut it, stop over rating the players etc.. it needs a complete restructure if they truly want to be a football nation but its doubtful seeing as all these owners and federation want is to make money, they dont actually want the sport to grow too much because then they cant price gauge supprters. The usa isnt a football nation and doesnt have a football culture either, its not the primary sport and thats okay but at the same time at least have a realistic take on the state of the sport, maybe one day it will get bigger and they could get better but it will take time and the right people have to be in place to steward that agenda.
Inherently nepotistic and incestuous ussoccer federation always sets an apologist tone to these things. He was by all ostensible metric mediocre to bad! An international coach with High Level Torunament experience and a track record of dealing with young developing players is necessary
It means good Gregg is fired from USMNT it means he does not have desire to win the team every tournament in International match as World Cup and Copa America. It is sad very low supporters of soccer also people in America does not care when Gregg got fired it is because terrible job also failed managed their players in World Cup Round 16 and Copa America. The fact that none of these analysts ever mention Matarazzo when talking about American coaches proves MLS is too intertwined in US Soccer
I agree with the British view focusing to much on greg and not on who's next
the 2 American analysts way into their feelings. The British guy was right.
Nah the players felt too comfortable w Gregg as HC. lol some weren’t even starting w their clubs and weren’t in form. Maybe they should get players who’s actually in form and atleast getting good minutes w their clubs.
Nigel was correct imo, but to say "I'm not tryina diminish..." right after doing so, was hilarious.
As an American “soccer” fan, the two American’s take is embarrassing.
You ask Nigel his opinion then talk all over him. And then take issue with his opinion, which you mischaracterized. Do a better job listening, Tony and Charlie. Also, we totally overrate our talent.
Thinking US fans think we can win the World Cup is an absolute strawman and I’m done hearing it.
Literally no one said that.
@@nikig2382yes many have said that and STILL believes it!!!
Keller and Charlie to be removed button
🤡 US analyst getting butthurt
The team played much better under Hudson & BJ, that should tell you something that somehow Gregg's assistants somehow got the team playing miles better than Gregg ever did
BJ literally brushed off Canada and Mexico like they were nothing, whereas Gregg's record against Canada is 1-2-2
I know everyone is saying jurgen klopp but what about stefano piolli? Hes available and a slightly more realistic option
@@1972dsraithe coaches’ equal pay talking point has been debunked…the contracts for coaches are not linked
And like Pioli he also knows a couple US players pretty well 😉
@@maudalmusicalmachines3541 good shout
I'm so happy for My Team because Gregg is fired.
Best decision by Matt Crocker and perfect timing, but need a head coach within the next 30 days announced. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Why is the dude in the graphic department showing we beat Bolivia 1-0 when we wow 2-0…. This is why US soccer sucks we can’t do a simple thing right….
Im American and the Brit is right😂
Well said BRIT.
Nigel R-C keeping it real for the funeral marchers.
fans are already saying that if 2026 is like the copa it will be the worst world cup in history. the fields are too small; the ticket prices are outrageous; prices inside the stadiums are too high; the security protocols/rules destroy the atmosphere.
The British guy knows what he is talking about, these other guys are crybabies.
Listen Canada has a new coach before Copa and they did great.
U.S. media needs to sensationalize everything.
Guys like Charlie or Tony need to understand that the truth isn't always pretty it starts from the bottom on up Football or soccer in the US is a business to get money not developing player's
the problem goes way beyond the manager, it's the entirety of us culture across the board. entitled, corrupt and arrogant.
Straight up I'm more excited *now* since Greggg was fired than I was before 😁
Great point. Cheers m8.
Nigel has it correct, Tony needs to calm down, and accept the facts.
these dudes getting heated over a mediocre manager finally getting dropped. the English dude is spot on. he speaks the truth
You can't be motivated and need to be pushed wtf Charlie
Nigel I’m a fan keep fighting the good fight for us. Tony and Kasey Keller stink as pundits
Also, Morocco has a new manager mere months before the WC and it paid dividends. Tony and Charlie are totally off the mark.
Yeah but pyloric is one of the few focused on????
Watch Tony Meola’s Kickin It interview and see how much he cares about the success of soccer in the US if you’re wondering why he reacted the way he did.
Also it’s just a great great interview
Finally an intelligent well thought out statement by CHARLIE
ty
Charlie says the next US manager will inherit a team that is 'motivated' but 'needs pushing?' These pundits are stealing a living.
Hoping for Pochettino or Tuchel.
Tuchel??? Heck, no!!! Did you see what he did at Chelsea? No. We’re good Herve Renard could be our guy after his contract expires this summer
Calling it by the logical name would be a start.
He's Soo obsessed with the WC 2022 like this team did something the other Usmnt never did
Man this guy's not in touch with reality. I'm convinced he doesn't actually watch the football side of his own country on UA-cam.
They were going to hire Marsch but a small group of the "star" players begged Matt Crocker to keep Gregg... Spoiled weak kids.
Cmon guys the Brit is being objective
We are subjective
@@CarlosRamos-xr9rj Pulisic does not even make the 26 man squad
Step 1 fire GGG
Step 2 rebuild the team
Have to be american or european?
I wish Charlie Davies would go away
Gregg Berthalter should never have been coach, as he could be mediocre at best! It angers me that you pundits have propelled the problem by not calling him hot with his horrible tactics, playing players out of position, and can't change the game in any way. There are significant problems with U.S. Soccer, the media, the MLS, and Dan Garber having a vote and considerable influence on the USMNT. Shame on all of you for your mediocrity!
When did CBS start to hired Capable people?
The mls shills need to go away!!!!
This team is so bad, these guys need to face reality. The Brit is 100% correct.
"There's not enough time to get a new manager in here bc we only play New Zealand and Panama"
We literally just got grouped bc we lost to Panama.
Because we literally choked, not because Panama is any good lol

Tony is right with this one.
I'm glad USA team is not fit in soccer to World Cup and Copa America.
